Every month, Billboard Latin and Billboard Español editors spotlight a group of rising artists whose music we love. Think “diamantes en bruto,” or “diamonds in the rough.” These are newcomers who have yet to impact the mainstream — but whose music excites us, and who we believe our readers should make a point to discover.

This Ecuadorian singer-songwriter has been making waves on social media with his videos. He used this year’s conference not only to meet new people and forge connections but also to showcase his latest single, “La Sin Sentimientos,” featuring Blanko. Artist: Dany Deglein

Country: Bolivia

Why They Should Be On Your Radar: Dany Deglein, a Bolivian artist with a decade of solo career success in his native country, is reinventing his music after a transformative sabbatical into eco-tourism, according to a Mexican publication. His roots in the music of his native surroundings are evident in his pop fusions that feature traditional Bolivian instruments, like the charango. A standout track, “Mala,” celebrates this instrument — a small Andean guitar-like piece that usually has an armadillo shell for its body — in a festive song about empowerment after breakups. Deglein, who Billboard Español connected with during Latin Music week, is actively involved in humanitarian causes, utilizing his music as a force for social change. Deglein’s narrative and sound are both poignant and playful, securing his place as an artist to watch. — ISABELA RAYGOZA

After kicking off its music career, Diez 4tro unleashed three albums: Consejos de la Vida (2022), Blanco (2023), and Rojo (2023). In the midst of attending his first-ever Billboard Latin Music Week, “Moreno” dropped his latest single “Dile,” which captures a romantic corrido tune about falling in love with a girl and encouraging her to tell her parents that they will get married. — JESSICA ROIZ

Artist: L+U

Country: Venezuela / Italy

Why They Should Be on Your Radar: Formed by Italian songstress Luisa Maggioni and Venezuelan artist Claudio Urdaneta (who also has German and Salvadoran roots), L+U is a husband and wife duo that goes beyond just a talented couple. Maggioni—who was a chorist for Phil Collins and participated in “The Voice Italy”—is a survivor of anorexia. Urdaneta—a studied musician who toured the world with Michael Franti & Spearhead—battled with depression when he migrated to the U.S. Today, after meeting in Miami and getting married in 2022, the duo is creating Spanish pop-rock music with purpose. “We channel our life experiences, along with our love for each other, into positive music that explores themes of mental health, resilience, and love,” the duo tells Billboard. “Our hope is that our songs can add something meaningful to the lives of our listeners.” — J.R.

Artist: LI-C

Country: Cuba

Why They Should Be on Your Radar: Cuban-born artist LI-C is a studied singer and musician, who after taking vocal classes and learning to play the clarinet, became a music professor herself. In Cuba, she formed part of a musical group, having the opportunity to take her talent to Asia. Now residing in Miami, the artist born Lisandra Rondon officially launched her music career this year with her debut album Mariposa (Butterfly). Sonically, the 12-track set helmed by hitmakers La Companioni and Nando Pro, laces LI-C’s captivating vocals with fusions of reggaeton, afrobeat, salsa, and pop. Lyrically, she honors her album’s name, singing about personal growth, self-love, and happiness. LI-C took full advantage at her first Billboard Latin Music Week, where she attended with her managers, networked with her colleagues, learned from this year’s panelists, and even asked a question during the “Billboard Ask Anything” panel. — J.R.

Artist: Lulita (Alexandra Kirtchuk)

Country: Argentina/U.S.

Why They Should Be on Your Radar: With a privileged lyrical voice, Lulita — a New Yorker of Argentine-Israeli descent — fuses the sounds of her ancestors to create inspiring music. Graduated from the renowned LaGuardia High School, she studied international relations before moving to Buenos Aires to learn tango and folklore. With influences as eclectic as the Gipsy Kings, Buena Vista Social Club, Mercedes Sosa and Gilberto Gil, Lulita presents a truly interesting offering. She will release on Nov. 22 her first EP, Alexandra, with songs of the Argentine folklore and fragments of family interviews in Argentina and Jewish prayers in Israel. Artist: Milo Campos

He started his career as a songwriter for various artists, including Banda Los Sebastianes, Edwin Luna, and Luis “Potro” Caballero, among others in Mexico. Known for his unique storytelling through music, he released his solo album Lotería this year. This eight-track concept LP is inspired by the traditional Mexican game of Lotería, with each track corresponding to a specific card name, such as “El Valiente,” “La Sirena,” and “El Borracho.” The album features a blend of regional Mexican music, including huapango, trap, salsa, norteño, and even reggaetón, all written and produced by Milo himself.

