Jelly Roll, Carrie Underwood & More Remember Toby Keith: He ‘Inspired Millions’

Musicians are raising their red Solo cups in honor of Toby Keith after news broke that the country star died on Monday (Feb. 5) after a battle with stomach cancer. He was 62. The singer-songwriter had revealed his battle to fans in 2022, a year after he was diagnosed.

Keith’s death was announced Tuesday (Feb. 6) in a statement posted to the country star’s official website and social media accounts. “Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family,” the message read. “He fought his fight with grace and courage.”

His impact was felt among many artists, who spoke out to remember the seven-time Grammy nominee.

“Toby inspired millions and I was one of them,” Jelly Roll wrote in an Instagram story, noting that he covered Keith’s 1993 Billboard Hot 100-charting song “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” at “every show last year.”

“An American icon,” singer-songwriter Randy Houser called Keith in his Instagram post, which included a video of himself singing the late artist’s 2003 hit “I Love This Bar.” “They do not make em like him everyday in my opinion. One of my favorites that he and @Scottyemerick wrote. It’s late at night or early in the morning but I wanted to sing one in his honor no matter what time it is. Rest In Peace. Job well done.”

The Country Music Hall of Fame also reflected on Keith’s career and impact on the genre. “Toby Keith was big, brash, and never bowed down or slowed down for anyone,” said Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, in a statement. “His story is a distinctly American one — a former roughneck oil worker who carved out his own space in country music with a sinewy voice and an unbending will to succeed. He wrote his breakthrough songs and later formed his own record label when he felt underserved by Nashville. He relished being an outsider and doing things his way. Proudly patriotic, he didn’t mind if his clear-cut convictions ruffled your feathers. For three decades, he reflected the defiant strength of the country music audience. His memory will continue to stand tall.”

Read on for more heartfelt tributes from musicians:

“Saddle up the horses, Jesus, ‘cause a true blue COWBOY just made his ride up to heaven!!! Introduce him to all the Okies and sign that boy up for the choir! We’re gonna miss you, Toby, but my heart has no doubt that you are standing in the presence of our King right now!!! See you again someday, friend.” — Carrie Underwood on Instagram

“RIP. A Country Music and American Legend.” — Morgan Wallen on Instagram Stories

“Just waking up to the news of Toby Keith’s passing. Today is a sad day for Country music and its fans. Toby was a huge presence in our business and someone we all looked up to and respected. You and your music will be forever remembered big man.” — Jason Aldean on X

Travis Scott Shocked Dropped His New Sneakers During The Grammys, Sold Out Immediately

66th GRAMMY Awards - Show

This past Sunday night (Feb. 4) the sneaker community was in a quick frenzy with word that Travis Scott was set to shock drop his brand new Jordan brand silhouette on his website but unfortunately that excitement was short-lived as the sneakers ended up selling out in seconds.

Though there was initially little to no hype for the Travis Scott and Nike’s “Jumpman Jack” silhouette, the sneaker community was put on notice that the sneakers had loaded on the backend of Travis Scott’s website and was rumored to drop during the Grammy Awards. While many expect it to be a raffle as every other one of his releases have been in the past, the “Jumpman Jack”‘s ended up being a “first come, first serve” affair and pairs flew off the website before anyone could blink.

With many people online claiming to have botted hundreds of pairs, the $200 pair of sneakers are now one of the hottest commodities out on the streets with GQ reporting that resellers already demanding thousands for a pair. Keep in mind, many people thought these sneakers were “meh” when pictures leaked weeks ago, but now everyone wants them but we don’t know if anyone will cough up a few grand to own a pair.

GQ reports:

The Jumpman Jack arrives in a “Mocha” colorway that’s strikingly similar to the most popular version of Travis Scott’s Jordan 1 collaboration, with a gum sole and leather strap over the laces setting it apart from the former model. The launch was marked by an expensive-looking commercial helmed by Desperado director Robert Rodriguez, which advertises the shoe as ideal for “hiking, moving, running,” as well as both “partying” and “working out.” Cue an ’80s action movie-style montage of Scott and others variously hooping, snowboarding, and zooming around on a dirtbike with the Jumpman Jack prominently displayed. What, you mean you don’t wear your grails skydiving out of a plane?

