Netherlands’ Joost Klein Barred From Eurovision Rehearsals After ‘Incident’

Joost Klein, the Netherlands’ representative in the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, is being investigated by the European Broadcasting Union for an “incident.” No details have been made public yet, but Klein is suspended from rehearsals. It is not known if he will be able to continue in the competition.

The EBU statement did not shine much light on the situation: “We are investigating an incident reported to us concerning the Dutch artist. He will not be rehearsing until further notice. We have no further comment at this time and will update in due course.”

The second dress rehearsal for the grand final is now underway at the Malmö Arena in Sweden. The Netherlands is in fifth position. Nothing will seem amiss in the venue. SVT, the Swedish TV broadcaster, will use Klein’s rehearsal from semi-final 2 unless the incident is cleared up in the next few minutes. The EBU is in talks with Dutch broadcaster Avrotros.

Trending on Billboard

The broadcast begins with the traditional “flag parade,” with the artists striding on the stage in performance order. Klein appeared in the ceremony in the first dress rehearsal on Friday (May 10) afternoon. When it was time for him to perform, his stage props were being set up on stage when they were suddenly removed. He was absent from the evening rehearsal flag ceremony. The voiceover announcer proclaimed, “Netherlands,” but no one appeared to show off the nation’s flag.

The dress rehearsal currently underway is an important one; the national juries are watching and will cast their votes tonight.

While details about the incident are not known, Billboard got wind of speculation that there was a backstage incident between Klein and someone working on the show — but cannot confirm anything. There was tension between Klein and Israel’s singer, Eden Golan, at a Thursday (May 9) night press conference for the 10 qualifying countries in semi-final 2. Golan was asked if her presence at the contest presented a security risk.

The moderator told Golan she need not answer, and Klein shouted out, “Why not?” Golan then voluntarily said that the EBU was committed to a safe and inclusive environment for all. The assembled press corps burst into applause.

Israel follows Netherlands in the running order, so it is likely that the two artists were in close proximity during the afternoon rehearsal.

This is a developing story.

NBA Legend Shaquille O’Neal Drops Shannon Sharpe Diss Track Following NBA MVP Criticism

Shaquille O’Neal is no stranger to the rap world and with beef running rampant throughout the genre, the NBA icon is ready for battle.

NFL Hall-of-Famer Shannon Sharpe heavily criticized Shaq on his Nightcap podcast earlier this week after the former Laker critiqued Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic winning a third NBA MVP in four years.

Shaq said that Oklahoma City guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander “deserved” to win the title, and he candidly told that to Jokic’s face in an interview after collecting his latest accolade.

Sharpe took issue with O’Neal’s remarks. “Shaq should have five MVP’s,” he said. “He sees a guy like Nikola Jokic that’s not as dominant as him and gets three in four years. When you historically great, they talk about you as a great basketball player, the GOAT, and Shaq is never brought up.

Trending on Billboard

Sharpe continued, accusing Shaq of jealousy. “I think a part of him is envious of that … It’s hard for me to put someone in the GOAT conversation with one MVP. If Shaq would have had my work ethic, he would have had 40,000 points,” he added.

O’Neal took to Instagram early Friday (May 10) to serve up a scintillating and long-winded response on his Instagram featuring a photo that had Sharpe ranked at the No. 51 best player of all time.

“You took me sticking up for @shai as jealousy?? Shows how smart you are and how you say anything to get clicks. so here’s some click bait for you. if you ain’t ranked in the top ten in your profession , then you can’t speak on Me. don’t forget i know what you did to get where you at,” he wrote.

“Me jealous lol sounds like you jealous. i kno you tryna stay relevant by gossiping on your podcast. we don’t believe you. you need more people and in case you forgot. 4 rings three finals Mvp top 50 and top 75. google me.”

His caption sounded as if it could’ve been a fiery rap. Hours later, Shaq served up an actual Shannon Sharpe diss track on Friday’s episode of The Big Podcast.

“Oh no, Shannon Sharpe man, you’re way beneath me/ Your whole demeanor is faker than new rapper beefy/ You’re soft before you get fly, you’d rather tweet me/ I was in three different cars when you was in three feet/ All I see is dollar signs, they coming in 3-D,” he spews.

“Make it hot, ain’t no way around my degrees/ You are not in my spot, you are like a peewee/ I’ve got him calling me Rocky the way I RiRi,” he spit. “I get to the green bag, I don’t mean a lawnmower/ Jet flying, foreign driving, best buying, downpour.”