Song For Your Playlist: “El Borracho”

Artist: Nathalie Blain

Country: Ecuador

Why They Should Be on Your Radar: Nathalie Blain traveled from her native Ecuador to Miami to introduce her music project to colleagues and industry leaders. The emerging artist and professional dancer kicked off her singing career in 2023 and counts with five singles up to now. She’s also opened shows for Greeicy and Jorge Celedon. From her debut single “Si Te Hubieras Quedado” to her latest collaboration, “Contigo” with Andres Molina, Blain easily navigates different genres such as bolero, R&B, cumbia, and reggaetón. In her lyrics, she opens up about personal experiences that broke her but also shaped her. “I spent a lot of time repressing my emotions until music found me again and resurrected me little by little,” her Spotify profile notes. “Through music I let myself feel, I give myself over to the feeling and the emotion, I don’t resist and that frees me.” — J.R.

Artist: Nik Salazar

Country: Colombia

Why They Should Be on Your Radar: I briefly met Nik last year during Billboard Latin Week 2023, and then in Puerto Rico, I had the opportunity to check out more on his music further at an event for Premios Juventud. I’ve been following his recent releases, and we caught up again during this year’s Billboard Latin Music Week. During that time, he met new colleagues and gained more insights into his career while continuously working on his music and projects. Nik started writing at the age of 11 and studied music in Bogotá, Colombia where he has been honing his songwriting skills over the years. One thing I’ve noticed about him, in addition to his incredible talent and charming charisma, is his determination to advocate for his project. His latest work, “Los Santos,” beautifully blends sensual pop with an urban touch, showcasing his sweet voice. — I.F.

Artist: Pedro El Rapero

Country: Venezuela

Why They Should Be on Your Radar: Without a doubt, Pedro El Rapero left a mark at Billboard Latin Music Week by creating an unforgettable moment during J Balvin’s Superstar Q&A. The 13-year-old took the stage during the panel to show the Colombian artist his rap skills, performing his infectious song “Retro 1.” Hailing from the city of Barquisimeto, the youngster already performed at the Poliedro de Caracas during a concert of El Alfa, a moment that opened doors for other performances in Venezuela, Argentina and Guatemala. A rapper but also a singer, and more than 250,000 followers on Instagram, he has released the five-song EP Alegría (2023) and has a new single titled “Hasta el final.” — S.R.A.

Song For Your Playlist: “Retro 1”

Artist: Steffania Uttaro

Country: Venezuela

Why They Should Be on Your Radar: The 27-year-old singer-songwriter from Venezuela has already made some waves in the music industry, particularly in Argentina, where she currently resides. She was a semi-finalist on the third season of La Voz Argentina in 2021. Now, she’s looking to branch out and expand her reach, which is what led her to travel to the 2024 Billboard Latin Music Week. Most recently, she released her debut album, titled Amor del Bueno y Del Otro También, which showcases her light yet wide-ranging vocals, and her versatile musical palette dabbling in ballads, pop and more rhythmic styles. — GRISELDA FLORES

Song For Your Playlist: “Veneno”

Artist: Zandú

Country: Venezuela

Why They Should Be on Your Radar: With a pop-urban sound and a pleasant voice and cadence, Colombian-Venezuelan singer and songwriter Zandú achieved notoriety in 2020 with the song alluding to the pandemic “Qué Cosa Tan Loca,” after his concerts from the balcony for his neighbors lead him to appear on different international news programs (as documented in its music video). But Zandú started much earlier, singing at folkloric music festivals and also in a salsa and merengue band. Born in Pregonero, Táchira, and currently living between Venezuela and Switzerland, he has released singles including “Combinas Conmigo” with Felipe Peláez and the song about mental health “Esta Me La Dedico,” as well as an EP titled Exhala in 2022. His most recent release is Error de Lectura, a six-song set in which he fuses contemporary sounds with music from the 90s.— S.R.A.

Cheetos’ Deja Tu Huella Program Leaves Its Mark on Local Miami Students | Billboard News

Presented by Cheetos

Students at Miami Dade College received career advice, access to workshops and inspiration from J Balvin during Cheetos’ Community College Tour as part of their Deja Tu Huella program.

