Ranking Every Track in January’s Dancehall Clashes: From Stefflon Don & Jada Kingdom to Teejay & Valiant

Katt Williams certainly set the tone for 2024. Less than a week after the Emmy-winning comedian fired shots at peers such as Rickey Smiley and Tyler Perry on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, two of contemporary dancehall’s leading ladies launched their own lyrical battle.

Funnily enough, the two major January dancehall clashes — Jada Kingdom v. Stefflon Don and Teejay v. Valiant — center around the two biggest dancehall crossover smashes of 2023: Teejay & DJ Mac’s “Drift” and Byron Messia & Burna Boy‘s “Talibans II.” Thankfully, both clashes were kept on wax, as all artists involved participated in the battles for fans’ entertainment and the greater dancehall culture over anything else.

“This is dancehall music, and once it is [a] lyrical battle, I am down for it,” Teejay told DancehallMag. “Nothing violent; nothing out of the studio, nothing outrageous… just music, and if it seems like it’s getting too far, I will definitely wrap this up, because you know we have to get back to the money at times— that’s the bigger picture… for now, we have to just entertain people but nothing serious. I don’t know about the next side, but on my side I am positively sure that it is just music.”

While the hip-hop world is frenzied with haphazard rap beefs peppered with days of spiraling in lieu of actual good music, dancehall’s clash culture is still going strong and further emphasizing the global reach of this iteration of the genre — especially considering how much these battles dominated online conversations in January. If you’re not already familiar with the details, here’s a primer on both of them.

Jada Kingdom v. Stefflon Don

As the old saying goes: Think of the messiest person you know. It’s a man, ain’t it?

At the eye of the hurricane that was Jada Kingdom and Stefflon Don’s five-song clash lies Grammy-winning Afrobeats crossover star Burna Boy. The “Last Last” singer is an ex of Stefflon Don’s, and once pictures of Jada and him started making the rounds on social media, tensions began to rise. Before the ladies took it to the booth, Steff threw some vague Instagram Story shade that she later clarified as directed towards her former managers. The “Hurtin Me” singer would soon throw more shade that eventually sparked the first track in her clash with Kingdom.

Before that moment, however, Burna’s remix of Byron Messia’s breakout hit, “Talibans,” hit the airwaves. In verse three of the song — which hit No. 99 on the Billboard Hot 100 — Burna croons, “All of the best pumpum deh yah Kingston/ So me buy a Birkin fi Jada Kingdom.” Burna wasn’t just bragging about his new fling; the line is also a play on the “You gon need a Birkin if you wanna show me off” lyric from Jada’s “Turn Me On” (with The 9ine).

By autumn, Jada — also known as Twinkle — was seen with Pardison Fontaine, Grammy-winning songwriter and former beau of Megan Thee Stallion. But with the rumor mill swirling about a December reconciliation between Steff and Burna, the timeline between the two flings started to look a bit funky.

Naturally, months of tension gave way to Steff putting her feelings to wax. At the top of the new year, the award-winning Brit shared a teaser of a new song on Rvssian’s “Dutty Money” riddim, in which she threatens to “box” an unspecified woman who messed with her man. In total bad gyal realness, Jada not only confirmed a casual fling with Burna Boy, but she also pressed Steff to clarify just who was going to get boxed. After a bit more back and forth, Steff’s “Dat a Dat” arrived and the clash ensued, eventually ending after two tracks from Jada and three from Steff.

“For everyone who’s saying ‘war start’, war jus done! Well, for me that is,” Jada Kingdom wrote in an Instagram Story (Jan. 9). “I’m in a happy and healthy relationship now, I won’t be prolonging this nonsense.”

Teejay v. Valiant

Teejay & DJ Mac’s “Drift” was one of the defining global hits of 2023 — and debate over which artist is more responsible for the song’s success is the basis of this clash. During an Instagram Live a few months ago, Teejay blasted Mac for allegedly trying to swindle Panda out of production credits on the hit song.

On his October DJ Mac-produced “Beer & Salt” single — which was featured on that month’s Reggae/Dancehall Fresh Picks column — Valiant jabbed, “Mac them a link when them can’t find a hit song,” a clear hit at Teejay, who recently repped dancehall on one of Billboard‘s five Genre Now cover stories this month (Jan. 10). In a Jan. 14 interview on the Let’s Be Honest podcast hosted by Jaii Frais, Teejay acknowledged the shade, and soon enough, Valiant responded to the acknowledgement via Instagram, spurring Teejay to preview a diss track shortly thereafter.

