Justin Tranter on His Grammy Nomination, Working With Selena Gomez, Reneé Rapp & More | Billboard News

Justin Tranter talks about receiving a Grammy nomination for his songwriting, goes in depth about the songs he’s written this past year that he submitted for his nomination, why he feels it’s important for the Grammys to recognize songwriters, what he wants to achieve with Facet label, and publishing and writing with artists such as Reneé Rapp, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus and more!

Justin Tranter:
Hello, hello, hello. Check check. One two, one two. This looks fantastic. Thank you for this opportunity to just speak in front of my own beauty. Hello, I am Justin Tranter, and this is Billboard News.

Katie Bain:
Hello, I’m Katie Bain for Billboard News, and I am genuinely thrilled to be here with Grammy-nominated songwriter Justin Tranter. Justin, thank you for joining us.

Justin Tranter:
Thank you for having me.

Katie Bain:
First of all, November. I want to know what you were doing what when you found out you were nominated for this Grammy.

Justin Tranter:
I will be very honest with you. Last year was the first year the category existed, and I had my hopes way the f–k up. I did not get nominated. So this year, I kept my hopes very low. Me and my amazing publicist did no campaigning. We just … I just … I just of course submitted myself and was very proud of the songs that I submitted but just intentionally did not get my hopes up. And right before the nominations came, I went to go walk my dog, was not watching, and I really, truly thought there was was not … was not gonna get nominated. So walking my dog, and then all of a sudden, I looked down at my phone and there’s, like, 300 text messages.

Katie Bain:
Yes, that’s great. Yeah, that’s actually just got goosebumps. Did you stop in your tracks?

Watch Don Toliver Lead His Hardstone Biker Gang in New ‘Bandit’ Music Video

Don Toliver has a new rock edge to him with his brand-new single “Bandit,” which he released Thursday (Feb. 1) via Cactus Jack and Atlantic Records.

The song, which samples Tame Impala‘s “One More Hour” from the 2020 album The Slow Rush, is Toliver’s first new music release since his 2023 album Love Sick, which reached No. 4 on Billboard‘s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 8 on the Billboard 200. But it sounds like he’s already back in album mode, since he wrote on X, “Album soon.”

Toliver is kicking off his new era with a music video that features him leading a Hardstone biker gang through the desert (two of the motorcycles are from his personal collection) while wearing custom Elliot Evan leather jackets with the “Hardstone Psycho” symbol emblazoned on the back. He eventually leaves their rowdy house party to go check on his IRL girlfriend Kali Uchis, who is expecting their first child. The couple made the announcement last month.

Toliver has upcoming festival performances at Rolling Loud California in March and Governors Ball in June.

Flo Milli Finds First Top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs With ‘Never Lose Me’

Flo Milli finds her first top 10 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as “Never Lose Me” races 16-7 on the list dated Feb. 3. The single, released on RCA Records, has ridden a wave of TikTok virality that has triggered major gains across multiple streaming services as the tune also begins its radio campaign.

To enter the top 10 on the multi-metric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, “Never Lose Me” tallied 15.5 million official U.S. streams in the tracking week of Jan. 19 – 25, according to Luminate, a 28% increase compared with the prior week. The improvement sends the song 10-3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs chart with the Greatest Gainer award, given weekly to each song with the largest increase in stream count. Sales for the track, meanwhile, remain at a negligible amount and are essentially even with the previous week’s total; the track has yet to appear on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales ranking.

In the radio world, “Never Lose Me” registers its first appearances on airplay rankings with three simultaneous debuts: No. 25 on Rap Airplay, No. 35 on Rhythmic Airplay and No. 46 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. As is the case too, on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, “Never Lose Me” gives the rapper her first visit to all the charts as a lead artist and second overall entry, following a featured role on Lah Pat’s “Rodeo” (which also had a separate version featuring Big Jade) in 2023.

Elsewhere, “Never Lose Me” rockets 15-5 on the Hot Rap Songs chart and 37-19 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. Notably, the single’s sample of Babyface Ray and 42 Dugg’s 2023 track, “Ron Artest,” helps both artists gain chart credits through songwriting contributions.

“Never Lose Me” found huge reception on TikTok through a variety of trends that use the song as a soundtrack. Some clips that involve users displaying medals and trophies with captions that feature tongue-in-cheek reasons for the achievements (such as “worst ex”), while other videos center on flexing while using the song’s ““never had a b—h like me” lyric. Thanks to the song’s popularity on the social media platform, “Never Lose Me” leads the TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart for a third consecutive week.

The new hit is likely to appear on Flo Milli’s forthcoming album, Fine Ho, Stay, for which the rapper shared the album art last October. The new set is the third and final installment in an album trilogy, following 2020’s Ho, Why Is You Here? and 2022’s You Still Here, Ho?

