Live Nation Stock Sinks on Antitrust News, Hipgnosis Shares Soar After Takeover Bid

Live Nation shares fell 10.9% to $89.98 this week after The Wall Street Journal reported the U.S. Department of Justice plans to file a lawsuit against the company in the coming weeks. The DOJ could seek any number of remedies, but, in recent years, there have been calls from both the public and private sectors to break up the company and separate the concert promotion business from the ticketing business.

In February, Senator Amy Klobuchar, who helped organize the Jan. 2023 Senate hearing at which Live Nation president/CFO Joe Berchtold testified, called on lawmakers to “update and enforce antitrust laws” to prevent Live Nation and Ticketmaster from working on concert to “keep ticket prices high.”

“This merger never should have been allowed to happen,” Klobuchar wrote on X in February. “Break them up,” Senator Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote in November 2022 following the Taylor Swift pre-sale fiasco. Likewise, the American Economic Liberties Project and the American Antitrust Institute have both called for the DOJ to break up the company.

Trending on Billboard

Live Nation shares have fallen 15.1% in the four weeks since the week ended March 22 but remain up 34.3% year to date. The company will report first-quarter earnings on May 2.

The large declines seen among some of the most valuable music companies caused the Billboard Global Music Index to drop 4.5% this week — its largest one-week loss since November 2022. That brought the index’s decline over the past two weeks to 7.5% after it reached an all-time high the week ended April 5.

Major stock indexes also suffered substantial losses this week. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite fell 5.5% to 15,282.01 as video streaming giant Netflix and chipmaker Nvidia fell 9.1% and 10%, respectively, on Friday (April 19). The S&P 500 dropped 3.0% to 4,967.23. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 fell just 1.2% to 7,895.85. South Korea’s KOSPI composite index lost 3.4% to 2,591.86. China’s Shanghai Composite Index was an outlier, rising 1.5% to 3,065.26.

Radio giant iHeartMedia had the biggest decline of the week after dropping 12.8% to $1.90. That brought the company’s year-to-date loss to 28.8% and its 52-week decline to 54.3%. Music streaming leader Spotify suffered the largest drop in terms of lost market capitalization, however, after an 8.2% decline, to $275.79, raised $4.9 billion of market value. Spotify will release first-quarter earnings on Tuesday (April 23).

Hipgnosis Songs Fund shares predictably surged this week on news that Concord has offered to acquire the company for $1.4 billion, or $1.16 (0.94 pounds) per share. The stock finished the week up 24.2% to 0.919 pounds ($1.14), just under Concord’s offer price. The board encouraged shareholders to accept Concord’s bid, which was a 32.2% premium over the prior day’s closing price. That would provide immediate returns, the board explained, because the company needs “substantial financial and governance changes to improve its financial performance” that will suppress the share price in the meantime.

The other big gainers for the week came from South Korea. HYBE gained 8.2% to 230,500 won ($167.70) and SM Entertainment rose 4.0% to 78,100 won ($56.82). Year to date, HYBE is down 1.3% and SM Entertainment is off 15.2%.

Taylor Swift Unveils ‘Fortnight’ Video — Along With Her Face Covered in Post Malone’s Tattoos

In case you’ve always wondered what Taylor Swift would look like with Post Malone‘s face tattoos, “Fortnight” is the video for you.

On Friday night (April 19), Swift unveiled the video for “Fortnight,” featuring Malone. It’s the first visual from her brand-new 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department, and it goes alongside the project’s first single, co-written by Swift, Malone and Jack Antonoff and co-produced by Swift and Antonoff.

In the trippy video, Post’s tattoos end up on Taylor’s face as she appears to wipe her face clean, only to reveal a face full of ink instead. In apparent flashback scenes, both of the musicians are fresh-faced, as Swift runs into the arms of a tattoo-free Malone.

Echoing the song’s lyrical references to institution (like the opening line: “I was supposed to be sent away/ But they forgot to come and get me”), the video shows Swift’s character going through electrotherapy and trying to break out of an all-white room.

Watch the video below:

Swift announced “Fortnight” as the first single early Thursday, the day before the album’s arrival. “The first single from The Tortured Poets Department is…………. Fortnight featuring @postmalone,” Swift wrote on X. “I’ve been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever. I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight.”

