Billboard Canada’s 2024 Power Players List Revealed

When it comes to music, Canada punches above its weight. Artists like Drake, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber and Alanis Morissette have spent the last few decades among the biggest in the world – a feat for a country that pales in population to its neighbour down south. In boardrooms, too, Canadians are well represented in positions of influence.

That’s evident in Billboard Canada’s 2024 Power Players list, the first expansion of the Power Players and Power 100 to Canada. The list features music executives who are working on the world’s biggest tours, managing the industry’s most valuable song catalogues, and breaking artists from all over the world.

Trending on Billboard

One of the country’s biggest strengths when it comes to music is cultural fluency and a seemingly innate ability to globalize. As Punjabi music, K-pop, Latin music, Afrobeats and more global genres become ever more popular, Canadians are ready to both export talent across borders and capitalize on trends others might not even know about yet.

This year’s set of submissions and nominations were extremely competitive. The Power Players list recognizes achievements across the board but highly prizes impact in Canada and breakthroughs by Canadians on the international and world stage, especially those that can be clearly measured and substantiated.

The Leaderboard features executives from Live Nation, Warner Music Canada, Reservoir Media and more. Find the whole list here.

Canada’s No. 1 Power Player: Arthur Fogel

The industry icon behind many of the biggest world tours of the last year started out at a punk venue in Toronto.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour topped Billboard’s 2023 Boxscore list as the highest-grossing tour of the year and one of the biggest of all time. U2’s opening residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas redefined big-stage sound-and-vision spectacle and became the fastest-grossing residency in Boxscore history. And Madonna culminated her career-spanning Celebration Tour with a massive, record-setting concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, attended by more than 1.6 million people.

Arthur Fogel was instrumental in all of them.

Fogel is the Chairman of Global Music & President of Global Touring CEO of Global Touring at Live Nation. He’s stationed at the company’s Los Angeles headquarters, but he’s one of several high-powered Canadian executives in their boardroom. Michael Rapino, Live Nation’s President and CEO, is also from Canada.

And, Fogel notices, like they are on big stages, Canadians are overrepresented in some of the most important positions in the music industry.

“I don’t think the Canadian industry gets enough credit on any number of levels. If you look at the artists that have come out of Canada over a number of years and generations, it’s pretty incredible how much talent that has come out of a country this size,” Fogel says. “The same holds true for the business side.”

Shortlist Announced for the Billboard Canada Non-Performing Songwriter Award

Five impressive songwriters have been shortlisted for the inaugural Billboard Canada Non-Performing Songwriter Award, presented by SOCAN.

These songwriters each had a banner year in 2023, penning memorable songs with indelible melodies that garnered Grammy nominations, top chart placements, and millions of streams.

They are recognized for their work as songwriters for other artists, making an impact from behind the scenes – a first for an award of this kind in Canada.

Here are the nominees, with the winner being announced at Billboard Canada’s Power Players event on June 2 at the CN Tower:

Elizabeth Lowell Boland

Lowell is a singer, songwriter and producer known for her collaborations with Madison Beer, Charli XCX, Tate McRae, Charlie Puth, Lennon Stella, Hailee Steinfeld, bülow, Lu Kala and many more. Tobias Jesso Jr.

Tobias Jesso Jr. is a North Vancouver-born, L.A.-based songwriter and two-time Grammy-winner. He was also a major contributor on Dua Lipa’s most recent album Radical Optimism co-writing on multiple tracks including the big single, “Houdini.”

Jeremy Fedryk

Jeremy Fedryk – a.k.a. Sarcastic Sounds – spent much of 2023 immersing himself in the budding folk-pop scene. The year was highlighted by his writing contribution to David Kushner’s international smash “Daylight,” which accumulated over 1 billion Spotify streams and reached multi-platinum status in every major market. His success continued with the release of Chance Pena’s “I am not who I was,” which has amassed over 170 million Spotify streams and reached the top 20 of Billboard’s alternative chart.

Ali Willa Milner

Fresh off a Grammy nomination for her work with The Knocks and Dragonette, Ali Willa Milner found herself part of six Juno nominations for her work in 2023. Carín León, Boca Chueca, Vol. 1 (Socios Music)

It’s no secret that Carín León’s musical influences are extremely diverse: In fact, he once told Billboard that the first song he learned to sing was Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” when he was little boy, and that he had sort of fallen into singing regional Mexican because of where he was born in Sonora, Mexico — a region where that genre rules. In just a few years, he’s become one of the most important exponents of música mexicana today — singing over both R&B beats and a norteño accordion — globalizing the once-considered-niche style. Now, he’s fully embracing his experimental roots in Boca Chueca, Vol. 1 where he doesn’t hold back from showing off just what a chameleon he is in music and how innovative he can be.

