Zayn signs to a new label for his next album. Due Lipa announces two superstars for the next season of her podcast. Lewis Capaldi cancels his tour due to his battle with Tourette’s. We’re talking to XG ahead of their first mini album. And Morgan Evans teaches us some Australian slang. I’m Tetris Kelly for Billboard News, it’s Wednesday, June 28th. And we’re learning more about what’s next for Zayn. Billboard can confirm Zayn Malik has a new label and new music on the way.

Zayn wiped his social media this week leaving behind the pre-save link and teaser for new music. The star signed with Mercury Records, which says new music is coming very soon this summer. Billboard is being told the former One Directioner is making a major departure from the sound that defined his previous hits like ‘Pillow Talk’ and ‘I Don’t Want to Live Forever.’ We’re all excited to hear new stuff, Zayn, don’t keep us waiting too much longer. We also have new music from Japanese girl group XG on the way. Their next single ‘Girl Gang’ is out Friday. It’s the first track off their first mini album coming soon. We caught up with the girls in New York after their first performance in the States.

Morgan Evans Reveals His Favorite Australian Slang | Billboard

Rising country star Morgan Evans reveals his favorite Australian slang to Billboard.

Morgan Evans:
This is Morgan Evans, and this is my favorite Australian slang.

Morgan Evans:
First one, I feel like I need to start with this: “Fair Dinkum.” And it just means, like, the real deal. Like, if you were looking for some music news, you’d say Billboard Music news is “fair dinkum.”

Another one I have to say is the word “ripper” because I’ve been staying at my mate’s place here the last few days and we’ve been drinking coffee at a place called Little Ripper. And it’s an Australian coffee shop. And the term “ripper” just means, like, a “good one,” like a little, like “great one.”

And the third one is one that I find quite hilarious to explain to Americans. We have these very cute native birds in Australia called budgies, and they’re about they’re about this big, super cute — and our name for a Speedo. Instead of using the term Speedo, we call them budgie smugglers.

Guys, welcome to Billboard News. I’m Tetris Kelly and it’s Tuesday, June 27. Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Olivia Rodrigo announced the release date of her sophomore album and the pop star is ready to spill her guts.

Olivia took to socials on Monday to announce her highly anticipated record is arriving later this year. Unveiling the cover art, the pop star wrote on Instagram, “my sophomore album ‘GUTS’ comes out September 8. I am so proud of this record and I can’t wait to share it with you all.” She also shared a message to her fans in an IG story. “So excited about this new album and this new chapter. I can’t thank you guys enough for all your support and enthusiasm. Making this album was very daunting, very fun and very fulfilling. I can’t wait for it to be yours.” We’re so excited for the release and the first single ‘Vampire’ that drops this Friday.

You know, I hope Cardi and Meg watched this film and laugh out loud, cry, pee a little.

Ashley Park:
I love that song so much [‘WAP’]. And it was amazing to have the blessing of Megan and Cardi B, who we love so much, to use that song and to like, repurpose the lyrics in a way and they use it to empower themselves and to sexualize themselves and take ownership of that. And I’m so glad that we got to use that

Sabrina Wu:
Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B, me compared to them, I’m dirt, I’m nothing, and the way that they have done so much for black women and women’s sexuality, I literally owe them my life. My knowledge of the ARMY was that they were maybe the most powerful organization in the world. And I was like, ‘I can never do wrong by them.’ And I have the utmost respect for them.

¿Quién es Fuerza Regida? ¿Cómo describirías a Fuerza Regida? We would describe Fuerza Regida as unique, crazy, spontaneous. Fuerza Regida.

I used to cut hair, one of my clients say “hey, I got this band right there looking for bass player.” So I was just going to be the bass player in the band. Came in, I played the bass all practice, and then they asked me, “Do you sing? Sing a little bit.”

I sing a song, and they’re like, “Hey, you want to be the singer?” I’m like, “Yeah, we’re a group.” That’s how we met. Then later on, we had met him but he was like 14, we just be like, “Hey, what’s up little guy.”

Just cashing out. We had a hit song in San Bernardino, “Uno Personal.” It was a cover. It was not a hit but it was like a hit because they were like, “Who the hell are these Fat Boys?” You know, just singing, you know? But from there is history.