Narrator:

Cheetos left its mark on Miami when its Deja Tu Huella tour touched down at a local college, with some help from a Latin superstar. During the Deja Tu Huella tour stop at Miami Dade College’s Wolfson campus, students enjoyed career workshops led by Deja Tu Huella ambassadors, and received a special message from J Balvin. After all, the superstar knows a thing or two about reaching your full potential.

J Balvin:

Hola mi gente, Miami Dade College aqui. J Balvin, thanks to Cheetos, my fingertips are officially part of Deja Tu Huella. I come straight up from Medellin, Colombia to tell you to keep studying and never stop chasing your dreams.

Narrator:

So it was only fitting he teamed up with Cheetos. The partnership is intended to help promote education among the Latino community and nurture the next generation of trailblazers. In addition to the special greeting, students also received career advice, and they even partook in a culinary competition where the winner was awarded a scholarship, and it wouldn’t be a Deja Tu Huella celebration if there wasn’t enough free Cheetos swag to go around. The event also had food trucks, photo booths, tons of music, and of course, plenty of Cheetos. The students left the experience feeling inspired to leave their mark for more on Cheetos’ Deja Tu Huella tour campaign, head to billboard.com.

Inside the Newly Renovated Wolf Trap, the Only National Park That Exists Solely to Host Concerts

When hearing the term “national park,” most people probably don’t think of Trey Anastasio noodling a guitar solo or Nas performing “N.Y. State of Mind.” But at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, both of those things, and much more, happened over the summer.

Located in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Vienna, Va., Wolf Trap is the only national park that’s also a performing arts center and exists solely to be a venue. The park’s centerpiece, the 7,000-capacity amphitheater Filene Center, hosts more than 70 musical performances each season, the 2024 edition of which ended last month with a two-night run by James Taylor.

This season, the park also unveiled a collection of new and updated facilities. Because it’s on designated federal land, this new construction was mandated to aesthetically merge with the park’s pre-existing structures and overall feel. Staff even meticulously documented the areas being refurbished to expand Wolf Trap’s historical record.

Trending on Billboard

“Everything we’re building is going to be owned by the American people,” says Wolf Trap president/CEO Arvind Manocha. “There’s a lot of checks and balances to make sure that what we’re doing is permanent and meets a standard that’s consistent with the ideals of the way federal land is managed.”

Construction of the public areas started the day after the 2023 season’s final show, with improvements to seating, picnic pavilions, artist areas and more. The centerpiece of the construction is Meadow Commons, a stately, wood-paneled facility that opened in May. Replacing a concessions stand as old as the 53-year-old park itself, the new facility features picnic terraces, expanded food options, modern bathrooms, meeting spaces and elevators that make that area of the park more accessible to guests with mobility issues. The team also used locally sourced timber, installed low-flow toilets, traded out plastic for bamboo serveware and paper straws, installed a wastewater management design that considers local waterways, and built around a pair of 100-year-old trees.

Designed by architectural firm Gensler, whose global projects include the refurbishment of Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater and the construction of Nevada’s Grand Sierra Resort Reno Arena, the Wolf Trap updates were started during the pandemic and done in an architectural style that compliments the Filene Center — which has a striking Brutalist design and is clad in douglas fir — and other pre-existing buildings. Some of these structures date back to when the land was not a venue or park, but a working farm. “I would say it’s contemporary with a rustic heart,” Manocha says of the overall design aesthetic.

Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts

Backstage, an earlier phase of construction revamped the artist area, which Monacha knew — from his time as COO of the LA Phil Association, which oversees the Hollywood Bowl and Disney Hall in Los Angeles — is something that artists notice. (To wit, when Bonnie Raitt came onstage during a June 2022 show, the first thing she said to the audience was, “You guys should see what they’ve done for us back there!”) Wood that previously covered the exterior of the Filene Center was upcycled to cover walls in artist dressing rooms, and a huge map shows performers the location of every National Park in the system. Manocha says artists are now arriving early on show days so they can hike before they play.

Funding for these updates was raised through a private philanthropy campaign orchestrated by Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, a private 501(c)(3) that works with the National Park Service to manage Wolf Trap. The campaign raised $75 million for onsite improvements and the park’s endowment, which also funds an artist training program and an education program designed by Wolf Trap and taught in pre-K schools and childcare centers nationwide. On-site improvements like Meadow Commons are effectively a gift to the park, given that these assets are on federal land and therefore can’t be owned by the Foundation.

