The Deals: UMG Pacts With Gen-AI Startup; Cosm Raises $250M for Its ‘Shared Reality’ Venues

Universal Music Group (UMG) reached a strategic agreement with ProRata.ai, a new company that enables generative artificial intelligence platforms to fractionally attribute and compensate content owners. Bill Gross, chairman of technology incubator Idealab Studio — which launched ProRata — will serve as CEO. ProRata’s technology allows generative AI platforms to attribute and share revenues on a per-use basis with content owners while preventing “unreliable content from driving AI answers,” according to a press release. In addition, ProRata is building a consumer AI answer engine set to launch this fall that will feature the company’s attribution technology.

“Current AI answer engines rely on shoplifted, plagiarized content,” Gross, the inventor of the pay-per-click monetization model underlying internet search, said in a statement. “This creates an environment where creators get nothing, and disinformation thrives. ProRata is pro-author, pro-artist and pro-consumer. Our technology allows creators to get credited and compensated while consumers get attributed, accurate answers. This solution will lead to a broader movement across the entire AI industry.”

In his own statement, UMG chairman/CEO Lucian Grainge said, “We are encouraged to see new entrepreneurial innovation set into motion in the Generative AI space guided by objectives that align with our own vision of how this revolutionary technology can be used ethically and positively while rewarding human creativity. Having reached a strategic agreement to help shape their efforts in the music category, we look forward to exploring all the potential ways UMG can work with ProRata to further advance our common goals and values.”

Along with UMG, ProRata has struck early agreements with media publishers including the Financial Times, The Atlantic and Fortune.

In describing the technology, the release reads: “ProRata’s technology analyzes AI output, measures the value of contributing content and calculates proportional compensation. The company uses a proprietary algorithmic approach to score and determine attribution. This attribution method enables copyright holders to share in the upside of generative AI by being credited and compensated for their material on a per-use basis. Unlike music or video streaming, generative AI pay-per-use requires fractional attribution as responses are generated using multiple content sources.”

ProRata is in “advanced discussions” with additional news publishers, authors, and media and entertainment companies. The company’s leadership team and board of directors include executives who have held senior roles at Microsoft, Google and Meta, as well as Michael Lang, the president of Lang Media Group and one of the founders of Hulu. Early investors include Revolution Ventures, Prime Movers Lab and Mayfield.

Immersive technology, media and entertainment company Cosm raised more than $250 million in funding to drive the growth of its “Shared Reality” venues — described in a press release as an “experience that seamlessly bridges the virtual and physical worlds by merging state-of-the-art visuals with the energy and excitement of the crowd and elevated food and beverage service.” The new funding round includes existing investors Steve Winn and Mirasol Capital and first-time investors Avenue Sports Fund led by Marc Lasry, Dan Gilbert‘s ROCK, Baillie Gifford, and David Blitzer‘s Bolt Ventures. Cosm will use the funds to scale, grow its technology and media business units, and speed up the development of more Cosm venues worldwide. The second Cosm venue is slated to open in Dallas later this year, with a third in Atlanta recently announced. “Cosm venues are a new paradigm in live sports, music, and artistic entertainment,” said Chris Evdaimon, investment manager at Baillie Gifford, in a statement. “The mesmerizing viewing experience guarantees the Cosm customer the best seats in the arena and the best viewing angle at any moment of the live event, at an affordable ticket price.”

HYBE Interactive Media (HYBE IM), the interactive media and games division of the storied K-pop company, raised $80 million in a round led by Makers Fund with participation from IMM Investment and parent company HYBE. The funds will be used to expand the company’s games publishing and development efforts, allowing HYBE IM to invest in more games, introduce them in global markets and bolster the division’s in-house development capabilities. HYBE IM’s previously-released titles include Rhythm Hive and BTS Island: In the SEOM. It’s also signed publishing contracts for Macovill’s OZ Re:write and Flint’s RPG Astra: Knights of Veda.

Believe acquired Doğan Music Company, Turkey’s largest independent record label, four years after purchasing a 60% majority stake in the company in 2020; it acquired the remaining 40% of the company for 38.3 million euros ($41.84 million). The transaction is pending approval by the competition regulator.

