Travis, Chris Martin & Brandon Flowers Pour One Out for a Shuttered East Village Pub on ‘Raze the Bar’

Complaining about change in New York City is about as useful as moaning about rats on the subway tracks, but everyone – natives, adopted locals, frequent visitors – does it. And there’s a good reason why: It hurts to see a beloved haunt shutter for good.

The pandemic wiped out plenty of storied Manhattan bars and restaurants, among them the East Village bar Black and White. With low ceilings, red-and-orange-striped walls, dark lighting and reliably great music (everything from Southern soul to British post-punk was spun on vinyl), Black and White occupied that necessary space between low-key and high-octane, making it suitable for everything from post-work happy hour to first dates to nightcaps after a concert.

It was effortlessly cool yet unpretentious, and you didn’t need to be a New Yorker to love it – case in point, Travis’ new song “Raze the Bar.” The cleverly titled single finds the Scottish rockers melding the elegiac with the anthemic to pay homage to the defunct bar, its owners and staff – with guest vocalists Chris Martin of Coldplay and Brandon Flowers of The Killers stopping by for a shot (at the mic).

Trending on Billboard

“If you played a show at Irving Plaza or Webster Hall, chances are you ended up at Black and White till the wee small hours,” explained frontman Fran Healy in a statement. “’Raze the Bar’ is a song about a fictional last night in the bar. [Co-owner] Johnny is in there, Jack, Richard and Johnny’s brother and bar co-owner Chris. The cameos were almost an afterthought! I just called Chris Martin in a bit of a panic because I couldn’t figure out what the track sequence should be. When Chris heard it, he was like, ‘That song is the best thing you’ve ever written!’ And because he and Brandon Flowers both live quite near…”

The track will feature on the band’s upcoming album L.A. Times, out July 12.

Black and White doesn’t just hold a special place in Healy’s heart – it occupies a spot in Billboard lore as well. Many a Billboard staffer (and alumni) gathered at the bar to celebrate, commiserate, come up with ideas and vent while draining the bar of Prosecco and Goose Island.

With “Raze the Bar,” Travis has delivered a rousing round of nostalgia to pour one out for an East Village mainstay.

In the clip, the eight-piece group goes through an intense journey individually, before they meet up for a passionate dance sequence. “I lose my breath when you’re walkin’ in/ ‘Cause when our eyes lock, it’s like my heart stops/ I lose my breath when you’re walkin’ in/ You make my knees drop, it’s like I’m in shock,” Puth and Stray Kids muse in the chorus.

In addition to studio edition of “Lose My Breath,” the new digital single includes an instrumental version of the track. The Puth and Johnny Goldstein-produced “Lose My Breath” was written and composed by the group’s in-house production team 3RACHA (Bang Chan, Changbin, and HAN) and Puth.

Earlier this month, Stray Kids made Gold House’s annual A100 list, honoring the 100 Asian Pacific leaders who have most significantly impacted American culture and society in the last year. “This year was special: Asian Pacific leaders had a record number of records broken while building a more inclusive tomorrow for all, particularly in new avenues like AI. Gold House is honored to celebrate so many new and established leaders who are committed to both equity and excellence,” said Bing Chen and Jeremy Tran, CEO and COO of Gold House of this year’s honorees.

The group also made their debut at the Met Gala on May 6, attending the event alongside Tommy Hilfiger in custom suiting by the designer.

Kesha Says She’s Permanently Changing Diddy Lyric in ‘Tik Tok’: ‘I Know What I Stand For’

Kesha is never going back after changing a key lyric in “TikTok” at Coachella.

After altering the song during Reneé Rapp’s festival set in April to include the line “f— P. Diddy” — in light of accusations of sexual misconduct against the rapper and mogul — Kesha revealed Thursday that she’s only planning to sing the updated version of her 2009 smash going forward.

When asked by TMZ at the Los Angeles International Airport whether she would be permanently implementing the “F— P. Diddy” lyric — as opposed to the track’s original phrase, “Wake up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy” — Kesha immediately said yes.

“Yes, it will be [permanent],” she replied. “The fans should learn it for my upcoming [shows]. I want to hear it louder than ever. I stand by that.

“I’m not the kind of person that shuts the f— up,” the California native continued. “I know what I stand for, I know my integrity is rock-solid, so I speak the truth. The industry can kinda, like, suck my di–.”

Trending on Billboard

When Kesha joined Rapp on the Coachella stage for a surprise duet of “Tik Tok” last month, it had been just a couple of weeks since Diddy’s L.A. and Miami homes were raided by FBI agents in connection with an ongoing federal sex trafficking investigation, as reported at the time by CNN. The Bad Boy Records founder also faces abuse allegations and a litany of sexual-misconduct-related lawsuits.

