Pharrell Postpones Something in the Water Festival to 2025: ‘It Just Isn’t Ready Yet’

There’s nothing in the water this year. Pharrell has announced that his Something in the Water festival in Virginia Beach will no longer be taking place in October and has been postponed to April 2025.

While pre-sale tickets still went on sale on Friday (Sept. 13) and the festival’s lineup was set to be revealed — the latter never happened — Pharrell stepped in to pen a letter to fans revealing that Something in the Water had been delayed once again until April 2025 because “it just isn’t ready yet.”

“Dearest Virginia, I love you with all my heart,” he began. “Nobody loves you more than I do. Virginia doesn’t deserve better, Virginia deserves THE BEST. So SOMETHING IN THE WATER has to match that. It just isn’t ready yet. That’s why we as a team have decided that we must postpone this year’s SOMETHING IN THE WATER festival that was due to take place in October.”

Trending on Billboard

P continued: “This is not a Pharrell festival, this is the state of Virginia’s festival so it has to be the best. Virginia made me, and I want to honor it with as much love as it’s shown me my entire life. And you know me, everywhere I go it’s VA.”

Fans who paid for tickets already by debit/credit card will be refunded through their point of purchase. Those who waited on line to purchase tickets in-person can receive a refund at the Veterans United Home Loan Amphitheater ticket office. Those who bought tickets will have first access when the new dates are announced for next year.

Pharrell added: “I am so grateful to our amazing sponsors and the city for their continued support and trust in us to get this right, and that time is April 2025.”

Something in the Water was originally slated for April 2024 before being pushed to October, which will now take place when we turn the calendar to 2025.

April 2023’s SITW festival was a three-day soiree in Virginia Beach, Va. and saw headlining performances from Kid Cudi, Lil Wayne, The Clipse, Summer Walker, Grace Jones, Lil Uzi Vert, Kehlani and more.

Fyre Fest II is Scheduled for Next Spring, Says Convicted Fraudster Billy McFarland

Billy McFarland, the convicted fraudster behind the disastrous Fyre Festival of 2017, has announced new dates for the long-awaited follow-up to the often-mocked Bahamian influencer event that landed him in prison for four years, owing victims more than $26 million in restitution.

Earlier this week, McFarland took to the Today Show to “announce” the new dates for Fyre Fest II, which he now says will take place April 25-28 on “a private island off the Caribbean coast of Mexico.” By most counts, however, this is the third or fourth version of a sequel to the event McFarland has broadcast to his followers. McFarland has been hyping up a follow-up to the disastrous 2017 Bahamas festival since he went to prison in late 2018, changing the date for his redemption-style event several times while carefully removing or updating past references to Fyre II each time he updates his social media sites.

According to court documents, McFarland has been writing up a plan for the event — first called PYRT festival — since he was incarcerated at Elkton Federal Correctional Institute in Ohio on charges of fraud and lying to the FBI. McFarland immediately begin hawking the event on TikTok when he got out of prison in mid-2022 with a scavenger hunt. McFarland had fans looking through empty bottles by late November of that year for free tickets to an event he’d eventually rebrand as Fyre Fest II in August of 2023, where he claimed to have placed 100 tickets on sale for $499 a pop and immediately sold out of them, which would have generated nearly $50,000 in revenue.

Trending on Billboard

The date for that event was scheduled for late 2024 and at one point McFarland bragged there were more people signing up for his event than buying tickets for Coachella. Besides the first 100 tickets allegedly sold to Fyre II, fans have only been able to “sign up” for tickets to the sequel event, clicking through a form-style website where they are encouraged to apply for the opportunity to buy tickets to Fyre Festival II, with prices ranging from $1,400 to $1.1 million. At this point, fans can’t buy tickets for the event — they can only apply to attend.

McFarland detailed the venture to both the Wall Street Journal and NBC News, saying that he hopes to gather about 3,000 people for the event and also promises “an incredible production company who’s handling everything from soup to nuts” for the fest.

“We have the chance to embrace this storm and really steer our ship into all the chaos that has happened, and if it’s done well, I think Fyre has a chance to be this annual festival that really takes over the festival industry,” McFarland told NBC.

McFarland has not avoided legal trouble since leaving prison. Last year he was served a civil summons, which claimed he ripped off an investor who gave him $740,000 for his new venture. An attorney for 54-year-old Jonathan Taylor of New York — who met McFarland while both were serving prison sentences at Elkton — said Taylor struck an agreement with McFarland and his business partner, Michael Falb (also named as a defendant), in which they allegedly offered him one-third equity in the venture, PYRT Technologies, in exchange for a $740,000 investment. Taylor claims McFarland and Falb then reneged on the deal by refusing to grant him the equity they promised or to return the money despite his demands that they do so. A judge later ruled that Taylor needed to refile the lawsuit to push the case forward.