Camila Cabello Debuts Blond Hair Makeover: See Her New Look

Camila Cabello is a brunette seńorita no more. The 26-year-old pop star debuted her shocking hair transformation via Instagram on Thursday (Feb. 1), showing off bright blonde locks ahead of her upcoming new era in a self-filmed video.

Taken on a handheld camcorder, the video shows Cabello rocking a white baby tee and ’90s glam as she gives fans a look at her new dye job from all angles. “It’s time,” she captioned the clip, adding a devious emoticon: “>:).”

With her new makeover, the “Havana” singer’s hair is now almost the complete opposite color of her prior natural near-black waves. In addition to sharing the video, Cabello also changed her profile picture on Instagram to a blurry photo of her as a blonde.

The night-to-day hair change comes about a month after the former Fifth Harmony member hinted at plans to release new music in 2024. A couple of days before New Year’s, she wrote on Instagram Stories that 2023 had been “mostly the year of this” over a picture of her seemingly recording vocals in front of a microphone setup.

“see you next year b-tches,” she added at the time, along with a mouth-zipped-shut emoji.

Plus, on Wednesday, Cabello shared a carousel of photos from a recording studio, featuring her posing in front of a soundboard. “is it butterflies or acid reflux ?” she mused in the caption.

Cabello hasn’t dropped an album since April 2022’s Familia, which hti No. 10 on the Billboard 200 and featured the singles “Don’t Go Yet” and “Bam Bam” with Ed Sheeran. The two songs peaked at No. 42 and No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively.

SZA Presents Visionary Award to Terrence ‘Punch’ Henderson & Anthony ‘Top Dawg’ Tiffith at 2024 Billboard Power 100 Event

Clive Davis introduced nine-time 2024 Grammy nominee SZA to present the Clive Davis Visionary Award to her manager and label heads, Top Dawg Entertainment president Terrence “Punch” Henderson and Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, at Billboard’s 2024 Power 100 event last night (Jan. 31).

The star-studded event bringing together the most influential and powerful figures in music was held at Neuehouse in Hollywood, where the legendary record executive Davis took the time to outline the successes and exploits of Tiffith and Henderson since the launch of TDE in 2004.

“Throughout my career, I’ve always had the great fortune of working with truly remarkable producers who created hits and helped shape the careers of some of the biggest and brightest stars in music,” Davis said. “The executives we are honoring tonight, their names are Anthony Tiffith and Terrence Henderson; you know them as Top Dawg and Punch. They without question share the gift of all those outstanding producers who have made their mark on music history.”

Davis then turned his speech to SZA, whom he called “one of today’s most exciting music artists,” and ran through a number of the accomplishments she has racked up in the past year. “SZA’s latest acclaimed album, we all know, S.O.S., has earned a whopping nine 2024 Grammy nominations, the most of any artist this year, and it includes album of the year, record of the year, song of the year, best progressive R&B album and best R&B song,” he said. “S.O.S. was No. 1 for 10 weeks on the Billboard 200, and — this is amazing — all 23 of the album’s tracks charted on the Billboard Hot 100, with five top 10s.”

He then introduced SZA, who gave a speech that lauded Punch and Top Dawg for their vision in believing in her since the very beginning of her career.

“I was just talking to Punch the other day about how much vision he had to have to see what he saw in me with no credentials,” she said. “I really was looking insane and behaving insane and refused writers and all these things, and he believed in me. People would come to him and tell him he should change how I look, or I should be doing these kind of beats or working with these writers, and he didn’t change a single thing about me. He completely believed and constantly told me that I was the greatest, which I thought was ridiculous, and I was so grateful for his delusion. You know, Top literally also somehow had this belief in me, and I was nothing like any of my family members in TDE, I didn’t come from the same place, I was just a different type of person, and no matter how many times we would have conversations that differed, he would fight to understand me.”

She then introduced Punch and Top Dawg to speak. The latter kept it short — “You know me, I’m behind the scenes all the time; I’m like SZA, I don’t like all these cameras and the limelight,” he said — before turning it over to Punch.

“When you think about a visionary, you have to have foresight. And coming from where we come from — we both come from the Nickerson Garden projects — you have to have vision, you have to have foresight. And usually you don’t; you can’t see past your circumstances, or even see past what’s right in front of you,” he said. “So from there, we went on to be 20 years in in this business. That takes a razor-sharp vision, for sure. Even to help different artists, like a young girl from the suburbs of Maplewood, New Jersey, to reach the top of the pop charts, that’s crazy, and that also takes vision. So to the visionaries, keep seeing things with your eyes closed, and see it through.”