The U.K. office of Believe signed a global services deal with electronic music brand fabric. Under the agreement, fabric joins the client base of b:electronic, Believe’s electronic music imprint and part of the company’s label & artist solutions division. B:electronic will provide genre specialist label management, video and audience development, editorial and marketing partnerships internationally, and distribution for both catalog and new releases. Fabric’s labels include fabric Originals, fabric Records and Houndstooth, while a new imprint is slated to launch in the near future.

Taylor Swift’s London Shows Not Impacted by Vienna Threats, Officials Say

UK officials have announced that there is no indication that the terror threats before Taylor Swift’s now-cancelled shows in Vienna, Austria, will have any impact on her upcoming shows in London.

“There is nothing to indicate that the matters being investigated by the Austrian authorities will have an impact on upcoming events here in London,” a spokesperson for London’s Metropolitan Police said on Thursday (Aug. 8), per Reuters, adding, “The Met works closely with venue security teams and other partners to ensure there are appropriate security and policing plans in place. As always, we will continue to keep any new information under careful review.”

Swift is currently set to perform at London’s Wembley Stadium over five sold-out nights from August 15 to 20.

Earlier in the day, Associated Press reported that the main suspect in the case, a 19-year-old male, confessed that he planned to “kill as many people as possible” outside Ernst Happel Stadium, where Swift was scheduled to perform from August 8 to 10.

In a statement on Wednesday (Aug. 7), Barracuda Music, the concert promoters for the Austrian shows said, “With confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety. All tickets will be automatically refunded within the next 10 business days.”

The person identified as the main plotter reportedly quit his job and “conspicuously changed his appearance and adapted to IS [Islamic State] propaganda,” despite his North Macedonian roots. Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, Austria’s head of the Directorate of State Security and Intelligence, said the suspect wanted to use knives or homemade explosives to attack Swifties outside the stadium at the event, which was expected to draw more than 195,000 fans.

Authorities also said that I.S. and al-Qaida materials were found at the home of a second, 17-year-old Austrian suspect, who was reportedly recently hired by a company that provides services at the venue. Both suspects are currently in custody.

At press time, Swift had not commented on the incident. Billboard has reached out to the star’s reps for comment.

Caresha Please is returning to Revolt on Thursday night (Aug. 8), and ahead of the new season’s explosive episode, Yung Miami released a teaser where she gets emotional with her responses surrounding Diddy.

“This wasn’t easy, My Truth, My side, MY STORY But I’m ready for the smoke! TONIGHT @ 8pm EST on @REVOLTTV #CareshaPlease,” she wrote on X.

Yung Miami sat down with Saucy Santana to open up about remaining quiet throughout the jarring allegations made against Diddy when they were together. “I ain’t bring us this far to go backwards,” she said with tears streaming down her cheeks. “I said I was gon’ tell my truth.”

Fans have the 8 p.m. ET episode down as appointment television and are ready to hear from Yung Miami. “Chile lemme get my blunt ready for tonight,” one person wrote. Another fan asked: “Omg this the first time i’ve seen you crying?”

Diddy and Yung Miami sparked dating rumors in 2021 and appeared to be on-and-off over the next couple of years with their relationship before splitting for good in 2023.

Yung Miami — born Caresha Brownlee — was actually named in a civil lawsuit filed by Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones Jr. in February when he claimed that Miami was a sex worker for Diddy and brought “pink cocaine” to her.

Weeks later, Miami’s former City Girls partner JT denied ever having Diddy or Yung Miami supply her with drugs. “First of all I was in the half way house being drug tested EVERY night I went in! I explained this YEARS ago I NEVER did cocaine & never will it actually destroyed my family,” she wrote to X in March. “Y’all get on her making jokes about shit for shits & giggles & don’t know ppl post trauma! Stop playing with me! PLEASE.”

Combs has been laying low since being hit with a sprawling lawsuit by hisexCassie in November, which they settled less than 24 hours later. In the months since, a litany of sexual abuse lawsuits have been filed against Diddy. His Los Angeles and Miami homes were raided by federal agents in March, but no arrests were made.

Diddy has maintained his innocence and along with his lawyers has vehemently denied the allegations made against him.