While pretty, the land on which Wolf Trap sits is not, on its own, exceptional. You won’t see red rock canyons, towering waterfalls or rolling dunes. Nor does the land possess intrinsic historic value to the creation of the United States, as the country’s roughly 200 other national parks and monuments do. Rather, music and art provide Wolf Trap’s reason for being.

“The Park Service’s remit is to be the stewards of the fabric of American culture,” says Manocha. “In creating a national park for the arts, what the founders said [is] that artistry and creativity is part of the fabric of American culture. It is something that defines us as a people.”

Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts

Wolf Trap’s origins date back to the mid-1960s and a woman named Catherine Shouse. Born in 1894 in Boston to the family that founded Filene’s Department Store, Shouse was the first woman to receive a master’s degree in education from Harvard. She later became a lauded woman’s rights activist and went on to work in various government sectors. President Calvin Coolidge appointed her to work on women’s prison reform, and she served with every administration thereafter on myriad projects. She also had a farm in Vienna, then a rural outpost of D.C.

When Dulles airport opened 12 miles from Vienna in 1962, the construction of the road connecting it with D.C. split Shouse’s farmland by eminent domain. So, in the mid-’60s, she approached then-President Lyndon Johnson and Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall and told them she wanted to use the land for a public sanctuary that would blend art and nature. She requested this area be designated part of the National Park Service — which was founded in 1916 with the creation of Yellowstone in Wyoming — to ensure a high level of care and permanent protection.

Shouse’s requests were granted, and Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts opened in the summer of 1971 with an inaugural performance by the New York City Opera. In the 53 years since, programming has diversified to include just about everything: The 2024 season included shows by Wilco, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Nas, Clint Black, TLC, Anastasio and many others.

“We’re programming the National Park for music, and the National Parks are owned by all Americans,” says Manocha. “So, we have an obligation that everyone in this region feels that Wolf Trap belongs to them. I want people to feel like, ‘There’s something here that speaks to me.’”

Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts

But given that Wolf Trap is a designated National Park, things also operate a bit differently than at a typical venue. Instead of police officers controlling traffic flow on show nights, the job is handled by Park Police and Rangers in the park system’s signature uniforms. The National Park Service also oversees maintenance of the grounds, which includes 120 acres of parkland, 90 acres of forest, trails and a large fishing pond. The Park Service is not involved in artist booking or other arts-related programming.

Of course, Wolf Trap isn’t the only park to host concerts. Red Rocks Amphitheatre exists inside Red Rocks Park, which is owned and operated by the city of Denver. Lollapalooza is permitted to happen in Chicago’s Grant Park. The 2,500-capacity Blue Ridge Music Center amphitheater exists within Blue Ridge Parkway National Park. But Wolf Trap is an outlier in that concerts are literally its entire reason for being. “It’s not like we have to get permission to put on shows at this park, because we are the park,” says Manocha. “Without the concerts, there is no park here.”

Former ADOR CEO Min Hee-Jin’s Request for Reinstatement Dismissed by Korean Court

Min Hee-jin’s mission to be reappointed as CEO of NewJeans’ label ADOR just hit another hurdle. On Tuesday (Oct. 29), a South Korean court dismissed the embattled executive’s application to be reinstated in the position, according to reports from Korea JoongAng Daily and Mael Business Newspaper.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the dismissal means the court ruled in favor of HYBE and terminated the case without a judgment on its merits — essentially not conceding or accepting Min’s filing to begin with.

Trending on Billboard

Min originally submitted her application for reappointment on Sept. 13. In it, she asked the court to order HYBE’s internal board to re-elect a “new” CEO (a.k.a. herself), arguing that she needed to be in the position in order for NewJeans to continue its activities. However, the court’s latest decision has weakened that argument, the source says. Should Min continue her push to be reinstated as CEO, she will likely need to use a different argument to have any chance of her case moving forward.

For the time being, Min is expected to stay on as an internal director of ADOR. She was replaced as CEO by Kim Ju-young, HYBE’s head HR officer, in August.

“We acknowledge and appreciate the court’s wise ruling,” a representative for HYBE tells Billboard in a statement. “In light of this decision, HYBE is dedicated to normalizing ADOR’s operations, improving our multi-label capabilities, and supporting the activities of our artists.”