From pop (“Otra Vez”), R&B (“Despídase Bien”) corridos tumbados (“Casi Oficial), alt-rock (“Frené Mis Pies”) and even cumbia ska (“No Sé” with Panteón Rococó), it’s important to note that León doesn’t totally abandon the ranchera sound that made him the star that he is. The 34-year-old singer elevates his core sound by incorporating subtle influences he’s taken from country and R&B. One thing is clear, whatever genre he’s singing in, León sounds right at home, cementing himself as one of the most versatile and eclectic artists in Latin music. It’s important to listen to the album from top to bottom to get the full Carín León experience. It’s a tour de force album that has set the bar high for future releases — and this is just the first volume of two. — GRISELDA FLORES

Olga Tañón, Así Yo Soy (Opción1 Entertainment)

If the opening title track is any indication, Olga Tañón is embracing life to the fullest (and with no rules) on her new studio album. In “Así Soy Yo,” –-a refreshing mambo reggaetón jam — she makes it clear that she’s not changing her ways for nobody. What remains consistent, however, is her reign as “La Mujer de Fuego” (the woman of fire), bringing to life 10 tracks that, for the most part, are innovative merengue fusions: “Vamos A Ser Feliz” with Christian Alicea, “Escondidos” with Sergio Vargas, and the Eddy Herrera-assisted “Ya No Soy Ajena” — a clever response to Herrera’s 2001 mega hit “Tu Eres Ajena.”

The Puerto Rican tropical star also experiments on Así Yo Soy: Her powerhouse vocals and empowering, relatable lyrics shine on the vallenato tune “Enseñame,” with Jorge Celedon and Lenier, while she takes on música Mexicana on “Amarte Me Hace Daño” and punk rock on “Tu Quieres Que Contigo Yo Me Vaya.” The set wraps with the ultra personal ballad “No Sé Quien Soy,” in collaboration with Lenier. — JESSICA ROIZ

Mau y Ricky, Hotel Caracas (Warner Music Latina)

For their third studio album, Mau y Ricky literally returned to their roots by taking a three-month trip through their native Venezuela, 15 years after moving to Miami as children. Led by producer Malay (Frank Ocean, Lorde, Fletcher), and inspired in music they listened to since their childhood, the Montaner brothers created songs using entirely acoustic arrangements, a lot of horns and brass, while experimenting with pop, funk, Latin and urban sounds.

The result is Hotel Caracas, a 16-track set that includes the previously released singles “Vas a Destrozarme,” “Pasado Mañana,” the Guaynaa-assisted “Gran Día” and “Canción 2,” as well as collaborations with Arcángel on “Hasta Olvidarte” and Ilegales in “Espectacular.” Each comes with a music video filmed in different corners of Venezuela, along with a 15-episode documentary on their exciting journey, directed by Daniel Durán and available here.

Hotel Caracas is a journey into the future while reconnecting with our roots,” Mau y Ricky say in a press release. “We revisited our passion for writing songs without following formulas or rules, driven by curiosity.” With songs that also include “Muriendo de Miedo,” “David Beckham,” “Amarte Tanto” and “Karma,” among others, it’s a fun ride from start to finish, full of nostalgia, humor and good vibes. — SIGAL RATNER-ARIAS

Gusi, Monte Adentro (Gaira Música Local)

Gusi embarks on a profound, introspective journey to reconnect with his Caribbean roots while infusing them with pop sounds in Monte Adentro. “This album is an invitation to look at that place where we belong,’ Gusi passionately shared during the launch of his new album in Miami on May 30. “Many of us have arrived in the United States with a latent dream that never stops. But we always have an invisible thread there that ties us to some place, some corner.”

This seven-track set is a collaborative project between Gusi and iconic Latin producer Emilio Estefan Jr. Together, they worked at Crescent Moon Studios in Miami, which, in Gusi’s words, “being at that studio felt like an award.” They worked on the album for ten days; Estefan chatted with Billboard during the launch and explained how, for him, music has to be done quickly to maintain its magic. “Music is like love; you click, and you fall in love fast, and you fall out of love fast, too,” he says.

