Billboard’s Top 5 Songs of the Summer 2019 | Billboard News

Billboard looks back and counts down the top five songs that ruled the summer of 2019.

Rania Aniftos:
It’s the last year of the decade, and the summer of 2019 brought some new faces to the Hot 100 songs of the summer. Let’s dive in.

It was her first hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and it’s actually a single from two years earlier. Coming in at No. 5 on the Hot 100 summer songs is Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts.”

The next song features a collaboration with two of the world’s biggest pop stars: King of collabs Justin Bieber teamed up with British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran for their hit “I Don’t Care,” which comes in at No. 4.

Our third biggest song of the summer is an electronic R&B hit by Khalid. His huge single “Talk” comes in next.

The song that had us all feeling powerful against the “Bad Guy” in our life … Billie Eilish makes it to the No. 2 spot with her massive hit “Bad Guy.”

Our top song of the summer in 2019 was important for a few reasons: It shot Lil Nas X into the spotlight and became the longest-running No. 1 Hot 100 song in history. Collaborating with country star Billy Ray Cyrus, “Old Town Road” comes in at No. 1.

Next week, we enter a brand new decade with 2020’s top songs of the summer!

Grimes Recalls Her ‘Big, Long Conversation’ With Elon Musk Following His Anti-Trans Tweets

While Grimes and Elon Musk may not be a couple anymore, the pair still co-parent their two children (X and Y) — which means they still have to have tough conversations every now and then.

In an interview with Wired on Tuesday, Grimes revealed that she and Musk had a “big, long conversation” after the X (formerly known as Twitter) CEO shared a slew of anti-trans tweets back in June.

“I was like, ‘I want to dissect why you’re so stressed about this,’” Grimes said. “Getting to the heart of what Elon says helps me get to the heart of what other people’s issues are, because it’s this über guy situation.”

The “I Wanna Be Software” singer said that in their conversation, she determined that Musk was mostly concerned about “fertility issues” caused by transitioning. “I was like, ‘OK, you don’t hate trans people, you hate woke culture. I get that it can be annoying, and you have concerns about the fertility thing. So let’s figure it out,’” she said, referring to “fertility tech” that could “help trans people” conceive. “He’s just on Twitter, and he’s unhappy with woke people, and the arguments happened.”

The incident Grimes referred to happened at the outset of June, when Musk became the subject of right-wing criticism after The Daily Wire CEO Jeremy Boreing claimed that Twitter canceled a deal to premiere Matt Walsh’s anti-trans film What Is a Woman? The CEO ended up promoting the video himself, spreading right-wing talking points by adding that “consenting adults should do whatever makes them happy, provided it does not harm others, but a child is not capable of consent, which is why we have laws protecting minors.” In a separate incident, Musk claimed that the word “cisgender,” as well as its shortened form “cis,” would be “considered slurs” on the social media platform.

Gary Gersh On Robbie Robertson’s Pivot From The Band Co-Founder to Acclaimed Solo Artist

Long before signing Nirvana and the Foo Fighters to their respective record labels and, later, becoming AEG Presents’ global touring and talent president, Gary Gersh was a devoted The Band fanatic. While working at Licorice Pizza in California, he saw the influential rock ‘n’ rollers perform numerous times, and as a young Capitol Records employee, he befriended Robbie Robertson, who died Thursday at 80, during The Band’s The Last Waltz farewell concert.

By phone from a Minneapolis airport, Gersh recalls his early encounters with The Band; coaxing Robertson into recording his 1987 self-titled solo debut while working as a Geffen Records A&R man; and long conversations with the guitarist and songwriter in Woodstock, N.Y.

How did you come to be involved with The Last Waltz?

I was a young guy starting out, and The Band were on [Capitol] and doing their thing when they decided The Last Waltz would be the last show. I get up there for rehearsals, and for the show itself, and it was monumental. I watched Robbie in the middle of it all, being different than a musician — he was always talking to cameramen and Mr. [Martin] Scorsese [who directed the 1978 film documenting the event]. It was a beginning of an education. Robbie helped raise me and I was fortunate to have somebody so unbelievably talented and so beautiful as a human being teaching me so much.

What moment do you remember most from that concert?

Robbie was front and center in a way he had never been seen before. Not necessarily the most important member, because the beauty of The Band was the quality of the whole and everybody mattered, but Robbie was the star on screen. Because of the way everything was captured, all of a sudden people were seeing this guy as one of the greatest live guitarists that ever lived.

How did you get to Capitol Records back then?

Gary Gersh

Gary Gersh photographed on Oct. 21, 2019 at AEG Presents in Los Angeles.