According to a settlement reached last month,  Morris, 33, and Hurd, 37, are dividing up their assets based on a property settlement agreement and a prenup they signed in Feb. 2018, which was amended in Oct. 2022. The couple also reportedly reached agreement on plans to evenly split time with their three-and-a-half-year-old son, Hayes Andrew, with Morris set to pay Hurd $2,100 a month in child support. The filing also reportedly noted that both Morris and Hurd had successfully completed a parenting seminar as required by Davidson County for all divorce cases involving a child.

Morris filed for divorce from Hurd in an Oct. 2 complaint in Tennessee state court, noting that the couple were “unable to live together successfully as husband and wife” and were “experiencing irreconcilable differences in their marriage.”

While they initially met in 2013, Morris and Hurd got married on March 24, 2018, in Nashville after three years of dating and welcomed their son on March 23, 2020.

Most recently, Hurd supported Morris in September when she revealed her intentions to leave the country music industry behind and issued the two-song project, The BridgeHe said on social media at the time: “She deserves to be celebrated, not just tolerated.”

SiriusXM Lost 445,000 Self-Pay Subscribers in 2023 as It Shifts Resources to New Streaming Tier

SiriusXM added 131,000 self-pay subscribers in the fourth quarter and beat its full-year guidance for earnings and free cash flow while only slightly missing its revenue goal, the company announced Thursday (Feb. 1). The satellite radio giant lost 445,000 self-pay subscribers for the full year, however.

Full-year revenue declined 0.6% to $8.95 billion, slightly below last quarter’s guidance of $9 billion. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) declined 2% to $2.8 billion, coming in a little above guidance of $2.75 billion. Free cash flow of $1.2 billion was down about 23% but beat guidance by $50 million.

SiriusXM, built on a satellite radio service favored by older consumers, is in re-building mode. The company launched a new app in November and a $9.99-per-month streaming-only subscription service aimed at younger audiences who don’t listen primarily in their cars. The app houses Sirius’ 400-plus channels in addition to an audio library and a growing stable of podcast content that includes such brands as Smartless, which earlier this week left Amazon’s Wondery after striking a $100 million deal with SiriusXM, and Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco, which SiriusXM acquired in 2022.

The strategy isn’t likely to produce results this year, though. “While early indications are showing signs of positive impacts of our business investments, it will take time for these to fully reflect in our subscriber and financial metrics,” said CEO Jennifer Witz during Thursday’s earnings call.

While SiriusXM expects “roughly level” subscriber numbers in 2024, new streaming-only subscribers pay less than satellite radio subscribers and will result in a lower average revenue per user. Those factors, along with an advertising market Witz called “uncertain,” leads the company to expect two of its key financial metrics to fall in 2024. Full-year revenue guidance of $8.75 billion would be a 2.2% decline from $8.95 billion in 2023, while adjusted EBITDA guidance of $2.7 billion would mark a 3.3% year-over-year decline. Free cash flow is expected to remain at $1.2 billion.

Investors appeared to have baked the rebuild process into their forecasts and did not react negatively to Thursday’s earnings results. Shares of SiriusXM rose as much as 5.1% on Thursday morning and closed at $5.23, up 2.8%.

SiriusXM’s satellite radio service generated full-year revenue of $6.8 billion, down 1% year over year. Self-pay subscribers grew 131,000 in the fourth quarter after falling 96,000 in the third quarter. For the full year, self-pay subscribers fell by 445,000 to approximately 34 million. Paid promotional subscribers dropped by 225,000 in the fourth quarter but increased by 15,000 for the full year.

Pandora revenue increased 1% to $1.6 billion, while its subscribers fell 3% to 6.0 million, down from 6.2 million at the end of 2022. The music streaming service finished the year with 46.0 million monthly active users, down 3.4% from 47.6 million in the prior-year period. Total ad-supported listener hours of 10.48 billion in 2023 was down 4% from 10.88 billion in 2022. Pandora’s gross profit dipped 3% to $638 million.

SiriusXM laid off 8% of its staff in March 2023, which resulted in approximately $140 million in cost savings, CFO Tom Barry said on Thursday. This year, the company is targeting nearly $200 million in additional savings, he added, that will be “reinvested” in “more targeted and more performance-oriented marketing on the streaming side.”

SiriusXM’s full-year 2023 financial metrics

  • Total revenue of $8.95 billion, down 0.6%.
  • Adjusted EBITDA of $2.8 billion, down 2%.
  • Free cash flow of $1.2 billion, down 23%.
  • SiriusXM revenue of $6.8 billion, down 1%.
  • Pandora revenue of $1.6 billion, up 1%.
  • SiriusXM satellite radio self-pay subscribers of 34 million.
  • Pandora subscribers of 6 million.