Shortly after Swift announced The Tortured Poets Department at the 2024 Grammys in February, Malone was revealed to be one of only two features on the track list (the other being Florence + The Machine on “Florida!!!”). Last year, before their collaboration had been announced, Malone recalled running into Swift in an interview with Howard Stern and exchanging compliments. “We were just passing by and she was like, ‘Oh my God! Nice to see you. “Better Now” is f—in’ amazing!’” Malone said Swift told him. “And I was like, ‘What? That’s f—in’ crazy, you’re a great f—in’ songwriter! Thank you so very much.’”

For a while now Sexyy Red has been the talk of the town for a bevy of reasons, and though she tends to be overlooked due to the popularity of other female rappers such as Ice Spice and Megan Thee Stallion, Red continues to do her thing and steal the spotlight any chance she gets.

Lending her talents to Chief Keef and Mike WiLL Made-It for their visuals to “DAMN SHORTY,” Sexyy Red and company hit the streets in some exotic automobiles before hitting up a fancy restaurant where they take in an elegant meal while smoking on some bud much to the “delight” of the waiters and host. Who’s telling them they can’t smoke indoors?

On the R&B tip, Rod Wave looks to spend some time with the homies and in his clip to “Numb” hosts a poker night with the fellas where they play cards and sip on some potion before hitting the Waffle House for some munchies.

Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from Mozzy, Gloss Up featuring Jacquees, and more.

It’s Friday, April 19th, and there’s been a ton of new singles dropped by some of your favorite artists! Taylor Swift announced “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone, as her lead single prior to the release of her new double album, ‘The Tortured Poets Department.’ Nicki Minaj released her new single, “FTCU Remix” and after previewing “Teka” at Coachella, DJ Snake & Peso Pluma collab on a new single today. Let’s start off with Taylor dropping not one, but two albums today running a total of 31 songs spanning over 2 hours. ATEEZ talks about performing at Coachella. Dwayne Johnson stars in a new music video alongside country artist Chris Janson for his new song “Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get.” Afrobeat artists Bnxn & Ruger sit down with us to talk about their online “beef,” New Album ‘RnB’ and more!

Tetris Kelly:

We’re breaking down Taylor’s new albums and all the hottest new music, talking to ATEEZ ahead of Coachella weekend two, and chatting with besties Chris Janson and Dwayne Johnson plus Bnxn and Ruger stopped by our studio. It’s Friday, April 19, and let’s get started with our Friday Music Guide. Taylor unleashed “The Tortured Poets Department’ and at 2am announced it was a double, anthology album. The first single of 31 songs is “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone. And our Taylor coverage doesn’t stop there. We’re breaking down ‘The Tortured Poets Department.’ After Taylor Swift gifted Swifties with her Post Malone first single and a surprise double album, the Internet exploded with theories of who and what it’s all about, with even Kim Kardashian catching a stray. We break down what they’re saying. After her breakup with six year boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, Swifties thought they’d hear the pop star sing all about it on the album as they think you do on songs like “So Long London” and “loml” which can mean love of my life but also d*mn girl. But is “loml” about Joe? The real d*mn girl, most of the songs seem to be about her dating stint with Matty Healy.  Swifties have decoded lyrics about typewriters and even concluded she was disappointed in fans and the media for making her turn on him. Also check the spelling on “thanK you aIMee” and Swifties are obsessed with this lyric and the

Mandisa Remembered as ‘A True Beacon of Light’ by Paula Abdul, Taylor Hicks, Danny Gokey & More

On Thursday, the music world lost an irreplaceable voice. In a statement to Billboard, a representative for Grammy-winning Christian contemporary music artist and American Idol alum Mandisa confirmed that the singer passed at age 47 in her home.

“We can confirm that yesterday Mandisa was found in her home deceased,” read the statement. “At this time, we do not know the cause of death or any further details. We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

A contestant on season 5 of American Idol, Mandisa went on to find considerable success in the Christian music industry. All six of her studio albums reached the Billboard 200, with half of those LPs reaching No. 1 on the Top Christian Albums chart: 2007’s True Beauty, 2013’s Overcomer and 2017’s Out of the Dark. She has also sent several songs onto Hot Christian Songs, including the chart-toppers “Stronger” and “Overcomer,” the latter of which spent a whopping 10 weeks atop the ranking.

Trending on Billboard

In 2014, Mandisa won her first and only Grammy, taking home best contemporary Christian music album for Overcomer. In addition to her five career Grammy nominations, the star accumulated 15 GMA Dove Award nominations, including a win for pop/contemporary album of the year for Overcomer.