The development is the latest event in Min and HYBE’s months-long power struggle over ADOR and its powerhouse act NewJeans that stretches back to April 2024. Following an internal audit of ADOR, HYBE — also home to acts like BTS, Seventeen and Le Sserafim — called for the immediate resignation of Min as CEO, accusing her of trying to hijack the label imprint as well as NewJeans. The conflict has since devolved into a tangled web of he-said-she-saids, multiple lawsuits, and ultimately, Min stepping down from her position on Aug. 27.

Throughout the process, the members of NewJeans have become increasingly involved in the conflict, publicly sharing their support for Min during live performances and in a since-deleted 27-minute YouTube video in which they alleged mistreatment and a toxic work environment at HYBE. Most recently, NewJeans member Hanni, 20, appeared in court to testify to South Korean lawmakers about alleged workplace harassment, saying, “I came to the realization that this wasn’t just a feeling. I was honestly convinced that the company hated us.” During her testimony, she cited instances when she felt HYBE undermined the band and senior managers of the company deliberately ignored her.

While Min hasn’t yet released an official statement regarding the latest court decision, she’s gone on the record to South Korean media saying that she plans to “go all the way” in her legal pursuit to be reinstated.

Following the court’s decision, ADOR’s internal board again voted against reinstating Min on Wednesday (Oct. 30).

Don Omar Joins List of Puerto Rican Celebs Supporting Kamala Harris

The list of Puerto Rican celebrities supporting Kamala Harris’ presidential run is growing, with Don Omar joining in, delighting fans online.

Superstar artist Don Omar has added his voice to those celebrities with Puerto Rican heritage supporting Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. In a lengthy post issued through social media in Spanish and English, Don Omar wrote: “Puerto Rico is my land and my identity, and today more than ever I raise the flag of my island with pride. It is heartbreaking to hear the contempt and racist words directed towards my country and Latinos. Trump has made it clear, time and time again, what he thinks of us, and the possibility of him and his administration returning to power is really worrying,” adding his support of Harris and ending with the line: “It’s time to turn the page. We are not going back.”

The “King of Reggaeton” is the latest to endorse Vice President Harris in a response to shock comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s remarks while appearing at the campaign rally for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in Madison Square Garden this past Sunday (October 27) in New York City. Don Omar’s total social media following numbers over 50 million users.

After Hinchcliffe’s joke calling Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage” went viral, superstar Bad Bunny shared a clip of Harris blasting Trump for his treatment of Puerto Rico during Hurricane Maria, saying: “I will never forget what Donald Trump did and what he did not do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and a competent leader. He abandoned the island, tried to block aid after back-to-back devastating hurricanes, and offered nothing more than paper towels and insults.” He’d go on to share an eight-minute video celebrating his hometown while further attacking Donald Trump on Tuesday (October 29).

Other Puerto Rican celebrities who’ve put their star power behind Vice President Harris in response to Hinchcliffe’s remarks include Jennifer Lopez, John Leguizamo, The View’s Sunny Hostin, Daddy Yankee (who has previously supported Republicans in the past), and Marc Anthony, who posted a video on X, formerly Twitter, decrying Trump’s behavior. The combined star power is huge as the presidential election is in its final days, and many online are noting how much Trump’s vitriol against Latinos overall might just hurt his chances with high emotion, as one user remarked on Anthony’s post, “This ad literally brought tears to my eyes!”

Marvel Reveals Which New Series Fans Can Expect On Disney+ In 2025

HipHopWired Featured Video
Daredevil: Reborn

Source: Marvel / Disney+

After the massive success of Avengers: Endgame, it felt like Marvel fans began to get a bit of that superhero fatigue as the MCU’s following projects either struggled with popularity or just plain flopped with their audience.

From The Eternals to She-Hulk to Ms. Marvel, fans just weren’t feeling the films or series that Marvel Studios were churning out in recent years. Still, Marvel Studios has been hard at work with some new projects that may turn the tide on their struggling universe, and we got a sneak peak at what to expect in the coming future.

Today (Oct. 30), Marvel revealed what they have in store for their Disney+ subscribing fans with some new exciting series and some that no one actually asked for (no shots). Aside from bringing the new comic book classic film Deadpool & Wolverine to Disney+, Marvel will be dropping some new animated series in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Marvel Zombies, Eyes Of Wakanda and the final season of What If…?.