The album aims to celebrate the diversity of Latin America, and it’s beautifully represented in this album full of rich fusions of accordions, trumpets and guitars with Gusi’s sweet vocals, as we hear in “Amores No Correspondidos,” “Me Voy Contigo” and the folkloric flauta de millo-featuring “Mil Ave Marias.” Meanwhile, the focus track gives the album its name and encompasses all the meaning it has for Gusi, as well as the importance of always wanting to return to his roots. — INGRID FAJARDO

Omar Montes, Lola Índigo & Las Chuches, “EL PANTALON (RUMBAS)” (Sony Music Latin)

Spanish singer Omar Montes joins fellow hitmakers Lola Indigo and Las Chuches for a vibrant collaboration on “El Pantalon – Rumbas”, creating a summer explosion. This cheerful flamenco rumba fused with urban music is a remix of Las Chuches’ classic 2004 hit “El Pantalon.” “I’m looking around the square to buy some pants/ Let them fit me very tight, let them fit me hesitantly,” they sing in unison — while, in the video clip, they are seen walking through a local market, as (you guessed it) they look for the famous pants. — LUISA CALLE

Manuel Medrano, Perfecto (Warner Music México)

Manuel Medrano takes his time between albums, and that’s why they come out so well. Perfecto comes three years after Eterno, and it was worth the wait. Perfecto is sophisticated, yet commercial, an album that explores pop, funk, dance and soul with elegance and attitude. “Verano En NY” is just like its title-chill, urban, fun; “Este Cuento” is uptempo pop with mixes of dance and acoustic guitars; “Luna” (with Arthur Hanlon on piano) is a sweeping acoustic ballad, backed by atmospheric strings; and “Miel” is pure disco. Throughout, Medrano’s deep, distinctive voice and well-crafted lyrics shine, always a welcome combination. — LEILA COBO

Grupo Firme, “El Beneficio de la Duda” (Music VIP Entertainment)

Grupo Firme is known for its party songs, but how well they do ballads? In “El Beneficio de la Duda”, composed by Joss Favela, Eduin Caz unleashes an emotion that is rarely seen in his music. This norteño ballad, accompanied by the accordion’s lament, is short and beautiful. “I don’t deserve the benefit of the doubt, but I’ll be grateful if someday you give it to me,” Caz implores in the video, singing in the rain and showing another aspect of his great musicality. — L. Cobo

Manu Chao, “Viva Tú” (Radio Bemba)

There’s something nostalgic and poetic about “Viva Tú,” Manu Chao’s latest single that pays homage to heartfelt connections. The eternal troubadour captures the simple joys of life, weaving them into a tribute that feels both personal and universal. It thrives on the heart-rending strums of a nylon guitar set to a mellow rhythm of a rumba; while, flamenco-styled vocal embellishments further enrich the tune. The track announces his upcoming solo studio album, out later this year — the first since 2007’s La Radiolina. “Cada día que me enamoro,” he sings, honoring everyday heroines from the baker to the sweeper, each verse blooming with admiration, celebrating the unassuming beauty of daily interactions. — ISABELA RAYGOZA

Taylor Swift Says She’ll ‘Never Forget a Second’ of Her ‘Magical’ Eras Tour Concerts in Madrid

Taylor Swift is screaming “long live” all the magic she made with her fans at her two Eras Tour shows in Madrid this week.

One day after wrapping up her two-night stay at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, the pop star gushed about the time she spent with her Spanish Swifties on Instagram Friday (May 31). “I LOVE YOU FOREVER MADRID!!!” she wrote, sharing a few photos of herself performing on stage. “No ability to convey my thoughts other than to just YELL that.”

“We just got to spend 2 magical nights dancing and singing with the most electrifying, passionate crowds and I’ll never forget a second of it,” she continued. “I can’t thank you all enough.”

In anticipation of her two shows at Décines-Charpieu in France kicking off June 2, Swift added, “See you ? Lyon!”

The “Fortnight” singer’s stay in Madrid was definitely one for the books, with Swift singing mashups of “You’re On Your Own Kid” and “Long Live,” “King of My Heart,” “Jump Then Fall” and “Our Song,” “I Look in People’s Windows” and “Snow on the Beach,” and “Sparks Fly” and “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” as surprise songs. Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and their three daughters attended, as did the Haim sisters.

