Woody Harrelson will be enshrined in the Saturday Night Live five-timers club on Feb. 25 when he hosts the show during an episode that will feature musical guest Jack White. Harrelson — who will soon be seen in the upcoming movie Champions and the HBO political drama White House Plumbers — previously hosted in 1989, 1992, 2014 and 2019.

In a cosmic coincidence, it will also mark White’s fifth appearance on the show; he previously rocked the Studio 8H stage in 2002, 2012, 2018 and 2020. The news comes on the heels of the announcement that White’s previous band, The White Stripes, are among the nominees for the 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The last time White appeared he was a last-minute fill-in for country singer Morgan Wallen, who was booted from the line-up for violating the show’s COVID-19 protocols at the height of the pandemic.

White dropped two albums in 2022, April’s Fear of the Dawn and July’s Entering Heaven Alive.

This year has already brought memorable musical guests Sam Smith, Lil Baby and, this past weekend, Coldplay. For their seventh appearance on SNL, Coldplay opened with their 2022 single, “The Astronaut,” on which they collaborated with BTS’ Jin. Their second song was a medley of “Human Heart” from 2021’s Music of the Spheres and their 2005 fan favorite “Fix You,” from X&Y. The band was joined during the emotional performance by Jacob Collier and choral ensemble Jason Max Ferdinand Singers.

Check out the SNL announce from White.

The director of Leaving Neverland, the documentary that chronicled two accusers’ sexual abuse claims against Michael Jackson, is criticizing a planned biopic about the late singer.

In a guest column for The Guardian published Sunday (Feb. 5), Dan Reed criticized the decision to release a biopic about the music icon, questioning why “no one is talking about ‘canceling’ this movie, which will glorify a man who raped children.”

“It seems that the press, his fans and the vast older demographic who grew up loving Jackson are willing to set aside his unhealthy relationship with children and just go along with the music,” Reed wrote.

He went on to directly address the filmmaking team, which includes director Antoine Fuqua, writer John Logan, as well as producers Graham King, John Branca and John McClain, the latter of whom are co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate. Reed challenged whether the film would be able to represent alleged moments of abuse.

“How will you represent the moment when Jackson, a grown man in his 30s, takes a child by the hand and leads him into that bedroom?” the Emmy-winning Leaving Neverland helmer asked. “How will you depict what happens next?”

He adds that the film “sidestepping the question of Jackson’s predilection for sleeping with young boys” is broadcasting a specific message to survivors of child sexual abuse. “That message is: if a [pedophile] is rich and popular enough, society will forgive him,” he said.

The biopic about the Grammy-winning, record-setting artist was announced last week and will address all aspects of Jackson’s life, according to Lionsgate, though it remains unclear how the film will tackle the various controversies around the late musician.

“For me, there is no artist with the power, the charisma, and the sheer musical genius of Michael Jackson,” Fuqua said in a statement. “I was influenced to make music videos by watching his work — the first Black artist to play in heavy rotation on MTV. His music and those images are part of my worldview, and the chance to tell his story on the screen alongside his music was irresistible.”

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to the Jackson estate and Fuqua for comment.

Reed said making Leaving Neverland, which features Jackson accusers Wade Robson and James Safechuck, “was not just the opportunity to expose Jackson by having his victims speak on camera for the first time. Here was an opportunity to bring to the widest possible audience an insight into how children fall victim to any sexual abuser, the psychology of the predator and, above all, the grooming process.”

Paul McCartney is getting the documentary treatment from Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville.
Neville helped announce the news Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4) inside Milk Studios, host of Universal Music Group’s star-studded artist showcase, an annual Grammy weekend event presented by chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge that typically features a packed program of musical performances mixed with some breaking news on Uni film projects.

Today’s installment, the first showcase in three years due to the pandemic, was no different with news on McCartney, a feature documentary on Grammy winner Jon Batiste from Oscar- and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Matthew Heineman and a spring release date on HBO for Love to Love You, Donna Summer.

The McCartney project is titled Man on the Run and comes from MPL Communications (the umbrella company for McCartney’s business interests) and Polygram Entertainment (the film and TV division of UMG). Per official intel, the film will focus on the period of McCartney’s life after the breakup of The Beatles and feature never-before-seen archive material and new interviews. It will begin as the rocker navigates the aftermath of the breakup, his life with beloved wife Linda McCartney and the epic creative surge that followed.