McFarland has managed to stay busy with other ventures since leaving prison. In May, McFarland won a heavily hyped martial arts fight against a social media influencer, defeating the heavily favored crypto YouTuber Justin “Jchains” Custardo via TKO during the main event of Karate Combat’s Influencer Fight Club series at the Consensus conference in Austin, Texas.

McFarland has also launched the PYRT marketing agency and been heavily involved in the promotion of the song “ONBOA47RD,” a pro-Donald Trump rap song from Fivio Foreign and Kodak Black.

Lauren London Says She ‘Still Feels Like a Mess’ Since Losing Boyfriend Nipsey Hussle

Lauren London sat down with Radhi Devlukia on the A Really Good Cry podcast and talked about how she’s been handling grief since her boyfriend Nipsey Hussle was murdered in 2019.

“I still feel like a mess, that’s the thing,” she said of how she’s been dealing with his death. “I guess I have to ask my friends how far I’ve come because I still genuinely feel like I have not arrived anywhere.” Adding, “I feel like I’m really heavy a lot, but again, I have to counter that to just, like, the grace of God, because if it was up to me, I would be sliding in here on my stomach, but I also don’t want to take away from the work that I’ve done from then until now. So, I don’t wanna do that, ’cause I’m good at doing that.”

She credited her kids and her community for helping her “push through” the pain. “God just placed people in my life that can kinda just usher me in and teach me and guide me. I always say the prayer of strangers held me up.”

London also talked about how she’s been teaching her two sons about dealing with losing Nipsey. “It’s so different with both of them, because one’s 14, the other one’s 7, so you know. I’m always, like, a container for whatever emotion they have,” she explained. “I’m just like, ‘It’s OK to feel all these things, you know? I’m holding it for you, I feel you, I understand, I hear you.’” Adding, “But also, playing his music. I’m always telling them to journal as well, like, write him a letter, tell him how you feel.”

Earlier in the interview, London told Devlukia that their love was “intentional, pure and safe” and talked about what she learned from him. “All the things he was saying to me made more sense after he left,” she said. “I’m such in my cave and a homebody, that he would be like, ‘People really need to hear from you. You have a lot of truth you should share.’ He saw me like my kids see me.”

She added, “But when he was here, just the reliance on God. He really relied on God, he truly believed in himself, he really did not believe in ‘Somebody else has the keys to your destiny as much as you and your creator does.’ And authenticity is something you can’t buy, it’s something that you can’t fake, it’s something that you can’t put on.”

On the fifth anniversary of his death, London shared a tribute on Instagram. “If you know me You know March is always tough for me 31 days of holding my breath,” she wrote. “This day decided to fall on Easter Sunday this 2024 Interesting…. considering your name #GodWillRise Energy never dies…. I love you. Eternal.”

Hear Exclusive Desert Hearts 2024 Sets From The Desert Hearts Crew, Doc Martin, Öona Dahl & More

This past July, the Desert Hearts crew road-tripped out to Arizona for their first edition of the festival outside California.

After being bounced around SoCal a bit after launching the festival near San Diego more than a decade ago, then moving to Riverside County in 2022, then to downtown Los Angeles in 2023, over the July 4 weekend, the team assembled in what seems to be a viable new home at the Playa Ponderosa ranch near Flagstaff, Arizona, throwing the festival in partnership with the Phoenix-based Walter Productions.

For this edition, Desert Hearts also went back to its origins, returning to its original single stage format for its 72 hours of house and techno. The lineup included Anja Schneider, Ardalan, Coco & Breezy, Rinzen, Life on Planets, Lubelski, Mary Droppinz, Walker & Royce and many more, including, of course, the Deserts Hearts founders/house DJs, each of whom played separately and then together for a closing set.

They continued by saying that “The last five years have been incredibly challenging for DH since losing our long-time home during the pandemic. Canceling the 2023 camping festival was the hardest thing we’ve had to do since founding Desert Hearts. But it was your resilience and unwavering support that kept us going.”

Rick Ross Might Be Open to Squashing Beef With Drake, But ‘I Ain’t Losing No Sleep’

Rick Ross sounds like he’s open to reconciling with Drake.

During an appearance on Caresha Please with Yung Miami, Ross talked about the infamous incident in Vancouver and his relationship with Drake.

