J Balvin’s ‘Rayo’: All 15 Songs Ranked

“Life has shown me that pauses are necessary for human growth,” J Balvin wrote last month on social media, which almost served as a prelude to what seems like a momentous event in his career: releasing his first album in three years. “I’m here again, recharged with energy, grateful and enjoying music like I did when I started.”

In a time when the music industry is moving at warp speed, Balvin went against the current and slowed down, going back to his roots in an effort to reconnect with his day ones with new set Rayo. Even the name of the album is a nod to the early days of his career: “Rayo” was the name of a humble little red car he drove to personally hand out his CDs in Medellín when he was just starting out.

Rayo kicks off with a soft reggaetón banger, “Cosa de Locos,” which is reminiscent of the rhythmic-leaning sound that made Balvin a household name in the first place. From there, the Colombian hitmaker takes listeners on a joyride, where he often detours from reggaetón to arrive at dembow, house music or electro-pop, with collaborators that are just as eclectic as his album, including Carín León, Feid and Saiko.

Rayo follows Balvin’s Grammy-nominated Jose, which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. Overall, Balvin has placed four No. 1 sets on the tally since 2016 – also including Energía, Vibras and Oasis, his 2019 joint album with Bad Bunny.

Below, Billboard ranks all 15 songs from Rayo, in descending order.

Yung Miami Says She Stayed Silent About Diddy Allegations Because ‘That Wasn’t My Experience’

Yung Miami is breaking her silence on allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse against ex-boyfriend Diddy, reviving her REVOLT series Caresha Please on Thursday night (Aug. 8) for a sit-down interview with friend and fellow rapper Saucy Santana.

Santana directly asked the City Girls rapper (born Caresha Brownlee) whether Diddy (real name: Sean Combs) had ever hit her during their relationship, referencing a 2016 surveillance video surfaced by CNN in May that shows Combs assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura. Miami acknowledged that she had previously been in two abusive relationships, but said she didn’t experience domestic violence during her time with Diddy, when they were on and off between 2021 and 2023.

She also said she didn’t feel the need to insert herself into allegations against her ex — including a lawsuit from Ventura that was filed and settled in a matter of 24 hours in November, as well as other claims of sexual misconduct and lawsuits that have surfaced in the months since — since she wasn’t present for that behavior.

“I can’t speak on something that wasn’t my experience and I can’t speak on something that I don’t know,” Yung Miami said of why she had stayed silent. “I can’t speak on these allegations because I wasn’t around at the time.”

She also felt it was unfair that she was being asked to answer for Diddy’s alleged misconduct when his reported actions took place before their relationship. “I met Diddy when the world was celebrating him and giving him his flowers while he was still alive,” she said, referencing his Global Icon Award win and performance at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards and other honors. “So I was celebrating him with the world and I just feel like everybody is crucifying me for it.”

Ventura’s settled lawsuit opened the floodgates in November, with a pair of sexual assault suits against Diddy emerging later that same month, followed by one in December and one in February and then federal raids of his Miami and Los Angeles homes in March. While Diddy and his attorneys have maintained the hip-hop star’s innocence throughout the allegations, he did post a since-deleted apology video following the release of the surveillance video of himself and Cassie.

REVOLT, the home of Yung Miami’s Caresha Please series, was founded by Diddy in 2013. He stepped down as chairman of the network in November and reportedly sold his stake in the company to an anonymous buyer in March following his home raids.

First Donald Trump/Kamala Harris Debate Set for Same Night as 2024 VMAs

If you follow both pop music and politics, you may have to choose which you’re going to watch live on Tuesday, Sept. 10 – the first presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and VP Kamala Harris or the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

Trump agreed to the debate on Thursday (Aug. 8), after initially saying he wouldn’t appear. In response, Harris said on X, formerly Twitter: “I hear that Donald Trump has finally committed to debating me on September 10. I look forward to it.”