A New Jelly Roll Song Will Be the ESPN College Football Anthem for 2024-25 Season

CMA Award winner and four-time Billboard Country Airplay chart-topping artist Jelly Roll will soon see his new song serve as the music anthem for ESPN’s college football coverge during the 2024-2025 season on ESPN platforms, starting Saturday, Aug. 24.

Jelly Roll’s new single “Get By,” which will also be featured on his upcoming new album, serves as the soundtrack for ESPN’s season-long college football coverage across ESPN networks and ABC. This marks the 11th season that ESPN has partnered with an artist to create an anthem for ESPN’s college football coverage. Previous artists ESPN partnered with include Post Malone, Fall Out Boy, Imagine Dragons, Yungblud, Lauren Alaina and Thirty Seconds to Mars.

Curtis Friends, ESPN vice president of marketing, said in a statement, “There’s a powerful connection between music and college football and for more than a decade, the ESPN college football music anthem has been integral to the promotion of the sport while its release has marked the unofficial start to the season. Jelly Roll is a talented, award-winning artist whose music speaks to the passion of college football fans across the country, and we’re excited ‘Get By’ will soundtrack the sport all season long.”

Trending on Billboard

The college football officially kicks off on Aug. 24, as ACC rivals Florida State and Georgia Tech face off starting at noon ET on ESPN at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Additionally, College GameDay Built by The Home Depot will make its season debut, onsite, prior to the game.

Jelly Roll has been a ubiquitous persona of late, including taking part in this year’s WWE SummerSlam on Aug. 3, participating in a recent Nashville television taping honoring the late country entertainer Toby Keith, teaming with MGK for the new song and music video “Lonely Road,” and even offering a surprise show in Tampa, Florida last month after fellow country artist Morgan Wallen was forced to postpone his stadium show due to illness.

Jelly Roll also recently extended his headlining Beautifully Broken Tour again, adding even more tour dates to the trek.

Talking Heads ‘Stop Making Sense’ Tribute Album Makes Chart-Topping Debut

Everyone’s Getting Involved, the star-studded tribute album celebrating Talking HeadsStop Making Sense concert film, debuts atop Billboard’s Compilation Albums chart (dated Aug. 10) thanks to the set’s arrival on CD and vinyl. The effort boasts acts such as Miley Cyrus, Lorde and Paramore covering songs performed by Talking Heads in its celebrated 1984 film Stop Making Sense.

First released as a digital download and via streaming services in May, Everyone’s Getting Involved arrives at No. 1 on the Compilation Albums tally after its July 26 release on CD and vinyl. Combined, all configurations of the album, digital and physical, sold a little over 2,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 1 according to Luminate – with nearly all the sales from its CD and vinyl formats.

The Compilation Albums chart ranks the top-selling compilation albums of the week in the U.S., by traditional album sales.

A restored version of the Stop Making Sense film premiered on Sept. 11, 2023, at the Toronto International Film Festival before garnering a general theatrical release later that month. On Aug. 18, 2023, a remastered edition of the Stop Making Sense soundtrack was released, boasting the complete concert for the first time.

On Everyone’s Getting Involved, the cover songs are ordered in the same sequence as they are performed in the Stop Making Sense film. Among the tracks are “Psycho Killer” (covered by Miley Cyrus), “Heaven” (The National), “Burning Down the House” (Paramore), “Once In a Lifetime” (Kevin Abstract), “Genius of Love” (Toro y Moi featuring Brijean) and “Take Me to the River” (Lorde).

Meanwhile, Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense soundtrack returns to Billboard’s charts (dated Aug. 10) after it was repressed on vinyl on July 26 (nearly a year after its 2023 reissue). The set re-enters the Soundtracks chart at No. 8, Vinyl Albums at No. 7, Indie Store Album Sales at No. 3 and Top Album Sales at No. 16.

How Many Times Has Ye Been Sued Over Sampling? Here’s Every Lawsuit

With claims of uncleared samples back in the news, Billboard dug up every case that’s been filed against the controversial rapper. Spoiler alert: It’s a lot.

Everyone in the music industry knows that Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) has been sued repeatedly over allegations that he sampled copyrighted music without permission. But how many lawsuits has he actually faced? Billboard decided to find out.

Just hours after Ye’s brand new Vultures 2 dropped on Saturday, he was already facing claims that the new album featured uncleared music. In a social media post, electronic music artist Geoff Barrow shared a clip of Ye’s song “Field Trip” above the words “not again” – seemingly an accusation that the track featured a sample from the song “Machine Gun” by Barrow’s band Portishead.