During their performance, both Kesha and Rapp held up middle fingers while belting out the “F— P. Diddy” line. Shortly afterward, Kesha doubled down by tweeting, “WAKE UP IN THE MORNING LIKE F— P DIDDY” in all caps.

The musician is currently gearing up to headline WeHo Pride in Los Angeles, which will also feature Adam Lambert, Monét X Change, Laganja Estranja, Morphine Love Dion, Niña Dioz, Jessica Betts, Owenn and Venessa Michaels on the lineup. Her latest album, 2023’s Gag Order, which peaked at No. 14 on the Top Alternative Albums chart.

Jordan Davis’ ‘Tucson Too Late’ Travels to No. 1 on Country Airplay Chart

Jordan Davis rolls up his fifth leader on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart as “Tucson Too Late” ascends to No. 1 on the survey dated May 18. It increased by 14% to 30.5 million in audience May 3-9, according to Luminate.

The song was co-authored by two pairs of brothers: Jordan and Jacob Davis and Josh and Matt Jenkins. It’s from Jordan Davis’ Bluebird Days, which arrived at its No. 3 peak on Top Country Albums in March 2023, becoming his second and top-charting top 10. His rookie LP, Home State, entered at its No. 6 peak in April 2018.

The 36-year-old from Shreveport, La., previously led Country Airplay with “What My World Spins Around,” for two frames in January 2023; “Buy Dirt” (featuring Luke Bryan; two weeks beginning in January 2022); “Slow Dance in a Parking Lot” (one week, April 2020); and his debut hit “Singles You Up” (one, April 2018).

New ‘Country’ Top 10

Jason Aldean banks his 38th Country Airplay top 10 as “Let Your Boys Be Country” bumps 12-10 (16 million, up 6%). It follows “Try That in a Small Town,” which reached No. 2 in October 2023 and became his 10th No. 1 on the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart and his first on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

Aldean claims the eighth-most top 10s since Country Airplay launched in January 1990. Kenny Chesney and George Strait lead with 61 each, followed by Tim McGraw (60), Alan Jackson (51), Keith Urban (44), Toby Keith (42) and Brooks & Dunn (41). Aldean breaks out of a tie with Reba McEntire, who leads all women with 37 top 10s.

Post Malone, Wallen Lead Debuts

Post Malone and Morgan Wallen’s “I Had Some Help” makes the highest debut on Country Airplay, at No. 18 with 10.4 million audience impressions from its first day of availability. The song was released to country radio May 9 and received hourly plays on participating iHeartMedia stations. It’s Post Malone’s first Country Airplay entry as a lead act, and second overall, after late hitmaker Joe Diffie’s “Pickup Man,” on which he’s featured, hit No. 44 in January. (Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone, has topped the Hot 100 for two weeks running, having become his fifth No. 1.)

Marshmello hits Country Airplay for the first time, via his new collaboration with Kane Brown, “Miles on It,” which opens at No. 30 (4.7 million). They previously combined for “One Right Thing,” which led the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart for a week in 2019.

Miranda Lambert’s new single “Wranglers” opens at No. 37 on Country Airplay (3.6 million). Lambert, who has achieved seven No. 1s among 15 top 10s, spent her entire career with Sony Music Nashville before signing with Republic Records in April in a partnership with Big Loud, which will promote her music to country radio.

Also on Country Airplay, legend Randy Travis makes his first appearance in 15 years. Travis, who boasts 16 No. 1s among 30 top 10s on Hot Country Songs, arrives at No. 45 with “Where That Came From” (2.1 million). He last hit Country Airplay as featured on Carrie Underwood’s “I Told You So,” which rose to No. 2 in 2009; his original solo version topped Hot Country Songs in 1987.

Travis’ new single was crafted with through the use of AI. Said the 64-year-old, who suffered a stroke in 2013, in a statement, “By God’s grace and the support of family, friends, fellow artists and fans, I’m able to create the music I so dearly love. Many thanks to my wonderful team and the best fans in the world for putting me back in the saddle again! I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.”

Black Thought Calls J. Cole’s Apology to Kendrick Lamar ‘A Beautiful Thing’

The Roots frontman Black Thought appeared on the This Week In White Supremacy podcast and was asked about J. Cole’s infamous apology to Kendrick Lamar by host Jasiri X. Interestingly enough, the emcee had no issues with Cole taking that route and actually applauded his decision.

The Philly rapper, who’s also an adjunct instructor at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, mentioned his students asking him what he thought about the apology. “Some of my students at NYU asked me a week ago asked me how I feel about J. Cole’s apology to Kendrick a day or so after putting out a diss record,” he said. “Though I hadn’t heard any of the music, I thought it was a beautiful thing. I thought that’s what’s unprecedented.”