John Mayer Pens Letter Clarifying His Friendship With Andy Cohen

John Mayer is setting the record straight.

The “Your Body Is a Wonderland” singer penned a letter in response to a recent The Hollywood Reporter interview with TV host Andy Cohen, who has maintained a close friendship with Mayer over the years. “Your friendship with Mayer has been the subject of intense speculation,” the reporter, co-editor in chief Maer Roshan, asked, in regards to tabloids speculating the nature of the relationship between openly gay Cohen and openly straight Mayer. “People seem dubious that a straight rock star can have a close, platonic relationship with a gay TV personality.”

In response, Cohen said, “Let them speculate. I honestly love John Mayer, and he loves me. But because we are so affectionate to each other, people don’t know what box to put that in. They assume we are sleeping with each other, which we are most definitely not.”

However, Mayer took it a step further, sending an email to Roshan personally. In his letter, he noted the history of friendships between straight and gay people, and gave the public the benefit of being able to discern that friendship comes in all forms. “I’d like to think they’re sophisticated enough to see a relationship like ours without assuming it must include a sexual component,” he wrote. “That turns the concept of being gay into an ignorantly two-dimensional one, which I know you know it’s not. I don’t question that at all.”

Trending on Billboard

He concluded, “Reinforcing the idea that any gay/straight relationship needs qualification that it’s not sexual devoids everyone involved of their dignity.”

Cohen and Mayer have had an envy-worthy, mutually caring friendship for years, stemming back to 2015 when they went on a road trip together to watch the Grateful Dead, whom they both love. “John Mayer is someone who is very in touch with his emotions He very quickly in our friendship started saying, ‘You know what, I gotta tell you something — I love you,’” Cohen said in a 2022 Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi interview of their friendship. “He is someone to say, ‘I love you and I cherish you and I cherish our friendship’ — just this stuff that straight guys aren’t necessarily supposed to say.”

Read the full letter, via THR, below.

Hi Mr. Roshan,

I read your interview with Andy Cohen, and was intrigued by your line of questioning regarding our friendship. You posited that “your friendship with Mayer has been a subject of intense speculation. People seem dubious that a straight rock star can have a close platonic relationship with a gay TV personality.”

I think this is somewhat of a specious premise. First, there is a long and storied history of “rock stars” (not mocking, just won’t refer to myself as one) befriending gay icons and artists.

Second, I think that to suggest that people are dubious of a friendship like mine and Andy’s is to undermine the public’s ability to accept and understand diversity in all facets of culture, be it in art or in real life. I’d like to think they’re sophisticated enough to see a relationship like ours without assuming it must include a sexual component. That turns the concept of being gay into an ignorantly two-dimensional one, which I know you know it’s not. I don’t question that at all.

I love intelligent discourse — as I hope you’ll find this email to be — but I bristle at your selectively flimsy logic meant to coax an answer, when the premise itself is so deeply flawed, and quite possibly not even quantitatively true.

Quite simply, if someone is dubious of a platonic relationship between a straight man and a gay man, I don’t think that shallow a view deserves clarification by anyone with self respect, be it Andy or your publication. Reinforcing the idea that any gay/straight relationship needs qualification that it’s not sexual devoids everyone involved of their dignity.

Respectfully,
John Mayer

Tee Grizzley & Future Go Off in Video for New Song ‘Swear to God’

We’ve been had! We’ve been took! We’ve been hoodwinked! Bamboozled! Yesterday, everyone (including us) assumed Future was dropping a mixtape after the Atlanta rapper posted a series of tweets on X saying his album is better than [insert rapper’s] mixtape and even evoked his “Mixtape Pluto” moniker.

Everyone also thought he had beef with Gunna because Gunna tweeted this out:

However, Gunna was talking about his new album in which he appears to takes shots at — you guessed it— Drake. Yeah, that Drake. Meanwhile, Future was referring to this new track with Tee Grizzley all along. We’re not mad at it, though, because both of them went off. In the video, they post up at the jewelry store, the gas station, and Kiki at the River in Miami to give us a banger.

Future hops out the whip and starts things off with the bar that got everyone talking: “F—k your album, s—t ain’t slappin’ like my mixtape.” Future seems to be in a zone and he showed why here. The Detroit rapper was talking heavy, as well, spittin’, “Street n—a from the trenches, swear to God, I made millions (I did)/I went and made that, n—s gave you that, b—h n—a, it’s a difference (Be cool)/N—s losin’, we winnin’, want smoke ’cause they in they feelings.”