Nonetheless, the clash stayed on social media for a bit longer. Valiant responded to Teejay’s preview with a message on his Instagram Story that read, “Me naah give you no strength for you EP sir, go work and promote it.” I Am Chippy — Teejay’s first project since signing to Warner Records last year — is slated for a Feb. 2 release. Right after the IG Story jab, Valiant then went live with DJ Mac himself as the “Drift” riddim played in the background. After one more Instagram Live from Teejay’s side, in which he doubled down on his DJ Mac’s disses, the musical phase of the clash began.

After two tracks each from both Teejay and Valiant, the two artists put their beef to bed. While all four songs are currently available on their respective official YouTube pages, both dancehall stars have since removed the songs from their respective official Instagram pages out of respect for one another.

Without any further ado, here’s a ranking of the eight songs that made up two of the biggest contemporary dancehall clashes of the young decade. But first be sure to check out our Spotify playlist highlighting January’s hottest new tracks across reggae, dancehall, soca, calypso and more.

Ariana Grande Reveals ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Is ‘a Concept Album’ & ‘Really Vulnerable’

Ariana Grande has had big plans for her new album Eternal Sunshine from the very beginning. In a Thursday (Feb. 1) Instagram video, the pop star pulled back the curtain on an early rollout meeting she had with her team at Republic Records, during which she revealed that the project is both “really vulnerable” and a “concept” record.

“Things are kind of just pouring out and happening very quickly,” Grande tells her team in the clip, sharing that she started recording the LP as soon as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes forced the upcoming Wicked movies, in which she’ll star as Glinda, to pause filming. “It’s kind of a concept album ’cause it’s all different heightened pieces of the same story, of the same experience.”

“I’m weirdly emotional. F–king pull it together, b—h!” she continues. “Some of [the songs] are really vulnerable, some of them are like playing the part of what people kind of expect me to be sometimes and having fun with it.”

Grande also included photos of her working on the album in the studio and shooting its cover artwork in the video. “I think this one may be your favorite,” she wrote of Eternal Sunshine on her Instagram Story. “It is mine.”

The new post comes days after the Grammy winner revealed two titles from Eternal Sunshine‘s tracklist on social media. The first of the March 8 project’s 13 songs is called “Intro (End of the World),” while the fifth will be the album’s title track.

No. 9 on the tracklist will be the already released lead single “Yes, And?,” which debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100 earlier this month. The feat marked Grande’s eighth No. 1 hit on the chart.

Kelly Clarkson Says Recent Weight Loss Came After Prediabetic Diagnosis: ‘I Wasn’t Shocked’

Kelly Clarkson started the year looking noticeably thinner and during a chat with comedian Kevin James on her daily talk show on Monday the singer revealed what spurred her to make a lifestyle change. “You look great!” she said to the King of Queens star, who returned the compliment. “Oh , thank you. Well I was told I was prediabetic,” Clarkson responded.

“That was literally what happened,” Clarkson, 41, continued. “They were like — and I was, well, I wasn’t shocked. I was a tiny bit overweight. So, yeah, I wasn’t shocked by it. But they did. They were like, ‘You’re prediabetic. You’re right on the borderline.’ And I was like, ‘But I’m not there yet.’ And then I waited two years and then did, however, move into the — I was like, ‘OK, I’ll do something about it.’”

According to the Mayo Clinic, a prediabetes diagnosis means that the patient has a higher than normal blood sugar level, one that is not high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes. However, “without lifestyle changes, adults and children with prediabetes are at high risk to develop type 2 diabetes.” Those with prediabetes are at risk for suffering from some of the long-term damage of diabetes — especially to the heart, blood vessels and kidneys — which can be counteracted by eating healthier, daily physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight, which can help bring blood sugar levels back to normal.

In an interview with People earlier this month, the single mom to daughter River Rose, 9, and son Remington Alexander, 7, New York transplant Clarkson credited the constant walking around the city with her kids as a factor in losing some weight. “Walking in the city is quite the workout,” she said. “And I’m really into infrared saunas right now. And I just got a cold plunge because everybody wore me down.”