Sally Peterson

I had come from a chain of record stores, Licorice Pizza, and Capitol was my first record-company job. The Band had put out a Christmas song [“Christmas Must Be Tonight,” recorded in 1975 and, released two years later] as a single, and I was crazy for it. I was just this guy at the record label, at the very, very bottom, jumping up and down and screaming about The Band. They weren’t the biggest priority at the time, because they weren’t the biggest band, but, to me, they were the most influential band in American music. I saw them play at the Santa Barbara Bowl when I was in my late teens and it was probably well over 100 degrees. Robbie was dressed up in a suit and they were all just dying from the heat, but there they were, just being The Band, and they crushed every time I saw them.

You helped him make Robbie Robertson — how did that come about?

One of the first things I did as an A&R guy was sign Robbie and talked him into making solo records, which, at the time, he wasn’t thinking of doing. I said, “You can’t stop making music. You can do whatever else you need to do, but you can’t stop making music.” I kind of didn’t know what I was talking about, but I think he got that I could be a partner on the ride.

What was making that album like?

He was developing what he wanted his sound to be while we were working on the record. I had always known that [producer] Daniel Lanois was the guy to make the record, and Robbie knew it but had never met him. They hit it off famously. … Daniel pushed Robbie in ways I’m not sure had ever happened before. Robbie had always written multiple verses and had extra lyrics from all the songs. I had never seen that before. There were whole verses being moved in a way that took all of us to see and help develop.

Was there a moment that stands out from that process?

When the first solo album was finished, we mixed the record with [engineer] Bob Clearmountain at Bearsville Studios [in Woodstock, N.Y., site of many Band recordings], which Robbie obviously had a real history at. The day we got to Woodstock, we got a six-pack and he took me over to Big Pink, and we sat on the curb, and I just started asking questions. He was one of the greatest storytellers, whether he was talking about a meal at dinner or a film or music. He talked about how, once they got into the house, they started writing songs from fragments of things. And how Robbie thought each piece was like an actor in a play or a movie, and how they would come and go in a way that made it so cinematic.

When was the last time you saw him?

I talked to him a few weeks ago — he knew my family and knew my wife, and we had young kids and were starting to raise a family, and he had already had one.

Anything else you’d like to add?

He introduced me to so many people — so many musicians — that I had never thought in my life I would know. But he felt it would be part of my education. Van Morrison was just on the music system here [at the airport]. I remember meeting Van because Robbie introduced me to him when they were working on a song [“Wonderful Remark”] for the [1983] King of Comedy soundtrack. I hear things and I’m just reminded everywhere I go. I think that’s the way it is with great teachers. It never leaves you.

“After the show we went swimming.. these times are beautiful and they freak me out and there’s so much to tell you,” Lorde wrote alongside a series of snaps of herself swimming in a dimly lit pool. “No this is not the start of anything out there, just want u to know there’s a light on inside me .. show it to you soon.”

See her post here. Fans in the comment section clung onto the “show it to you soon” portion of the caption, theorizing that Lorde might share her latest feelings by way of a new album. The star, however, has yet to confirm anything on the way.

Earlier this year, Lorde revealed that she’s working on her fourth studio album, the follow-up to 2021’s Solar Power. “It has taken me quite a while [to start working on it],” she told Ensemble magazine. “I mean, I do just take a long time… I do a lot of research, I write a lot down.”

While she didn’t share any details about who she’s working with or when it will be arriving, she didn’t indicate any plans of releasing an album in 2023. “Anything could happen. Let’s see,” she added.

Erykah Badu Fried DJ Akademiks With New Badu P*ssy Incense Drop

HipHopWired Featured Video

Erykah Badu Launches

Erykah Badu remains one of the most dynamic entertainers of all time, and her social media savvy has been on high display over the years. The talented singer and producer once again showed off her clever wit, taking a shot at DJ Akademiks while harkening back to an old joke that had the Internet in shambles.

After the verdict came down for Tory Lanez in connection to the Megan Thee Stallion shooting incident, fans took to Akademik’s live stream and one person said that Erykah Badu use her “magic” on him. The comment got under Ak’s skin and he went on to insult Badu by calling her old and mentioning her relationship with rappers Andre 3000, Common, The D.O.C., and Jay Electronica.

Part of Ak’s ire was aimed at a moment on his old program, Everday Struggle, which he co-hosted with Nadeska Alexis and Joe Budden. During that 2018 chat, Badu compared Ak to Jerry, the mouse from the Tom & Jerry cartoons, and the memes exploded on social media at the time.

Still harboring that hurt, Ak promised to keep insulting Badu at his leisure. However, Badu used the moment to promote her popular Badu P*ssy incense, this time repackaging the “Badu P*ssy” with an image of Jerry on the front of the box.

The item swiftly sold out, which prompted Badu to acknowledge the speed at which the items were sold. If you check the description of Badu P*ssy, she takes a dig at Akademiks by suggesting he’s the “biggest p*ssy in the culture.”

