In Canada: Allison Russell Named Billboard Canada Women in Music Breakthrough Artist of the Year

It was a special Juneteenth for Allison Russell.

Not only did she serve as the special Toronto opener for Sarah McLachlan on the Canadian icon’s Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th-anniversary tour, but she earned another big honor: Billboard Canada Women In Music Breakthrough Artist of the Year.

“It’s an honor to be acknowledged for the work that I’m doing and that we’re all doing together,” said the singer-songwriter when she was presented with the award in an interview with iHeartRadio Pure Country host Shannon Ella on Wednesday (June 19).

“There’s still such an imbalance in our industry, and it’s [an important moment] to be here speaking with you on Juneteenth [the holiday commemorating the end of slavery in America], which is a significant date because I’m not just a woman, I’m a queer Black woman,” she says.

Born and raised in Montreal but living and working in Nashville, Allison Russell has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and a vital voice for the representation of Black women in country, roots and Americana music. As her platform has gotten bigger, she’s used it to benefit her whole community.

Trending on Billboard

And it has gotten much bigger. This year, Russell won her first Grammy for best American roots performance for her song “Eve Was Black” and performed at the ceremony, playing clarinet and singing with none other than Joni Mitchell. She also made her Billboard Hot 100 debut with “Wildflower and Barley,” a duet with Hozier, who she’s also been touring with.

On those big stages, she’s usually playing with The Rainbow Coalition Band — a talented ensemble of Black and POC, queer and historically marginalized musicians.

“I make a point of playing with all women and gender-diverse folks on stage,” Russell says. “I do that because there is such an imbalance. It’s still a remarkable, unusual thing. No one says it’s so crazy that it’s just a bunch of dudes up there.”

More winners will be announced over the summer, culminating with the Billboard Canada Women In Music celebration on September 7. – Richard Trapunski

Music Publishers Canada Names 2024 Women in the Studio National Accelerator Class

There’s a gender imbalance behind the scenes in Canadian music, and Music Publishers Canada (MPC)’s Women in the Studio National Accelerator aims to address it.

Recently released statistics have confirmed the major gender gap that exists in multiple facets of the Canadian music industry, and this is especially glaring in the field of music production.

The Women In The Studio program fosters professional growth and advancement of talented producer-songwriters from across Canada. MPC has announced all six participants for this year’s program: Alysha Brilla from Toronto, Cat Hiltz from Vancouver, Charmie from Toronto, Jinting (Jinting Zhao) from Edmonton, JoJo Worthington from Montreal and Samantha Selci from Toronto.

Now in its sixth year, the program offers participants a series of curated workshops, skills training and networking opportunities with music industry leaders. The goal is to equip them with skills and connections crucial for their advancement in the music industry.

The accelerator will run virtually from June to December and include creative collaborations and an in-person residency week in Toronto in August. It focuses on topics including technical skills, financial literacy, music business skills and branding. Participants have also committed to exploring volunteer opportunities within their own communities.

Music Publishers Canada CEO Margaret McGuffin said in a statement that “with the help of our program partners and industry network, we are looking forward to breaking down some of the barriers that exist for this group of talented producers and give them the support they need to enter the next phase of their careers.” – Kerry Doole

Country Singer Bayker Blankenship Debuts on Billboard Canadian Hot 100 With ‘Maxed Out’

A new country artist is making his mark on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 this week.

Bayker Blankenship of Livingston, Tenn., has landed on the chart for the first time with “Maxed Out,” a melancholy tune about being down on your luck and low on available credit. With a relaxed pace and a touch of grit in Blankenship’s voice, the song strikes a poignant tone.

The song has been gaining steam online, appearing on Spotify’s Viral 50 USA playlist as well as charting on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs charts, though it hasn’t hit the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 yet. But that doesn’t mean it won’t soon — another viral artist, Lay Bankz, hit the Canadian Hot 100 earlier this year before she landed on its U.S. counterpart.

The song is only Blankenship’s second single, following 2021’s “Can’t Get Enough,” but the singer has built an impressive following online. He boasts nearly half a million followers on TikTok, where he posts his song clips as well as covers of songs by country stars like Zach Bryan and Dylan Gossett. Blankenship, who is releasing with Santa Anna Label Group, could join their ranks soon if he can keep up the momentum.