Man on the Run will serve as “the definitive document of Paul’s emergence from the dissolution of the world’s biggest band and his triumphant creation of a second decade of musical milestones — a brilliant and prolific stretch.” His solo career delivered such tracks as “Maybe I’m Amazed,” “Another Day,” “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey,” “Hi, Hi, Hi,” “My Love,” “Live And Let Die,” “Band On The Run,” “Jet,” “Junior’s Farm,” “Listen To What The Man Said,” “Silly Love Songs,” “Let ‘Em In,” “Mull Of Kintyre,” “With A Little Luck,” “Goodnight Tonight” and more.

Neville, who won an Oscar for 20 Feet from Stardom, comes to the film after having previously worked on other docs like Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain and the Mr. Rogers-focused Won’t You Be My Neighbor? He’s producing with UMG’s Michele Anthony and David Blackman, producer Caitrin Rogers, Maverick’s Scott Rodger and Ben Chappell from MPL. Man on the Run is fully financed by MPL and Polygram and presented and produced by MPL, Polygram and Tremolo Prods.

“How do you rediscover yourself after being in the biggest band the world has ever known? Well, until the breakup of The Beatles, no one had ever had to answer that question,” Anthony explained to the capacity crowd seated inside Milk Studios. “At its heart, it’s a story of Linda and Paul’s enduring love as he finds his own voice as an artist, resulting in one of the most creative periods of his life.”

Neville, a self-described “Beatle-maniac” and McCartney-obsessive, said he’d read every book and seen every documentary about the band but has found something new with Man on the Run. “I was too young to buy Beatles records when they came out, but I could buy Wings records, and I loved them. To me, the story of what happened to Paul in the wake of The Beatles when he had to rediscover himself is the story that has never been told,” he said. “When Universal and Michele called me about this, it took me about three seconds to say I have to do this. It’s the kind of thing I think I’ve been training for since I was 10 years old.”

Batiste also took a spin in the spotlight to announce his collaboration with Heineman on American Symphony, a feature documentary about his path to creating the stage show of the same name that debuted at Carnegie Hall last fall. The film is said to be an intimate look at his creative process and an unprecedented look at his personal life during the highs of winning five Grammys (including album of the year for “We Are”) and lows of facing his wife’s cancer diagnosis and treatment.

During brief comments this afternoon, Batiste touched on the rollercoaster. “Looking back, you know, it’s very hard for me. It’s something to share. For the sake of giving everyone a window into the power of art but mostly the power of our own resistance,” he explained. “This is a life-affirming thing that happens when you confront your mortality, and you confront the edge of your ability. You confront the edges of the thing you didn’t know you could do or didn’t know you could make it through, and maybe make it on the other side.”

He praised Heineman, someone he called an “incredible artist” who he allowed to film him “for a year straight, every single day, the most vulnerable and open-eyed I have ever been with a camera.” Heineman comes to the project after critically acclaimed work on docs like The First Wave, Retrograde, Tiger, The Boy from Medellín and Cartel Land. “Hopefully this film reaches you, and my experiences will teach you something about yourself, about life, about struggle, about triumph, about humanity,” said Batiste.

The film announcements were peppered in a program that featured a parade of performances from UMG acts in front of executives, music industry insiders and fellow artists. Seated inside Milk Studios o Saturday were Elton John (with David Furnish), David Zaslav, Niall Horan, Ice Spice, Fletcher, Yo Gotti, Sabrina Carpenter, Brooklyn and Bruce Sudano, Queen Naija, Natalie Jane and more.

UMG executives in attendance included Angel Kaminsky, Avery Lipman, Ben Adelson, Bruce Resnikoff, David Blackman, Dickon Stainer, Elliot Grainge, Frank Briegmann, Gary Kelly, Imran Majid, Jesus Lopez, Jo Charrington, Jody Gerson, John Janick, JT Myers, Justin Eshak, Marc Cimino, Michelle Jubelirer, Monte Lipman, Nat Pastor, Richelle Parham, Sam Riback, Steve Berman, Tunji Balogun, Tyler Arnold and Wendy Goldstein, among others.

“We’re back,” said Grainge in kicking off the program. “Can you believe it’s been three whole years since we were last in this room celebrating artists and new music? We’re all back together. A lot has happened in these last three years, and today is just about the music.”

