Killer Mike won three Grammy Awards for his critically adored Michael album, which actually netted him a total of four of the prestigious trophies so far in his career. The Atlanta multihyphenate caught his first in 2002 (with a little less drama), thanks to a sharp verse on OutKast’s “The Whole World,” so he had a bit of a drought between accolades.

So the vindication of finally getting more proper recognition, including one for Best Rap Album, from his musical peers was that much sweeter. “It felt like acknowledgment of the work,” Mike tells Hip-Hop Wired of what he felt getting his awards. “Hip-Hop…people say the culture, and they say…it’s usually a means to an end when most people say that, and they’re using the culture. But as a kid who grew up in the Deep South, in this little town masquerading as a city called Atlanta, all I ever wanted to be was an MC. And to achieve the dream of becoming an MC and then to in the 50th year of Hip-Hop make the best Rap Album…just a pure Hip-Hop album, it’s one of the greatest [feelings]. It is a vindication from the bullshit 3.5 The Source gave me. It’s a vindication from the bullshit 6.5 Pitchfork gave me. It’s a vindication from bullshit ass reviews online of people who are not even from my culture, not only on Hip-Hop but a from Black southern man’s culture. It’s vindication that allows me to roll by in my ‘67,  $100,000 Firebird and shoot a bird out the window and say fuck you motherfuckers, I did it!”

But don’t mistake his tallying of receipts for sour grapes. He adds, “On a very practical level beyond vindication, what it is, is an affirmation that the dream of a nine-year-old child and the work that he put in over the course of the last about to be 40 years, was an affirmation that the imagination of a child, encouraged and untethered, anything is possible. And everything is possible.”
While the Grammy nods are great, Killer Mike also performed at Urban One Honors a few weeks prior (it taped Jan. 20 at The Roxy in Atlanta), and getting recognition from a Black-owned entity was just as poignant. When asked to speak on it began by giving props to Urban One’s founder, Cathy Hughts. “First of all I give a lot of praise to Cathy Hughes for having vision to create Radio One and be the tip of the spear in what’s become a media megaplex with the television, radio and beyond,” said Mike. “I was honored to be asked by Cee Lo to be a part of it, Cory Mo helped put it together and shouts out to Urban One.”

Killer Mike went on to add that TV One also has a special place in his household.

“If you want to see The Cosby Show, if you want if you want to see Black people doing well and thriving, you want to see A Different World, that’s the place you go as a family,” explained Mike. “The same way I would watch Norman Lear stuff with my grandparents—Good Times, The Jeffersons, Sanford & Son—I been blessed through Urban One to be able to have and recreate similar things with my family here at the house. We’re not watching a lot of aspirational things that aren’t us, we get to watch stuff that is us. And that’s important. It was important for me to be recognized by them, and I’m deeply honored.”
Be sure to watch Urban One Honors: Best in Black when it premieres Sunday, February 25 at 8/7C on TV One.

This year’s edition of the Urban One Honors will see the legendary Dionne Warwick recognized as an honoree along with Chlöe and Frankie Beverly.

On Wednesday (January 3), Urban One announced the list of honorees for their annual Urban One Honors gala. The year’s theme is “Best In Black”. The list is topped off by the iconic singer Dionne Warwick, who will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Ms. Warwick was recently an honoree at the Kennedy Center Awards last month. Chlöe will receive the Generation Next Award, and R&B legend Frankie Beverly will receive the Living Legend Award along with the Grammy Award-nominated gospel singer and songwriter Donald Lawrence who will be honored for his Inspirational Impact.

Earmarked as the launch event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of TV One, the ceremony will be recorded at the Coca-Cola Roxy venue in Atlanta, Georgia on January 20. It will feature a strong lineup of performers including Teyana Taylor, Bebe Winans, October London, Damon Little, and Angie Stone as well as a reunion of the R&B Divas cast of Nicci Gilbert, KeKe Wyatt, and Chanté Moore. Grammy Award-winning singer and actress LeToya Luckett makes her return to host the “Backstage Pass” element of the event, which features intimate and exclusive interviews with the honorees, presenters, and performers. More artists are to be announced in the coming weeks.
“As we unveil the lineup for this year’s ‘URBAN ONE HONORS,’ we are delighted to highlight the incredible musical journeys of Dionne Warwick, Chlöe, Frankie Beverly, and Donald Lawrence. Their selection as honorees is a recognition of their profound impact on both music and culture, spanning generations,” Michelle Rice, President of TV One and CLEO TV said a press statement. ” From soulful ballads to timeless contributions and contemporary brilliance, these iconic artists have not only shaped the musical landscape but have also contributed significantly to the cultural fabric of our society. Each honoree represents a unique chapter in the story of music, and we are honored to celebrate their enduring legacies at this year’s Urban One Honors: Best In Black.”
The 2024 Urban One Honors: Best In Black will premiere during Black History Month on Sunday, January 25 on TV One. It will also be simultaneously broadcast on CLEO TV.

Dionne Warwick, Chloé Bailey, Frankie Beverly and Donald Lawrence will be saluted at the 2024 Urban One Honors, which is set to tape on Saturday, Jan. 20 at the Coca Cola Roxy in Atlanta. The two-hour telecast will premiere on Sunday, Feb. 25 on TV One and simulcast on CLEO TV.
Warwick will be recognized as the lifetime achievement honoree, Bailey as the generation next honoree, Beverly as a living legend, and Lawrence for his inspirational impact.

Both Warwick and Beverly have had their old hits revived very successfully in the recent past. Doja Cat’s “Paint the Town Red,” which features Warwick’s 1964 hit “Walk on By,” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks last year. In 2019, Beyoncé covered Beverly’s 1981 hit with Maze, “Before I Let Go,” on Homecoming: The Live Album.

Beyoncé was born two weeks after Maze’s record entered Billboard’s Hot Soul Singles chart, as Top R&B/Hip-Hop Songs was then known. Doja Cat was born more than 30 years after “Walk on By” was a hit – which shows the longevity of this prized material.

Warwick, 83, received the Kennedy Center Honors in a ceremony which aired on CBS on Dec. 27. The five-time Grammy-winner received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy in 2019.

Lawrence, 62, won a Grammy in 2008 for best traditional gospel album for Live – One Last Time.

Bailey, 25, has received five Grammy nods, including best new artist, as part of Chloe X Halle.

Beverly, 77, the leader of Frankie Beverly & Maze, has never even been nominated for a Grammy, but the group received a BET lifetime achievement award at the 2012 BET Awards.

“As we unveil the lineup for this year’s Urban One Honors, we are delighted to highlight [their] incredible musical journeys,” Michelle Rice, president of TV One and CLEO TV, said in a statement. “Their selection as honorees is a recognition of their profound impact on both music and culture, spanning generations.”

Urban One Honors bills itself as the ultimate celebration of Black excellence, acknowledging individuals who have left an indelible mark on the arts, media, music and the community. This year’s theme is “Best in Black.”

Bebe Winans, Angie Stone, Teyana Taylor, Damon Little and October London will also appear on the show. There will also be an R&B Divas reunion featuring KeKe Wyatt, Chanté Moore and Nicci Gilbert.
