Snoop Dogg & Jazz Singer Michael Bublé Joins Season 26 of ‘The Voice’

Snoop Dogg is currently in a phase of his life where he is unlocking achievements, and we are just sitting back and watching him do amazing things outside of making Hip-Hop songs.

Deadline reports that Snoop Dogg will be returning to The Voice, but this time in a full-time capacity. The West Coast legend and Jazz singer Michael Bublé will join  Reba McEntire, Gwen Stefani, and host Carson Daily when the show returns for season 26 in the fall.

The “Gin & Juice” crafter was a part of season 20 of The Voice as a mega mentor, while Bublé was an advisor to Team Blake in Season 3.

In typical Snoop fashion, he called Reba “the queen” of The Voice, adding, “I can be the king that brings the style, the funk, the fun,” per Deadline.

Snoop and Bublé will replace outgoing hosts John Legend, Chance The Rapper, and Dan+ Shay.

What Else Is Snoop Dogg Up To?

The news about the Doggfather comes after a plethora of other announcements. Last week, we learned his “Gin & Juice” liquor brand is now sponsoring an NCAA bowl game, giving us the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl.

“College football fans are exhausted by the constant talk around NIL, conference realignment, coach movement, transfer portal, and super conferences,” Snoop Dogg said in a video.

“So it’s time to get back to the roots of college football and what it was focused on — the colleges, the players, the competition, the community, fan experience, and the pageantry. Being a fan, coach, and supporter of all levels of the game, I’ve sent many players through my SYFL [Snoop Youth Football League] to colleges and the NFL, so it’s only fitting that I step up and help get this thing right.”

Snoop will also lend his legendary voice as a commentator for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics.

Earth, Wind & Fire Reaches Settlement With ‘Deceptive’ Tribute Band Over Damages Owed

Earth, Wind & Fire has reached a settlement with a tribute act that used the R&B group’s name without permission, avoiding a looming trial over how much the unauthorized group would have to pay in damages.

The settlement, filed in court on Tuesday (May 14), came two months after a judge ruled that the tribute group had infringed Earth, Wind & Fire’s trademark rights by calling themselves “Earth, Wind & Fire Legacy Reunion” — a name the judge called “deceptive and misleading.”

Following that ruling, a trial had been scheduled for later this month over how much Legacy Reunion would be required to pay in damages. But in a joint filing this week, attorneys for both sides said those proceedings would no longer be necessary.

Trending on Billboard

“The parties have reached a settlement in principle related to the damages issues that remain to be tried before the court in the referenced action,” the lawyers wrote. “The parties are in the process of preparing documents that reflect their agreement on the damages issues and that should fully dispose of the damages issues that remained unresolved in this action.”

The terms of the agreement, including how much Legacy Reunion will pay to Earth Wind & Fire, were not disclosed in court filings. Neither side immediately returned requests for comment.

Earth, Wind & Fire has continued to tour since founder Maurice White died in 2016, led by longtime members Philip Bailey, Ralph Johnson and White’s brother, Verdine White. The band operates under a license from an entity called Earth Wind & Fire IP, a holding company controlled by Maurice White’s sons that formally owns the rights to the name.

Last year, that company filed the current lawsuit, accusing Legacy Reunion of trying to trick consumers into thinking it was the real Earth, Wind & Fire. Though it called itself a “Reunion,” the lawsuit said the tribute band contained only a few “side musicians” who had briefly played with Earth, Wind & Fire many years ago.

“Defendants did this to benefit from the commercial magnetism and immense goodwill the public has for plaintiff’s ‘Earth, Wind & Fire’ marks and logos, thereby misleading consumers and selling more tickets at higher prices,” the group’s lawyers wrote at the time.

Tribute acts — groups that exclusively cover the music of a particular band — are legally allowed to operate, and they often adopt names that allude to the original. But they must make clear that they are only a tribute band, and they can get into legal hot water if they make it appear that they are affiliated with or endorsed by the original.

