Taylor Swift’s Music Tops Billboard Classical Charts Thanks to Vitamin String Quartet

The music of Taylor Swift rules Billboard’s main classical chart, as Vitamin String Quartet’s VSQ Performs Taylor Swift opens atop the Classical Albums survey dated May 18.

The 16-song set, originally released in February, enters atop the chart with 3,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. May 3-9, according to Luminate. Of that sum, nearly all is from vinyl sales, following the collection’s release on the format. The LP also opens at No. 15 on the Vinyl Albums chart.

VSQ Performs Taylor Swift encompasses Swift’s catalog from her 2008 album Fearless through 2022’s Midnights; a makeover of the latter’s “Anti-Hero” is the first track on the new release, while fellow Midnights reinterpretation “Snow on the Beach” is also among the tracklist.

Trending on Billboard

Vitamin String Quartet achieves its first No. 1 on Classical Albums, among 10 entries. Here’s a recap of the act’s titles to have made the tally, spotlighting the group’s takes on songs by other high-profile pop stars (including Swift’s “Snow on the Beach” collaborator Lana Del Rey).

Peak Pos., Date, Title

  • No. 8, August 2010, VSQ Performs Lady Gaga
  • No. 10, May 2014, Vitamin String Quartet Performs Weezer’s Pinkerton
  • No. 4, May 2016, Daft Punk’s Random Access Memory
  • No. 10, May 2017, VSQ Performs Kanye West
  • No. 13, December 2017, The World of Studio Ghibli
  • No. 7, April 2019, VSQ Performs Bjork

  • No. 8, May 2023, Ghost: VSQ Performs Death Cab for Cutie
  • No. 1 (one week to date), May 2024, VSQ Performs Taylor Swift

VSQ Performs Taylor Swift concurrently becomes Vitamin String Quartet’s first No. 1 on the Classical Crossover Albums chart and the (recently expanded) Indie Store Album Sales ranking.

On May 13, Vitamin String Quartet, whose origins date to the late 1990s, announced its latest tour, a 43-date trek set to start Oct. 22 in Joliet, Ill., and run through Feb. 16, 2025, in Nashville.

Kendrick Lamar Gets a Meal Named After Him at Toronto Restaurant He References on ‘Euphoria’

Business is boomin’ for New Ho King. The Chinese restaurant referenced by Kendrick Lamar on “Euphoria” is looking to capitalize on the spotlight by naming a special meal after K. Dot.

Last week, food blogger @insta.noodls pulled up to New Ho King in Toronto to order the “Kendrick Lamar Special” and tried out the fried rice with the dip sauce for himself that the Compton rapper rhymed about on “Euphoria.”

In addition to the late-night grub spot in the 6’s signature fried rice, he’s also served spicy fried chicken wings, fried shrimp, and a beef and broccoli dish. The price of the four-plate meal? $66 before tax and tip.

Trending on Billboard

The restaurant has reportedly seen a surge in orders since Lamar rapped on the bristling Drake diss track: “I be at New Ho King eatin’ fried rice with a dip sauce and a blammy, crodie.”

A server from the eatery relayed to The Guardian: “We’ve been selling a lot of fried rice. A lot. Most people come here to order it.”

While New Ho King lies in the Downtown district of Drake’s hometown, the owners are appreciative of the new business thanks to Lamar’s name-drop.

“I see, Kendrick’s a good guy. Oh my God!” New Ho King owner Johnny Lu told CityNews.

Fans are coming from all over Canada to give New Ho King a try as its become a city attraction. “I came all the way from Markham just to see this fried rice,” one fan said. “Kendrick Lamar, man. You gotta pay respect to K. Dot, man. Ever since he dropped the diss track I was like, ‘I gotta visit this place.’”

“Euphoria” shot up to No. 3 on the latest Billboard Hot 100 in its first full week of tracking following a debut at No. 11. It was an animosity-filled Hot 100 top 10 with K. Dot’s Mustard-produced “Not Like Us” debuting atop the chart, while Drake’s “Family Matters” response slotted in at No. 7.

