Jay-Z doesn’t make many public appearances where he speaks these days, but that shifted majorly over the weekend. During his acceptance speech at the annual Grammy Awards ceremony for the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, Jay-Z took a slight shot at the Recording Academy and mentioned that his wife, Beyoncé, has a leading 32 Grammy Awards but has never won the coveted Album of The Year trophy.
Flanked by his daughter Blue Ivy, Jay-Z took to the stage but humbly thanked Dr. Dre, the man for whom the award is named. In a loose moment for both men, Hov is heard lavishing praise upon the veteran producer, who bashfully tried to keep the moment focused on the man on the stage.
From there, the rapper born Shawn Carter launched into a freewheeling speech where he mentioned Beyoncé, who looked on with a beaming smile, stating that he doesn’t understand how the Academy hasn’t voted for her to win the AOTY Grammy.
Jay then spoke about the nature of the award show itself, mentioning the historic win for DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince and their 1989 boycott of the ceremony. The Brooklyn bomber then made mention of how the pair went on to watch the Grammys anyway. He then turned the moment on himself after he boycotted the Grammys in 1998 for snubbing the last DMX, who had a monster year with two top-charting and acclaimed albums.
It didn’t end there as Jay continued to shoot from the hip, saying that some nominees will feel like they were robbed and that some might actually get robbed before wrapping it up and saying that some people probably didn’t deserve to be nominated.

Black History Month is here and, for many of us in the culture, the history and contributions of our people remain front and center all year long. On X, formerly known as Twitter, Black History Month became the top trending topic and sparked several replies we’ve gathered below.
Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) Former President Daryl Michael Scott shared in an essay on the ASALH website that definitively explains the rich history of Black History Month and its founder, Dr. Carter G. Woodson.
In the summer of 1915 in Chicago, Woodson, who attended the University of Chicago, traveled to the city to join in a celebration of the 50th anniversary of emancipation. With thousands of Black attendees at the event, Woodson and others held exhibits displaying varying articles related to Black history. For three weeks, crowds converged upon the Coliseum, which sparked Woodson to form an organization dedicated to studying Black life and history. On Sept. 9 of that year, Woodson met with A. L. Jackson and three others to establish the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH).
More from the ASALH website:
He hoped that others would popularize the findings that he and other black intellectuals would publish in The Journal of Negro History, which he established in 1916. As early as 1920, Woodson urged black civic organizations to promote the achievements that researchers were uncovering. A graduate member of Omega Psi Phi, he urged his fraternity brothers to take up the work. In 1924, they responded with the creation of Negro History and Literature Week, which they renamed Negro Achievement Week. Their outreach was significant, but Woodson desired greater impact. As he told an audience of Hampton Institute students, “We are going back to that beautiful history and it is going to inspire us to greater achievements.” In 1925, he decided that the Association had to shoulder the responsibility. Going forward it would both create and popularize knowledge about the black past. He sent out a press release announcing Negro History Week in February, 1926.
Woodson chose February for reasons of tradition and reform. It is commonly said that Woodson selected February to encompass the birthdays of two great Americans who played a prominent role in shaping black history, namely Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, whose birthdays are the 12th and the 14th, respectively. More importantly, he chose them for reasons of tradition. Since Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, the black community, along with other Republicans, had been celebrating the fallen President’s birthday. And since the late 1890s, black communities across the country had been celebrating Douglass’. Well aware of the pre-existing celebrations, Woodson built Negro History Week around traditional days of commemorating the black past. He was asking the public to extend their study of black history, not to create a new tradition. In doing so, he increased his chances for success.
The 1970s saw a wider embrace of a longer celebration period, something Woodson advocated for in his lifetime along with other educators. At Kent State University, the Black United Students Group and other Black educators combined their efforts for a Black History Month celebration in 1970.
In 1976, the month-long celebration began taking root across the country after President Gerald Ford recognized the month during the celebration of the United States Bicentennial. Across the globe, Black History Month jumped off at varying intervals with the United Kingdom first celebrating the month in 1987, with Germany and Canada joining along in the 1990s.

GloRilla might not have a proper full-length project to her name yet but she’s undoubtedly one of Hip-Hop’s brightest young stars. However, the Memphis star is ruffling feathers after a new video surfaced on one of her social media accounts where she blasted “baby mamas” and men who enjoy smoking hookah.
TMZ Hip Hop snagged an Instagram Live video of GloRilla, 24, riding around and recording the clip for her 4 million followers on the platform, opening up a barrage on baby mamas and using a terrible term.

“Don’t shoot the messenger. It’s some baby mamas I f*ck with and some of y’all not so,” GloRilla began. “But most of you hoes make this baby mama sh*t look dumb like every ho I know that’s a baby mama is like a dumb b*tch.”
GloRilla continued with, “B*tches be real deal dumb, it’s like becoming a baby mama or the baby mama title make a b*tch [redacted].”
The “F.N.F.” star then turned the heat up on men who smoke hookah.
“And y’all know I can’t leave the n*ggas out, I gotta talk sh*t about n*ggas is some type of way,” GloRilla continued. “Y’all n*ggas around here acting like y’all tricks, y’all n*ggas be fake tricks.”

Even with only an EP to her name Ice Spice is arguably one of the biggest female rappers in the game today. And the baddy from the Bronx is out to keep her name hot out on these streets for 2024 and luckily for her, she knows how to do just that.

