Mike Posner Serves Up Invaluable Advice at Second Annual Hollywood & Mind Summit

By his own admission, rapper/songwriter/producer Mike Posner had a “midlife crisis at 22.”  He had signed a major label deal and experienced his first big brush with success with his 2010 top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit “Cooler Than Me.”

A few years later, by the time an EDM remix of his stripped-down “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” earned him a 2017 Grammy nomination for song of the year, Posner was well on his way to feeling disillusioned and depleted by fame.

Posner kept making music, but also took a serious look at the decisions he was making and how they were affecting his physical and mental health. At the closing session for the second annual Hollywood & Mind summit held at UTA in Beverly Hills on Thursday (May 9), moderated by Hollywood & Mind founder Cathy Applefeld Olson, Posner, 36, shared some of the wisdom he’s gained through his career and from that arduous work he’s done on himself, including climbing Mount Everest, walking across America and tangling with a rattlesnake.

The daylong event focused on the intersection of entertainment and mental health, and featured close to 50 speakers, including leading mental health professionals, actors, comedians, athletes and entertainment executives, all of whom have an investment in wellness. Panelists included Couples Therapy star Dr. Orna Guralnik, actor and singer Chyler Leigh, music producer Aaron Pearce, Angel Carter Conrad, actress/producer Soleil Moon Frye, comedians Kevin Fredericks and Carmen Esposito, professional basketball player Imani McGee-Stafford, Indianapolis Colts vice chair/owner Kalen Jackson, Bel Air creator and showrunner Morgan Stevenson Cooper, model Emma Brooks, The NAACP’s Kyle Bowser and actor/singer Kevin Quinn.

Here are six takeaways from Olson’s panel with Posner.

Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ Music Video Reaches 4 Billion YouTube Views

In the 2013 clip, Perry embarks on an animal-filled frolic through the jungle in which the pop star befriends a monkey, showers with the assistance of an elephant, brushes a crocodile’s teeth and “roars” a tiger into submission. “I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter/ Dancing through the fire/ ‘Cause I am a champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar,” she belts in the chorus of her empowering hit.

Upon its release in 2013, the song has been equally successful on the Billboard charts. Released in 2013 as a single from Prism, “Roar” spent two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — a feat Perry has accomplished nine times in her career. Prism, which featured additional hits “Dark Horse” and “Unconditionally,” itself also topped the Billboard 200 albums chart for one week in November 2013.

“I was really inspired by this little six-minute thing by Eckhart Tolle where he speaks about loss,” Perry told Billboard in a cover story at the time, referring to a video from the author of the best-selling self-help book, The Power of Now, as Perry was navigating her divorce from ex-husband Russell Brand. “When you lose something, all your foundations crumble-but that also leaves a big hole that’s open for something great to come through.”

In 2014, “Roar” was nominated for song of the year and best pop solo performance at the Grammy Awards. The song became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2017, making Perry the first artist to have three Diamond-certified singles in the country, following “Firework” and “Dark Horse.”

Ghostface Killah ft. Nas “Scar Tissue,” Dave East “Living Single” & More | Daily Visuals 5.10.24

HipHopWired Featured Video

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Iron Man might have bitten the dust in Avengers: Endgame, but the Hip-Hop culture’s iteration of Tony Starks is alive and well and after more than three decades in the game, Ghostface Killah shows got more than enough life left in his body to continue to churn out darts and laser beams on the track as he’s just dropped his latest album, Set The Tone.

Linking up with another Hip-Hop legend in Nas for the visuals to “Scar Tissue,” Ghost and Nas gives the OG’s something to break their neck to as the two turn a workout gym into a lyricist lounge where they spit the kind of gritty bars that had heads hitting the block with a G-Pack back in the day.

Keeping the vibes in the Big Apple, Dave East pays homage to a popular 90’s sitcom and in his clip to “Living Single,” the Harlem rapper kicks it with two thick young women while checking off the names of the characters from Living Single in his bars. Y’all can have Friends, we loving Living Single round these parts.