When asked if all it would take is a phone call between the former collaborators, Ross said he would maybe consider it. “I don’t know, it depend on how I feel. If I had Luc Belaire [champagne] already that morning, it may be a good day,” Ross told the former City Girl. “If I haven’t, you never f—ing know, you know what I’m saying? Because that’s how the game go, it’s just like that. F— ’em or whatever it is. But other than that? I ain’t losin’ no sleep over none of this sh–.”

He was even vaguer when discussing how his beef with the Toronto rapper went as far as it did. “Everybody doesn’t understand … the opportunities they have. Some n—as take sh– for granted. I don’t know what it is,” he said. “Everybody that’s been loyal to me or been down with me, you know, that’s something that I extend for the longevity of time.”

Adding, “I just think, when you’re not really from the streets and don’t really understand the way certain things work sometimes, you could take sh– for granted. Then two months later, sh– be lookin’ crazy for you. … This sh– could really just be a phone call. A lot of this sh– could be a misunderstanding, but when you jump out there? I don’t know, homie.”

They then talked about the unfortunate brawl backstage after Ross performed in Vancouver where he said the friends he usually travels with weren’t able to make the trip. “All my homies that [usually travel] with me, them n—as couldn’t come in ’cause of their felonies,” he told Miami. “If I would’ve just had two or three more of my homies with me, we would’ve stripped them n—as out their drawers and socks.”

Labels, Publishers and Streamers Lead Music Stocks’ Rebound After Tumultuous Prior Week

Live Nation, Warner Music Group and Spotify helped lead a music stocks rebound this week as global markets recovered from a disastrous prior week

The Billboard Global Music Index gained 3.2% to 1,800.75 to retake nearly two-thirds of the previous week’s losses. Last week, just three of the index’s 20 stocks were gainers. This week, 11 stocks finished in positive territory while nine lost value. The seven multi-sector companies — recorded music, publishing and agencies — had an average gain of 2.3%. Six streaming companies had an average gain of 2.6%.

Major indexes also posted gains after last week’s downturn. In the United States, the Nasdaq jumped 6.0% to 17,683.98 and the S&P 500 climbed 4.0% to 5,626.02. In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 rose 1.1% to 8,273.09. South Korea’s KOSPI composite index improved 1.2% to 2,575.41. China’s Shanghai Composite Index was an exception, dropping 2.2% to 2,704.09, its lowest close since Feb. 5, 2024.

Trending on Billboard

Concert promoter Live Nation jumped 6.5% to $98.82 on Friday, its best closing price since $101.40 on May 22. CEO Michael Rapino gave investors a convincing narrative about Live Nation’s past, present and future at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference on Tuesday (Sept. 10). Speaking about the potential for growth outside of the U.S., Rapino talked about taking the model used in Austin, where it built the Moody Center (in partnership with Oak View Group) and is getting “25-plus-percent return on capital.”

While the U.S. is filled with arenas because of basketball’s popularity, soccer-dominant Europe and South America don’t have the same infrastructure, Rapino explained. Growing a presence in those areas means building the venues, which provides better profits than being a venue operator. And it can be done more affordably than the cost of many arenas in the U.S. “We’re not building a billion-dollar Chase Center [the home of the Golden State Warriors basketball team in San Francisco],” Rapino said. “We’re building a $300 million-$400 million music venue, and we can get a great return on capital and expand the market. So that’s our greatest opportunity.”

After SiriusXM merged with Liberty Media’s tracking stock, Liberty SiriusXM, the new stock — also trading under the SIRI ticket — finished closed at $24.51, down 10.2%, after taking into account a 1-for-10 stock split. SiriusXM initiated post-merger trading at $25.25 and rose 2.6% on Tuesday before reaching a high of $29.05 on Wednesday. The company said the merger of SiriusXM and Liberty SiriusXM stocks was done to simplify the capital structure and support the company’s future growth.

In its first press release following the merger with Liberty SiriusXM tracking stock, SiriusXM provided updated free cash flow guidance of $1 billion for 2024, a $200 million drop from the guidance provided on Aug. 1. The $200 million change reflects about $70 million of closing costs and incremental interest and about $130 million related to “historical, year-to-date outflows at Liberty SiriusXM Holdings Inc. prior to the closing of the transaction.” The company left unchanged its guidance for revenue ($8.75 billion) and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization ($2.7 billion).