Ruling on the case last month, Judge Federico A. Moreno said the evidence pointed “overwhelmingly” in the band’s favor. In particular, the judge cited angry social media posts and emails from fans who attended the “Reunion” shows because they thought it was the original band — proof of the kind of “actual confusion” that’s crucial evidence in a trademark lawsuit.

“It is not a far cry to think that an average consumer looking for an Earth, Wind & Fire concert would believe that they could acquire that experience from either plaintiff or defendants,” the judge wrote.

The Skkn by Kim founder continued that her company “is rooted in inclusivity, representation and women’s empowerment, which are values shared with the WNBA.”

The WNBA players are the latest celebs to take part in a Skims campaign, joining the likes of Sabrina Carpenter, Usher and a group of male athletes including fellow b-ball star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder, who helped announce Skims as the official underwear of the NBA as well.

'Nope' World Premiere

Jordan Peele has a new psychological thriller on the way starring Marlon Wayans and has revealed its title and expected release date.

The wait for a new movie is over for those who are huge Jordan Peele fans. According to reports, the filmmaker’s Monkeypaw Productions and Universal Pictures announced the title of the new film last week – Him. It’s set to star Marlon Wayans, who plays a legendary quarterback who is taking on the task of training an up-and-coming star athlete, who will be portrayed by Tyriq Withers. Withers’ character will then train at an isolated compound used by Wayans’ character.

The movie also stars Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), Tim Heidecker of the comedy duo Tim & Eric, comedian Jim Jefferies, and rising Hip-Hop stars Guapdad 4000 and Grammy nominee Tierra Whack, who make their feature film debuts. Touted as a psychological horror film covering a “blood-chilling journey into the inner sanctum of fame, power and the pursuit of excellence at any cost,”, Him will be directed by Justin Tipping. The screenplay, which was lauded as one of the best unproduced screenplays in 2022, was written by Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie. In addition to Peele, Ian Cooper, Win Rosenfeld, and Jamal M. Watson will produce for Monkeypaw Productions. It is executive produced by David Kern and Monkeypaw’s Kate Oh.

Him’s release date in movie theaters will be Sept. 19, 2025. It was originally set for Christmas Day of this year but had to be taken off of the release calendar due to the months-long labor strikes in Hollywood. At that point, it had been called GOAT. This will be Peele’s fourth film after the award-winning Get Out, Us, and Nope. His production company recently released the Dev Patel-starred action thriller Monkey Man and is working on a horror game with renowned video game creator Hideo Kojima, which was announced last December at The Game Awards.

Zayn Says He Didn’t ‘Jump on the Bandwagon’ With Country Album

Zayn is dipping his toes into the country world with his upcoming album, Room Under the Stairs, but he isn’t just going along with the recent music trend.

“I was pretty much on my farm having a glass of whiskey and listening to a bit of [Chris] Stapleton by the fire with my dog, playing guitar,” Zayn told Nylon of his inspiration to go country in a story published on Tuesday (May 14). However, he added that while he’s “proud” of the upcoming album, he still worries about comparisons to people like Beyoncé, Post Malone and other pop acts who have forayed into country music recently. “People need to know I didn’t jump on the bandwagon,” he said.

He continued, “People are in search of a little bit more depth from the lyrics. In the Top 40 charts, a lot of mainstream music feels a bit wishy-washy. The songs are f—ing fire. You know what I mean? They’re catchy. They’re playing on the radio and they do their job, but people are looking for a little bit more.”

Zayn then doubled down on how much Stapleton inspired him, as well as icons like Willie Nelson. “I could really hear their lyrics and their pain and their growth and the life lessons,” he explained. “I didn’t feel like there was a Chris Stapleton song that comes on and he sounds like a f—boy, right? He doesn’t do it! He’s not out here saying, ‘B—-es in the club! We’re drinking Bacardi!’ Or whatever these young kids use now. He’s not like that. He’s got class, right? He’s telling you a real grown man’s story. And I respected the f— out of it. I was like, ‘This is cool. It’s something I can do.’”

The 15-track album, out May 17, will feature lead single “What I Am,” as well as tracks including “Alienated,” “My Woman,” Stardust,” “Something in the Water,” “Fuchsia Sea” and more.