The song is hard, but we thought Mixtape Pluto was making a comeback. His fans felt the same way, too. Check out some of their reactions below.

Stray Kids’ Chart Success on U.S. & Global Billboard Charts | Billboard Explains

Stray Kids are back and better than ever with new single “Lose My Breath,” a collaboration with Charlie Puth. The boy band has had several hits, so let’s take a look back at the K-pop group’s chart success on the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200 and Global chart with songs such as “LALALALA” and “Hellevator.”

Stray Kids:
Hello, everyone, we are Stray Kids!

Narrator:
They’re back with a new collaboration with Charlie Puth called “Lose My Breath.” To celebrate, we’re looking at their chart accomplishments. This is Billboard Explains: Stray Kids Chart Success.

Stray Kids made their U.S. Billboard chart debut with “Hellevator.” The song debuted on the World Digital Song Sales Chart back in November 2017. “Hellevator” was the first of their 27 top 10s on the chart, with four No. 1s: “Mixtape: OH” in 2021, and “MANIAC,” “CASE 143” and “LALALALA” all in 2023.

“LALALALA” was also the group’s first Hot 100 hit, peaking at No. 90.

Stray Kids have had big success on the Billboard 200. All four of their charting projects have debuted at No. 1. 2022’s Oddinary: EP and Maxident, and 2023’s 5-Star and ROCK-STAR. The group was the first act to have their first four charting albums all reach No. 1 since Alicia Keys achieved that feat in 2007.

Over on the Billboard Global 200, Stray Kids have had seven songs make that chart, with “LALALALA” reaching the highest peak — No. 10 in 2023.

We can’t wait to see where Stray Kids goes next on the Billboard charts.

Billboard Explains: Stray Kids’ Chart Success

Leave it to Stray Kids to keep the hits coming! On Friday (May 10), the Billboard Music Award-winning K-pop group released its new Charlie Puth-assisted single, “Lose My Breath,” marking the group’s third single of 2024. In celebration of the new release, Billboard is looking back on the boy band’s impressive chart history.

Stray Kids made its Billboard chart debut back in 2017 with “Hellevator,” which eventually peaked at No. 6 on World Digitial Song Sales. That spunky track became the group’s first of 27 top 10 hits on the chart, including four chart-toppers. 2021’s “Mixtape: Oh,” became their first song to top the ranking, and the following year, they added two additional No. 1 hits with “Maniac” and “Case 143.” 2023’s “Lalalala” is the group’s most recent track to reach the summit.

“Lalalala” also served as Stray Kids’ first Billboard Hot 100, topping out at No. 90. Over on the Billboard 200, SKZ has achieved remarkable success. All four of the group’s charting projects — 2022’s Maxident and Stray Kids Mini Album: Oddinary (EP) and 2023’s Rock-Star and 5-Star — debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s all-genre albums chart. Stray Kids is the first act to send its first four charting albums to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since Alicia Keys (2001-2007).

On the Billboard Global 200, the boy band has notched seven entries, including its sole top 10, “Lalalala” (No. 10) in 2023.

With their new Charlie Puth collab set to ignite the charts soon, Stray Kids is on track to continue adding to its arsenal of Billboard chart achievements.

Queer Jams of the Week: New Music From Lil Nas X, Beabadoobee, Orville Peck & More

With Pride season just a few short weeks away, there’s no better time to prepare with new tracks from your favorite queer artists. Billboard Pride is proud to present the latest edition of Queer Jams of the Week, our roundup of some of the best new music releases from LGBTQ artists.

From Camila Cabello and Lil Nas X’s flirty new collaboration to Beabadoobee’s dreamy new single, check out just a few of our favorite releases from this week below:

Camila Cabello feat. Lil Nas X, “He Knows”

There’s nothing quite like a Friday night out after a stunningly bad week, so Camila Cabello and Lil Nas X decided to bring you an anthem for those unhinged evenings on the town. While “He Knows” continues Cabello’s divisive dance-pop release strategy, the new track takes a few small steps back from “I Luv It,” focusing on a laid-back groove and entrancing vocals rather than a turbocharged beat. And it turns out Lil Nas and Camila make for excellent collaborators, matching one another’s sultry energy with each passing bar to let the boys at the club know that they’re on the prowl.