Taking the stage at the showcase (presented by Merz Aesthetics’ Xperience+ and Coke Studio) were Kim Petras, Sam Smith, Samara Joy, Glorilla, Stephen Sanchez, Lauren Spencer Smith, Feid, Muni Long and Doechi. Grainge saved a surprise performance for the very end as he welcomed country icon Shania Twain to close the show. The audience was clearly into the performances, granting standing ovations to many of the artists, a rarity for sometimes stuffy label showcases.

That was certainly not the case today, which started on a strong note thanks to a standing ovation for blockbuster act Billie Eilish, who opened the program by taking the stage to accept an inaugural honor — a UMG x Reverb Amplifier award — given by Grainge on behalf of her eco-activism. Eilish said she feels “very seen” with the trophy. “Everyone in this room, we can all do our part. A lot of you got some money in your fucking pockets. Maybe use it for good things and not stupid things.”

Coldplay returned to Saturday Night Live as musical guest on Feb. 4 to deliver some recent tunes and revisit a fan-favorite classic.
The British band, led by charismatic frontman Chris Martin, opened with their 2022 single “The Astronaut,” a collaboration with BTS member Jin. The song opened with a starry background and colorful shooting lights, and later revealed the musicians donning friendly looking alien masks while performing the upbeat track.

For their second performance, Coldplay opted for a medley of their heartfelt songs “Human Heart,” from their 2021 Music of the Spheres album, and their 2005 classic “Fix You,” from X&Y. The band was joined during the emotional performance by Jacob Collier and choral ensemble Jason Max Ferdinand Singers.

This marked Coldplay’s seventh time performing as musical guest on the NBC sketch comedy show. The episode also featured first-time host and The Last of Us actor Pedro Pascal.

Coldplay is currently nearing completion of its 10th studio album, the follow-up to 2021’s Music of the Spheres, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.

“We’re finishing an album called Moon Music,” Martin recently told Toronto’s City News, “which is the second Music of the Spheres volume, but that won’t come out for a little bit.” The singer added that Coldplay “might” start playing some of the songs live “at some point this year.”

After launching the Music of the Spheres tour in Costa Rica last March, Coldplay recently added a series of new North American dates for later this year, slated to launch at Seattle’s Lumen Field on Sept. 20 and wind down on Oct. 1 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

Pedro Pascal is the star of two of TV’s biggest hits at the moment. But The Mandalorian and The Last of Us star will be a first-time Saturday Night Live host tomorrow (Feb. 4), and judging by this week’s promo things are not going great so far.

“Little Pedro Pascal from Santiago, Chile hosting Saturday Night Live,” the actor says to himself proudly as he wanders around the silent stage of fame studio 8H in the minute-long clip. “Wild,” he muses as he hears a strange sound from somewhere off stage and sees the shadow of someone running in the distance.

Curious, Pascal goes in search of the disruption because by now he’s an expert at busting out his flashlight and looking for potentially lethal things that go click in the night thanks to his role as Last of Us apocalypse survivor Joel; the hit HBO drama is based on the video game of the same name is set in 2023, 20 years after a mass fungal infection wiped out most of the planet’s population and clicking zombies are in search of the remaining humans.

When Pascal’s light beam catches one of the show’s signature clickers — wearing a trench coat for some reason — lurking in the dark, the actor grabs a hammer and prepares to brain the undead mutant before cast members Sarah Sherman and Molly Kearney jump in to stop the carnage.

“What are you doing you psycho?,” Sherman shrieks as the lights flick on. “What do you mean? That’s…” says a surprised Pascal. “… our brand new cast member?” Sherman explains to the embarrassed host. “Not cool, Mr. Pascal,” Kearney scolds him. “Listen, I know it’s your first time hosting, but a little advice: don’t hit the cast members with a hammer you maniac!” Sherman offers.

As Sherman walks off arm-in-arm with “Matt,” Kearney warns Pascal that he is not making “the best first impression” and says they have their eye on him. “This place is nuts… I like it,” Pascal smiles. Though it is the actor’s first go-round on the show, musical guest, Coldplay will be taking the SNL stage for the seventh time.

Check out Pascal’s SNL promo below.

A team o’ wild horses couldn’t tear Austin Butler and his Elvis accent apart — until now. A distinct Tennessee drawl has been stuck like glue on the 31-year-old actor’s voice ever since he played The King in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic, something that fans have poked fun at him for in recent months. But in a new appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Butler said that he’s finally working to drop the accent for good.

