New York Mets’ Jose Iglesias, a.k.a. Candelita, Achieves First No. 1 on a Billboard Chart With ‘OMG’

New York Mets’ infielder Jose Iglesias – recording under the moniker Candelita – is just getting started on a chart winning streak as he debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Digital Song Sales survey (dated July 20) with his debut single, “OMG.”

The Cuban-American baseball player, and now also Latin pop artist, sang “OMG” live for the first time after a 7-2 Mets’ win over the Houston Astros at Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y., on June 28. According to Luminate, the single sold a little over 1,000 downloads in the United States during the June 29-July 4-tracking week.

The high-spirited song, adopted as a Mets anthem, about overcoming hard times, and penned by Iglesias in 2023, has translated into a fastball of positive energy for the Mets (who are now up to 45-45 on the season following a win on July 9), and Iglesias, who captures his first Billboard No. 1 entry on a first try.

Trending on Billboard

Notably, Iglesias’ new No. 1 matches the uniform number that’s he’s worn over the years; he now sports No. 11 for the Mets. The 34-year-old broke through to the majors in 2011 with the Boston Red Sox and has played for seven Major League Baseball teams. He’s currently hitting .313, having compiled a .279 average in over 1,000 big league games.

Iglesias/Candelita, meanwhile, joins other baseball players-turned artists who have scored hits in the musical field, and on Billboard rankings. Here’s a team of five such notable stars:

Deion Sanders: The former baseball and football player – aka, “Prime Time” – played 14 years in the NFL and nine in MLB. He made his Billboard chart debut in 1995 with Prime Time, his debut album released in 1994 through MC Hammer’s Bust It Records. The 16-track effort hit No. 14 on Heatseekers Albums and No. 70 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Also, an actor and football coach, Sanders won Super Bowls XXIX and XXX and earned eight NFL Pro Bowl selections between 1991 and 1999.

Bernie Williams: The Puerto Rican-born former all-star baseball player and four-time World Series winner for the New York Yankees, secured his first entry on the Billboard 200 as The Journey Within debuted in 2003 and reached No. 57. The 13-track set concurrently took Williams to No. 3 on Jazz Albums. In 2009, he topped Smooth Jazz Airplay with “Go for It” after his LP Moving Forward gave him another No. 3 peak on Jazz Albums. “Ritmo De Otoño,” featuring Dave Koz, marked Williams’ second Smooth Jazz Airplay No. 1, holding strong at the summit for seven weeks in 2010.

Bronson Arroyo: In 2005, the Cuban-American baseball player, a veteran of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks, achieved his first entry on Billboard 200 with the No. 123 debut and peak of his collection Covering the Bases, which also reached No. 2 on Heatseekers Albums. The set capitalized on the pitcher/musician’s popularity after the Red Sox, for whom he won 10 games in 2004, won the World Series that year, ending a famed 86-year title drought.

Barry Zito: The former American baseball player, who pitched for the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants, reached No. 18 on Heatseekers Albums with his EP No Secrets in 2017. He now focuses on producing and writing music. “My dream in music was always to be a writer-producer, even in my early baseball days, when I was able to hang out with some amazing producers in L.A.,” the 2002 American League Cy Young Award winner and 2012 World Series champ told Billboard earlier this year. “After I came to Nashville in 2015, [I] was a little more into the songwriting, which I view now as so necessary. Writing with a lot of great writers and published writers helped me so much in my role now as a producer.”

Yoán Moncada: In 2021, the Cuban-American, and Chicago White Sox infielder since 2017, reached a No. 16 high on the Tropical Airplay chart with “Desastre Personal.” This week, he began a rehab assignment following an injury that has limited him to 11 major league games this year, although he hit .282 when playing. He scored single-year bests of 25 home runs and 79 runs batted in and a .315 average in 2019.

Is Ye Retiring From Music? | Billboard News

According to an alleged text message exchange between Ye and Rich the Kid, Ye may be retiring from professional music. Keep watching for all the details!

Tetris Kelly:

Ye says he’s quitting music, but can his collab partner convince him not to? Rich the Kid posted a text conversation he allegedly had with Ye where the rapper, formerly known as Kanye West, said he’s “retiring from professional music” and that he “didn’t know what else to do.” Rich the Kid protested saying the kids need him and said he and Ty Dolla $ign made the biggest stamp on culture in 2024. While we don’t know if Ye is really giving up on the music biz for good, he has three features on Rich the Kids album, “Life’s A Gamble,” which drops next Friday. Also Ye and Ty announced a listening event for their joint projects next month in Korea. So we’ll just have to wait and see if Ye is really done, done.