Watch fans make the trip to New Ho King and try the Kendrick Lamar Special below.

ACM Awards 2024 Predictions: Who Will Take Home the Top Honors?

Who will be the big winner at the 59th Academy of Country Music Awards on Thursday (May 16) night?

Luke Combs, who is hoping to land his first entertainer of the year win in his fifth nomination, leads all artists with eight nods. Should he take home entertainer of the year, he will clinch the ACMs Awards’ Triple Crown — bestowed upon acts who have also taken home the trophy for new artist and artist of the year in their eligible categories.

He is followed by Megan Moroney, who is the leading female nominee, and reigning male artist of the year Morgan Wallen, both of whom nabbed six nods. Cody Johnson, reigning entertainer of the year Chris Stapleton and Lainey Wilson each garnered five nominations. Wilson was last year’s big winner, along with HARDY, taking home four trophies.

Jelly Roll is up for four nominations. He is the first artist since Billy Ray Cyrus 32 years ago to be nominated for entertainer of the year in his first year of receiving any nominations. He is joined by Jordan Davis, who also received four nominations. Kelsea Ballerini and Zach Bryan garnered three nods each.

Tracy Chapman receives her first ACM nomination as writer of song of the year nominee, “Fast Car.”

Returning for a record 17th time, Reba McEntire will host the show, which will stream for free live on Prime Video across more than 240 countries and territories from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas starting at 8 p.m. EDT/7 p.m. CDT and 5 p.m. PDT. The 16-time ACM Award winner will also perform.  The eligibility period for nominations runs Jan. 1, 2023-Dec. 31, 2023.

Below, Billboard’s Melinda Newman and Jessica Nicholson select their picks to take home the trophy.

Entertainer of the Year

Kane Brown

Luke Combs

Jelly Roll

Cody Johnson

Chris Stapleton

Morgan Wallen

Lainey Wilson

Newman: Stapleton is the reigning champ, but even he seemed surprised when he won last year. In his fifth try, Combs is more than deserving of his first win, but faces very stiff competition from the other contenders, especially Wallen and Jelly Roll. Plus, after being the surprise winner at the CMA Awards, it’s foolish to rule out Wilson. Winner: Wallen

Nicholson: Each contender in this category has had a solid year including chart-topping singles, sold-out arena or stadium shows, and/or an array of high-profile media appearances. Having released his album Higher in November and continued his All-American Road Show tour, Stapleton could repeat last year’s entertainer win. However, Combs has been spearheading his slate of stadium concerts and several international stops, and had one of the songs of the summer with “Fast Car.” Winner: Combs

Female Artist of the Year

Kelsea Ballerini

Ashley McBryde

Megan Moroney

Kacey Musgraves

Lainey Wilson

Newman: All these deserving women had stellar years, including Moroney, who is the rookie of the bunch, but Wilson, who took home the award last year, continues her meteoric rise and seems unstoppable. Winner: Wilson

Nicholson: Each artist here has released a stellar slate of music over the past year, including Ballerini’s post-divorce album Rolling Up the Welcome Mat and Moroney’s debut album Lucky. But Wilson’s rocketship-like career surge doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. Winner: Wilson

Male Artist of the Year

Luke Combs

Jelly Roll

Cody Johnson

Chris Stapleton

Morgan Wallen

Newman: Wallen is the reigning champ and he could end up repeating, especially given the success of “Last Night,” which spent eight weeks atop the Country Airplay chart. Combs and Stapleton have also both prevailed before. But Jelly Roll has had an undeniable year. Winner: Jelly Roll