We love Robert Rodriguez ’round these parts. He doesn’t get enough props for his films (From Dusk Till Dawn, Planet Terror, Spy Kids, etc.). Just sayin.’

Check out the trailer for Travis Scott’s “Jumpman Jack” sneakers below and let us know if you copped the kicks on Grammy night or if you’d pay that ridiculous resale price in the comments section below.

Toby Keith’s 10 Best Songs: Critic’s Picks

Toby Keith came out from nowhere to become one of the major success stories of country music in 1993 with his debut single “Should’ve Been A Cowboy.” The singer rode in from Oklahoma armed with some of the strongest material that Nashville had seen in quite some time. That helped his self-titled album to be certified platinum – a sure sign of what was to come in his career.

In the three decades that have passed since that debut, Keith provided fans with songs to fit just about every emotion – love, happiness, pain, loss and even a little bit of rage at a time when others in the United States were feeling the same emotion.

In 2021, Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer. “Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer,” Keith tweeted in 2022. “I’ve spent the last 6 months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery. So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax. I am looking forward to spending time with my family. But I will see the fans sooner than later. I can’t wait.”

On Feb. 6, a statement on his official website announced the sad news that Keith had passed away at age 62. “Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”

Here are 10 times that Toby Keith has tapped into the American consciousness with some of his best songs.

Wallen has earned 10 No. 1 Billboard Country Airplay hits and has sold out arenas and stadiums on his One Night at a Time tour. But he’s also been deeply involved in writing many of his own chart-topping hits including “7 Summers,” “Chasin’ You,” “You Proof” and “Thought You Should Know.” Wallen’s third studio album, One Thing at a Time, has spent 18 weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart, and was named Luminate’s top album of 2023 in the U.S. Wallen was honored with the songwriter of the year accolade at the 2023 BMI Country Awards last year.

As a songwriter, Wallen’s prolific abilities as a songwriter have extended to writing songs that have become hits for Kane Brown, Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, Corey Kent and other artists.

Wallen said in a statement: “I look forward to working with Warner Chappell as my new music publishing partner and would like to thank them for also offering support in signing songwriters I believe in. In many ways, I feel like I’ve always been a songwriter first, and because of that, the publishing community is especially close to my heart. I’m honored to use this partnership as an opportunity to give other songwriters a helping hand. Thanks to Ben, Phil, Jessi, and their great team.”

Ben Vaughn, president/CEO, Warner Chappell Music Nashville, said in a statement, “When you listen to the craftsmanship of songs that Morgan is writing, such as the modern-day classics ‘7 Summers’ and ‘Thought You Should Know,’ and the impactful songs he’s written for other artists like ‘You Make It Easy’ (Jason Aldean) and ‘Wild As Her’ (Corey Kent), you start to understand that the man from East Tennessee is quickly becoming one of the most important songwriters of this generation. Our entire Warner Chappell team is so proud of the opportunity to represent his songs.”

Jessi Vaughn Stevenson, Sr. Director, A&R and Digital, Warner Chappell Music Nashville, added, “Morgan’s songwriting style has been original and distinct from the beginning and it is so exciting to get to work with someone who has seen massive commercial success built on authenticity.”

Adele Adds Two Final Shows to Munich Summer Run

Adele has turned a few overseas dates into a mini stay-put run. After initially announcing four exclusive dates in Munich at a bespoke 80,000-capacity venue on August. 2, 3, 9 and 10, the singer quickly doubled that commitment to include shows on August 14, 16, 23 and 24.

And, on Tuesday (Feb. 6), due to “unprecedented demand,” Adele added what she said were the “final” shows at Munich Messe, slated to take place on August 30 and 31. The dates at the stadium described as an “open-air environment that has been exclusively created for these special shows,” mark Adele’s first shows on the Continent since 2016.

Adele is on the backside of her first-ever concert residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, which kicked off on Nov. 2022 and is slated to wind down on June 15.

“So a few months ago I got a call about a summer run of shows. I’ve been content as anything with my shows in London’s Hyde Park and my residency in Vegas, so I hadn’t had any other plans,” Adele wrote on Instagram when she announced the first Munich shows. “However, I was too curious to not follow up and indulge in this idea – a one off, bespoke pop-up stadium designed around whatever show I want to put on.”