For their live-action productions, Marvel will be bringing some new superheroes into the MCU fold with the likes of Iron Heart and Wonder Man starring The Candyman himself, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

On the low, their animated series have always been top-notch compared to their live-action projects. Just sayin’.

But the series everyone has been waiting impatiently for is the return of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock in Daredevil: Reborn, which will also feature the long-awaited return of Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher and Vincent D’Onofrio’s The Kingpin. Though the series was originally a Netflix exclusive, Marvel promised to keep the violence and action every bit as intense as it used to be now that they’re on the family friendly Disney+ streaming service.

While it was rumored that Daredevil and The Kingpin were going to play a big role in Spider-Man 4, it’s being said that Marvel Studios is now going to turn their next installment of Spider-Man into another multiverse affair with Tom Hardy’s Venom possibly playing a role as Knull might be the main villain of the film. It kind of feels too soon for that, but hey that’s just us.

Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre are back. The West Coast icons announced on Wednesday (Oct. 30) that their Missionary album is slated to arrive on Dec. 13.

Snoop made the release date official with the unveiling of a hilarious trailer for the Doggystyle follow-up LP, which is fully produced by Dre.

“‘Missionary’ album drops 12.13. Produced by @drdre,” Snoop wrote to caption the clip.

In the video, a couple of men are going door-to-door preaching the Book of Mormon, but they’re left with their jaws on the floor when greeted by a woman in lingerie. “What the f–k? Your ad said you were dedicated to ‘missionary’ work,” she shouts before they run away in shock.

Snoop and Dre seem to be going in a different creative direction with their Missionary work. Following a few delays and a previously rumored November arrival, fans are excited the project has a concrete release date in December.

Missionary is the first time Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg will unite on a full-length project since Snoop’s 1993 Doggystyle debut album. The superstar duo has remained tight-lipped regarding details of the LP, but some special guests expected to appear on the album include Sting and Jelly Roll.

“We have Sting on the song. Man, it’s an amazing roster of artists that’s on this album. I shouldn’t have revealed that, to be honest,” Dre told Entertainment Tonight in August.

Jelly Roll gushed about the dream collaboration in an interview with Bootleg Kev earlier this month, where he confirmed his cameo.

“I won’t say anything about the record because he didn’t, but man, it’s special. It is really good,” he said. “I’m legitimately on the Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre album. It’s crazy. It’s unreal. Dude, Jimmy [Iovine] hits John [presumably Jelly Roll’s manager John Meneilly] and says, ‘Can we get on a FaceTime with Jelly Roll and Dre?’ I’m like, ‘Dr. Dre?’ I get on a FaceTime from my back porch. I’m like a kid. Jimmy’s there and I’m already like, ‘I cannot believe it’s Jimmy Iovine.’”

Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century Podcast: Britney Spears (No. 6)

On today’s (Oct. 30) episode of the Greatest Pop Stars of the 21st Century podcast, we reach No. 6 of our list with a pop star who became one of the great icons of the early 21st century — first as the artist behind a string of smash hits and unforgettable pop culture moments, then as a survivor of some of the most dehumanizing media coverage and behind-the-scenes struggles any celebrity has faced in recent years. (Read our No. 6 Greatest Pop Star essay about Britney Spears here.)

Host Andrew Unterberger is joined by Billboard executive digital director Joe Lynch and senior charts/data analyst Eric Frankenberg to track Britney Spears’ journey. First, we debate the finer points of her No. 6 position on the list and how much the exclusion of her 1999 …Baby One More Time era should affect her ranking, then we remember the finest singles, videos and performances from her ’00s peak, and how her steady personal and artistic evolution resulted in her also becoming a great albums artist. We also recall how even at her commercial apex, media treatment of Spears ranged from patronizing to offensive — and how later in the ’00s, discussion of her would turn downright cruel, with her public breakdown being used as cheap fodder for insulting headlines and bad late-night punchlines.

Then, we get into her revival at the turn of the ’10s, and how the conservatorship that controlled her work and life the entire time ultimately came to overshadow everything — before she won her freedom back, earning the right to do whatever she wants with her career, including stepping back altogether. We end by reliving some of our favorite random Britney-related moments over the years — including college football broadcasts, Juliette Lewis lip synchs, non-sequitur tweets and the phrase “fo shiz, fo shiz” — and sharing our predictions for what a Britney comeback could possibly look like.
