Sara Beth Liebe just walked away from her chance at winning American Idol, after calling out judge Katy Perry for a “hurtful” “mom-shaming” joke.
According to the 25-year-old hopeful, however, it wasn’t the “Firework” singer’s remark that made her quit — but it did have to do with her children. “This opportunity is really rad, but this is actually going to be my last performance, because my heart’s at home,” Liebe told Perry and co-judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie after performing her first round Hollywood week song — “Roxanne” by the Police.
“So, I’m going get home to my babies,” she continued on the Sunday (April 2) episode before making her grand exit. “They kind of need me.”
Both the judges and the show’s producers were shocked. Bryan called the decision a “mistake” and Perry pleaded with her to change her mind, but the young mother of three stood her ground. “I don’t even know what show business is,” she said. “I’ve been a mom since I was 18. I’ve been married since I was 18. … I don’t think I realized quite how hard it would be to be away from my kids.”
“They’re all still really young,” Liebe told a producer backstage. “There is a lot of guilt when you leave your kids to do something completely selfish. … I feel like I’m not gonna win the show anyway, so I might as well go home.”
The decision aired just a few weeks after the aspiring singer addressed a joke made at her expense by Perry during her initial audition for the show. “Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much,” the “Dark Horse” pop star had said after discovering that Liebe was 25 and a mother of three.
“It was hurtful and that’s that,” the contestant later said in a TikTok about the interaction. “I think that women supporting and uplifting other women is so cool, and I think that mom shaming is super lame and I think that it’s hard enough to be a mom and it’s hard enough to be a woman.”
Billboard previously reached out to Perry after Liebe’s comments, but did not receive a response.
Even though she won’t be continuing with Idol, it looks like Liebe will continue to practice music in other ways. She recently announced on TikTok that her original song “Bruises” would be arriving “very soon.”
Better yet, it looks like Perry’s “mom-shaming” comment is water under the bridge now, as far as Liebe is concerned. After Sunday’s episode aired, the former contestant posted another TikTok reflecting on her experience, adding in her caption, “Can we talk about how gooooood Katy looked in that shade of purple…?”
“Sometimes we are presented with big opportunities and situations and we have to make big decisions,” she also wrote. “I’m so GRATEFUL.”
@sarabethliebe Gratitude is the ONLY word that comes to mind. I can’t wait to continue supporting my new friends and to continue making music. 🤍 that’s what it’s all about afterall. Oh and also, can we talk about how gooooood Katy looked in that shade of purple and how Lionel SLAYED that orange jacket? 😩👌🏻😍 ♬ original sound – Sara Beth

Lil Yachty took viewers on a trip during Saturday Night Live on April 1.
For his musical guest debut on the iconic sketch comedy show, the 25-year-old rapper — who appeared on Billboard‘s cover in March — performed a pair of tracks from his mind-bending psychedelic album, Let’s Start Here., which dropped earlier this year.
Yachty transformed the Studio 8H into a swamp-like atmosphere for his performances of “the BLACK seminole.” and “drive ME crazy!” The moody nighttime performances featured backing by singer-songwriter Diana Gordon and a full band.
Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson served as host during the April 1 episode of SNL.
Let’s Start Here., Yachty’s foray into the rock world, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums in early February. The set peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200.
“I did what I really wanted to do, which was create a body of work that reflected me,” Yachty told Billboard of Let’s Start Here. “My idea was for this album to be a journey: Press play and fall into a void.”

“We’re already working on it,” Taylor told Tamron Hall in a clip from their interview shared exclusively with Billboard. “We’re in the building process right now. I always wanted to make sure I could lock in with any person that I would be playing.”
Taylor went on to note that she was inspired by Angela Bassett’s portrayal of Tina Turner in 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do With It and Jamie Foxx’s capturing of Ray Charles in 2004’s Ray. “I miss when movies were like that, when you got to really get to know them and tap in,” she added.
Hall shared that given her passion to get to know Warwick, she’ll soon be eating at the “That’s What Friends Are For” star’s favorite Italian restaurant in New Jersey. “We talk almost every day,” Taylor replied excitedly. “That’s my girl.”
Taylor concluded, “I’ve always been a firm believer and stood on safety. She’s had a wonderful career, and I think right now is about making her feel as safe as possible to tell her story because a lot of these stories get misconstrued or dramatized to an extent. That’s not really where we want to go.”

Lil Yachty has some very bad news for Saturday Night Live cast member Sarah Sherman in one of the promos for this weekend’s show. “Oh my God!,” a nervous Sherman yelps after this week’s host, Abbott Elementary star/producer/writer Quinta Brunson, introduces herself.
“What?” a surprised Brunson asks.
“I just realized, I haven’t paid my taxes,” Sherman frets about not filling out her forms before tax day descends in two weeks. “Oh, that’s okay. You still have a couple weeks,” Brunson assures the sketch player.
“No, I just realized I haven’t paid my taxes… ever,” Sherman squeaks.
After standing silently through two bits, a shades-wearing Yachty laughs and says, “Damn, you are going to jail.”
Sherman is equally sweaty in the first promo, where Brunson tries to talk the comedian off her hyperventilating edge by revealing that it’s Sarah’s first promo shoot and asking her if she’s okay. “Yeah, sorry, I’ve never done this before,” Sherman sheepishly apologizes as Brunson says she can tell.
“Hi, I’m Quinta Brunson and I will be hosting…,” Sherman stammers with eyes wide open. “Oh, no, see that’s my line,” Quinta explains as she and Yachty comfort the clearly shook SNLer. The third bit, of course, leans into a school/detention joke.