It’s currently unclear whether Barrow or anyone else will take legal action against Ye over the new song. But if he did, he would hardly be the first to do so.

Over the course of his career, federal court records show that the rapper has been sued at least 14 times over claims of unlicensed sampling (the use of a copyrighted sound recording) or interpolating (the use of a copyrighted composition) in his songs, with nine of those cases coming since 2019 alone. And that’s not counting cases where others have been sued over his songs, like a case filed in 2012 against Roc-A-Fella Records, or a recent case against UMG filed by members of prog rock band King Crimson, nor allegations that didn’t result in a lawsuit, like Ozzy Osbourne’s accusations earlier this year.

To keep it all straight, Billboard dug up the court records from every case against Ye. Here they are:

Apparently, Party feels really good about the music they’ve been making. The singer recently caught up with Awaiz Punjani, and when he was asked to name his favorite song that he’s done with Drake, Party answered, “The one we doing right now – all 15 we doing right now.”

Drake seemingly teased new music between the two last month when he wished Party a happy birthday in his Instagram Story. “More life to the late night serenader 6 side sound creator owl gang crusader melodies that persuade her baby making music to put her in labour none greater PartyNextDoor stay tuned real soon,” he wrote.

Awaiz also asked what his favorite song to make on his latest album was, to which Party answered with “No Chill” and “Real Woman.” In March, his label boss posted the latter’s single art on Instagram ahead of it’s release with the caption, “The real goat is back this Friday.”

While there’s no official release date yet, at least fans know to expect at least 15 tracks of new Drake and Party music.

The Toronto rapper recently made headlines this week by dumping 100GBs of content onto the internet.

Bunnie XO Opens Up About ‘Death Scare’ After Misdiagnosed Aneurysm: ‘It Made Me Appreciate Life So Much’

Bunnie XO is opening up about a terrifying “death scare” that she went through recently.

The 44-year-old model shared on the newest episode of her Dumb Blonde podcast that she sought medical advice after suffering with frequent headaches. “I noticed that it was kinda, like, after I would eat certain foods. I don’t know if it was, like, high in salts or something because I don’t eat bad,” she explained, noting that she follows a healthy diet because she’s “trying so hard to just rewind all the … drug-induced trauma I did to my body, and alcohol trauma I did to my body growing up.”

Bunnie, who is married to Grammy-nominated star Jelly Roll, revealed that a TikTok a friend sent to her about aneurysms gave her a “panic attack,” which prompted her to reach out to her doctor at 2 a.m. to book an MRI. “My mom had an aneurysm, and it ruptured. And she almost died,” she explained of her history with the blood vessel condition.

When she received the results, Bunnie said she was told that “they might have found an aneurysm on your carotid artery,” adding that the news was “one of my biggest fears coming to fruition.”

She continued, “There was just so many things that went through my mind. And I instantly just hit my knees and started praying. I bawled my eyes out. I cried so hard, I pulled a muscle in my neck. I cried for three days.”

She ultimately went for another scan, which led to a diagnosis of a “two-millimeter aneurysm on your carotid artery,” which are the arteries located on the sides of the neck. However, Bunnie sought another opinion and went to a neurologist, who told her that it actually wasn’t an aneurysm.

“He said, ‘I wish you had an aneurysm so I could fix your headaches.’ And I was just like, ’Hey, homie. Slow your roll.’ I was like, ‘I’m good,’” she recalled. The podcaster then went to a vascular surgeon, who confirmed that she didn’t have an aneurysm.

She explained that the doctor told her, “‘I am clearing you.’ He said, ‘It’s a blood vessel that matches on the other side of your carotid artery on the other end.’ And he said, ‘This was just one of these things where I get to deliver good news.’ He said, ‘If you wanna go play tackle football, you can.’ ”

Bunnie has since found a silver lining from the difficult situation. “It made me appreciate life so much. And, like, I know it sounds dramatic, but … it just really made me realize that, like, none of this s— f—ing matters, man,” she shared. “Family and the people that you love and the people that you surround yourself with every day is all that f—ing matters, dude. I snuggled up so much to my husband these past few days.”