The Sept. 10 debate will air on ABC. David Muir, anchor of World News Tonight, and Linsey Davis, anchor of the Sunday edition of that broadcast, will moderate the session. That’s the same date that Trump and President Joe Biden had agreed to their second and final debate, before Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race.

Trending on Billboard

The first debate of the 2024 general election between Trump and Biden was held on June 27. Biden’s performance was so shaky that even friends and allies urged him to bow out of the race. Less than one month later, on July 21, he announced that he wouldn’t run again and endorsed Harris for the nomination.

There may or may not be additional debates between Trump and Harris. Fox News has proposed a debate on Sept. 4, and NBC News is hoping to host one on Sept. 25. During an appearance in Michigan, Harris said she was “happy to have that conversation” about additional debate(s).

MTV announced Sept. 10 as the date of the 2024 VMAs way back on April 24 – but apparently “dibs” don’t count for much in the high-stakes world of presidential politics.

The VMAs will air from UBS Arena in New York at 8 p.m. ET/PT. (So, depending on what time zone you live in, you may be able to watch both live.) The VMAs will be held just four days shy of the 40th anniversary of the inaugural VMAs at Radio City Music Hall. (That show aired three full weeks before the first debate between President Reagan and former vp Walter Mondale, so there was no conflict.)

This is the second time this summer that a newsworthy event in presidential politics has collided with an awards show. An attempt on Trump’s life occurred on July 13, less than two hours before the Kids’ Choice Awards was scheduled to get underway in Santa Monica, Calif. The awards went on as scheduled, with no mention of the stunning event.

Ticket Refund Policies Announced for Taylor Swift’s Canceled Vienna Shows

After three Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna were canceled on Wednesday (Aug. 7) following the arrest of two suspects who reportedly planned to unleash a terrorist attack on the shows this weekend, ticketing companies have provided information on how ticket holders for the concerts will receive refunds.

“We are aware of the news regarding the upcoming cancelled Taylor Swift shows in Austria,” Stubhub announced in a statement provided to Billboard on Wednesday. “All StubHub ticket holders will be notified via email, immediately. We will immediately provide StubHub ticket buyers with a 120% voucher toward another purchase, in line with our event cancellation policy and our FanProtect Guarantee. Buyers who prefer a 100% cash refund can make the request directly in their StubHub wallet.”

Meanwhile, Austrian ticketer oeticket posted the following statement to its website: “Please note the following information from the organizer: Due to the confirmation by government officials about a planned terrorist attack in the Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three planned shows for everyone’s safety. All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 working days.”

The same message was originally posted on Aug. 7 by Barracuda Music, the concert promoter for the Austrian shows. Details on how oeticket refunds will be processed were not immediately available at the time of publishing.

The announcement of the shows’ cancellation came hours after police confirmed that a 19-year-old Austrian citizen was arrested Wednesday morning for planning an unspecified terrorist attack on Vienna, the focus of which was said to be Swift’s concert. Another teenage suspect was arrested in the afternoon, according to ABC News.

Swift’s Vienna shows would have marked the Eras Tour‘s second-to-last stop on its European leg, followed by a five-night stint at London’s Wembley Stadium, scheduled for Aug. 15-20, for which Swift recently announced five new opening acts. On Thursday (Aug. 8), UK officials announced that there is no indication that the terror threats before the canceled Vienna shows will have any impact on her upcoming shows in London.

In October, Swift will return to North America for one final lap through the U.S. and Canada before ending the global Eras Tour trek once and for all with a show in Vancouver on Dec. 8.

‘Billboard Unfiltered’: Drake’s 100 Gigs, Ye & Ty Dolla $ign’s ‘Vultures 2’ & Latto’s Place in Female Rap

It was a busy week in the worlds of hip-hop and R&B. Billboard Unfiltered returns on Thursday (Aug. 8) with an episode attacking Drake’s 100 Gigs dump, Ye and Ty Dolla $ign’s Vultures 2 and Latto’s place in the pantheon of female rap.