Nicholson: Combs and Wallen each scored major crossover hits over the past year, with Combs’s cover of “Fast Car” and Wallen’s “Last Night” each notching lengthy stays in the upper echelon of the Hot 100. Johnson had a solid year and just earned another chart-topper with “The Painter,” while three-time ACM male artist of the year winner Stapleton should never be counted out as a serious awards contender. Still, Jelly Roll notched three No. 1 Country Airplay hits last year, including the four-week chart-topper “Need a Favor,” while leading a headlining tour and becoming a seemingly ubiquitous media presence over the past year. Winner: Jelly Roll

Duo of the Year

Brooks & Dunn

Brothers Osborne

Dan + Shay

Maddie & Tae

The War and Treaty

Newman: Dan + Shay and Brothers Osborne have traded off winning this award for the last several years and there’s no reason to think they’d stop now, despite the warranted rising acclaim for The War & Treaty, who continue to build their following. The slight edge goes to Dan + Shay, who rose back to the top of the charts with “Save Me the Trouble,” headlined a sold-out arena tour and joined The Voice. Winner: Dan + Shay

Nicholson: Since 2017, Brothers Osborne has taken home the gold here four times, while Dan+Shay have thrice earned the trophy in this category. While The War and Treaty saw their career continue to rise over the past year thanks to high-profile performances and their collaboration with Zach Bryan on “Hey Driver,” look for Dan+Shay to take the lead here. Dan +Shay nearly broke up, only to experience a career renaissance by earning a couple of top 5 Country Airplay hits over the past year and expanding their audience through their work on The Voice. Winner: Dan+Shay

Group of the Year

Flatland Cavalry

Lady A

Little Big Town

Old Dominion

Zac Brown Band

Newman: In an era where labels are more focused on developing solo artists than groups, Old Dominion is going for its seventh group of the year trophy, and there’s no reason to believe they won’t succeed as they continue their deserved dominance in this category.  Winner: Old Dominion

Nicholson: Coming off of the success of their 2023 album Memory Lane, with the title track and their Megan Moroney collaboration “Can’t Break Up Now” both heating up Country Airplay chart over the past year, the group seems poised to once again take home the trophy here. However, it is nice to see some newcomers represented in the category, with the inclusion of Texas group Flatland Cavalry. Winner: Old Dominion

Album of the Year

[Awarded to Artist(s)/Producer(s)/Record Company–Label(s)]

Gettin’ Old– Luke Combs; Producer: Chip Matthews, Jonathan Singleton, Luke Combs; Record Company-Label: River House Artists / Columbia Nashville

Higher– Chris Stapleton; Producer: Chris Stapleton, Dave Cobb, Morgane Stapleton; Record Company-Label: Mercury Nashville

Leather – Cody Johnson; Producers: Trent Willmon; Record Company-Label: CoJo Music LLC / Warner Music Nashville LLC

One Thing at a Time– Morgan Wallen; Producers: Joey Moi, Cameron Montgomery, Charlie Handsome, Jacob Durrett; Record Company-Label: Big Loud Records / Republic Records / Mercury Records

Rolling Up the Welcome Mat (For Good)– Kelsea Ballerini; Producers: Kelsea Ballerini, Alysa Vanderheym; Record Company-Label: Black River Entertainment

Newman: Five very worthy entries, all showcasing artists at different stages in their careers. Stapleton tends to be a lock in this category for good reason, and can never be discounted. But this year Wallen has the tailwind, given One Thing at a Time’s record-breaking status as the country album with the most weeks spent at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200, its singles’ dominance at radio and the lift the set has given country music — in addition to being chock-full of catchy songs.  Winner: One Thing at a Time

Nicholson: Each finalist here issued an award-worthy project. In terms of pure consumption and fan devotion, Wallen’s presence in this category with One Thing at a Time is undeniable, though some ACM Awards voters could be turned off due to some of Wallen’s recent non-musical activities. Ballerini, Johnson and Combs have also put out some of the strongest projects of their careers, while Stapleton is deservedly a mainstay in this category. Winner: Higher

Single of the Year

[Awarded to Artist(s)/Producer(s)/Record Company–Label(s)]

“Burn It Down” – Parker McCollum; Producer: Jon Randall; Record Company-Label: MCA Nashville