Though she has shied away from mounting global tours since her 2016-2017 global trek in support of her 25 album, in a recent video posted by fans she hinted that she may be hitting the road again at some point. “I just don’t think I’m gonna write an album for quite some time,” Adele said. “But next time I do,” she continued, “I’ll come to wherever it is you live.”

More Than One Third of TikTok’s Most Popular Songs Are Gone After UMG Fallout

More than one third of the songs — at least 17 tracks — on Billboard’s TikTok Top 50 chart are no longer available for use on the app after Universal Music Group‘s negotiations with the platform fell apart last week. UMG said the Bytedance-owned company refuses to pay “fair value for the music.”

The missing tracks include several of the most popular songs on TikTok: Muni Long’s “Made for Me” (No. 2 on the TikTok Top 50), Xavi’s “La Diabla” (No. 7), Drake’s “Rich Baby Daddy” (No. 9), and Lana Del Rey’s “Let the Light In” (No. 11).

The absence impacts both recent releases — Ariana Grande’s “Yes, And?” along with a pair of songs from Nicki Minaj’s December album — and catalog: Lesley Gore’s “Misty,” originally released way back in 1963, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor,” which came out in 2002 but charted on the Hot 100 for the first time recently due to a synch in the film Saltburn

Users still appear to be able to still make videos with an official “orchestral version” of “Murder on the Dancefloor” — likely because it’s licensed to a different label. And even though UMG and TikTok’s licensing agreement expired, 10k.Caash’s “Aloha,” which was released by the UMG label Def Jam in 2019, is available to soundtrack TikTok videos as of Thursday morning.

In addition, TikTok has long had a vibrant bootleg scene, which means that in some cases, users have uploaded their own versions of UMG songs or made remixes in place of the official sounds. Those bootlegs were also a source of frustration for the record company, which said last week that “TikTok makes little effort to deal with the vast amounts of content on its platform that infringe our artists’ music.” It’s worth noting, however, that labels often encourage remixers to rework their artists’ songs without the proper clearances in the hopes that it starts a viral trend.

TikTok has been a dominant force in the music industry since 2019, transforming both marketing and signing strategy. “We fully immerse ourselves in the diverse subcultures of TikTok,” said Alec Henderson, vp of digital at the independent label APG, in December. “We have weekly meetings dedicated to sharing things that we’re seeing there. We view the TikTok viral chart with a competitive mindset. And we put a high emphasis on working with artists that are native to the platform.”

As the industry became increasingly focused on TikTok, it also became increasingly uneasy about the platform’s power. The app became increasingly saturated — brands, movies, videogames, cats, ASMR, you name it — which made marketing music both more expensive and less effective. Labels are used to having some level of influence over promotional levers; TikTok proved frustratingly hard to leverage.

Tension over the platform’s low payouts started to grow as well. TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, “doesn’t view music as a value add,” one senior executive told Billboard in the fall of 2022. “They just view music as a cost center they have to limit as much as possible.”

“The [payout] numbers are horrifying,” said a manager at the time. A marketer who oversaw the campaign for a single that was used in roughly half a million TikTok videos, earning billions of views, found that his artist took home less than $5,000 from the platform. It was no surprise when UMG CEO Lucian Grainge fired a warning shot late in 2022, noting pointedly at an industry conference that a value gap was “forming fast in the new iterations of short-form video.”

Last week, Universal Music Group said that its license agreement with TikTok was set to expire on Jan. 31. “TikTok proposed paying our artists and songwriters at a rate that is a fraction of the rate that similarly situated major social platforms pay,” UMG said in an open letter. The record company accused TikTok of trying to “intimidate us into conceding to a bad deal that undervalues music and shortchanges artists and songwriters as well as their fans.”

After UMG issued its statement, TikTok hit back, accusing the record company of promoting a “false narrative.” It’s “sad and disappointing,” TikTok added, “that [UMG] has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters.” These comments elicited yet another response from UMG.

If the standoff between the two companies continues, it will start to affect even more music: At the end of the month, TikTok will have to take down any song that Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) has a stake in. Many UMPG songwriters collaborate with artists signed to other labels (or are signed as artists on other labels). This means that the number of songs that become unusable on TikTok could balloon.