Drake’s every chess move has been dissected by fans since the fallout from the Kendrick Lamar feud. Deputy Director, Editorial Damien Scott was complimentary of Drake’s shrewd decision making in leaking the three songs and archival footage, which he compared to something Ye would’ve done in the mold of G.O.O.D. Fridays.

Trending on Billboard

“We know he’s a person who thinks about the totality of not only his career, but the whole market and the people he’s playing against,” Scott said. “I think this is extremely novel. It’s really creative. The highest compliment I can pay it is this feels like something Ye would’ve done when he was still killing it. Back when he was doing the G.O.O.D. Friday releases.”

But he still thinks the Lamar feud was weighing on his mind with this move. “I think it’s not crazy to believe, ‘Alright, let me reset for a second.’”

However, Staff Writer Kyle Denis thinks Drake is nervous about the reception of his next single and found a loophole to test the waters. “I do think it’s p—y,” he stated. “Because I would think these three songs are all you dropped versus three songs plus 10 hours of archival footage. If you believed in this new stuff, why are we walking up memory lane at the same time?”

Onto Vultures 2, the panel agrees that the project’s original version didn’t feel completed with fans rightly wanting more from Ye and Ty. “It feels like Ye doesn’t care. If Ye doesn’t care, why should we care?” Scott asked.

Senior Charts & Data Analyst Trevor Anderson is surprised none of the tracks have caught on a path to disrupt the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

“Wherever you want to start post 2015, Vultures 1 ‘Carnival’ are the outliers… I think that was more of a surprise to people,” he said. “This feels a little below — I’m surprised there’s no song jumping…Everything has gone No. 1 going back to College Dropout, you don’t want to make too much of it, but when you look in the record books it’s, ‘Oh, this is where the drop-off really happened.”

With Kanye’s decorated discography, Deputy Director of Hip-Hop/R&B Carl Lamarre is frustrated knowing what Ye’s capable when it comes to V2‘s final product.

“This is somebody I still believe to this day — maybe you could put Kendrick in the same conversation of releasing five consecutive classic albums. To know creatively what he’s been able to do and have such a drop-off and not give a f–k? One of my favorite songs if ‘530’ and I saw flashes, but that last part it went downhill from there,” Lamar said. “That’s why it’s tough for me to dismiss him and say, ‘It’s fully over.’”

After getting an early listen, Denis has high hopes for Latto’s Sugar Honey Iced Tea album and thinks it could vault her into the big three conversation with Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B and Nicki Minaj in female rap.

“One of those [big three] spots is kinda shaky right now, for obvious reasons. This album — I think it’s better than every other female rap album we’ve got this year. I’ll stand on it. I’m very happy with this album.”

After a short hiatus the Boston bars-smith is back as Millyz returns from his break with some new work to once again showcase his talent on the microphone and help put Beantown back on the map.

Dropping off some new visuals to “Blue Strips,” Millyz continues to showcase how large he’s been living as he shows clips from his life as of late including rocking soldout shows, puffing cigars at fancy establishments and signing autographs for his day-one fans. Dope to see him get this much love and recognition.

Elsewhere Revus and Beenie Man turn a bar into the place to be and in their clip to “Twin,” the two men turn up at a small bar with a gang of thick and attractive women who dance the night away with the two artists while playing some pool and throwing back shots. We wish we was there.

Reacting To Drake’s 100GB Footage & Ye & Ty Dolla $ign’s ‘Vultures 2’ | Billboard Unfiltered

In this episode of ‘Billboard Unfiltered,’ Billboard staffers Carl Lamarre, Trevor Anderson, Kyle Denis and Damien Scott break down Drake’s 100GB footage and his joint album with PartyNextDoor. They also talk about Ye dropping ‘Vultures 2,’ the best songs on the album, and whether or not Ty Dolla $ign is the right collaborator for him. They give you insight on Latto’s listening party, how the women in hip-hop are doing statistically, their current favorite music and more!