Meanwhile, breakout country singer Shaboozey‘s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” retakes the top spot on the Canadian Hot 100 this week. The Beyoncé collaborator has hit No. 1 in Canada, which he has yet to do on the American Hot 100. – Rosie Long Decter

MIN Opens Up About Battling K-Pop Rivals, Ageism & ‘Being Villainized’ Ahead of Debut Album: ‘This Is My Prime Time’

A longtime symbol of love, beauty and longevity, the camellia has made its mark on pop culture as Coco Chanel’s signature flower, teaching an important lesson about prejudice in To Kill a Mockingbird and, for MIN and her grandmother, the floral represents the K-pop star herself.

“Whenever it blooms, she always gets so excited,” MIN says of the sometimes-fickle flowers her grandma grows. “She says, ‘Min-young, you’re going to be like the flower that has bloomed! You’re going to do so well.’ She always tells me that.”

As July marks 14 years since she and her girl group miss A debuted with the instant K-pop chart-topper “Bad Girl Good Girl,” MIN might seem past the point of needing such encouragement (no matter how adorable). But on her 33rd birthday today, June 21, the Seoul native is releasing her first-ever full project with Prime Time. The four-track EP doesn’t just take its name from the genre-shifting title track but acts as a layered mantra.

Trending on Billboard

“On the surface level, it’s saying this is my ‘Prime Time’ and you don’t get to choose when my prime time is — no one gets to tell me when my prime time is,” she explains in her longest-ranging interview in years. “Internally, I’ve felt like I was very repressed in a way that I didn’t really know I was repressed: I didn’t speak my mind, give an opinion or say my truth. I always felt like I had to listen to my elders and industry higher-up people who got to pick my time or choose what I do.”

Dressed today in cozy, oversized sweats inside the comfort of I LOVE DANCE‘s Manhattan studio where she frequently rehearses, guest-teaches classes, and, eventually, found a music and production team in the newly formed Monstar Entertainment, MIN (born Lee Minyoung) has a subtle, humble quietness to her despite spending most of her life entertaining. After working on South Korean children’s television and joining K-pop agency JYP Entertainment in middle school, a teenage MIN moved to New York for an intended international solo career that included mentorship from Lil Jon. After years of prep, internal plans at the company changed and she was introduced to her future band mates Fei, Jia and Suzy months before they’d debut as miss A, the first girl group to come from JYP after its Wonder Girls became the first K-pop act to break into the Hot 100.

“I met Jia and Fei once when I came to Korea from America, but that was it,” MIN recalls. “After three months, we were together 24-7. It was hard, very hard…I was under a lot of pressure to be successful and be on the same level when it comes to music and exposure as your rivals; I had to hit the top spot every time.”

While “Bad Girl Good Girl” kicked off the quartet’s five-year string of consecutive Top 10 singles in Korea (including five Top 10s on Billboard‘s World Digital Song Sales chart), miss A released less frequently by its third year as the members’ careers took off down non-musical roads like acting, television, hosting and modeling, while Chinese members Jia and Fei balanced opportunities in Korea and their home country. MIN booked variety television and movie roles, but her original intentions for solo music seemed incompatible with the fast-paced K-pop scene and a rapidly growing JYP Entertainment.

“I have such a big respect for JYP and we still talk,” she says of the company’s founder and namesake who also produces music for his acts. “There are a lot of people working for one group and I’m one of the artists. It isn’t that my opinion doesn’t matter — we listened to everyone’s opinion to decide anything — but it also depends maybe how much money you make for the company and then people might listen to you and your opinion would matter more. It’s a big business with a lot of people needing to be paid…and maybe for some people, it is just a job. But for artists, it’s their life. It’s my life — giving 14, 15 years of my life. I have wanted to release solo [music], but it didn’t fit and didn’t happen.”

To encourage more miss A music and group activities, MIN found herself in the “peacemaker” role among her band mates around the band’s fifth year. “I believe that I tried my best at that time,” she reflects. “But I think that was already too late to take that role on or to make everyone happy.”

Indeed, before its fifth anniversary, miss A released what would be its final album, Colors, in March 2015. While the EP became the quartet’s highest- and longest-charting entry on World Albums, gossip regarding discord between the members began affecting its fanbase, and excessive media speculation led a young MIN to wish she had been more image-conscious.