Room Under the Stairs will mark Zayn’s first full-length solo project since 2021’s Nobody Is Listening. After leaving One Direction in 2015, the singer launched his solo music career with 2016’s Mind of Mine and followed it up with 2018’s Icarus Falls

Young Thug’s Never-Ending Trial, SCOTUS Copyright Ruling, Childish Gambino Case & More Legal News

This is The Legal Beat, a weekly newsletter about music law from Billboard Pro, offering you a one-stop cheat sheet of big new cases, important rulings and all the fun stuff in between.

This week: A deep dive into Young Thug’s trial in Atlanta as the gang case passes the two-year mark with no clear end in sight; a Supreme Court ruling in a copyright case filed against Warner Music over a Flo Rida song; Donald Glover beats a lawsuit claiming he stole his chart-topping “This Is America”; and much more.

THE BIG STORY: Why Is Young Thug’s Trial Taking So Long?

It’s been two years since Young Thug was indicted on accusations of running a violent street gang that terrorized Atlanta. It’s been well over a year since jury selection started, and more than five months since the trial got underway in earnest. The proceedings are expected to last into 2025, with roughly 100 more states witnesses still to testify. And all the while, Young Thug has sat in jail.

Pitting prosecutors from America’s rap capital against one of hip-hop’s most influential artists, the Young Thug case was always an extraordinary story – not least because it represented a flashpoint in a decades-long debate over the use of rap music in criminal trials. But as the case drags on for years, critics like Kevin Liles, the CEO of Warner Music Group’s 300 Entertainment, say the case has metastasized into something else.

“From the absence of bond to the extraordinary weaponization of creative expression, this case has always been an outrage,” Liles tells Billboard. “Now as the longest trial in Georgia history and with no end in sight, it’s also become a farce.”

For the full story, go read Jewel Wicker’s excellent deep dive into the Young Thug case – including how we got here, what experts think about the case, and what comes next.

Other top stories this week…

SCOTUS COPYRIGHT RULING – The U.S. Supreme Court sided with a Florida music producer in a legal battle against Warner Music over a song by the rapper Flo Rida, ruling that copyright owners can recover money reaching back decades into the past. The decision in the case, which music companies had called “exceptionally important,” could encourage more accusers to try their hand at litigation over years-old songs.

THIS ISN’T INFRINGEMENT – A federal appeals court affirmed a ruling last year dismissing a lawsuit that accused Donald Glover of ripping off his chart-topping Childish Gambino hit “This Is America” from an earlier song. A rapper named Kidd Wes had claimed that Glover’s 2018 Grammy winner was “practically identical” to a 2016 track called “Made In America,” but a lower court ruled last March that the two tracks were “entirely different.”

50 CENT DEFAMATION CASE – The rapper filed a libel lawsuit against his ex Daphne Joy over her accusations that he raped and physically abused her, calling them a “calculated attack” of false allegations designed to destroy his reputation. The rapper claimed that Joy made her statements as retaliation after the he  moved to take custody of their son – a step he claims he took in the wake of a lawsuit against Sean “Diddy” Combs that accused Joy of being a “sex worker.”

PORTNOW RAPE CASE DROPPED – An unnamed woman who filed a lawsuit accusing former Recording Academy boss Neil Portnow of rape abruptly moved to drop her case, citing a concern that her real name will be revealed. The move came amid a split with her own lawyers, who told the judge they would withdraw from the case due to “irreconcilable differences” with Portnow’s accuser.

ASTROWORLD TRIAL UPDATE – Settlements have been reached in nine of the 10 wrongful death lawsuits filed against Travis Scott, Live Nation and others over the deadly crowd surge at the 2021 Astroworld music festival, lawyers revealed at a court hearing last week, including the case that had been set to go to trial this month. The settlements leave pending one wrongful death suit to be tried – the one filed by the family of 9-year-old Ezra Blount – as well as hundreds of lawsuits filed by people who were allegedly injured.