Trevor Anderson:

Every stream counts, right?

Damien Scott:

But it doesn’t. He’s giving it away for free.

Carl Lamarre:

And how generous.

Kyle Denis:

Because you don’t believe in it.

Carl Lamarre:

Oh, wow.

Damien Scott:

We’re expecting something more. There’s verses on here that aren’t finished. There’s songs that feel incomplete. There’s, you know, I saw people talking about the artwork not being high res. It just feels, it feels like Kanye doesn’t care.

Kyle Dennis:

Her pen is undeniable, like she’s doing some of the best rapping of her career on this album, but also she’s really honing in on her hometown of Atlanta.

Carl Lamarre:

Hey, hey, what’s going on, guys? And welcome to a fresh episode of Billboard Unfiltered. Hey, we got a lot of topics to talk about, but the first one, we’re gonna dive into the 6 God himself,

Drake has-

Damien Scott:

I can’t believe you’re wearing that.

Carl Lamarre:

Come on man, we got to embrace it

I just can’t believe he’s like the guy. He’s like, the meme of the guy on the plane wearing the f*cking Trump shirt

Trevor Anderson:

And everybody’s walking past him.

Carl Lamarre:

We are not going to do a Trump, Drake that’s crazy.

Trevor Anderson:

But the reason, the reason why I’m so hyped is because we finally got new original music from Drake, but it came with a plot twist, pun intended. So pretty much Drake did an untraditional rollout where he released unreleased music on 100 gigs.com, but-

iHeartMedia Managed a 1% Revenue Gain in Q2 Thanks to Digital and Podcasts

iHeartMedia’s business has been in steady decline since the beginning of 2023 but showed signs of improvement in the second quarter.

Total revenue rose 1% to $929 million, slightly above the company’s guidance, but was up just 0.1% excluding the impact of political advertising. A spike in expenses — namely operating and selling, general and administrative — contributed to a 21% decline in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).

“We’re seeing sequential improvement in our revenue growth,” CEO Bob Pittman said during the earnings call on Thursday (Aug. 8). “While the marketplace continues to be dynamic — with a changing outlook on interest rates, inflation trends, global uncertainty and rapidly evolving domestic political landscape — we continue to see strong momentum in our podcast business, our digital ex-podcast business and the sequential improvement of our multi-platform groups’ year over year revenue performance.”

iHeartMedia’s digital audio segment contributed to the company’s revenue uptick. Podcast revenue improved 8.1% to $104.5 million, well below the previous quarter’s growth rates, while digital revenue excluding podcasts rose 10.3% to $181 million. Overall, digital audio revenue climbed 9.5% to $285.6 million.

The multi-platform segment fell 3.4% to $575.9 million. Broadcast radio, the company’s largest single source of revenue, declined 0.9% to $425.5 million. Networks fell 12.8% to $106.6 million. Sponsorship and events improved 2.4% to $39.1 million.

Trending on Billboard

Looking ahead, iHeartMedia expects third-quarter revenue to increase in the mid-single digits, which would be $991 million to $1.01 billion, and adjusted EBITDA to land between $200 million and $220 million, compared to $204 million in the prior-year period. For the full year, revenue is expected to increase in the mid-single digits, which equates to roughly $3.9 billion to $3.98 billion, and adjusted EBITDA will be between $760 million to $800 million, up 9% to 15% from 2023.

“As we look at the back half of the year, our results will reflect the continuing positive impact on an ad market recovery year material upside from political advertising, as well as the benefit of our ongoing focus on cost efficiencies,” said Pittman.

While iHeartMedia eked out a small improvement in the second quarter, two other radio companies that reported earnings in the last week continued their slides. Cumulus Media revenue fell 2.5% to $205 million as its net loss grew to $27.7 million from $1.1 million in the prior-year quarter. Townsquare Media revenue fell 2.5% and adjusted EBTDA dropped 8.3%.