Trending on Billboard

Beabadoobee, “Take a Bite”

Beabadoobee is back, and with “Take a Bite,” she’s sharper than ever. The introspective pop-rock ballad follows Bea Kristi through her own occasionally intrusive thoughts about the grass being greener on the other side of everything — relationships, careers, and everything in between. Her silky voice glides over a simple beat and some sumptuous guitar chords, making “Take a Bite” an excellent return for the singer-songwriter.

Orville Peck, Stampede: Vol. 1

For his third studio album, Orville Peck is throwing a celebration. On Stampede: Vol. 1, the country crooner is teaming up with stars from all over the spectrum of music to toast their game-changing contributions to country, rock, pop and Americana. Between his excellent duet with Willie Nelson on “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other” and his rollicking rendition with Elton John to “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting),” plus collaborations with Allison Russell, Nathaniel Rateliff and plenty more, Peck proves that he’s more than just a singer with a mask — he’s a world-class curator paying tribute to the stars who helped pave the way for him.

Adam Lambert, “Whataya Want From Me ’24 (White Shadow’s HEmix)”

It may not seem like 2009 was all that long ago, but plenty has changed in the 15 intervening years. For starters, LGBTQ+ artists didn’t used to feel comfortable singing using their romantic interests’ pronouns. So, Adam Lambert decided to correct the record with a “HEmix” of his 2009 hit “Whataya Want From Me.” Along with bringing in White Shadow to update his classic power ballad with a crunchy EDM beat, Lambert updates one key lyric — instead of singing that “It messed me up/ Need a second to breathe,” the rock singer now declares that “he messed me up.” It might seem like a small update for 2024, but a two-letter word can make all the difference, as Lambert proves on this thrilling remix.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Love Hate Music Box

Since unveiling their debut album in 2013, Rainbow Kitten Surprise has made a career out of refining their familiar indie rock sound. But 11 years in, the band is ready for something different. Enter Love Hate Music Box, a sprawling 22-track LP that throws the band’s established sound out the window, aiming for bolder, brighter sounds in pop, rock, dance and Americana, all while maintaining some of the sharpest songwriting in the group’s history courtesy of frontperson Ela Melo. For just over an hour, Love Hate Music Box promises to make you feel just about everything — and we can confidently say that it delivers on that promise.

Remi Wolf, “Toro”

Remi Wolf has always excelled at taking hyper-specific, intimate moments and turning them into grade-A pop bangers. “Toro” is no exception to that rule, as Wolf transforms a last-minute, high stakes romantic encounter and turns it into a grooving, deliciously sexy alt-pop jam. With a bass line that refuses to stay still, Wolf lets the audience know exactly what’s up on the instantly-memorable chorus: “We’re waking up the people down the hall/ You’re a bull, and I can’t help but saying ‘Toro, Toro.’”

5 Latina Artists Share How Motherhood Reshapes Their Music

Motherhood can inspire a number of profound changes, not only personally but also artistically. For many singers, becoming mothers affects their creative approaches, priorities and overall messages.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner — the second Sunday of May in the United States and other countries, May 10 in Mexico — new mothers in Latin music enlighten us on how motherhood has inspired their creativity.

(See also our list of “25 Latin Songs to Celebrate Mother’s Day”.)

This year, for example, Kali Uchis released Orquídeas, her fourth studio album. The production pays homage to Colombia’s national flower, which symbolizes beauty and resilience, but is also a celebration of femininity in which the artist shares her reflections as a new mother. Uchis revealed her first pregnancy with longtime partner, rapper Don Toliver, in the music video for her double track “Tu Corazón Es Mío” / “Diosa.”

Another touching story comes from Colombian couple Greeicy and Mike Bahía, who chose the music video for their 2022 single “Att: Amor” as a tender announcement of their impending parenthood. The song’s refrain, “Whenever there’s love, we’ll be witnesses of the most beautiful creation,” resonates with their fans.

Cazzu, another key figure in the contemporary Latin music scene, caused buzz when she announced that she was expecting her partner Christian Nodal’s child. During a concert at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, she dramatically dropped her white coat to show her baby bump, turning her performance into a personal moment.

Below, Kali Uchis, Yuridia, Greeicy and more women in Latin music share how motherhood has expanded and deepened their creative process, in their own words.