Live Nation a Rare Winner as Music Stocks Have Tough Week

Live Nation was the top-performing music stock and one of four stocks in positive territory this week. The concert promoter gained 2.5% to $97.02 while three other concert promotion stocks — Sphere Entertainment Co., Madison Square Garden Entertainment and CTS Eventim — each lost ground.

The Billboard Global Music Index fell 1.9% to 1,788.83 as 16 of its 20 stocks finished the week in negative territory. Music streaming companies Deezer and Anghami were two of the week’s other big winners with gains of 1.0% and 0.9%, respectively. Still, the index has risen 16.6% year to date and 12 of the 20 stocks have posted gains in 2024.

Another notable gainer this week was Believe, which closed Friday at 15.04 euros ($16.21), up 0.3% from the prior week. A closing price of 15.04 euros is above the 15.00 euros offer price by consortium of investors that aims to take Believe private. Some minority shareholders may remain, however, because the consortium, which has lined up 71.92% of share equity, will not implement a squeeze-out and force shareholders representing the remaining 28.08% of share capital to sell.

iHeartMedia shares declined 42.7% to $1.30, leaving the radio broadcaster with a market capitalization of just $194 million. Its shares fell 36.1% on Thursday following its first-quarter earnings release and dropped another 5.8% on Friday.

As streaming has surged in popularity and economic importance, radio companies have struggled to reinvent themselves. In 2021, iHeartMedia shares surpassed $28 after the advertising market recovered from a COVID-19 pandemic-related collapse. But in the subsequent three years, its shares have lost nearly all their value as sluggish radio advertising has overshadowed iHeartMedia’s budding podcast business.

The index didn’t fall further than 1.9% because many of its most valuable companies suffered only minor losses this week. Spotify, the largest contributor to the float-adjusted index, dropped only 0.5% while HYBE, one of the index’s more valuable components, fell just 1.5%.

Those small losses, and Live Nation’s 2.5% gain, helped offset larger losses by some other valuable components of the index. Universal Music Group fell 3.1% to 28.01 euros ($30.22) and Warner Music Group dropped 7.3% to $31.64 following its fiscal second quarter earnings release on ThursdayEvercore and Morgan Stanley both dropped their price targets by $2 on WMG’s stock on Friday. Guggenheim maintain its WMG price target.

While music stocks had a rough week, stocks were broadly up around the world. In the United States, the S&P 500 gained 1.9% to 5,222.68 and the Nasdaq composite improved 1.1% to 16,340.87. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 rose 2.7% to 8,433.76. South Korea’s KOSPI composite index gained 1.9% to 2,727.63. China’s Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.6% to 3,154.55.

‘American Idol’ Renewed for 23rd Season

Another round of singers will get the chance to win big when American Idol returns for a 23rd season.

As announced by ABC on Friday (May 10), the network has officially renewed the long-running singing competition series for yet another cycle, just over a week before the current season’s finale is set to air May 19.

“Keep the stage lights on because #IDOL will be back for another season on ABC and Stream on Hulu,” reads a post on the show’s Instagram account.

The new season will mark Idol‘s 23rd year on the airwaves following its premiere in 2002 (aka the year Kelly Clarkson became its first-ever winner); it will also mark the eighth season of the series on ABC since it was rebooted in 2018 following a two-year hiatus from its original network Fox.

Also renewed by ABC: The Bachelor, Dancing With the Stars, Celebrity Jeopardy!, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, What Would You Do? and Shark Tank.

Trending on Billboard

One question that remains unanswered is who will replace Katy Perry on the judges’ panel. Though Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan will return for season 23 alongside host Ryan Seacrest, the pop star announced in February that she would be exiting Idol after seven seasons on the program to focus on other endeavors.

“I love the show so much,” she told Jimmy Fallon at the time. “But I want to go see the world and maybe bring new music.”

Perry has, however, revealed her first choice for her replacement. “I gotta say Jelly Roll was crazy when he came on the show,” she told E! News in April. “I was convinced at anything he said. He could run for president, he could be my pastor … To have any of these guys plus Jelly on the show would be amazing.”