“Fast Car” – Luke Combs; Producers: Luke Combs, Chip Matthews, Jonathan Singleton; Record Company-Label: River House Artists / Columbia Nashville

“Last Night” – Morgan Wallen; Producer: Joey Moi, Charlie Handsome; Record Company-Label: Big Loud Records / Republic Records / Mercury Records

“Need a Favor” – Jelly Roll; Producer: Austin Nivarel; Record Company-Label: Stoney Creek Records / BMG Nashville

“Next Thing You Know” – Jordan Davis; Producer: Paul DiGiovanni; Record Company-Label: MCA Nashville

Newman: Is there a truer line than “I only talk to God when I need a favor?” In an extremely competitive category, all five of these songs were well-produced and well-sung, but the marriage of the message and Jelly Roll’s urgent vocal delivery provided the strongest gut punch. Winner: “Need a Favor”

Nicholson: With “Fast Car” and “Last Night” pulling such strong showings over the past year and going head-to-head in this category, either could pull off the win here. “Next Thing You Know” and “Burn It Down” are also both excellent. But Jelly Roll’s emotional plea and four weeks at No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart is the top contender to bring in the trophy. Winner: “Need a Favor”

Song of the Year

[Awarded to Songwriter(s)/Publisher(s)/Artist(s)]

“Fast Car” – Luke Combs; Songwriters: Tracy Chapman; Publishers: Purple Rabbit

“Heart Like a Truck” – Lainey Wilson; Songwriters: Dallas Wilson, Lainey Wilson, Trannie Anderson; Publishers: Sony / ATV Countryside; Songs of Riser House; Songs of Wild Cat Well Music

“Next Thing You Know” – Jordan Davis; Songwriters: Chase McGill, Greylan James, Jordan Davis, Josh Osborne; Publishers: Family Farm Songs; Hold On Can I Get A Number 1 Music; Songs of Universal Inc.

“The Painter” – Cody Johnson; Songwriters: Benjy Davis, Kat Higgins, Ryan Larkins; Publishers: Big Music Machine; BMG Platinum Songs US; Nashblonde Music; Pompano Run Music; Songs for Ellie May; Sony / ATV Tree Publishing; Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Group; Well That Was Awkward Music

“Tennessee Orange” – Megan Moroney; Songwriters: Ben Williams, David Fanning, Megan Moroney, Paul Jenkins; Publishers: 33 Creative; Bone Bone Creative; Sony / ATV Tree Publishing

Newman: All five songs were milestone recordings for the artists who performed them, and it’s a little hard to pick a 36-year-cover as the winner — but “Fast Car” checks all the boxes of what a truly great country song should do. All these years later, it still hits in the feels with its emotional tale of wanting a better life and all the stalled dreams in the world can’t make it happen. Plus, Combs’ delivery rings beautifully poignant.  Winner: “Fast Car”

Nicholson: Each of these contenders has made a strong showing on Billboard’s country charts. But while the songs from Wilson, Davis, Johnson and Moroney each offer up distinct takes on love and romance, Combs’s version of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” highlighted the enduring power of Chapman’s poetic-yet-unfiltered storytelling, and her signature song of aspirations and dreams dashed by poverty and alcoholism. Winner: “Fast Car”

Watch Cardi B Eat Caribbean Food Off Her Spotify Plaques in New ‘Billions Club’ Episode

In Spotify‘s latest Billions Club: The Series episode Tuesday (May 14), Cardi B feasts on some delicious Caribbean food while enjoying a few major streaming milestones on the side.

To celebrate having four songs on the platform surpass a billion plays, the rapper ate a meal of oxtails, rice and plantains while using her quartet of shiny new Spotify plaques as plates. In between bites, she opened up about making each track, starting with her 2018 feature on Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You.”

“This song is the perfect song to dedicate [to] my child,” she says in the clip while wearing a pink bathrobe and slippers. “Like, my daughter was in me when I did this song. When I perform this song, it touches me a little different.”