Jonathan Shank’s ‘The Jam’ Podcast Connects The Dead to a New Audience: ‘We Live in a Golden Age’

Few Millennials can boast of having seen the late Jerry Garcia live in concert and yet no generation of jam band fans have benefited from the success and fellowship of bands like The Grateful Dead than those born after Garcia’s death in 1995.

“Today we live in a golden age for the jam scene,” said veteran music industry executive, producer and artist manager Jonathan Shank, host of The Jam, a new podcast from Osiris Media exploring the bands, the fans and the jams that make up one of the live music’s most enduring musical legacies.

From Phish and Dead and Company’s successful run of shows at The Sphere in Las Vegas, to the emergence of jam superstar artists like Billy Strings, Goose and even EDM pioneers Odesza as mainstream festival headliners, the music born from artists like the Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers Band, the Meters and Dr. John is more accessible than ever.

Trending on Billboard

Billboard recently caught up with Shank to discuss his long history in the jam scene and hear about his new Osiris Media podcast, which launched in March with interviews from legendary bassist and producer Randy Jackson as well as Relix magazine editor and jam scene scholar Dean Budnick.

Why did you decide to jump into podcasting?

I was inspired by Dan Steinberg and Luke Pierce’s Promoter 101 podcast and the idea of elevating people’s stories in the industry. I wanted to find some untold stories with artists that I love and create a platform to tell those stories in a very organic, free form way, and maybe find a few nuggets that people haven’t heard before.

Besides naming your company after a Grateful Dead album, what are your bona fides in the jam scene?

I’ve managed a few jam bands; first Particle in 2001 and then the Disco Biscuits for quite a little while, who are our guests on the podcast. And then around 2004, I started managing (Grateful Dead percussionist) Mickey Hart, who I met through Irving Azoff and went on to manage Mickey and Bill Kreutzmann in the Rhythm Devils and then later Global Drum Project and the Mickey Hart Band for several years. I love Billy Strings and Goose and I’ve seen The Grateful Dead with Jerry Garcia over 50 times. I still put the Grateful Dead as the benchmark for all live music that I’ve ever experienced.

Where do you see the fingerprints of what the Grateful Dead built in today’s music industry?

The Grateful Dead’s approach to direct to fan marketing through fan club ticketing and community around their live experience is a blueprint for what artists like Beyonce and Taylor Swift are doing today and how they’re connecting with their fans via social media. The Dead were the first to engage fans in a newsletter. They were the first to establish a tape trading practice, which now has really developed into Setlist.net where people go and find sets from different shows. So much of how we think about the connection between artist and fans originates with the Dead.

What does the rise of artists like Billy Strings and Goose say about the longevity of today’s jam band scene?

I think we’re in a new golden era of jam and a lot of that really has to do with the emergence of those two artists — Billy Strings and Goose. They are true headliners that can navigate the mainstream and headline major festivals, like Lollapalooza, that are not just jam centric. They’re the ones who will continue the jam scene into future decades.

Let’s talk about some of the guests you’ve had so far, starting with George Porter from the Meters. What does it say about the jam scene that a New Orleans funk band is part of The Jam podcast?

It’s a great example, actually, of how the jam scene encompasses bluegrass, funk, R& B, and jazz into this large gumbo of influences and different styles of music. George Porter Jr. is somebody who has collaborated with Dr. John, with Robert Palmer and with some of the greatest New Orleans musicians of all time. But he also has collaborated with Widespread Panic and The Grateful Dead. George really has embodied that spirit and does his own Grateful Dead covers now on his set with a cover of “Eyes of the World.”

How do you find guests for your podcast?

I’ve known Robby Krieger since the nineties. I’ve known Randy Jackson for over 10 years. He’s been a great mentor to me. You know, Billy Cobham I worked with in Jazz is Dead. Bill Payne and I have mutual friends. I want to give the people that I’ve crossed paths with over the years a forum to thank them for the part they played in my career path and for inspiring so many others in the music industry.

Who is helping you produce The Jam?

I have great partners on this project. We record the podcast inside the Sony studios and then Osiris handles all of the marketing, editing and distribution. It’s an incredible team. Osiris has a great collection of artists and podcasts that super serve the jam audience. My goal is to feature great artists and some industry folks that have stories to tell and and also some tastemakers and people that you don’t hear from very often and help. I feel very blessed to be highlighting these stories and having conversations with some of the greats in this business.