Tim Bowman Jr. & Faith City Music Lead Gospel Airplay Chart With ‘Nobody But God’

Tim Bowman Jr. banks his third chart-topper on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart, and backing choir Faith City Music adds its second leader, as “Nobody But God” ascends to No. 1 on the survey dated July 13. The song increased by 8% in plays during the June 28-July 4 tracking week, according to Luminate.

Bowman Jr., who hails from Detroit, co-authored the track with Demi Borders and Joshua Davis, and he co-produced it with Pjay Edmund.

“This is my third No. 1 hit, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Bowman Jr. tells Billboard. “The way that radio listeners have rallied around this song blows my mind.”

Bowman Jr. previously topped Gospel Airplay for two weeks in June 2023 with “Jesus,” also with Faith City Music and Le’Andria Johnson, and “I’m Good,” which led the list for a week in February 2016.

Bowman Jr. boasts two other top 10s among his eight Gospel Airplay chart appearances: “Fix Me,” which rose to No. 6 in April 2017, and Vickie Winans’ “How I Get Over You,” on which he’s featured (No. 3, December 2009).

“Nobody But God” is from Bowman Jr. and Faith City Music’s LP Welcome to Faith City, which arrived at its No. 4 peak on Top Gospel Albums in November 2022, becoming his third top 10 and Faith City Music’s first.

Plus, like father, like son: Bowman Jr.’s dad, Tim Bowman, a noted jazz and gospel artist, has also hit the Gospel Airplay top 10, as “My Praise” reached No. 8 in 2005.

In the 12-second clip, Thee Stallion rocks a blue skirt and white gloves to go with her blonde wig to nail the Sailor Moon cosplay. Megan Thee Sailor trades in her twerking expertise to show off a few dance moves while gyrating to her Megan album standout “Mamushi” featuring Japanese rapper Yuki Chiba.

“Mamushi” was one of three tracks to hit the Billboard Hot 100 from the Houston Hottie’s Megan album, as it debuted at No. 68 just a lot behind “Otaku Hot Girl” on the chart.

It’s not the first time Megan has rocked the Usagi Tsukino-inspired outfit. During her first trip to Japan in 2022, the “WAP” rapper donned the schoolgirl wardrobe while performing on stage. “No like you have no ideaaaa how happy I am in Japan,” she wrote at the time on X.

Megan completed her “rebirth” with the arrival of her Megan album on June 28, which featured UGK, Victoria Monet, GloRilla, Big K.R.I.T. and more. The LP debuted atop Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart after moving 64,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. for the tracking week of June 28 – July 4, according to Luminate.

Diddy Slammed For White Water Rafting Amidst Legal Woes

HipHopWired Featured Video

Celebrity Sightings In London - November 08, 2023

Diddy might need better guidance on how to keep a lower profile. He has been criticized for living his best life while facing legal problems.

As reported by Page Six the Bad Boy Entertainment founder was recently spotted in Wyoming vacationing with his family. Wearing a life vest and black shorts the “Missing You” rapper was white water rafting at Snake River and enjoying the sun. After the water festivities, he and his family boarded his private jet named “Combs Air”.

Paparazzi were tipped off to his whereabouts and captured photos of him out and about. Naturally, the imagery struck a bad chord with his accusers. In an exclusive statement to TMZ, Cassie Ventura’s lawyer Douglas Wigdor says “I don’t think white water rafting will prepare him for the choppy waters that lie ahead.”

Adria English’s attorney Ariel Mitchell-Kidd also expressed her disapproval saying “After seeing Defendant Combs white water rafting and jetting around on his personal plane, seemingly enjoying life despite all the atrocities he has caused and has been accused of by countless individuals over decades, Mrs. English is even more motivated to ensure justice prevails.

“English claims she was trafficked by Diddy at his invite-only all-white parties. She alleges she “regularly had to drink alcohol laced with narcotics like ecstasy and was encouraged to flirt with guests,” and was required to have sex with Jacob Arabov, aka “Jacob The Jeweler.”

Last week it was reported Diddy had put up his Los Angeles mansion for sale. This is the same property that was raided back in April. Combs has yet to respond to the matter. You can watch Diddy rafting below.

Serena Williams Talks About Trying To Deposit $1M Check on ‘Hot Ones’

HipHopWired Featured Video

2024 ESSENCE Festival Of Culture™ Presented By Coca-Cola® - Day 2 - Ernest N. Morial Convention Center

Serena Williams shared a funny anecdote about trying to deposit a very large check at a drive-thru during her career.

Tennis great Serena Williams was beloved and respected for her drive, but in a recent interview, she shared a story about how her focus led her to have a mishap at a bank’s drive-thru window.