Lauren Nakao Winn

Lauren Nakao Winn

“I didn’t understand the fans’ desire for us to be best friends,” MIN admits. “I think everyone wants that to be true, but I think it’s just very unfair. If I understood that, I think I would’ve acted differently. I was just young and feel like I should’ve thought ahead. It’s scary to be in front of people and on camera, and I would have acted smarter.”

Despite being characterized as miss A’s spunky main dancer, typically rocking a jagged bob and showing heel-over-head flexibility in music videos, MIN says she began battling high levels of self-doubt and anxiety near the act’s third or fourth year. At the time, mental health resources and using social media for direct fan communication were far from where they stand today in K-pop, allowing for rumors and anonymous trolls to run amok regarding the group.

“Just because I could dance and look strong doesn’t mean I can take or handle all the bad sides of the industry,” she says matter-of-factly. “Everything that we were and we did was fully under control, so I feel like a lot of people see me in a certain way. Things were more based on ‘the image,’ but I wasn’t a strong person, so I would get hurt by comments and online bullying — it just haunted me every day.

“I don’t really look at my stuff online. I always ask my friends if there are good [comments] that would cheer me up for my mental health and they would screenshot the good ones. But back then, naturally, I would maybe scroll down and see a bad comment, and I just couldn’t go to sleep. Wherever I was in public, I started to feel like, ‘Oh, maybe that person was thinking that.’ I felt my personality become very small and guarded…I still struggle with certain things and certain comments. In a way, I feel like I’m villainized, you know? It’s very unfair and sad, but I don’t want to dwell in the past and I don’t want to drag anyone down; that’s not me.”

By the end of 2017, MIN’s contract with JYP ended, and the company announced Miss A’s disbandment. While considering offers from new agencies, she “blocked every communication” and hid in her grandmother’s home as a safe space. She nearly signed on to join a K-pop survival show for idols rebooting their careers, but her grandma advised against it.

“I think I would’ve burnt out,” she recalls. “I just was not ready to face the world after my contract ended with JYP. I was in a really dark place; I was just scared to be outside or even be seen in public. I just had so much anxiety, so if I wasn’t seen then I could avoid all of that tension.”

Years later, MIN slowly returned to the spotlight with a new, noticeably un-idol-like attitude heard on singles like 2021’s “Onion” (with lyrics like, “I smoke, I drink, I get nasty with me/ Dirty, different and messy/ Patient, confident, weary/ Baby, there are layers to me”) and returned to New York (to co-star in the musical KPOP on Broadway in late 2022) settling in with her pet pomeranian Dan-chu. She credits the city in part to her music comeback.

“It’s a hustle; everyone’s hustling,” she muses of NYC. “I just get that vibe and energy in the city and of the people. No one cares if you’re a f-cking K-pop idol. No one cares if you’re whatever.”

Liberating herself of outside expectations and reconnecting with her love of music and dance in New York translated into the Prime Time album where MIN says she has the freedom to return to, as well as break away from, her image in miss A.

MIN’s comeback single “PRIME TIME,” featuring rapper Lil Cherry (who enlisted MIN on an experimental album cut in 2022), purposely opens with a knocking, harder hip-hop opening as a callback to her miss A days. Her soaring belt hops into a Jersey club beat before it all gets mashed into a glitchy, glittery, gutsy chorus.

“Nobody’s telling me that I have to put out my album by a certain time or be a certain weight by a certain date,” she says that doubles as an anthem against stereotypes and pretenses in the K-pop industry.

“I felt like I’m an old person, but I am not an old person!” she laughs. “The average age is so young, especially in the idol world, so you breathe in that air and perceive it like that…but I’m just doing this because I want to and I think now is a time that I can fully [use] my potential to the fullest without caring too much of anyone’s demands — it’s on my terms.”

Lauren Nakao Winn

Listening through the EP, “SHIMMY (Skip)” shrewdly uses a Korean playground song as a basis for setting boundaries (“I can be anything, you can’t tell me what to sing”) while the breezy, easy-listening pop of “M.A.W” (standing for “Might as Well”) is a personal motto for both her and her grandmother — who closes the EP with a surprise, uplifting voice recording on “HAPPY PLANT (A Call From Grandma).”