For the record, the “Son of a Sinner” singer is totally down. “Of course!” he said when asked at Stagecoach whether he’d consider the gig. “Consider? I’ve accepted the job and they haven’t offered it.”

How One Fan Brought Luxembourg Back to Eurovision After a 31-Year Gap

Eric Lehman from Luxembourg started out as a Eurovision fan, attending his first contest in Birmingham, England, in 1998 after Katrina & the Waves claimed victory in 1997 with “Love Shine a Light.” Eventually, Lehman became a journalist, reporting for various outlets in his home country, even though the Grand Duchy dropped out of the contest in 1994.

Nine years later, when the song contest was held in Riga, Latvia, Lehman stayed an extra day.

“I invited a close friend of mine to come over to my hotel room to have coffee. We discussed the possible return of Luxembourg. At that point, we had not participated for 10 years. My friend said, ‘Why don’t you try to reach out to let them know what the benefits are, of coming back and participating in the Eurovision Song Contest? You are well equipped with all your Eurovision knowledge, and you have all these contacts. Why don’t you reach out and tell them if they need a head of delegation, you are the perfect choice.’ I was very reluctant because I thought I would be too young for this. He said, ‘No, just go and suggest it.’”

Fast forward to 2024. Lehman’s accreditation badge lists his name and title: head of delegation.

Trending on Billboard

There are not a lot of things fans of the Eurovision Song Contest hate about the long-running, pan-European competition – but one of them is when countries drop out. But as much as they dislike when that happens, they love it when they return.

The small European nation was there at the very beginning of Eurovision in 1956, one of seven countries in that inaugural broadcast. Luxembourg consistently returned to the contest every year through 1993, only missing 1959.

Things went south in 1994. Seven new countries were admitted, bringing the total number of entrants who wanted to take part to 32, too many for one broadcast. A relegation system was implemented and the six lowest scoring countries in the 1993 contest were out. Goodbye Belgium, Israel, Denmark, Slovenia, Turkey and Luxembourg. Italy voluntarily withdrew.

All of those nations did return, sooner or later. But not Luxembourg – until now.

Eric Lehman was 10 years old in 1988. “I watched Eurovision with my family,” he tells Billboard. “My father was working for RTL, the national broadcaster in Luxembourg, and he had worked on the 1984 contest, the last time Luxembourg hosted [after a 1983 win with “Si La Vie Est Cadeau” by Corinne Hermès]. As a kid, I was allowed to stay awake until very late in the night because the show would end at midnight CET. We were represented in 1988 by Lara Fabian, who went on to become a big star. It was the same year that Celine Dion sang for Switzerland. Lara was in the lead, so I was really enthusiastic. I thought we might win. I like geography and hearing different languages and I enjoy music and TV production, so Eurovision was giving me everything I wanted.”

In 1998, with access to the Internet to purchase a ticket, Lehman traveled to Birmingham by himself to be in the audience for the first time. “I met so many people and became a member of the local fan club and went on to be president in 2000. There are 42 branches today.”

Lehman’s next step was to cover Eurovision for Luxembourg media, including RTL, Radio Luxembourg and local newspapers. Then he became a member of various delegations over the years, including Lithuania, Turkey and France. He also returned as a journalist for Luxembourg television.

All this time, Lehman was determined to bring Luxembourg back into the Eurovision fold. “I fought very hard. I wanted to be the face of Eurovision in Luxembourg. I staged annual charity fundraisers for Televie, a TV marathon that collects funds to fight against cancer and leukemia. They were all Eurovision-themed, which is how we made Eurovision popular again at home.”

Lehman was at the contest in Turin (2022) and Liverpool (2023) and did “massive coverage” for RTL. “I started a big campaign with our previous prime minister, Xavier Bettel.” Lehman and Bettel were granted a one-hour meeting with RTL CEO Christophe Goossens.

“It took me three weeks to prepare this presentation. I got in touch with 14 heads of delegation, EBU staff and former contest producers, to find all the information we would need in order to know what it takes to join Eurovision and what the costs are.”