In addition to those trendy health measures, Clarkson said she’s also switched up her diet. “I eat a healthy mix. I dropped weight because I’ve been listening to my doctor — a couple years I didn’t,” she said. “And 90 percent of the time I’m really good at it because a protein diet is good for me anyway. I’m a Texas girl, so I like meat — sorry, vegetarians in the world!”

How Discogs Hopes to Turn Seller Discord Over Fees Into Positive Change

With 110 million buyers, sellers, collectors and lurkers roaming through Discogs every year, the 23-year-old online music marketplace’s forum threads are not exactly full of emotional support. In one of the notoriously messy threads, users complain about the May 2023 increase in selling fees from 8–9%. “What a rip off,” goes one post.

In another forum, someone advises a seller contending with a buyer demanding a full refund: “People here need to have more balls when dealing with dopes. Grow a pair.” And another user simply writes: “Discogs has gone downhill. It’s really sad. I have loved this site for so long. It feels like bots are running it. AI is just going to make it worse.”

How does Discogs turn these passionate, semi-anonymous user criticisms into upgrades? Very carefully, according to Lloyd Starr, chief operating officer since May 1: “We’ve got millions of people on the platform every month now. It’s a lot harder to find the signal in that noise.”

To improve communication between Discogs and its users, the company’s executive leadership plans to spend 2024 rolling out initiatives to solicit user suggestions and make broad changes. The Discogs community remains angry about the fee increase — which applies to shipping costs, too — and the way the company suggested the “easiest thing” for sellers to do would be to increase their prices. In a “we can do better” post last month, founder and CEO Kevin Lewandowski announced a soon-to-be-created Community Advisory Board, for users to “bring feedback and ideas to Discogs and influence how the platform evolves.”

The advisory board, Starr suggests, will be the centerpiece of Discogs’ changes. In roughly late March, Discogs will solicit applications from users and appoint representatives from the “selling, contributing and collecting” communities, as Starr calls them, by early summer. “It’s more of a dynamic conversation than a one-way post on a forum,” he says.

Lewandowski and Starr have already begun their Discogs feedback-solicitation tour. The pair traveled to New York City together in mid-January to meet with power users, including Craig Kallman, chairman and CEO of Atlantic Records, who gave them a tour of his two million LPs. Starr won’t reveal exactly what these users suggested, but he outlines a broad plan for Discogs to use surveys, polls and live contests at record-selling events. “We really want the community to feel listened to and give them advice,” he says.

In addition, Discogs will roll out “25 in ’25,” an attempt to boost the company’s online database from 17 million listed items to 25 million by its 25th anniversary in November 2025. (As of 2019, the latest year in which Discogs released sales numbers, users sold 14.6 million items on the platform, including 11.6 million vinyl LPs.)

To help achieve 25 million, the company recently hired Brent Greissle, a longtime user who has personally added 50,000 entries to Discogs’ database, as principal of discography affairs, to oversee the project. Starr also hopes to expand the database’s “richness and diversity in culture,” tapping into Brazil’s record-store community, for example, through trips to Sao Paulo, like one Lewandowski recently took to visit the world’s biggest LP collector, Zero Freitas, who by some accounts owns over six million records.

As for technological changes, Lewandowski spells out plans to improve the log-in and checkout systems and want lists. “I wrote most of the code originally back in 2000. It had a major rewrite in 2004. Some of our current software goes back that far,” he says. “This enables us to do things faster and give the community things they’ve been asking us for.” Starr elaborates that Discogs has been working for years to upgrade order management, user authentication and fraud mitigation to bring the site up to Amazon-style e-commerce standards — but it’ll take more time. “We’ve got a little technical debt to resolve here,” he says.

Several Discogs users say they’re skeptical of broad changes coming from executive leadership, which they say hasn’t listened to their concerns. Jonathan Highfield, a longtime seller near Liverpool, England, complains that Greissle, a liaison between Discogs management and user forums, is too overloaded to respond effectively about slow-loading pages or difficulty searching for releases by genre, style or label. “If they’re listening, great, but the channel is too narrow for enough information to pass through,” Highfield says. “It makes people not want to use the site.”

And like many sellers, Kurt Walling, a semi-retired optician in Streetsboro, Ohio, who has been offloading portions of his personal collection via Discogs for years, remains upset about last year’s increase in selling fees. Of the imminent changes Starr is describing, Walling says: “My inclination is to think it’s corporate stuff. I don’t think it’s sincere.”

