Sinéad O’Connor, Chart-Topping & Outspoken Irish Singer, Dead at 56 | Billboard News

Tetris Kelly:
Irish music legend Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56.

Sinéad O’Connor, who topped the Billboard hot 100 with her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” has died. Her family confirmed the news with a statement to BBC saying, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

This comes just 18 months after her son, Shane, tragically took his own life. She had been open about her own mental health and her struggles after the death of her son. Her cause of death is not known at this time.

The Grammy winner was known for being outspoken on political matters, sexuality and religion. O’Connor changed her name in 2018 to Shuhada Sadaqat after converting to Islam.

Welcome to Billboard News. I’m Tetris Kelly and it’s Tuesday, July 25th. I hate to do it, but we have to start the show off with some sad news. Our March cover stars Rosalía and Rauw have reportedly called off their engagement.

Rauw Alejandro:
“Between collaborations, the difference is you’re collaborating with the love of your life. Well, I’m collaborating with the love of my life.”

Rosalía:
“Me too.”

They were one of music’s it couples but now they’ve reportedly called it quits.

Rosalía and Rauw Alejandro announced their engagement via their music video for ‘Beso’ back in March but the Latin power couple have decided to end the three-year relationship, according to People.

Rauw Alejandro:
“Rosi came down and I saw her, I got even more nervous.”

Leila Cobo:
“It was love at first sight for you?”

Rauw Alejandro:
“Yeah, 100%. Without a doubt.”

Rosalía:
“Really?”

Rauw Alejandro:
“Not at first sight — from the photo I was already in love with you.”

Rosalía:
“Me too, since I heard your name.”

We sat down with the ‘RR’ singers earlier this year to talk about their love, working together and how they inspire each other. But People‘s sources say despite the love and respect the singers have for one another, they have both agreed to end their engagement.

As for what’s next for these two, Rosalía just wrapped up her Motomami Tour, while Rauw will continue his Saturno Tour through November. Billboard has reached out to both Rosalía and Rauw but have yet to hear back. Neither has addressed the breakup publicly at this time, but we wish them both the best.

Killer Mike reveals his favorite Georgia slang.

Killer Mike:
What’s up? This Michael Render, Killer Mike.

Three of my favorite pieces of Georgia slang are “shawty” because that can mean so many things. It could mean, “I saw a pretty girl, and man, was she pretty. Shawty.” It could mean your buddy did something dumb: “Man, did he wreck your car? Shawty!” It could mean you just hit the lottery. “You hit the lotto?! Shawty!”

The other one is “hellyoutalmbout.” “Man I heard you lost your house.” “Hellyoutalmbout boy! I’m financially stable. I’m good. I’m in Greenwood man.” It could be a very, very, very bad thing too. Like, people say, “Man, I heard your house burnt down. …” “Hellyoutalmbout…”

My other one is … let me see, “playa.” I think that’s an old one we don’t use as much. But I liked it, man. I liked when Atlanta and Georgia kept it player, man, so to me, whether it’s Outkast music, Goody Mob tunes, or the way you see Thug or Baby. They really keep it playa. Future biggest playa of all time! And shouts out to all the playas out there.

And I just want to follow up on “jawnin,” and that just means to tease someone. I know people from D.C. thought they created that, but all your grandparents came from the South. So we’ve been jawnin a long time.

My new show on Netflix ‘Survival of the Thickest’ is a show that has been inspired by my book ‘Survival of the Thickest: Plus-Size Essays in a Small-Minded World.’ And so the themes are so important to me. We explore body positivity, sex positivity, inclusion, black, brown, queerness, what it’s like to live in the city, New York City, the best city in the world. And follow your dreams and hustle and what it looks like to be in a toxic relationship and in your mid 30s. And you got to make a choice, girl, what’s it gonna be?

Michelle Buteau:
What is this show gonna be? You know what I mean? Like, I have stories, I have the book, but I have this platform in 190 countries with Netflix, you know, I could be funny all the time, obviously. And I’m a woman — how she do it? I’m like, I am going to use this platform for good. You know, I’m going to say something important. I’m gonna be authentic to my New York. And that is everybody, literally everybody, every shape, size and shade. And so I’m so proud of not only diversity in the cast, but also the crew. Listen, my cast was amazing. I’m Tetris Kelly with Billboard News here at SoHo House in Los Angeles. And we’re telling you everything you need to know about Barbie weekend. Warner Bros.’ Barbie blasts into the box office top spot with a massive $155 million in domestic ticket sales, making it the year’s biggest opening, surpassing the Super Mario Bros. movie as well as every Marvel movie this year. It also broke the first-weekend record for a film directed by a woman. And what’s a movie without its soundtrack? Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice lay down the lyrics for “Barbie World.” Dua Lipa had Margot Robbie on her feet with “Dance the Night,” while Billie Eilish had us in our feels.

And I’m obsessed with the Janet Jackson sample on FIFTY FIFTY’s “Barbie Dream.” It was the perfect backdrop for a pool party with themed cocktails and, of course, Barbies, celebrating everything epic and pink this weekend. My workout playlist would be nothing because I really don’t work out. If I was going to work out, I would have [sings] “Take it to the limit … the limit.”

My date-night playlist would have to be [sings] “Slowed down. I just gotta get to know you,” because it’s an old-school banger. From Donell Jones, any record from his first album, and you got to have some Al Green, man.

My chill playlist, you wouldn’t even like it — it’s just whale music. I don’t even … it’s just random meditation music, that’s my chill music.

I’m not even going to tell you my throwback playlist because it’s pretty much everything I just told you.

His last performance was with one of his most well known collaborators Lady Gaga, the pair released two albums together, both of which took home Grammys.

Tony Bennett died at his home in New York on July 21, according to a statement from his management company. He was 96 years old.

The legendary jazz singer Tony Bennett has died at the age of 96. Tony Bennett’s list of amazing achievements includes 20 Grammys, 23 Hot 100 hits and 44 Billboard 200 albums. Tony began performing in nightclubs in 1946 and will continue to perform to packed crowds all the way up to 2021 at Radio City Music Hall as a celebration of his 95th birthday, even in spite of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2016.

His last performance was with one of his most well-known collaborators, Lady Gaga. The pair released two albums together, both of which took home Grammys.

Tony collaborated with some of the biggest names in music. In addition to Gaga, Tony worked with Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Christina Aguilera, Amy Winehouse, Marc Anthony, John Legend and so many more. Tony Bennett will be greatly missed, but his spectacular music will live on.

Ice Spice gave fans a tour of her neighborhood and talks Nicki Minaj, Drake and Taylor Swift.

Ice Spice took Apple Music to the Bronx to reflect on where she’s from and how far she’s come. And she sat down with Zane Lowe to talk about her whirlwind career, like collaborating with Taylor Swift.

While Taylor is making her laugh, she said Nicki made her cry. Ice said when she met Nicki Minaj, it felt like a full circle moment. She held it together when Nicki hugged her, but lost it when she walked away. She told Zane Lowe she considers Drake to be a mentor. She asked him questions about his come-up, he gives her career advice and they constantly crack each other up. She said he gives coach vibes. We love to see it. Now hopefully they collab soon.