Doing some type of music that my culture did and like being famous for it was like one of my dreams. Cuando llegó la música mexicana a Los Angeles ya estaba ahí, todos con el mismo flow. Todos con la tejana, todos con un pintado, todos con boots, para nosotros en solo música. For us is just music, so we love it … My dad listens to this, we come on home you listen to and it’s just that’s what’s special about it. Nothing else. Nothing so special. Like, where’s difference just a certain music we grew up with and we love it.

Drake’s Poetry Book & Album, All the Drama That Went Down at the BET Awards & More | Billboard News

Drake has announced his first poetry book and a new album. The 2023 BET Awards took place Sunday night and we have your full recap. ‘The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula’ season 3 winner Landon Cider talks about finding drag, being inspired by David Bowie and Stephen Sondheim. And more!

Drake is not just a rapper; he’s a poet as well. Billboard was on the scene at the BET Awards. Country music dominates the charts, we played Never Have I Ever with Madeline Edwards, and ‘Dragula’ winner Landon Cider gives us his musical inspiration. Happy Monday, I’m Tetris Kelly for Billboard News, it’s June 26, and we’ve got to talk about Drake. Drake revealed over the weekend that he is releasing both a book of poetry and a new album. Drake revealed on his Instagram that he will drop a collection of poems, named ‘Titles Ruin Everything,’ a stream of consciousness he kept in the post. “I don’t know if I have ever wanted people to buy or support something more in my life.” The rapper and poet promoted the project with ads in major newspapers that included a QR code leading to a website where he revealed a new album is also on the way. The text on the side reads, “I made an album to go with the book. They say they missed the old Drake, girl don’t tempt me. For all the dogs.” The book of poetry is out now and no word yet on when we’ll get the new album.

Last night was the BET Awards and there was music on the stage and drama in the audience. From high notes to a couple at each other’s throats and hip-hop tributes to the GOATs.

The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula season three winner Landon Cider talks to Billboard about finding drag, being inspired by David Bowie and Stephen Sondheim, and more!

Landon Cider:
Because I’m an overachiever, the first song that I performed was a full on mix, where I came out as my feminine persona and transformed into drag on stage within, like, a six-minute mix, ending with “Freebird,” and I was jumping up and down to celebrate my freedom and my t–s fell out. Talk about freedom.

Landon Cider on he got into drag:
I found drag because it was a perfect combination of all my loves throughout my life, visual art, performance art and just theater. I was going to the clubs for many years, loving the queens, and then I got sick and I decided, “What am I going to do with the rest of my life once I feel better?” And I wanted to get back into theater, but I didn’t want traditional theater, and I remembered drag and I figured, “Let me give it a shot,” and I was hooked.

Landon Cider on his signature drag number:
Today, it is She Wants Revenge’s “Tear You Apart.” I can perform that song every night of my life and be completely happy.

Landon Cider on musicians who have inspired him:
All different kinds of music and musicians, everything from Broadway, like Stephen Sondheim to that “I want to f–k you” kind of energy like She Wants Revenge, androgyny like David Bowie — a little bit of everything.

And I feel like the energy is different this year because of course, we always celebrate Pride. But then there’s so many social issues happening right now. So have you noticed, like, a difference in Pride this year when we’re under attack for so many reasons?

Yeah, I definitely think that we are being fearfulness. And we are going out there and just showing our true colors, and letting them know that all of these laws that they’re trying to put in place, it’s not really stopping anything. We are going to still stand strong, and we’re gonna come together as a community and keep on fighting for our rights.

Carly Pearce:
Hi, I’m Carly Pearce, and these are five things you may not know about me.

I live on a bus with four grown men — and I’m grosser than all of them.

If I wasn’t in commercial country music, I would have a full sleeve tattoo, but I think I have as many as I can. I’m obsessed.

I hate when people are late. And I’m always either 10 minutes ahead or right on time, so don’t ever be late if you’re coming.

I am so clean that my house, if you ever come over to my house, people say that it looks like a model home, so you can drop in anytime you want.

And no one who knows me wants to get in a car with me. I’m a little bit reckless, but if you’re a police officer, I drive perfectly fine at the speed limit.

And those are five things you didn’t know about me.

At the Billboard Country Live event held June 7 at Marathon Music Works in Nashville, the Grammy winner participated in the Women of Country panel, which also included Hillary Scott of Lady A, Madeline Edwards and Lily Rose. The discussion was moderated by Beverly Keel, the dean of Middle Tennessee State University’s College of Media and Entertainment.