Williams was the guest on a recent episode of the highly popular Hot Ones series from First We Feast. During the interview, as Williams got to dig in on some spicy wings, at the 11-minute mark host Sean Evans asked: “Is it true that you rarely collected your winnings your first year on tour and then once tried unsuccessfully to cash your first million-dollar check in a drive-thru ATM?”

“Yeah, those are all true,” the 23-time Grand Slam champion confirmed. “I never played for money, I played ’cause I loved the sport. I wanted to be the best. I wanted to win.” She continued, saying: “So my tax guy, he would be like, ‘You didn’t get your money?’ and I’d be like, ‘Oh, I didn’t get that one in Zurich,’ ‘Oh, I forgot that one in Moscow,’…I was just playing to win, and if I didn’t win, I wasn’t thinking. I was just so angry, that I wanted to find a way to get better and win the next time.”

It turned out that her focus led her to collect a very substantial amount of earnings. “I got my check and it was a million dollars,” Williams said. “Like, okay, I’m gonna go deposit it. I’d never really spent a lot of money. I was so serious. I don’t know what happened to me, I used to be serious. So I just went through the drive-thru … and the guy was like, ‘Uh, I think you need to come inside for this.’” Evans and Williams laughed as she said, “lessons to learn.”

The story was one of a few notable anecdotes that Williams shared, including a look at the stylish outfits she wore during her career including a denim suit she said was inspired by one that another tennis champion, Andre Agassi, wore on the court. Her Hot Ones appearance comes as her ESPN+ documentary series, In The Arena: Serena Williams makes its debut on Wednesday (July 10).

Joe Jonas Announces Single ‘Work It Out’, Says He’s ‘Excited & Emotional’ About New Music

Joe Jonas is diving back into his solo music career.

The 34-year-old Jonas Brothers star took to Instagram on Wednesday (July 10) to reveal that his new single, “Work It Out,” will be arriving on July 19. “I’m both excited and emotional as I’m gearing up to release new music,” he wrote in the post, with a scenic mountain and lake landscape in the background. “I’m humbled and grateful to collaborate with some of my favorite musicians and creators. I hope you find as much happiness and peace as I do when you listen to these songs.”

Back in March, Joe teased solo music on the horizon when he posted a clip with the caption, “The way I would’ve bodied this trend if I weren’t in the studio working on something new.” The following day, he replied to a fan’s comment daring him to share what he was working on with a 13-second video of his collaborators playing guitar in a recording studio.

This week: The biggest 4th of July bump comes for a late country legend, while Zach Bryan’s Independence Day-dropped new LP produces a new hit and Bossman Dlow continues his 2024-long winning streak.

Toby Keith, Forever Made in America

Last Thursday, America celebrated its Independence Day — and as always on the 4th of July, listeners flocked to familiar patriotic, inspirational and/or generally U.S.-themed pop, rock and country classics to soundtrack their holiday. Big gainers from July 3 to July 4 included many of the usual suspects: among them, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.” (up 524% in official on-demand U.S. streams to 2.7 million and up 219% in sales to 1,100), Katy Perry’s “Firework” (up 249% to 1.8 million streams and 186% to 500 in sales) and Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.” (up 196% to 2.9 million streams and 113% to 800 in sales), according to Luminate. But the artist with the biggest of 4th of July gains might’ve been one folks were particularly sentimental about this year: Country Music Hall of Famer Toby Keith, who died at age 62 on Feb. 5.

Trending on Billboard

Of course, Keith has always seen some degree of a 4th of July boost — particularly for his most explicitly American-themed hits, which were all up again this year, including “American Soldier” (up 308% from July 3, to 685,000 streams), “Made in America” (up 380% to 914,000 streams) and of course, the controversial post-9/11 anthem “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” (up 356% to a whopping 3.6 million). But this year, it wasn’t just those songs that saw huge streaming gains on July 4: so did non-nationalist signature Keith smashes like 1993’s “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” (up 70% to 864,000), 2003’s Willie Nelson-featuring “Beer for My Horses” (up 124% to 644,000) and 2011’s “Red Solo Cup” (up 119% to 351,000), among many others.

All in all, Keith’s catalog racked up 10.7 million streams and 3,600 digital song sales on July 4 — gains of 165% and 251%, respectively, from his July 3 totals — making for a hell of a nationwide tribute to a performer who made his love of his country as fundamental a part of his artistic identity as any other major act of the past three decades. – ANDREW UNTERBERGER

“28,” Days Later: Zach Bryan Has His ‘Bar Scene’ Breakout

Over the past two years, Zach Bryan has become the type of stadium-occupying superstar who floods streaming charts whenever he puts out a new album; it happened in 2023 with his self-titled full-length, and it’s happening again with The Great American Bar Scene, which was released last Thursday (July 4). And while “Pink Skies,” the lead single from the album, debuted at No. 6 on the Hot 100 following its May release, the best-performing new track from the just-released 19-song project in the first few days of its release has been “28,” the album’s wistful, string-laden sway-along.