DIDDY WANTS CASE TOSSED – Sean “Diddy” Combs asked a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit alleging that he and two co-defendants raped a 17-year-old girl in a New York recording studio in 2003 — one of several abuse cases the rapper is currently facing. Attorneys for Combs argued that it was a “false and hideous claim” that was filed too late under the law.

BRIAN WILSON CONSERVATORSHIP – A Los Angeles judge ruled Beach Boys founder and music luminary Brian Wilson should be placed under a conservatorship to manage his personal and medical decisions because of what his doctor calls a “major neurocognitive disorder.” The ruling, which came on a petition filed by Wilson’s family, appointed two longtime Wilson representatives, publicist Jean Sievers and manager LeeAnn Hard, as his conservators.

NBA YOUNGBOY DRUG CHARGES – A judge in Utah set a $100,000 bond for rapper NBA YoungBoy, who faces dozens of new charges involving allegations that he orchestrated a fraudulent prescription operation while he lived under house arrest as he awaited trial on separate federal gun charges.

DJ Akademiks Sued For Rape & Defamation By Ex-Girlfriend

DJ Akademiks

Source: YouTube / Youtube

Media personality DJ Akademiks has been sued for rape, sexual assault and defamation by his alleged ex-girlfriend. Fauziya Abashec claims she was raped by two men and Akademiks, born Livingston Allen, in his home in 2022.

Rolling Stone initially reported about the lawsuit, and the detailed claims it contains are heinous. Abashec aka “Ziya” alleged that she dated that media personality after meeting him in 2001. But in 2002, after what she says was about a year of not seeing him, he allegedly invited her over to his home.

But while she expected just Akademiks, she was met by two as yet unnamed men. She claims the men drugged and raped her on Akademiks’ pool deck. She also claims that sometime during the night, Akademiks sexually assaulted her, too.

Reports Rolling Stone:

Abashe says the drugs “impacted her memory and caused her to lose consciousness,” according to the suit. She claims she was later woken up at around 4 a.m. (July 17, 2022) in a bedroom by Allen, who was “pulling her hair, prying open her legs, and brutally raping her,” she claims. Abashe accuses Allen of penetrating her anally and vaginally and says she was “begging” him to stop and “crying for most of this assault but losing her ability to move physically.”

The following day, according to the lawsuit, Abashe asked Allen for details about what happened the previous night. He allegedly showed her a trashcan that contained two condom wrappers, which suggested to Abashe that, after the alleged pool deck attack, the two John Does had “taken her into another room in the house and continued to rape her brutally.” Abashe also claimed that Allen showed her surveillance footage of the alleged pool deck attack.

“According to Ms. Abashe, as she watched the video, she looked like she was just lying there lifeless, which did not sit right with her,” the suit reads.

Abashe claims she has text messages that support her story.

The victim also reportedly contacted the police, who suggest she go to the hospital for a rape kit. Reportedly, traces of Akademiks’ sperm was found after testing. Then, Ziya allegedly managed to get Akademiks to allegedly admit to the assault via a story that reads straight out of an episode of Law & Order: SVU.

Reports Rolling Stone:

After contacting her lawyer for advice, Abashe went to the police. The authorities first told her to visit a hospital for a rape kit, which she did; the kit purportedly led to the discovery of traces of Allen’s sperm, she claims. Abashe then spoke with the authorities in person and photographs were taken of bruises on Abashe’s arm, back, buttocks, and legs.

Abashe also sat for a “recorded wire call” with Allen, during which, she claimed, Allen “graphically recount[ed] and admit[ed] to having sexual intercourse” with her, “even going so far as to describe her vagina.”

This led the cops to obtain a warrant for the surveillance footage and other evidence. Abashe later claimed that Allen “disposed of several items (bed sheets, etc.) at the dumpster near his office. Presumably, Mr. Allen was attempting to destroy the evidence of Ms. Abashe’s rape.”

However, Ziya chose not to go to the police. Instead, she decided to pursue the lawsuit after partial details of the incident made it onto social media in late 2023. In a video called Story time with Ak! DJ Akademiks exposes his Ex Chey & speaks on her trying to ruin his Image!, Akademiks said, “She was getting trained by my two mens on my pool deck.” Ziya maintains she defamed before Akademiks was aware that she had no recollection of what happened yet he asserted that he didn’t know she was assaulted, allegedly.