Trending on Billboard

He continued by bringing up rap’s violent history when it comes to beef, saying, “What we’ve seen, time and time again since the ’80s, are MCs going back and forth, like battling out. Sometimes they keep it to the records, sometimes it gets physical and it gets crazy.”

So, he applauded Cole for looking at the bigger picture. “What we’ve yet to see is somebody nip that in the bud, right? That’s what I felt like he was in effect doing. I felt like it just showed humility, nobility and a sense of elevation that you don’t see too often across the board.” He then added, “When the plane’s going down, you gotta situate your own oxygen mask first. He’s been on a trajectory of just that, self-revelation, and investing in himself. His mind, spirit, body, soul, music, everything is better for it.”

Thought admitted he doesn’t know the Carolina rapper very well personally, but is familiar with his music and revealed that back in 2018 they almost did a joint album together. However, he feels like he might’ve scared Cole away. “He sent me a batch of beats and they all just felt so close to, I guess, something Roots-centric. At the time, I was trying to sort of step outside of what I’d done with The Roots and I just didn’t feel like we were lining up.” He then asked Cole for a different pack of beats adding, “So I think I asked him to do a different batch. I gave him an explanation, and in my explanation I think I scared him off. Maybe some of the trigger words that I was using, like, ‘I want something hard! This beat ain’t aggressive enough. He wasn’t on that. He was on a peaceful journey.”

Friday Dance Music Guide: The Week’s Best New Tracks From TroyBoi, TEED & Anna Lunoe, Alesso & More

And of course, these are the best new dance tracks of the week.

Trending on Billboard

TroyBoi, “Híbrido”

London’s TroyBoi has always been especially adept at fusing harder bass with the softer, more sensual side of low end, with that latter element arguably never stronger in his catalog than on his latest, “Híbrido.” Made for that cool down part of the night, the track brings together a hypnotic vocal sample, a sultry melody, spare, crisp percussion and a restrained, mature build and release. The track follows TroyBoi’s Coachella 2024 set at the Do Lab stage and comes from his 4 on the Floor EP coming in June.

“I love to combine different genres together into my work,” the producer born Troy Henry says. “After completing the song, I listened to it and realized I fused elements of baile funk, house, U.K. garage, R&B and funk all together. It truly sounded like a hybrid track and that’s how I came up with the name ‘Híbrido’.” Henry’s other summer dates include EDC Las Vegas, HARD Summer and Ubbi Dubbi.

Anna Lunoe & Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, “Right Here”

Two of the scene’s most cerebral producers unite for a predictably excellent house production, “Right Here.” Out through Nina Las Vegas’ NLV Records, the track is pure uplift, winding to a place of blissful abandon but maintaining heft and power through it’s acid-influenced bass and percussion. The track comes ten years after the duo’s first collaboration, “Feels Like,” with Lunoe calling this new one “a sassy anthem to remind you who the main character is in your life… (you!)”

Alesso, Hypnotize

https://youtube.com/watch?v=O0NH70OhUto&version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-US&autohide=2&wmode=transparent

You might call remixing Corona’s “The Rhythm of the Night” (which celebrates its 30-year anniversary this year), messing with perfection. But Alesso makes it work. His take on the classic turns up the gothic drama dial with a very Hans Zimmer Interstellar-style intro, before transitioning into a full on deep house production that still maintains the size and grandiosity that’s defined so much of the producer’s work over the last 10-plus years. “The Rhythm of the Night” comes from Alesso’s new three-track Hypnotize EP, with this project officially marking his transition into club-focused productions coming via his new label, Body Hi.

DJ Seinfeld, “If U Like Me”

Coming off a pair of sets at Coachella last month, Sweden’s DJ Seinfeld drops his first new solo music since 2022 with “If U Like Me.” Out via Ninja Tune, the track is a 2-step club song that balances lyrics about club-style love (“yeah I can’t wait to find out if I’m leaving with you”) with a dash of woozy, minor key melancholy. Seinfeld upcoming dates include a flurry of European festivals and DC10 in Ibiza on May 20.

Hot Since 82 feat. Ron Carroll, “Preach”

While Hot Since 82 hit a very rough patch last week with the aforementioned situation in Rio de Janeiro where he was pursued by a car full of gunmen, this week ends on a much brighter note with the release of “Preach.” Out as part of Defected Records’ Together series — which pairs talent from the past and present of the U.K. label — this song finds the English artist working with Chicago legend Ron Carroll on a soulful, slow-burn, big-build, huge-payoff house production. The track features a vocal sample from power-lunged Chicago house singer Shawn Christopher, who wails (quite appropriately in this case) that while everything in life has its ups downs “if you turn to the music, everything is going to be alright.”