Taking her talents to South Beach for her latest visuals to “Think U The Sh*t (Fart),” Ice Spice and her crew turn up in the 305 where they hit the beach, twerk at the bodegas and Icey flaunts stacks of cash that no doubt came from Jordan Poole’s bank account. Yeah, we’re not letting that one go, bro.

Elsewhere Wiz Khalifa doesn’t seem to mind getting high on his own supply and in his clip for “Soak City Freestyle,” the mix martial artist practicing rapper indulges in some Khalifa Kush while rolling around the city before finding himself in his hotel suite, smoking up some more of his product. We hope that man gets his lungs checked out at least once a year. Just sayin.’
Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from Dej Loaf, Dthang Gz, and more.

Like him or not Jack Harlow is doing numbers. For the last four weeks, his single has held the top slot in America.

As reported by Billboard, the Louisville, Ky. native is on another historic winning streak. The music industry periodical has confirmed his song, “Lovin On Me” has been the top song on the Billboard Hot 100 for the last month.

According to the publication’s 2018 article, the list is ranked based on physical and digital sales, streaming, and radio play in the United States. This new achievement surpasses his previous success with “First Class” which topped the chart for three straight in 2022. He also shared the number one spot with Lil Nas X with “Industry Baby” back in October 2021.

Ironically, “Lovin On Me” is a standalone single that was not included in his most recent album Jackman. His third album was produced by FnZ, DJ Dahi, Boi-1da, and others. The project was met with mixed reviews with some critics calling it his most authentic effort yet while others stated the project felt disjointed.
Jack Harlow first got his shot back in 2020 with his song “What’s Poppin”. The track would go on to be well received on TikTok. That same year he landed a slot on XXL Magazine’s Freshman Class. You can view the video for “Lovin On Me” below.

Yasiin Bey took to Instagram Live to address the recent comments he made about Drake where he suggested that the Canadian superstar’s music is often heard while shopping at Target. The artist formerly known as Mos Def elaborated on his statement, urging for more substance from Drake and even demanding the same of himself.
Yasiin Bey shared a video on his Instagram page addressing his comments on Drake, and the expectations of an artist of his magnitude, while even turning some of that critique toward himself.

“First of all, I don’t hate anyone,” Bey began his discussion. “My opinion is mine. It’s legal in all states, as far as I’m aware. It was not an opportunity to try to slander him, or to clown on him. I have reached out to him, I have no responses yet. I’m not keen to talk about people or to them through a screen, I prefer to talk to people directly. But I will say this. The young man is very talented, he’s been able to be very successful with that talent, and I have no issue with his success or anything that he’s been able to achieve as a result of his talent.”
Bey then spoke directly to his words and that criticism isn’t always an attack on a person, recognizing that Drake has contended with such comments for the duration of his still buzzing career.
“I do feel that some of the criticism that he’s received in the past has been mean-spirited or unfair. So I don’t want to participate in that,” said Bey. “I’ve never had no issue with you personally, I don’t know you well enough to have any sort of issue with you in that regard. Nonetheless, it’s not sacrilegious to have a critique or opinion of a public figure, particularly one of that magnitude in current, modern culture.”
Yasiin Bey added that he would welcome the opportunity for a face-to-face conversation with the OVO Sound honcho, adding that he enlisted the help of Dave Chappelle to connect the two.

A TikTok user defending Megan The Stallion in her rap feud with Nicki Minaj claims that Minaj’s fans doxxed him, threatening his life.
Over the weekend, social media was ablaze as Nicki Minaj publicly vented at length over a line in Megan Thee Stallion’s latest single “Hiss”. “These hoes don’t be mad at Megan, these hoes mad at Megan’s Law,” the three-time Grammy Award winner said, apparently referencing Kenneth Petty, Minaj’s husband since 2019 (Petty is a convicted sex offender).

Minaj took offense, making fun of the Houston native being shot in the foot by Tory Lanez in 2020 as well as insulting the rapper’s late mother in an Instagram live video on Friday (January 25). That didn’t sit well with Bela Delgado, a TikTok user who blasted the Pink Friday artist in a video.

The video caught the attention of Miraj’s fans known as the “Barbz” whom Delgado said have been harassing and threatening him. “Nicki Minaj fans are attempting to dox me, messaging family members as well as people who aren’t members of my family, sending them s–t — apparently they got somebody’s address,” he said in a video posted on Saturday (January 26). “I am sorry. I’m so sorry that I disrespected Nicki Minaj. I saw a lot of other people doing it; I thought I’d add my two cents.” He cited his autism in the apology, saying to his 1.4 million followers that “sometimes things come out a lot harsher” because he’s on the spectrum.
Delgado said in the now-deleted video that he felt Minaj was a “disgusting and reprehensible person by pretty much all metrics of basic humanity and common decency,” referencing that he was once a former supporter of hers.  It changed “when she started intentionally surrounding herself with sex offenders,” referencing Petty & Jelani Miraj, Nicki’s brother who was convicted of raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter in 2015.
The back-and-forth between Nicki Minaj and the “Savage” rapper has gotten exceedingly ugly, as Minaj released a new song entitled “Bigfoot” which included lyrics previewed in her Instagram live video: “She like 6 foot, I call her big foot,” Minaj raps, before saying someone “fell off, I said get up on your good foot.” Minaj has also been spotted amplifying her fans’ posts on X, formerly Twitter. For her part, Megan Thee Stallion replied on her Instagram showing her doubled over in laughter covering her mouth as she previewed Minaj’s response to “Hiss”.