Swift is fresh off the release of her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, which recently nabbed its fifth week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The 14-time Grammy winner has been performing tracks from the LP on the European leg of her Eras trek, which kicked off earlier this month in Paris and will run through August before swinging back around for a second North American stint in October.

NLE Choppa Thinks Drake & Kendrick Lamar Should Do a Song Together

NLE Choppa thinks Kendrick Lamar and Drake should squash their beef and do a song together. The Memphis rapper sat down with Billboard News’ Tetris Kelly to give his thoughts on a variety of topics, including the rap beef heard around the world. When the subject was brought up, Choppa had a sober way of looking at a rap battle that turned very personal.

“I feel like the win is more so not about who got the most streams or what song is the best. I think the win is more so how you handle the success you got from all that controversy,” he said. “I think the win’ll be like something like both of them coming together and doing a song together.”

He then used Drake and Meek Mill’s reconciliation as an example, saying, “I think the win is doing something similar to when Drake and Meek was havin’ they feud. Like, they did what they did, but they came back as men to shake hands and made a song. That’s what we need to see.”

He also talked about the success of “Slut Me Out” and “Slut Me Out 2,” attributing the latter’s over-the-top video to him wanting to be an entertainer. “I always separate Bryson Potts from NLE Choppa. I feel like that’s where I get my best work,” he said. “I’m entertaining in the purest form.”

Later in the interview, Choppa speaks on his vegan lifestyle, mentioning that he was in the middle of a nine-day fast of “raw alkaline” fruits and vegetables, with his biggest flex being his health. The highly successful NLE Reading Challenge was also brought up, in which he helped Cornerstone Prep Denver School read 26 million words.

Anitta Takes Over National Language Museum in São Paulo With ‘Do You Speak Anitta?’ Expo

Do you speak Anitta? It may sound like a rhetorical question given the Brazilian star’s universal hits, but it’s actually the name of a temporary Spotify activation at the Museu da Língua Portuguesa (National Museum of Language) in São Paulo. Open until June 2, visitors will get to “dive deep” into the world of the singer and “explore the linguistic diversity present in her funk beats,” according to a press release.

“Language is a dance. A journey,” the trilingual — Portuguese, Spanish and English — star said in a statement. “It can take us to unimaginable places and is taking Brazilian funk far and wide. My new album is a celebration of Brazilian funk, and I want everyone to get into this beat. I hope Funk Generation reaches every corner of the world to spread the word about our funk.”

Created by Soko, the core of the campaign is to reflect Anitta’s diverse origins and global appeal. “Anitta’s music is more than just entertainment — it’s a cultural phenomenon that transcends borders. With this campaign, we celebrate the richness of the Portuguese language and funk as its own language, a vibrant urban dialect that connects with the reality of the public,” added Diego Limberti, chief designer officer at Soko.

Trending on Billboard

Anitta most recently unleashed her new album, Funk Generation, which puts the Brazilian funk that has influenced the singer-songwriter’s career center stage. Marking her sixth studio LP, the set follows 2022’s Versions of Me and is home to the previously released singles “Funk Rave” and “Joga Pra Lua.” Anitta is currently on her first-ever U.S. tour, produced by Live Nation.

“We are excited with the activation of Spotify at the Museu da Língua Portuguesa, part of the Do You Speak Anitta? campaign,” said Manuela Ramalho, head of marketing at Spotify in Brazil. “Language and its forms of expression are fundamental elements in the construction of culture, and artists like Anitta play a significant role in this process, bringing new rhythms and slang, influencing the way young people express themselves and interact.”

SZA Offers a Tender Cover of ‘Lose Yourself’: Here’s How Eminem Reacted

More than two decades after its arrival leading the 8 Mile soundtrack, “Lose Yourself” has been reimagined as a soft ballad. SZA released an intimate cover of Eminem’s 2002 movie anthem — which spent 12 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 — on Thursday night (May 30). The Grammy-winner’s honeyed vocals soar over the icy piano keys and bass guitar as Solana slows the pace down.

She also made sure to clarify that the infectious cover wouldn’t be landing on any of her upcoming projects, as it was more of a mental health exercise. “U ever just cover Eminem on some tender s–t for feels? (Not on a project Just for mental health),” she wrote on Instagram.

Eminem got wind of the cover to his inspirational banger and hopped into the comments, leaving a surprised emoji.