Trending on Billboard

Cardi’s first child — a daughter named Kulture Kiari, whom she shares with Offset along with son Wave — was born in July 2018, less than two months after her collaboration with Maroon 5 dropped. The New York native also released “I Like It” with Bad Bunny and J Balvin while she was expecting her baby girl, not that she gave the two Latin music stars a heads-up about her pregnancy before meeting them for the first time.

“They just looked down at my stomach like, ‘Oh!’” Cardi recalled, laughing.

“I went to my Grandma’s house, and I played it to everybody like, ‘I have a song with Bad Bunny and f–kin’ J Balvin! Oh my god!” the musician added. “The three of us, we were coming up at the same time.”

Cardi also celebrated her collaboration with Ozuna, Selena Gomez and DJ Snake, “Taki Taki,” reaching a billion streams, clarifying that the song’s title has nothing to do with the popular spicy chip of the same name. “It’s just a word Ozuna made up,” she said with her usual hilarious candor. “I don’t freaking know.”

And of her “WAP” duet with Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi said that their two voices “just went perfect” together. “It meshed very well, like butter and f–king bread,” she continued. “It became such a political record, which kinda shocked me and kinda shocked Megan. The song is not that freaky.”

Three of Cardi’s four Billions Club entries reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 following their respective releases, with “Girls Like You” reigning atop the chart for a whopping seven weeks back in 2018. “Taki Taki” reached No. 11 on the listing that same year.

“I just want to say thank you to my fans because sometimes I can be a little bit hard on myself … I never feel satisfied,” the Whipshots founder said to close out the episode. “The goal is never going to be reached because I’m always hungry for more.”

Downtown Music Taps Curve Founder Tom Allen to Lead New Royalties and Financial Services Division

Downtown Music has launched a new royalties and financial services division called DR&FS, which will streamline all of its royalty services, accounting and payments systems, the company announced Tuesday (May 14).

The division is an outgrowth of Curve Royalty Systems, a royalty processing platform acquired by Downtown in January 2023. Curve’s founder, Tom Allen, has been appointed president of Downtown Royalties & Financial Services and will report directly to Downtown chief business officer David Driessen, the company said.

Through Curve, DR&FS already supports more than a thousand labels and publishers globally, including Big Machine, Mad Decent, Epitaph, Domino and others. Leading the Curve unit on a day-to-day basis will be Richard Leach, who has been elevated from general manager to managing director and will report directly to Allen.

Allen said the goal of the expanded financial services division is to ensure “every stream is accounted for” across more than 5,000 business clients and 4 million artist relations. DR&FS provides real-time access to statement balances and detailed analytics data broken down by territory, usage type and income source.

“Downtown Royalties and Financial Services is both a commitment to the expansion of our core offering into deeper services and solving payment problems to our customers, and to simplifying the financial complexities that artists and businesses across the industry face daily,” said Driessen. “Tom’s leadership at Curve has already elevated the industry standard for royalty management and financial services. His expertise will be crucial as he guides this new division at Downtown.”

Billie Eilish Shares Snippet of Loved-Up Unreleased Song ‘Feather’ in New ‘Heartstopper’ Teaser: Listen

Billie Eilish is giving fans a sneak peek at her fast-approaching new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, by debuting a snippet of one of its lovey-dovey tracks, “Feather,” in a brand-new teaser for Netflix’s Heartstopper season three.

In the clip posted Monday (May 13), Joe Locke’s Charlie practices telling Kit Connor’s Nick that he loves him, but struggles to find the words. As tension builds, the 22-year-old pop star’s track — which plays throughout the minute-long teaser — gets louder and louder, culminating in a vibrant, upbeat chorus that finds the nine-time Grammy winner belting with full force.

“I love you ’til the day that I die, ’til the day that I die,” she sings. “‘Til the light leaves my eyes. Forever, it’s even better.”