On Friday (April 19), Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper Paul Abdul, who served as a judge during Mandisa’s Idol season, called the late vocalist a “true beacon of light.” In a statement to People, she said, “Her warmth and unwavering kindness towards everyone, even in the face of harsh criticism, was truly unmatched. Not only was she a beautiful person, but she was also a true powerhouse performer.”

“I still think of her taking the stage during American Idol to perform her rendition of Chaka Khan‘s ‘I’m Every Woman’ and absolutely brought the house down,” she continued. “I’ll always remember her poise, grace and dignity — and how could anyone forget those incomparable vocals!”

Read on for more tributes to the late Mandisa, including messages of love and remembrance from fellow American Idol alums like Danny Gokey and season 5 champ Taylor Hicks.

“An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time – one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure,” Swift wrote of the track upon its release via Instagram. “This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it. And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry.”

The Tortured Poets Department 31-song tracklist features two major collaborations: Post Malone, whose name is billed on the lead single, “Fortnight,” as well as Florence + The Machine on track eight, “Florida!!!”

Benson Boone’s ‘Beautiful Things’ Hits No. 1 on Pop Airplay Chart

Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” rises to No. 1 on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart (dated April 27).

Boone lands his initial leader on the survey. He previously charted two songs on Pop Airplay: “Ghost Town” (No. 24 peak in March 2022) and “In the Stars” (No. 36, September 2023).

Plus, with the track on Night Street/Warner Records, Warner has promoted two consecutive Pop Airplay No. 1s for the first time, as “Beautiful Things” replaces Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control,” on SWIMS Int./Warner, after two weeks on top.

Additionally, with “Beautiful Things” at No. 1 and “Lose Control” at No. 2, Warner claims the top two titles on Pop Airplay simultaneously for the time.

(The Pop Airplay chart, which began in October 1992, ranks songs by weekly plays on over 150 mainstream top 40 radio stations monitored by Mediabase, with data provided to Billboard by Luminate.)

“Beautiful Things” has ruled the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for eight weeks and the Billboard Global 200 for seven frames (through charts dated April 20). It leads Adult Pop Airplay for a second week. On the Billboard Hot 100, it has reached a No. 2 high.

“Beautiful Things,” which Boone co-wrote, is on his debut LP, Fireworks & Rollerblades, released April 5. The set launched at No. 6 on the April 20-dated Billboard 200 chart.

“I wrote it on my piano,” the Washington native recently told Billboard of the song’s origin. “I’d just moved to L.A., and I’d moved my grandma’s old piano to my living room. I couldn’t sleep one night, and I didn’t know what to do, so I came downstairs and started playing the piano. That’s when I wrote the melodies.

“It was inspired by a relationship that I had just gotten into,” Boone further mused. “For the first time in my life, I felt like I was extremely out of control of the way this relationship would turn out. Meaning like, in the past, I feel like I’ve always known that I could be the one to end a relationship. This one felt very different. It was the first time that I’d really been actually, genuinely terrified to lose something.”

All Billboard charts dated April 27 will update Tuesday, April 23, on Billboard.com.

ATEEZ Talk About Being the First K-Pop Boy Band to Perform at Coachella & More | Billboard News

ATEEZ talk about being the first K-pop boy band to perform at Coachella. The boys discussed their preparation and confidence in their performance and how they were inspired by other artists’ sets they watched, including Ice Spice, Tyler, the Creator, Doja Cat and J Balvin.

Tetris Kelly:

Hey, it’s Tetris with Billboard News hanging out with ATEEZ. What’s up? I know it’s been a minute. Being the first ever K-pop boy group to play Coachella, how was it?

San:

It was really hard, but we’re gonna just show ourselves and that’s what we’ve been doing so far. And we are 100% confident about it. It was really cool. It was really cool. It was really an honor to us, and we will do more and more.

Hongjoong:

We just do our things continually. Many, many good artists and many good K-pop artists … go to huge festivals continually.

Tetris Kelly:

And then I heard you over there talking about Ice Spice — did you guys get to go see anybody else’s set while you were there?

Hongjoong:

Yeah, some of our members went to Ice Spice’s set, but it was crazy. We were really surprised with every moment.

San:

A few members watching Coachella at other artists’ stage and they were really crazy. J Balvin and Doja’s and The Rose, we really learned from them.

Hongjoong:

Yes, I think Tyler, the Creator and Doja and J Balvin in the three stages gave me big inspiration. So after that, I just make music after going back to the hotel.

Tetris Kelly:

Oh, I love it. You were right back to work! Yeah, that’s cool. Have you guys been on TikTok lately? Because you’re all over TikTok.