Trending on Billboard

Plenty of her peers also applauded SZA, including Camila Cabello, Kacey Musgraves, Shelley (F.K.A. D.R.A.M.), Questlove and more.

“Holy s–t,” the Fifth Harmony alum wrote, seemingly in shock.

Others wondered what the status of the SOS deluxe and Lana projects were. “Sza this is beautiful but where’s lana,” a fan chimed in, while another wrote, “You’ll be doing anything but releasing that deluxe album.”

One more joked: “SZA COVERING EMINEM BEFORE GTA 6 WTF!”

“Lose Yourself” arrived in 2002 as the lead single from the 8 Mile soundtrack. The track went on to become Em’s first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper. It also won the 2004 Grammys for best rap song best male rap solo performance, as well as the 2003 Oscar for best original song.

Eminem and SZA have yet to collaborate on a track. However, Slim Shady returned on Friday (May 31) with his first offering of the year as “Houdini” hit streaming services. The single is slated to land on Em’s The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) album, which will be arriving at some point this summer.

The 20 Most Valuable TV Shows for Music Synchs Right Now

The experts help us rank the 20 shows that artists and publishers are most looking to get their songs onto in 2024.

Since the debut of MTV over 40 years ago, getting your song on television has been nearly as important to music promotion as getting your song on the radio. MTV (and then later VH1 and BET) were the national radio stations, guaranteed to instantly expand your audience and grant you entry to the monoculture. In the 2020s, music videos have all but disappeared from television, but getting on TV remains nearly as critical and potentially career-changing. Now, however, artists are seeing their fortunes changed by high-leverage placements in TV shows — and they’re not happening on MTV and BET, but on HBO and FX, and streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.

Of course, all TV shows were not created equal when it comes to music exposure. Some TV shows are national phenomena but exist so far outside the usual world of pop music that a synch on them barely registers with their audience, if they even feature any synchs at all. And other shows are mostly unfamiliar to viewers outside of their core cult audience, but have such a big connection with that audience that getting a song on there can be a major difference-maker, both in terms of short-term windfall and long-term impact. And then there are the shows with both a devoted following and a wide cultural imprint, where getting on one could you lead you straight to the Billboard charts — even if you’ve never been on one before, or haven’t been in decades.

With all this in mind, Billboard has put together its first-ever list of the most valuable shows for placing song synchs — in terms of the results they produce after airing, not in terms of licensing payouts. We determined our rankings based on cultural impact, demonstrable streaming success and data from Billboard‘s Tunefind-powered Top TV Songs chart — and perhaps most importantly, on testimony from the folks in music publishing whose job it is to place their artists’ songs on shows, whose words you can find in our write-ups. We’re trying to be as current as possible with this list, so while we do have some shows on here that have been on for awhile and/or don’t have a currently scheduled return date, we didn’t include anything that isn’t expected (or at least rumored) to return to air at some point.

Take a look below at our list of the 20 shows everyone wants to be featured on right now.

‘The Vince Staples Show’ Renewed For 2nd Season On Netflix

The Vince Staples Show

Source: Netflix / Netflix

If rapping doesn’t work out for him, Vince Staples has a solid acting and screenwriting career in the work. On Thursday (May 30), Netflix revealed it had renewed The Vince Staples Show for a second season.

The Vince Staples Show received critical acclaim upon its release back in February. But like anything involving creators of color, fans were wary after there was no immediate announcement of a second season despite the praise the show received for it’s combination of wit, consciousness and comedy.

Well, now we need not worry.

“The Vince Staples Show is back! The people have spoken and the most riveting, captivating, and polarizing show on Netflix is returning for season 2. Get ready for hijinks that only a mother can love. Thank you, Netflix!,” said the “Norf Norf” rapper in a statement.

Recently, Staples dropped a new album, his last on Def Jam, called Dark Skies.

Hip-Hop Wired spoke to Vince Staples just before his show debuted. One of his favorite episodes is the 2nd, where a bank robbery goes down and he happens to know the guys pulling the jux—the wildly enteratining dissonance is a mark of the show.

“We definitely wanted to do that,” said Vince Staples. “It was intentional because that’s life, you never know what it’s going to throw your way and within these environments, sometimes it can get extremely crazy. But also, we’ve been taught to keep our composure. And if something is normal you don’t understand when it’s abnormal to the rest of the world.