Trending on Billboard

The clip is one of the first tastes of Hit Me Hard and Soft fans have gotten ahead of the album’s arrival, which is slated for Friday (May 17). Eilish hasn’t released any singles in anticipation of her third studio LP, telling fans on social media when she first announced the project, “i wanna give it to you all at once.”

She has, however, teased that the record is something of a return to the sound and style she cultivated on her 2019 debut. “I feel like this album is me,” she told Rolling Stone in April. “It’s not a character. It feels like the When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? version of me … This whole process has felt like I’m coming back to the girl that I was. I’ve been grieving her.”

This season of Heartstopper, which is based off the book series of the same name by Alice Oseman, is set to premiere on Netflix in October. The eight-episode installment will pick up with Charlie and Nick getting ready to start the school year at the end of summer holidays.

“As they learn more about each other and their relationships, plan social events and parties and start thinking about university choices,” reads the press release. “Everyone must learn to lean on those they love when life doesn’t go to plan.”

Music Biz 2025 Dates and Venue Announced

In 2025, the annual Music Biz conference will be held May 12-15 at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel.

The conference attracts more than 2,300 music industry executives each year and has been held in Nashville for nearly a decade. The 2024 conference kicks off this week in Nashville, running from May 13-16.

Music Business Association president Portia Sabin announced the new dates and venue during her address during the Music Biz Brunch at the Music Biz conference on Tuesday morning (May 14), held at the JW Marriott Nashville.

Sabin previously told Billboard that the conference’s move from Nashville to Atlanta was inspired by the September 2022 start of the Music Biz Roadshow program, which has previously traveled to cities including Atlanta, Dallas and Miami.

“With the Music Biz Roadshow, we bring our members to different cities across the U.S. for free educational programs for artists and musicians,” Sabin told Billboard. “We got inspired by doing that because there are so many great music cities out there in the U.S.”

Beginning in 2025, the Music Biz event will revert to the way the conference had been scheduled when it was then-called NARM, when the conference frequently shifted to a new city.

“We will be on probably a two-year schedule, staying in a town for two years before going to another town,” Sabin said. Sabin noted that the conference could potentially be hosted in cities including Miami and San Diego in the future.

The Music Biz conference’s panel lineup for Tuesday (May 14) includes a wide range of topics currently impacting the industry, including neighboring rights, metadata, catalog sales and the growing popularity of Latin music in sync.

In 2013, the organization formerly known as the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) rebranded as the Music Business Association. The conference spent four years in Los Angeles before relocating the conference to Nashville in 2015. The Music Business Association headquarters continues to be based in Nashville.

Mon Laferte Signs With Sony Music Latin

Mon Laferte has signed a record deal with Sony Music Latin, the company tells Billboard.

In this “new phase” of the Chilean singer-songwriter’s career, Sony Music will continue to “enhance” her legacy and international visibility, according to the label. The Grammy-nominated artist is currently on her Live Nation-produced Autopoiética tour in the United States, taking its name from her 2023 album.

“Mon Laferte is a wonderful artist. We are thrilled that she has come to Sony Music, her home,” Afo Verde, chairman/CEO of Sony Music Latin-Iberia, said in a statement. “Composer, singer, and an exceptional performer, her excellence knows no limits. We are certain that Sony is the perfect place for her to begin the next chapter of her career. Welcome, dear Mon. May this new stage bring you much happiness and many achievements.”

Mon Laferte, who had been signed to Universal Music México since 2015, is known for her signature raspy, often dramatic vocals and use of classic Latin rhythms such as cumbia, bolero and alt folk. Her often personal and vulnerable lyrics have cemented her as one of the most consequential Latin acts of her generation.

“At Sony US Latin, we are very excited and more than ready to put all our resources and knowledge at the service of Mon Laferte’s extraordinary talent,” added Alex Gallardo, president of Sony Music U.S. Latin. “From the beginning of her career, she has been distinguished by her very personal voice and an incomparable strength to defend her art.