Artists can market their music elsewhere, of course — TikTok has competitors in both YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels. However, neither of those apps have demonstrated the ability to break a song with the speed and intensity of TikTok.

Usher Forgets He’s the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show Headliner in Uber Eats’ Ad: Watch

OMG! Usher‘s forgotten he’s performing at the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show in Uber Eats’ new commercial for the Big Game, which dropped on Tuesday (Feb. 6).

The star-studded spot kicks off with Friends star Jennifer Aniston receiving an Uber Eats order from an assistant, who was surprised at all the various items — flowers and lotion, for example — the service can deliver. “You know what they say: ‘In order to remember something, you gotta forget something else,’” the Emmy-winning star shares, before pointing to her head and noting, “Make a little room!”

From there, a range of people erase a little knowledge to keep Uber Eats in mind, including David and Victoria Beckham. “Remember when you used to be a pepper lady?” the soccer star asks Posh, who’s in a white “David’s Wife” T-shirt.

“Wasn’t it the Cinnamon Sisters?” she wonders, before the athlete offers up “Basil Babes,” and the designer-singer suggests “Paprika Girls” instead, to which David answers, “No! That’s absurd!”

As Billboard previously exclusively shared in a teaser, Uber Eats’ ad also features country star Jelly Roll forgetting he has face tattoos. “Did someone doodle on my face?!” the “Son of a Sinner” singer asks, horrified, when he see his reflection in a mirror. As he tries to rub the ink off, he screams, “It’s not coming off!”

At the end of the ad — after Aniston has forgotten major period of her life (and a very good Friend) — the eight-time Grammy winner chills with his Uber Eats meal and says wistfully to his two horrified stagehands backstage, “I hope I get to play a halftime show someday, man.”

Fortunately for Usher, that wish is coming true much sooner rather than later. The R&B icon is set to headline the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday (Feb. 11). The Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will face off in the NFL’s championship game beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Mariah Carey Returns to Las Vegas With ‘The Celebration of Mimi’

Mariah Carey will show Las Vegas where she belongs — for a third time — with the debut of The Celebration of Mimi, April 12 through April 27 at Dolby Live in Park MGM. The “exclusive engagement” (April 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 24, 26 and 27) toasts the 19th anniversary of The Emancipation of Mimi (released on April 12, 2005).

A statement shared with Billboard states that “the Las Vegas shows will feature fan favorites from that album as well as other hits from her unparalleled illustrious career.”

The Emancipation of Mimi, with hits such as “We Belong Together” and “Shake It Off,” was one of the top-selling albums of its year and is known within her catalog as the “comeback album.”

Making another comeback — this time on the Strip — The Celebration of Mimi engagement, backed by Live Nation and MGM Resorts, follows Carey’s first two residencies at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, #1 to Infinity (2015-2017) and The Butterfly Returns (2018-2020). Infinity was a chronological performance of her 18 No. 1 hits, starting with 1990’s “Vision of Love” and ending with 2008’s “Touch My Body.” While that show focused on Carey the entertainer, “Butterfly” capitalized on Carey the singer with a powerful 23-song set list of big hits, surprises and her own personal favorites. Since 2020, Carey has mostly performed and toured with her holiday music.

Carey got her break in 1990 with the smash hit “Vision of Love” and since sold more than 200 million albums with 19 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles. Just days ago the five-octave-range singer accepted the Global Impact Award during the Recording Academy Honors presented by the Black Music Collective.

Tickets will go on sale to the public Saturday, Feb. 10 for April 12, 13, 17, 19, 20, 24, 26 and 27.

Limited to only eight dates, it seems as if Carey is taking a page from Kelly Clarkson’s Las Vegas strategy book. Last year, Clarkson announced a 10-date run of Chemistry. All shows sold-out. Since then, she has picked select weekends to return including New Years and Super Bowl. With this being the third chapter in her Las Vegas legacy, the chances of more dates coming down the line seem probable.

Carey’s announcement follows last week’s news that Mexican group Los Bukis will perform the Strip’s first-ever full Latin and Spanish-language residency, launching May 3 at Dolby Live at Park MGM. The theater is also home to Bruno Mars, Maroon 5 and Lady Gaga.