By way of response, Starr says, the last time Discogs changed its fees was 10 years ago, and since then, the company has been “absorbing the rising cost of salaries, the rising cost of enterprise software.” Plus, competitors like Amazon and eBay take a sales percentage out of every order, and Discogs is “doing the same thing.” While Discogs could have communicated the new fees more effectively to users, according to Starr, “I don’t think removing fees makes sense.”

And for all the discontent found on the Discogs forums, one user is satisfied with his experience: Kallman, who continues to use its database to help track Atlantic’s vast catalog of releases. “Crucial, rare, out-of-print recordings that might otherwise be at risk of being forgotten in the digital era are all preserved,” he says. “The database is the most valuable asset of Discogs, and they give it away for free. It’s a constant, evolving, living, breathing organism that continues to fine-tune to maintain the completeness of the platform.”

Justin Timberlake Proclaims He’d ‘Like to Apologize to Absolutely F—king Nobody’ at NYC Show: Fans React

When Justin Timberlake said to cry him a river, he meant that wholeheartedly. At the Billboard 200 chart-topper’s one-night-only show at Irving Plaza in New York City on Wednesday night (Jan. 31), he seemingly shaded former girlfriend and pop icon Britney Spears while introducing his Grammy-winning hit.

In fan-captured videos from the free show, Timberlake can be heard proclaiming “I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely f—king nobody” as his backing band plays a bombastic overture that leads into the opening notes of “Cry Me a River.” His comment, which comes days after Spears apologized on her Instagram account for some of the things in her new memoir and expressed her love for his new music, did not impress her legions of fans.

“Absolutely disgusting that in 2024 and after Britney literally promoted his trashy song, this a–hole Justin Timberlake is shading her,” one fan tweeted.

“He is such a pompous douchebag, even after Britney was kind to him & apologized without actually needing to,” shared another.

In a Monday (Jan. 29) post to her now-private feed, Spears praised Timberlake’s performance of his new music on Saturday Night Live, writing, “I am so in love with Justin Timberlake’s new song ‘Selfish’… It is soo good and how come every time I see Justin and Jimmy together I laugh so hard???” Her caption also included a general mea culpa to anyone impacted by the revelations in her bestselling The Woman in Me memoir. “I wanna apologize for some of the things I wrote about in my book,” she wrote. “If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about I am deeply sorry.”

While Spears is offering up some remorse, JT wants no parts of any of that. His Wednesday night “Cry Me a River” introduction marks a notable change in disposition from the last time his performance of this song went viral. During a Las Vegas show in December — just a month and a half after The Woman in Me hit shelves — Timberlake stressed that he meant “no disrespect” before launching into “River,” a 2003 Billboard Hot 100 No. 3 hit widely considered to be a response to the former couple’s split the year prior.

But Timberlake’s fans don’t believe he owes any mea culpas. “I love this side of Justin,” one person shared on X. “I wouldn’t apologize either, f–king telling secrets from 20 years ago.”

“Because you don’t owe anyone an apology anymore,” shared another. “Mic drop, Mr. Justin Timberlake.”

Since the release of Spears’ memoir, Timberlake’s name has become a magnet for controversy. In her book, the pop princess reflects on his infidelity, him ending their relationship right before her music video shoot, and the actor-singer playing guitar as she sept on the bathroom floor after her abortion.

Timberlake debuted “Selfish,” the lead single from his forthcoming sixth studio album, Everything I Thought It Was, on Jan. 25. In an effort to troll JT and his new release, Spears’ fans rallied to send her own “Selfish” — a bonus track from the deluxe edition of 2011’s Femme Fatale — to the top of the U.S. iTunes chart. In fact, Spears’ “Selfish” sold more pure copies over Jan. 29-31 than Timberlake’s.

Travel Advisory For Jamaica Issued In United States Due To Recent Violence

Jamaica is a popular destination for many Americans, but the U.S. government has issued a recent travel alert advisory for the Caribbean island. According to reports, Jamaica is undergoing a recent spat of murders and other crimes over the past few weeks, prompting a Level 3 advisory.

