Will Jennings, the Oscar- and Grammy-winning co-writer of Titanic‘s “My Heart Will Go On” and other hit songs by Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood and Whitney Houston, has died. He was 80.
The superstar lyricist passed away Friday (Sept. 6) at his home in Tyler, Texas, his caregiver Martha Sherrod confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. A cause of death was not provided, but Jennings had been experiencing health issues in recent years.

“A sad time, the passing of Will Jennings, a maestro, brilliant mind and a gentle spirit. It was an enormous honor to have worked with such a musical genius,” former J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf, who collaborated with Jennings, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) Saturday.

During his career, the Songwriters Hall inductee co-wrote six songs that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: Barry Manilow’s “Looks Like We Made It” (1977); Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes’ “Up Where We Belong” (1982); Winwood’s “Higher Love” (1986); Houston’s “Didn’t We Almost Have It All” (1987); Winwood’s “Roll With It” (1988); and Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” (1998).

Jennings also collaborated with Clapton on “Tears in Heaven,” which hit No. 2 on the Hot 100 and topped Billboard‘s Adult Contemporary chart for three weeks in 1992. The tribute to Clapton’s late son also earned the pair a song of the year trophy at the 35th annual Grammy Awards.

Jennings won best original song at the Academy Awards in 1983 for co-writing An Officer and a Gentleman‘s “Up Where We Belong” alongside Jack Nitzsche and Buffy Sainte-Marie. He took home the same honor in 1998 for the Titanic classic “My Heart Will Go On,” which he wrote-wrote with composer James Horner. The Dion-sung ballad also won a Grammy for song of the year.

Jennings was born in Kilgore, Texas, in 1944. Before hitting it big in songwriting, he was a professor at Tyler Junior College and later Austin State University, before teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. His résumé also includes musical collaborations with superstars like B.B. King, Mariah Carey, Jimmy Buffett and Roy Orbison.

Jennings is survived by his wife, Carole, and his sisters, Joyce and Gloria.

That’s why the formative year was the inspiration behind Disney‘s freshly released series, Kindergarten: The Musical, which follows the story of 5-year-old Berti and her new friends as they navigate life at school. “We were all kids once,” one of the show’s creators and executive producers, Michelle Lewis, tells Billboard.

Her fellow series creator and executive producer, Charlton Pettus, agrees. “We’re both parents. Real kids are so much more interesting than most people. We’re telling super fun stories about people we know extraordinarily well, having raised bunches of them.”

Lewis and Pettus are longtime co-creatives, as they worked as producers, songwriters and musicians for decades. Lewis is a two-time Emmy Award winner who has written for Cher, Amy Grant, Little Mix and more. She’s also worked on a number of animated children’s shows, including Doc McStuffins, Vampirina and Bubble Guppies.

Since 2000, Pettus has been a touring guitarist, producer and cowriter for Tears for Fears, and has also worked with artists including Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan and Selena Gomez. However, Kindergarten: The Musical marks his first time working on a television show. “It’s so much better,” he says of working in television. “In the darkest days of pop songwriting, [Lewis and I] were in that period where the mission was to write songs that sounded like they were about something, but assiduously avoided ever actually being about something. So, I think we got a little burnt on the chase.”

He noted that “TV and film seemed much more fun, so we started dabbling in that,” before adding, “We had a couple shows we were trying to pitch. Kindergarten came up as a back pocket pitch. We thought it was clever and kind of fun. As as we went out in the world and talked to people, this was the one that that people reacted to.”

However, music is hardly left on the back burner on Kindergarten: The Musical, as the name suggests. Lewis calls the series a “love letter to music” and its unifying nature. “We have a song called ‘I Want to Go Home’ in the show,” she says as an example. “It’s about being in school and they miss home, they miss their dog, whatever. What would seem like a tiny moment, for a little kid is actually a big moment, and big enough for them to sing. I hope that the show makes kids feel seen and heard, celebrated and comfortable with expressing those things, those fears and anxieties and joys and all that stuff through music.”

Pettus concludes, “Why do songs make us cry? Because we recognize ourselves. It resonates. I think we just want to do the same thing with kids. We want them to recognize themselves, see themselves, and see that it works out, that it’s all okay.”

Kindergarten: The Musical is available to watch on Disney Jr. and Disney+. Check out a clip of the song, “First Day,” exclusively via Billboard below.

There’s a new villain in town.
Joker: Folie à Deux premiered at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival this week, with stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga as well as director Todd Phillips in attendance to celebrate the film, which officially hits theaters on Oct. 4.

Unlike the first Joker film, for which Phoenix won an Oscar for best actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir won for best original score, Joker: Folie à Deux follows Phoenix’s return as Arthur Fleck, a.k.a the Joker, who is now confined in Arkham Asylum. There, he meets Gaga’s Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, and they form a powerfully chaotic bond with the goal of causing mayhem across Gotham City. Unlike the first Joker film, the sequel includes a series of musical numbers, which is where fans see Gaga in her element.

While critics generally applauded Gaga’s subtle yet conniving Lee, many were actually hoping to see her more in the music-filled film, deeming her “underused.” See what critics had to say about Gaga’s performance in Joker: Folie à Deux below.

“Gaga is smartly low-key, not the Harley Quinn we associate with Margot Robbie, but her own person, dressed down and believably showing affection and connection with Joker and, more important, the man behind the makeup.” – Deadline

“The casting of Lady Gaga certainly sounded promising, because she’s a great actor, and was put on earth (among other things) to make musicals. But Gaga, who has a lovely unforced presence in Folie à Deux, is drastically underused. Her Lee never quite takes wing.” – Variety

“Lady Gaga brings a sly and manipulative malice to her role: Harley is secretive, smart and genuinely disturbed in a way that Arthur/Joker perhaps isn’t. Is she to be the Lady Macbeth of DC supervillainy?” – The Guardian

“Gaga is a compelling live-wire presence, splitting the difference between affinity and obsession, while endearingly giving Arthur a shot of joy and hope that has him singing ‘When You’re Smiling’ on his way to court.” – The Hollywood Reporter

“Gaga looks as if she’s a Manson girl who’s wandered off the set of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, and plays Harleen with an appealingly feline cruelty.” – The Independent UK

“Phillips’ decision to cast a generational superstar in a role that seems designed to maximize both her supreme talents as a singer and her all-consuming screen presence as an actress just so he can sit her in the background of a courtroom whenever he’s not cutting her musical numbers off at the knees… well, it’s a lot more criminal than anything Arthur Fleck ever does in this movie.” – IndieWire