“I am getting rid of the accent,” he said on the show, which airs Friday night (Feb. 3). “But I have probably damaged my vocal cords with all that singing. One song took 40 takes.”

His Dune 2 co-star David Bautista said the star’s accent’s pretty much already gone. “I don’t know who this guy was, but it’s not Austin Butler,” he told USA Today of the actor, who will play his character Rabban’s brother Feyd-Rautha. “It’s not Elvis. His voice is different, his look is different.”

The Carrie Diaries alum has earned almost universal acclaim for his big screen portrayal of Elvis Presley, for which he spent years learning to sing, dance, talk and even laugh exactly like the late rock n’ roll legend. In January, Butler won best actor in a motion picture, drama for his performance, and he’s up for best actor at this year’s Oscars.

This isn’t the first time Butler has addressed Elvis’ lingering effect on his voice. He joked about it in his opening monologue while hosting Saturday Night Live in December, and in interviews since the film came out, he’s chalked the change up to the intensive preparations he underwent to transform into Presley while shooting Elvis.

“I don’t think I sound like him still,” he said in the Golden Globes press room after winning his award. “But I guess I must because I hear it a lot. I often liken it to when somebody lives in another country for a long time. I had three years where that was my only focus in life, so I’m sure there’s just pieces of my DNA that will always be linked to him.”

Butler’s interview on The Graham Norton Show airs tonight on BBC1.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are getting back into the David Fincher business. The Oscar-winning musical duo will team up with their frequent collaborator for his upcoming movie, The Killer, which is due out on Netflix on November 10.

The news was announced on the Nine Inch Nails site in a post revealing the details for their deluxe 3LP release of their score for Fincher’s 2002 biographical drama about the career of Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. “Starting with the Academy Award-winning score for The Social Network in 2010, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have been collaborating with David Fincher as film composers for over a decade,” read the post.

“Their critically acclaimed score for Mank is now available in a deluxe vinyl package,” it continued. “Reznor and Ross have also done the score for Fincher’s next project, The Killer.” The duo — who won a second Oscar in 2021 for the score to animated film Soul (shared with Jon Batiste) — have also written the scores for Fincher’s Gone Girl and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

NIN bandmates Reznor and Ross have had a fruitful side hustle in movie scoring, not only working repeatedly with Fincher, but also lending their musical chops to the 2016 Boston marathon bombing drama Patriots Day, Jonah Hill’s 2018 directorial debut, the coming-of-age comedy Mid90s, the 2019 drama Waves, the 2019 graphic novel TV adaptation Watchmen and director Sam Mendes’ 2022 drama Empire of Light; the pair also co-produced Halsey’s 2021 album If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power.

Season 2 will feature celebrity guests including Chloe x Halle, Kelsea Ballerini, Quinta Brunson, Chance The Rapper, Darren Criss, Jason DeRulo, Nikki Glaser, Taraji P. Henson, Sarah Hyland, Kesha, Patti LaBelle, Adam Lambert, Julia Michaels, French Montana, Keke Palmer, Billy Porter, Nicole Scherzinger, JoJo Siwa, John Stamos, Kenan Thompson, Quavo, Will.i.am, Saweetie and many more.

Finn Wolfhard is getting all the tea from Winona Ryder. In a new interview published on Wednesday (Feb. 1), the actor revealed he’s been asking his Stranger Things costar everything he could possibly want to know about her famous relationship history.

“She dated Dave Grohl and MCA from Beastie Boys, and all these people,” the 20-year-old frontman of The Aubreys said in a new GQ profile. “I could literally ask her what it was like knowing Kurt Cobain, and she just tells me everything.”

Wolfhard also described Ryder as “one of the funniest texters ever” who will often leave him on read for days on end. “She’ll text you and then you’ll text her back and then she won’t text you ever again,” he added. “She’ll text you whatever, say something like, ‘Oh, have you ever seen this movie?’ And I’ll be like, ‘No, I haven’t. How are you?’ And then just, nothing.”

It should be noted that, throughout the 1990s, the Little Women actress was also engaged to Johnny Depp and later dated both Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum and Matt Damon. While linked to Pirner, she even starred in the music video for his band’s 1993 single “Without a Trace,” the follow-up to their Grammy-winning breakout track “Runaway Train.”

These days, Ryder has been with longtime love Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011, though the pair have not yet married. Meanwhile, last month Wolfhard — as Ziggy Katz — unveiled new solo track “Pieces of Gold” from his upcoming A24 feature film When You Finish Saving the World.