The State Department issued its travel advisory late last month, citing the recent crimes in Jamaica, which include murders, sexual assaults, and robberies, even inside all-inclusive resorts where travelers are thought to be safer. As it stands, the government agency is suggesting potential visitors to reconsider traveling there.

From the advisory:

Country Summary: Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, are common. Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts.

Local police often do not respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. When arrests are made, cases are infrequently prosecuted to a conclusive sentence. Families of U.S. citizens killed in accidents or homicides frequently wait a year or more for final death certificates to be issued by Jamaican authorities. The homicide rate reported by the Government of Jamaica has for several years been among the highest in the Western Hemisphere. U.S. government personnel under COM security responsibility are prohibited from traveling to the areas listed below, from using public buses, and from driving outside of prescribed areas of Kingston at night.

On Jan. 29, the U.S. Embassy in Jamaica added, “We strongly encourage you to obtain traveler’s insurance, including medical evacuation insurance, before traveling to Jamaica. The Department of State does not pay medical bills.”

News of the travel advisory made its rounds on social media with reactions varying from humor to some looking at this as an opportunity to visit the country at a cheaper price.

9 Afro-Colombian Artists You Should Know in Honor of Black History Month

Few songs evoke Colombian pride like Grupo Niche’s salsa classic “Cali Pachanguero.” The moment the song’s opening trombone intro plays in a room full of Colombians, chairs and tables get pushed to the side, the space turns into a makeshift dance floor and a sing-along breaks out.

So what if the song is a love letter to the city of Cali? The entire country embraced Cali’s unofficial anthem as its own, and felt national pride when a snippet of the song played during the 2020 Academy Awards.

“Cali Pachanguero” — normally a staple at any Colombian celebration — was written by the late Jairo Varela. The salsa legend co-founded Grupo Niche with Alexis Lozano, giving it a name (“Niche”) that is used to refer to dark-skinned people. Varela is one of many Afro-Colombians who’ve shaped music in a country known as “the land of a thousand rhythms.” Not many others, however, have achieved the same level of mainstream success.

Breaking through in the industry has historically been an uphill battle for Afro-Colombians. But artists such as Varela’s Grupo Niche, Lozano’s Orquesta Guayacan, Toto La Momposina, Leonor Gonzalez Mina and, more recently, ChocQuibTown — which includes Varela’s niece Gloria “Goyo” Martinez and nephew Miguel “Slow” Martinez — have led the charge and served as inspiration for others.

With Black History Month kicking off today (Feb. 1), it seems appropriate that we celebrate by highlighting Afro-Colombian artists, both veterans and newcomers you might not know, but should, including Lido Pimiento, Mauro Castillo, and more.

Cardi B to Tackle ‘Male-Dominated Football Industry’ in NYX Super Bowl Ad: Watch the Teaser

Cardi B is coming to a screen near you – and you best believe her lips will be shiny and plump. NYX announced Thursday (Feb. 1) that the rapper will star in its Super Bowl ad on game day, promoting one of the brand’s latest lip products in what will mark her first ever beauty partnership.

According to the press release, the Feb. 11 ad will center around Cardi and other powerful women as they “tackle the traditionally male-dominated football industry.” “Featuring the brand’s latest viral product, Duck Plump High Pigment Plumping Lip Gloss,” it continues, “The spot aims to flip the script on male stereotypes with a humorous look at the extreme plumping sensation of the gloss, which will leave audiences laughing.”

The brand also shared a 15-second teaser for the upcoming commercial, in which the “WAP” rapper investigates a tube of NYX gloss and says one of her viral catchphrases — “That’s suspicious, that’s weird” — before applying the product to her lips.

“Freaky!” she adds, giggling as the camera cuts to a screen reading “2.11.24.”

In conjunction with the ad, NYX has also released an exclusive new shade of the plumping gloss called Cherry Spice, which Cardi will model in the Super Bowl commercial. Priced at $13, the shade is available only on the cosmetics company’s website

Cardi’s own business, Whipshots, also recently released a new product: a Valentine’s Day limited-edition strawberry flavor of the brand’s spiked whipped cream. The Grammy winner hasn’t released music since September’s “Bongos” duet with Megan Thee Stallion, which debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100

Prior to that, she teamed up with now estranged husband Offset on “Jealousy” in July; the couple has since broken up. The two celebrated New Year’s together, though Cardi later assured fans on X that they hadn’t gotten back together.