Spotify gained 4.7% to $338.01, erasing most of its 5.9% loss two weeks prior. On Thursday, Guggenheim increased its estimate for fourth quarter monthly average users and average revenue per user and raised its third quarter gross margin estimate. Analysts spoke with a publishing executive who had positive things to say about Spotify’s audiobook offering and its positive impact on the publishing business. Guggenheim maintained its “buy” rating and $420 price target.

Multi-sector companies performed especially well this week. Warner Music Group gained 5.1% to $29.02 after Tigress Financial cut its price target to $44 from $52 on Thursday but retained a “buy” rating on the stock. Reservoir Media rose 5.3% to $7.72. Universal Music Group improved 2.9% to 23.60 euros ($26.17). Most K-pop stocks rebounded after a rough week. Although HYBE lost 1.0%, YG Entertainment gained 4.9%,SM Entertainment improved 3.2% and JYP Entertainment rose 1.7%.

A trio of streaming companies were among the week’s worst performers. China’s Cloud Music fell 4.7% to 91.95 HKD ($11.79). China’s top music streamer, Tencent Music Entertainment, fell 6.7% to $9.52. Abu Dhabi-based Anghami dropped 7.8% to $0.83.

Ariana Grande’s Boyfriend Ethan Slater Finalizes Divorce With Lilly Jay: Report

Ethan Slater and Lilly Jay are now legally divorced, TMZ reports.

The couple separated last year, after which the Broadway actor began dating his Wicked co-star Ariana Grande.

According to TMZ, Slater and his high school sweetheart — who share a young son — reached a settlement that was approved by a judge as of Thursday. Like all divorces in the state of New York, the terms of the agreement are sealed.

Billboard has reached out to Slater’s reps for confirmation.

The news comes about a year and two months after reports first emerged of the Broadway actor’s romance with the “Yes, And?” singer, whom he met on the set of Jon M. Chu’s Wicked films. A few days after news of his relationship with Grande surfaced, Slater filed to divorce Jay on July 26, 2023, after five years of marriage.

Trending on Billboard

Meanwhile, Jay told Page Six at the time: “[Ariana’s] the story really. Not a girl’s girl. My family is just collateral damage.”

The following September, Grande filed to legally end her marriage to luxury realtor Dalton Gomez two years after they tied the knot, logging their date of separation as Feb. 20, 2023, in the court documents. The Victorious alum and Slater have since kept their romance low-key, though the couple have been seen out in public together a number of times. In April, Grande supported Slater at his final Broadway performance of Spamalot, and in June, the pair attended the Stanley Cup finals together.

As for the public scrutiny she’s faced for her relationship over the past year, the “7 Rings” star has remained diplomatic. Ahead of the release of her Billboard 200-topping album Eternal Sunshine, she acknowledged on The Zach Sang Show that the negative attention presented “an insatiable frustration, an inexplicable hellish feeling with watching people misunderstand the people you love, and you.”

Doja Cat Explains Why ‘Scarlet’ Is an ‘Angry Project’: I’m ‘Squaring Up With Everyone & Defending Myself’

Doja Cat aired out a lot grievances on her 2023 album Scarlet.

And in a new interview with Jack Harlow for Present Space, the “Paint the Town Red” rapper explained why tapping into her own fury was such an important part of her creative process. “Scarlet is a very, to put it simply, quite an angry project,” she said in the conversation published Thursday.

“I think the point of that album was to showcase anger and how it processes through my mind, but also it’s about coming to your own defense and love,” Doja continued. “It’s sort of my ‘Why I oughta!’ moment of squaring up with everyone and defending myself, telling myself that I’m here for me, and not just for everybody else’s enjoyment.”

Released in September last year, Scarlet followed 2021’s hit-spawning Planet Her. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top Rap Albums chart.

Trending on Billboard

While speaking to the “First Class” rapper, Doja also opened up about why she meticulously vets who she does and doesn’t follow on social media. “I think that as people, we are not ready, or not fully prepared, or fully evolved, as far as the Internet,” the Grammy winner said. “So when we see things on the Internet, there’s things that we think we’re in control of, that we’re not in control of. And when we see people having a good time, but we’re bed rotting, not having the best day, and we scroll and see something that’s not an artistic expression, but somebody doing something we wish we were doing, I think that we don’t take into account what that does to our brains.”

“I know that I just shouldn’t follow people who aren’t going to be creative, because that’s more mentally stimulating to me in a positive way, to follow people who are creating something new,” she continued. “It’s a safe haven for me as opposed to a place where I am watching people either pretend to be happy or genuinely be happy. I don’t want to use my phone in order to witness people’s happiness which I’d rather experience in reality.”
