Tyla Talks About Creating ‘Water,’ the Journey to Her Debut Album, Grammy Win & More | Billboard Cover

Billboard cover star Tyla talks about creating her viral hit “Water,” the journey to creating her recently released debut album ‘Tyla,’ the diverse collaborations from Becky G, Tems, Gunna and Skillibeng, how her sound has evolved from R&B and pop to more Ampiano focused, how she feels to be the first artist to win a Grammy in the new African Music Performance category, how the South African dance Bacardi dance style inspired the viral “Water,” dance, canceling her highly anticipated Coachella performance and tour due to injury and more.

Tyla
People are gonna see me everywhere. So if you don’t like me, I’m sorry.

Tyla
The making of “Water,” I was wrapping up the album. And I was looking for sounds that I was missing. And I really felt like I was missing like a summer, banger, vibey type song. So I ended up working with these people that we call the Fantastic Four, which is Ari, Corey, Mocha and Sammy Soso and, we came up with literally the exact song I had envisioned. And we recorded it in a bedroom, literally. And I just remember repeating it and repeating it and playing it for whoever would listen and people that I played for loved it had a really good feeling I started performing it before it was out. And the response was so good that I was like, Wait, this could be the song. But obviously the challenge and everything took a like to the wall.

I’m Rania Aniftos, it’s Tuesday, April 16 and we got to kick off the show with Courtney Love getting real about some of your faves. Courtney Love did not hold back when she talked about Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and more. Let’s break it down. Courtney Love does not shy away from sharing her opinions while promoting her eight part audio series on the BBC, Courtney Love’s Women, The whole front woman actually admitted to not liking some women’s music. She told the Atlantic she likes the idea of Beyonce doing a country album because she’s a black woman in a commonly white space, but she doesn’t like her music. Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are the biggest women in music at the moment, but Courtney doesn’t think Taylor’s important. Love said “she might be a safe space for girls and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist.” Speaking on Madonna Courtney simply said “I don’t like Madonna and she doesn’t like me.” She also talked about Lana Del Rey.

Dua Lipa on Creative Vision of ‘Illusion,’ Lyrics & Music Video | Billboard News

In this episode of How It Went Down, Dua Lipa talks about an illusion she faced during the talking stage of a relationship, how it led to the creation of her new track “Illusion” and the Spanish twist in her music video.

Dua Lipa:
Hey, this is Dua Lipa, and this is How It Went Down with my song “Illusion” for Billboard.

The songwriting process, it always starts with a “Yap,” how we like to call it with Caroline. I was in a studio in London, where I spent pretty much most of my year and a half writing for this record. Every morning I would go in and I’d have a cup of tea and I would sit with Caroline. And we basically like … it’s a sofa and there’s a little table and we would sit on the floor, in between the sofa and the table, and just start talking about everything that was happening.

I was in, I guess, the “milkshake” of singledom. It’s just like, this crazy roller coaster of just funny stories. And I think it just makes for really good writing. And so I’d go in, and I’d sit with Caroline, who I’ve been working with since my first album. I mean, we’re so close, so I can tell her anything. And we were sitting down and talking.

It’s funny when someone thinks that they can trick you — or they can be an illusion of some sort. And you see right through it, but you choose to, like, play along because it’s just more funny. But you, you know, all the way through, I guess it’s just part of the dating thing, where you’re just kind of just texting at this point, because you’re bored.

He also teaches our host Tetris Kelly some of his famous choreography and more!

Tetris Kelly:
Hey, it’s Tetris with Billboard News, hanging out with choreographer extraordinaire Richy Jackson. What’s up, man?

Richy Jackson:
How’s it going?

Tetris Kelly:
It is going well. I’m so happy to get into this dance conversation with you and maybe dance a little bit as well.

Richy Jackson:
Yes, we got to do that, Tetris.

Tetris Kelly:
Let’s talk about Fortnite, Lady Gaga, this whole experience. Talk to me as if I’m an idiot. What is Fortnite and how do we incorporate Lady Gaga into this game?

Richy Jackson:
OK, so truth be told, this is my first time ever experiencing Fortnite.

Obviously, I’ve heard about Fortnite — it’s been a thing. I just never played it. My assistant, Ian, was literally laughing when this whole, like, experience happened because he said, “You don’t know what you’ve done. Like, you don’t even know what you’ve done right now.” And I was like, “I don’t,” so I was like, “I have to least play the game.”

So I played the game and it was interesting just, like, to see the skins of Lady Gaga and understand, like, the wrap — which are the weapons — and then I was like, “OK, when’s the dance happening?” So I’m watching the dance happen I’m like, “OK, yeah, this is it.” But Ian tells me, “Well, just letting you know that when you dance, you can’t dance safely because you can still get shot.”