Chuck D Named Music Ambassador & Content Architect for MLB’s Hip-Hop 50 Celebrations

Public Enemy co-founder and hip-hop legend Chuck D will have a key role in crafting Major League Baseball’s year-long Hip-Hop 50 celebrations. In a press release on Thursday (Aug. 10), MLB confirmed that Chuck D will serve as both music ambassador and content architect for their forthcoming festivities.

This Friday (Aug. 11), Public Enemy will perform at Hip-Hop 50 Live at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx, New York, the birthplace of hip-hop. During the event, Chuck D will serve as MLB’s special correspondent, capturing the electric atmosphere in exclusive content for MLB’s various platforms. He is also slated to collaborate with MLB on content, music and stories throughout the rest of the year — including in-stadium videos focused on the relationship between baseball and hip-hop culture.

“As a longtime baseball fanatic, I am beyond honored to be the first Hip Hop artist to work with Major League Baseball in this exciting new way — connecting sound and culture to the stories of the game,” the rapper said in a statement. “Thank you to MLB for adding me to the lineup … and the pitch is on the way.”

Friday’s concert coincides with MLB’s launch of their yearlong partnership with Mass Appeal’s Hip-Hop 50. As part of the partnership, MLB and its various clubs will create content, merchandise and giveaways to celebrate Hip-Hop 50 throughout the 2024 season. The concert is set to include performances from Run-D.M.C., Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, Lil’ Kim, Trina, Eve, T.I., Common, A$AP Ferg and more.

Public Enemy has earned two entries on the Billboard Hot 100: 1991’s “Can’t Truss It” (No. 50) and 1994’s “Give It Up” (No. 33). On the Billboard 200, the group has sent two titles to the chart’s top ten out of ten overall entries — 1990’s Fear of a Black Planet (No. 10) and 1991’s Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black (No. 4).

The Band Camino Dug Deep on Their Sophomore Album ‘The Dark’ in Order to Grow

The Band Camino are in their healing era, whether they actively realize it or not. When it comes to romantic relationships, the Nashville-based trio have been known in their music to be self-deprecating and even admit to unhealthy patterns for the sake of love.

But their sophomore album, The Dark, despite its title, looks different. On “Same Page,” singer and guitarist Jeffery Jordan lets go of a relationship that seems perfect on paper, but things aren’t as they seem. On “Novocaine,” Spencer Stewart (vocals, guitar) allows himself to open back up to love — even if he feels like he needs something to numb the fear. On “Let It Happen,” the boys do as they say and let life come to them as it will.

“This album feels more mature,” Jordan tells Billboard, with Stewart agreeing and adding, “It’s another year of life and we’ve been trusting ourselves a lot more.”

And while the romantic and psychological themes of the album come from a more mature headspace, so does the music. The group took the emotion-filled lyricism and infectious hooks that fans love and “refined it,” as Jordan notes, with the final result diving deep into what a healing heart feels like, encompassed with sleek guitar riffs and swelling drum beats to help dance through the emotional rollercoaster of musical therapy. The Dark paints the picture of a band who is in fact the same page, as the aforementioned song title seeks.

“I feel like when we first started out and we got our record deal, we were so immersed in the whole whirlwind of it,” drummer Garrison Burgess recalls, “But we figure out how we work together better as time goes on because we’ve gotten to know each other and longer. We can go through hard things in our own lives, and get to live together through each other’s individual hardships.”

Jordan playfully adds, “If we didn’t like each other, this would be a lot harder.” He then takes a more serious tone, continuing, “We lucked out with compatibility, for sure. It’s hard to find it with people whom you’re touring with, creating with and in the studio with all the time.”

Stewart offers that the trio “communicate really well,” as can be seen on the most basic level in how coherent their albums always sound. “When you know, you know,” he says of his bond with his bandmates.

While chatting with The Band Camino, one topic that comes up frequently is the pressure of a sophomore slump after a successful 2021 self-titled debut that featured lasting hits including “I Think I Like You” and “Song About You.”

“If you start thinking about a sophomore album in the wrong way, it can f— you up,” Jordan admits, before Stewart chimes in to comfort his longtime friend and musical collaborator, marking yet another indication of the group’s emotional synchronicity.

“Growth is never linear ever,” Stewart assures Jordan, adding, “It can be tough to have that pressure to make sure you always succeed in order. You don’t want to fail and fall out of people’s eyes and then go on to make your best work on the third one but it’s too late.”

Jordan quickly finds grounding in the conversation, once more proving his mental and emotional growth over the last few years. “The pressure does force me to think about why I love doing what I’m doing,” he concludes. “It pulls me out of the numbers game and the success game and the Instagram attention game. I think about the fact that I started this because I was in my bedroom, playing my piano and it made me feel something.”

As we wrap our conversation, it became abundantly clear how much digging into The Dark stepped the Band Camino directly into the light. The Dark is out August 11 via DBLBLK Records/Elektra Records.