That video, where Ak starts detailing the cops raiding home (see below), is still up and is surely evidence now. So far, DJ Akademiks has not commented on the lawsuit. Check out some of the reactions on Xitter to these allegations in the gallery.

Zayn Malik Says He ‘Didn’t Know S–t’ When He Got Engaged to Perrie Edwards

Zayn Malik is reflecting on his past relationships ahead of his new album, Room Under the Stairs, from breaking off his engagement to Perrie Edwards to welcoming a daughter with ex-girlfriend Gigi Hadid.

In a Nylon interview published Tuesday (May 14) — just three days ahead of the release of his new record — the former One Direction star shared that he’s currently happily single. But years ago, he was making wedding plans with the Little Mix vocalist, before the couple called off their two-year engagement in 2015.

“From 17 to 21, I was in a relationship,” he told the publication. “I was engaged and [planned to get] married and I didn’t know anything about anything at that point. I thought I did, because I was 21. I was legally allowed to do everything, but I didn’t know s–t.”

Trending on Billboard

“I never really had a girlfriend [growing up],” Malik continued. “My parents were kind of old-school, so I never brought a girlfriend home or anything. When I got the chance to do that, I jumped straight in, two feet first, and was like, ‘I’m going to have a girlfriend, and she’s going to live with me. This makes me a grown man.’”

A few months after he and Edwards split, the “Love Like This” singer sparked romance rumors with Hadid. The couple went on to date on and off for about six years and welcomed daughter Khai in September 2020, before breaking up for good in late 2021.

“From 21 to 27, I was with Gi, and we had a kid,” Malik said in a rare comment about the supermodel. “I didn’t really take much time to get to know myself.”

“I only have my daughter 50% of the time,” he added. “I would have her 90% if I could. We go see Disney on Ice or we go see the Nickelodeon theme park. Or we go to the beach. That’s how I get out.”

Now living in rural Pennsylvania, Malik is gearing up to premiere his new country-tinged sound May 17 with Room Under the Stairs, for which he also plans to embark on a tour. And for now, he says he feels “really content and happy with being single for the first time in [his] life,” although he admits his recent history does include a bit of experimentation with dating apps.

“It’s not been too successful for me, I’ll be honest,” he said in the interview of Tinder. “Everyone accused me of catfishing. They’re like, ‘What are you using Zayn Malik’s pictures for?’ I’ve been kicked off once or twice.”

Meek Mill Calls DJ Akademiks A “Rapist Type Couch Potato”

HipHopWired Featured Video

Michael Rubin's Fanatics Super Bowl Party

Meek Mill and DJ Akademiks have had their issues in the past and this week, the beef has officially been reignited. Via X, Meek Mill unleashed a barrage of insults aimed at DJ Akademiks, calling the popular media figure a “rapist type couch potato.”

Meek Mill, 37, went on one of his familiar rants on X, formerly Twitter, and among the replies, DJ Akademiks was a target.

“They all post bad about me because I don’t pay non of them that’s why they have Akademiks a rapist type couch [potato] controlling the narrative on the biggest battles to keep track,” Mill wrote on Monday (May 13), and has since deleted. “I been told him stop posting me they business flow when they speak only on the culture!”

Ak replied as he’s known to do via X, writing, “Can someone tell washed up ass Meek Mill to hang it up… you making the same mistake u did in 2015 bozo… stop tweeting. go make a track dummy. Mans mad his career got killed by a singing n*gga.. a blogging n*gga and cuz of a lawsuit. U blocked me weirdo stop talking bout me.”

Mill shifted his tone on X after deleting the above words but it could be assumed he was still shooting at Ak when he wrote the replies.

“Yall getting paid by white folk to destroy and tear down your own kind… this why as blacks we don’t own anything like the other races! They trained “n*ggers” to hate each other!” Meek wrote.

Meek also had some words regarding the beef between King Combs, the son of Sean “Diddy” Combs” and 50 Cent, which he also seemingly deleted.