Lehman, who says he doesn’t even sweat at the gym, could feel drops of water running down his spine during the presentation. “I knew that this was the moment. If we didn’t convince them now, we never would. We explained what the benefits are, that Eurovision has a large audience, especially young people 15 to 29. That is very interesting for them. And it’s not about the three minutes on stage. It’s a good thing for the entire country – nation branding, creating new music, promoting and showcasing new local talents and allowing a team of singers and composers to work with foreign composers and record labels. It’s a way to expand your music industry to the rest of the world.”

Not long after, Lehman got a call from RTL asking if he would he take on the job of head of delegation for Luxembourg’s return to Eurovision.

Thus began a search for candidates to represent the country after a 31-year gap. “We proceeded to the selection process with a nationally televised contest. We received over 500 entries. From that field, we selected 70 songs to audition. And from those 70, we chose eight singers to compete in a national final.”

One of those eight performers was Tali, an Israeli-born singer who had been living in Luxembourg. She was in New York studying theater when Lehman called and asked if she would consider representing Luxembourg in Eurovision.

And what of the friend who told Lehman he should pursue his dream all those years ago?

“Last year when I was appointed HOD, I knew I needed to find him. We had not been in touch for years because he stopped coming to Eurovision in 2007. I didn’t have his phone number or email address. I checked Facebook and other social media and couldn’t find him. Then I traveled to Malmö. I was in the lobby of the official delegation hotel on the day of the opening ceremony and I saw him after 17 years. I got up and I said, ‘Do you remember me? I’m Eric from Luxembourg.’ He immediately recognized me and we talked for a while and later at dinner I showed him my badge and said, ‘Remember what we said back then in 2003 in the hotel room?’ He started crying and I told him, ‘I was looking for you because I wanted to tell you that your idea and my dream have come true. I have become head of delegation of Luxembourg and I brought the country back.’ Can you imagine? Twenty-one years later, it happened. It’s quite a coincidence because he hadn’t attended the contest for 17 years. And just when I was thinking about him, there he was.”

Tali will sing “Fighter” for Luxembourg in the grand final of the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest. She is fourth in the running order. Viewers in the U.S. can watch the four-hour live broadcast on Saturday, May 11 at 3 p.m. ET.

Caffeine Eye Cream Is Going Viral (And TikTok’s Favorite Brand Is Only $11)

Caffeine eye creams are the latest skincare trend to have taken over TikTok, with more than 91 million videos posted about the skincare product to date. While many affordable eye creams claim to leave a smoother appearance behind, TikTokers are praising The INKEY List’s caffeine eye cream not only for its effective formula, but its wallet-friendly price of just $11 — making it arguably one of the best beauty deals out there.

What differentiates a caffeine eye cream from the rest is exactly what the name suggests: it uses caffeine. When you apply the ingredient to your skin though, caffeine will not only help wake you up ( by decreasing the appearance of dark circles), but also help reduce eye puffiness as well. This occurs as the ingredient narrows blood vessels and ultimately calms your skin, according to Dermstore.

Trending on Billboard

The INKEY List’s caffeine eye cream has generated a cult following with one bought every 30 seconds globally, according to the brand. The brand even praised how it’s been used by Alana Haim, which she showed off during a 2023 nighttime routine video for Harper’s Bazaar. Amazon shoppers also can’t get enough of its “smooth application” that also “is quickly absorbed by the skin,” per reviewers.

You can buy the caffeine eye cream online below or find it on Amazon, Sephora and TheINKEYList.com.

For the best results, the brand suggests patting a small amount of the caffeine eye cream around the contour shape of your eye using your index or pinky finger. Make sure it’s evenly distributed and absorbed around the eye area, then follow up with your moisturizer and makeup as usual. Per INKEY List, you can use it morning and night or as much as needed until your desired results are achieved. Amazon reviewers also claim that one tube can last you a few months.

Aamna Adel a dermatologist at the National Health Service hospital in London, U.K., even posted a TikTok describing the benefits of a caffeine eye cream and even recommending The INKEY List’s cream.