“28” bowed with 2.77 million official on-demand U.S. streams on Bar Scene’s release date, according to Luminate, and has stayed steady over the next four days — and actually seems to be growing, scoring a new daily streaming high of 2.90 million on Tuesday, in fact. While multiple songs from Bar Scene could register Hot 100 debuts next week, “28” — which is up to No. 9 on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs USA chart, and No. 3 on Apple Music’s Top Songs — should notch the best start out of the new songs on Bryan’s latest. – JASON LIPSHUTZ

Bossman Dlow Scores Yet Another Hit Thanks to Viral TikTok Trend

After making a splash on the Billboard Hot 100 — “Get In With Me” (No. 49) and “Mr Pot Scraper” (No. 93) — and earning a bevy of viral hits along the way (“Big One,” “Talk My Shit” and the Glorilla-assisted “Finesse”), Port Salerno, FL rapper Bossman Dlow stands as one of the year’s biggest breakout stars. With “Shake Dat Ass (Twerk Song)” gaining major traction on socials and streaming, Dlow is eyeing yet another hit.

According to Luminate, “Shake” earned just over 317,000 official on-demand U.S. streams during the period of June 7-13. That figure then jumped by 60% to 508,000 official streams the following week (June 14-20). On June 16, TikTok user @mrflawdaaa shared a 14-second clip of himself exaggeratedly dancing to the song. The clip quickly went viral – it has since collected over three million views on the app – with many users latching onto the part of the choreography that features a glitchy sexy walk. During the period of June 21-27, the first full week with the @mrflawdaaa’s dance trend in the zeitgeist, “Shake” pulled 1.54 million official streams, marking a massive 203% increase from the period prior. The following week (June 28-July 4), the runaway hit leapt a further 117% to a whopping 3.35 million official streams. Over the past three weeks, official on-demand U.S. streams for “Shake Dat Ass” have exploded by over 956%.

Although he peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year with his third mixtape, Mr Beat the Road, “Shake Dat Ass” is featured on the rapper’s self-released debut project, Too Slippery, which dropped on Jan. 1, 2023. With everyone from Kehlani to Taye Diggs to Coi Leray hopping on the dance trend, “Shake” looks poised to continue its growth. – KYLE DENIS

Check Out Puffco CEO Roger Volodarsky’s 710 Day Hip-Hop Playlist

HipHopWired Featured Video

Roger Volodarsky 710 Day

Today is 710 Day and we hope the cannabis-themed holiday will be celebrated safely and around people you truly rock with. To aid in the festivities, Roger Volodarsky, the founder and CEO of Puffco, put together a dope 10-track Hip-Hop playlist just in time for 710 Day.

I interviewed Roger Volodarsky last year for the site and the Brooklyn native shared not only his life story and the early days of Puffco, but also the fact he’s a big Hip-Hop head. As fellow fans of the Flatbush Zombies and the whole Beast Coast collective, Roger and I found a connection in our shared fandom of Zombie Juice of the Flatbush Zombies.

I suggested that Volodarsky put together his favorite collection of Hip-Hop songs in a playlist and he came up with an idea far better than mine. Taking time out of his busy schedule running all things Puffco, Volodarsky whipped together 10 tracks for 710 Day that aren’t your typical “stoner” fare.

Roger Volodarsky 710 Day

The playlist opens up with one of my favorite songs, “Barz Simpson,” featuring the vocal talents of rapper and producer Sonnyjim alongside the late MF DOOM and the elusive Jay Electronica. Next up is Larry June’s “89 Earthquake” from the rapper’s collaborative project with The Alchemist, The Great Escape.

Any playlist with Dr. Baklava aka Action Bronson is a solid one and Volodarsky dug into the archives and placed “Imported Goods” on the playlist. The rest of the list is rounded out with tracks from recent XXL Freshman That Mexican OT, Moneybagg Yo, Peso Pluma, Quavo, Key Glock, Jgrrey, Zombie Juice, King Hendrick$, and Boldy James.

The variety of songs that Roger Volodarsky put together is impressive and kind of follows my CRT FRSH playlist ethos of mixing up all kinds of sounds no matter the region. There is no East Coast or West Coast bias, just dope songs from acts you should know and maybe others you’ll come to know. Follow the homie on his IG page here.

For now, check out the playlist below and have a happy 710 Day!