“She’s my role model,” MIN is sure to add. “Whenever I had to make a big decision, I always go to her and ask her opinion. She would say, ‘Might as well just do it.’” While Grandma is excited about her granddaughter’s music (“She’s just so happy for me”), MIN also wants to make sure listeners understand that the confidence in Prime Time results from not letting the outside world crush what and who she loves on the inside.

“I want to give people who are in the hardest moment of their life a message of hope and encouragement,” she says. “I feel like I could relate to them because there have been so many ups and downs in my life as well. I want people to know that it’s okay and you don’t have to give up on your life. Don’t. Because there is someone that loves you.”

The final seconds of the EP echo just that: MIN’s sunny laugh and her grandmother’s warm rasp ending “Call From Grandma,” telling each other that they love one another.

Béis is no stranger to going viral for its fashionable accessories, whether its the coveted Weekender bag that consistently sells out with each exclusive shade drop, or its deceptively spacious belt bag that keeps your phone and wallet just a zip away. To expand on its success, the belt bags now come in statement-making (and limited-edition) colorways that are the embodiment of vacation vibes.

There are two new patterns you can pick from now: Honey stripe, which is a mustard yellow and cream striped look, and Maple stripe that switches the yellow for a deep brown. Each one is priced at $58 and includes praise-worthy features including a two-in-one design and attached key leash.

But once they’re sold out, these limited-edition Béis belt bags could be gone for good. Keep reading to shop the new shades below.

The Belt Bag in Honey Stripe

Bring a touch of sunshine to your looks with the Honey stripe belt bag, which you can pair with your cozy flight athleisure or casual shopping spree attire alike. Instead of wearing a solid shade, the design brings texture to your outfits using a yarn material that’s made from a 100% cotton material. The main compartment is made from a polyester fabric and includes a smaller mesh pocket for smaller items. Since it’s made with a buckle strap, you can wear it across your chest, waist or attach it to your luggage with the built-in clip.

Another option is the Maple stripe version, which is ideal if you want a more neutral coloring to pair with your outfits.

The Belt Bag in Maple Stripe

The Maple stripe belt bag also uses a 100% cotton yarn material with various storage options including a back zip pocket for your phone as well as a main compartment for holding your passport, tickets and even emergency lip gloss. One of the most notable features though is the attached key leash that includes a mini card holder that’ll ensure your ID and credit cards don’t slip out.

Most reviewers consider this belt bag the perfect “grab and go” accessory, as it’s easy to strap on and includes enough space for all of your must-have travel items — including a Kindle, according to shoppers.

“Recently returned from a trip around Europe and have been converted to crossbody bag life,” wrote one reviewer, who said she was able to carry an umbrella, camera, wallet, powerbank, gum and passport in the bag. “[It] was easy to access on the go and felt secure by having tickets, passport and cash in the back zipper pocket while keeping cards and ID in the wallet on the leash that came with the bag.”

KKR to Acquire Superstruct, Organizer of the Sziget & Wacken Open Air Music Festivals

Global investment firm KKR has agreed to acquire the European festivals organizer Superstruct Entertainment from Providence Equity Partners, it was announced on Friday (June 21).

Superstruct — which organizes Sziget, the Budapest music festival that’s one of Europe’s largest, and Wacken Open Air, the world’s largest heavy metal festival held in Germany — was founded in 2017 by Providence and James Barton, a former Live Nation executive who founded the Liverpool-based night club Cream.

Providence grew Superstruct rapidly through acquisitions — it now operates 80 festivals in Europe and Australia — and carried it through the downturn in the live events industry caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The surge in demand for live entertainment and the continued growth forecast gave the private equity firm the opportunity to cash out.

Trending on Billboard

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though the Financial Times reported that Superstruct sold for around €1.3 billion ($1.39 billion). Providence has an option to invest €250 million ($268 million) into Superstruct, according to the statement from KKR.

KKR, which has partnered with BMG on investments in the past, will tap into its network of music and media companies to expand Superstruct’s dominance as a European festival promoter, according to a statement by partner/co-head of European private equity Philipp Freise and partner Franziska Kayser.