“The best results are seen with consistent use,” she says in the video, which has generated more than 43,000 likes.

Along with The INKEY List’s eye cream, the dermatologist also recommended L’Oreal Paris’ Revitalift Eye Serum and The Ordinary’s Caffeine Solution, as good caffeine eye creams, which you can shop below.

More than 6,000 Amazon shoppers have purchased this caffeine eye solution in the last month making it a must-have for your skincare routine. The formula incorporates 5% of a highly-purified EGCG from green tea leaves to help give your under eyes an almost instant boost while also reducing dark circles. We’ve been using this for months and love how lightweight the formula is and how easily it absorbs into our skin. The cute packaging is great for a bathroom #shelfie as well.

Does Caffeine Eye Cream Really Work?

As Adel describes in the TikTok, the results are temporary but you will see them if you keep up with application. Since the caffeine within the formula contains anti-inflammatory properities, this will not only help soothe the under eye area, but also aim to reduce the look of redness, brown spots and dark circles. It can be used day and night or you can just use it in the morning to give your eyes a boost.

Is Caffeine Bad for the Under Eyes?

Caffeine eye creams can actually be beneficial for your under eyes depending on what you’re looking to achieve. Since the ingredient helps shrink the size of red blood vessels, this will help minimize color pigmentation as well as soothe your under eye area for a smoother and more awake appearance.

Brent Fedrizzi Named President of AEG Presents, North American Regional Offices

AEG Presents, a global leader in live music and events, announced Friday (May 10) that Brent Fedrizzi, who currently serves as co-president and COO of AEG Presents’ Rocky Mountains and Pacific Northwest regions, has been named president, North American regional offices.

Fedrizzi’s promotion follows Rick Mueller’s exit from the company, which the former AEG Presents president for North America announced earlier this week.

Fedrizzi, who will continue to be based out of Denver, is set to guide the company’s 100 U.S. venues – including the 50 owned and operated clubs and theaters in the AEG Presents portfolio – in all aspects of talent buying and promotion, as well as overseeing its 12 regional offices. He will report to AEG Presents chairman and CEO Jay Marciano and will join the company’s executive committee.

“I’ve known Brent for close to 30 years and have worked with him almost as long, so it’s especially gratifying to make this announcement,” said Marciano in a release. “He has a vision, a drive, and an insight into our business that’s been forged over his many years promoting events in every type of venue across the western United States. As co-president of our Rocky Mountain region, his feel for the business is a key reason AEG Presents is the dominant promoter in the market and the Denver office is one of our top performers. Simply put, he’s the right person for the job.”

“When Jay and I first spoke about this opportunity, I jumped at the chance to work more closely with him, the regional team, and the company as a whole,” Fedrizzi said. “I’m excited for the challenge ahead, and I can’t wait to dive in; there’s never been a more exhilarating time in live events. I’m grateful for the trust Jay has put in me to guide the business into the future; the ability to do so with the people and the company I love is icing on the cake.”

A Colorado native, Fedrizzi began his career in 1991 at the Fey Concert Company in Denver, booking artists at various venues across the Rockies and the Southwest. In 1998, he joined forces with Chuck Morris and Don Strasburg to launch Bill Graham Presents/Chuck Morris Presents in the market. Through a series of acquisitions including SFX and Clear Channel Entertainment, that company would eventually become Live Nation in 2005. Fedrizzi remained there for nine years before leaving with Morris and Strasburg to join AEG Live as COO of the Rocky Mountain region. They quickly established themselves as the dominant force in one of the most competitive and active live music markets in the country and now promote more than 1,100 events annually at a variety of venues including Mission Ballroom, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Fiddlers Green Amphitheatre and Ball Arena, among many others.

In addition to his work at AEG Presents, Fedrizzi is a board member and four-time president of the North American Concert Promoters Association, a four-time Academy of Country Music award nominee, and a nominee for International Entertainment Buyers Association’s promoter of the year. He currently serves as chairman of the board for Visit Denver and sits on the board of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.