KKR made the investment through its $8 billion European Fund VI. Through that fund, KKR has also invested in communications company FGS Global and German SpaceX customer OHB.

Goldman Sachs acted as financial adviser and Kirkland & Ellis provided legal advice to KKR. HSBC and LionTree provided Providence financial advice, while White & Case served as the firm’s legal adviser.

The H-Town rapper released the tracklist for the 18-song set on social media on Friday (June 21) and the project is loaded with versatile guests. Meg will team up with the Grammy-winning Victoria Monét for a moody collab on “Spin.”

She connects the generations of Houston as old school meets new school with UGK appearing on the album. It’s unclear if “Paper Together” invites a Bun B solo appearance or features posthumous vocals from the late Pimp C, who Meg is a massive fan of.

Other features include her Hot Girl Summer tourmate GloRilla, 41’s Kyle Richh and Yuki Chiba. One of the song titles recalls a 2010s Billboard Hot 100 hit. David Guetta’s “Where Them Girls At” arrived in 2011 alongside Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida, which reached a peak of No. 14 on the Hot 100.

MEGAN is filled with previously-released serpentine-themed singles such as No. 1 hit “HISS,” “BOA” and album closer “COBRA.”

The Houston Hottie looks at this album as a “rebirth” of sorts after closing the book on the Tory Lanez shooting, which saw him sentenced to 10 years behind bars last August.

“This is music I would like if I wasn’t Megan Thee Stallion. I don’t want to say I’m tapping into other genres. I’m just tapping into other sounds. But it’s still very much Megan Thee Stallion. It won’t feel like I went so left. It’ll feel true to me,” she told L’OFFICIEL of the project. “You’ll almost be like, ‘I wouldn’t have thought she would’ve rapped over that, but this sounds great.’”

The 29-year-old wraps up the North American leg of her Hot Girl Summer Tour this weekend with a pair of shows in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Permanent Jon Bon Jovi Hologram Installed at Singer’s New Nashville Bar & Venue

Jon Bon Jovi‘s newly opened, five-story bar and music venue in downtown Nashville, JBJ’s Nashville, has permanently installed a new hologram unit featuring the iconic singer.

The unit, which features Jon Bon Jovi as a 4K hologram, was installed by Proto Inc. in partnership with the venue and Big Plan Holdings. Later this year, a second Proto unit will be installed with more members of his namesake band, Bon Jovi, appearing in hologram form. JBJ’s Nashville will also have the ability to beam in surprise guests as live holograms that can be seen and heard by fans in the club, just as if they were there in person.

This is the first time a Proto hologram unit has been permanently installed in a dedicated music venue or restaurant.

A Proto hologram unit featuring Jon Bon Jovi was used in January when the singer was honored during the MusiCares Person of the Year event during Grammy weekend in Los Angeles. Other artists who have used Proto include Kane Brown, Walker Hayes, Jewel, Elton John, Olivia Rodrigo, Tanya Tucker and will.I.am. Proto units have also been installed at Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club in Las Vegas, Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts’ Beverly Wilshire hotel, JFK Terminal 4 and more.

“This innovative addition of the Proto Hologram of Jon at JBJ’s exemplifies the commitment to delivering unforgettable experiences here on Broadway,” said Matthew Bongiovi of Bon Jovi Management in a statement.

“The enthusiastic response online to Jon’s Proto hologram highlights the excitement for what we bring to the table,” added Josh Joseph, founder/CEO of Big Plan Holdings. “JBJ’s Nashville is positioning itself as a leader in groundbreaking live events.”

“I’m thrilled to see Jon Bon Jovi integrating Proto Hologram technology into JBJs Nashville,” said David Nussbaum, founder of Proto Hologram. “Our technology transforms live performances into a ‘Runaway’ experience, allowing artists like Jon Bon Jovi to connect with their audiences in a way that’s never been possible before. It’s an honor to be part of such an innovative project, and I can’t wait for fans to experience the magic firsthand.”

Earlier this month, Bon Jovi played a surprise, five-song set at the grand opening of JBJ’s Nashville. The 37,000-square-foot venue features a stage on the ground floor and walls featuring photos of the group that span its three-decade career.

June also saw the release of Bon Jovi’s new album, Forever, and the Hulu series Thank You, Goodnight — The Bon Jovi Story.