News broke Thursday (March 30) that Megan Thee Stallion is in talks to join the cast of Josh and Benny Safdie’s new Netflix movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rapper — whose legal name is Megan Pete — will appear opposite headlining star Adam Sandler, who last teamed with the Safdies for the acclaimed 2019 crime drama Uncut Gems.
Should Meg nail down a role in the yet-untitled film, it will follow her upcoming big-screen debut in F—ing Identical Twins. Based on the stage production of the same name and directed by Larry Charles, the musical romp from A24 will also star Aaron Jackson, Josh Sharp, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally and Bowen Yang. Megan previously made a one-off cameo on an episode of Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, appeared as her alter ego Tina Snow in season 2 of the Starz drama P-Valley, and spent two seasons judging HBO’s ballroom voguing competition series Legendary.
A further pivot into acting adds yet another layer to the Grammy winner’s ever-dynamic career. At the Vanity Fair Oscar party earlier this month, she teased that she’s started working on new music as a follow-up to her sophomore album Traumazine. The 2022 release featured the singles “Sweetest Pie” with Dua Lipa, “Plan B,” “Pressurelicious” featuring Future, “Her” and the Key Glock-assisted “Ungrateful.”
Meanwhile, Tory Lanez has attempted to reignite the legal drama between himself and the female rapper by requesting a new trial after being found guilty last year of shooting her in 2020.
Daisy Jones & The Six aren’t done just because their Prime Video series is. Less than a week after the 10-episode show’s finale, the fictional-turned-real band inspired by Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel dropped two surprise singles Thursday (March 30) as a “Special Gift for Our Fans.”
The double single includes previously unreleased tracks “It Was Always You,” sung by leading lady Riley Keough as frontwoman Daisy Jones, and a version of “Aurora” performed by the full band during a Saturday Night Live appearance in the Prime Video series. Both tracks debuted in the penultimate episode of Daisy Jones & The Six, which dropped Friday (March 24) after three weeks of episodes being released two or three at a time throughout the month of March.
“It’s been clear to all of us from the start, how passionate the fanbase is for Daisy Jones & The Six,” said Atlantic Records’ West Coast president Kevin Weaver in a statement. “Never was that more obvious than when the fans took to social media last week loudly campaigning for the releases of these 2 new songs that appeared in the series’ final episodes.”
The “Special Gift for Our Fans” release follows the band’s debut album Aurora, which became available for streaming one day before Daisy Jones & The Six premiered March 2. The record has since accumulated over 50 million times and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Soundtracks chart. Meanwhile, the full band — comprised of fictional characters Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin), Karen Sirko (Suki Waterhouse), Graham Dunne (Will Harrison), Eddie Roundtree (Josh Whitehouse) and Warren Rojas (Sebastian Chaon) in addition to Keough’s Daisy — became the first act from a scripted series to debut atop Billboard‘s Emerging Artists chart.

Kelly Clarkson was not playing around in her latest Kellyoke performance. The three-time Grammy winner sang a fiery cover of Gayle‘s viral hit “abcdefu” on The Kelly Clarkson Show Thursday (March 30), after which fans were quick to notice that she’d made a few pointed lyric changes — which they believe are directed at her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock.

Right from the start, Clarkson made the 2023 Grammy song of the year nominee her own, belting out tweaked lyrics as strobe lights and electric guitar raged behind her. “Forget you, and your dad, and the fact that you got half,” she sang, an immediate departure from the original words. “And my broken heart, turn that s–t into art.”
The “Stronger” singer later repeated those lines in place of the song’s chorus, which usually goes, “F–k you and your mom and your sister and your job/ And your broke a– car and that s–t you call art.”
The lyric change, particularly “the fact that you got half,” seemed indicative of Clarkson’s high profile 2022 divorce settlement with Blackstock, to whom she was married from 2013 to 2020 — at least, it did to fans, who also picked up on some extra passionate facial expressions and hand gestures the Voice coach added to the new Kellyoke cover. “The finger listing at the end, all the eyebrow raising…we see and hear you @kellyclarkson,” tweeted one fan in response to a video of the performance.
“Oh she real mad at Br*ndon!!” tweeted another.
“On the video’s YouTube page, more fans shared their belief that the singer was calling out her ex.
“‘the fact that you got half’ — yesss drag him!!!” wrote one viewer. “my broken heart, turn that bullsh*t into art — new album coming!”
“Kelly is putting Narvel and Brandon on some serious blast,” added another. Narvel is Blackstock’s dad, who is a producer and manager. The elder Blackstock was previously married to Reba McEntire for 26 years.
Billboard has reached out to Clarkson’s reps for comment.
Clarkson first filed to split from Brandon in June of 2020. In December of that year, she was granted primary custody of their two children, River and Remington. In March of 2022, the former couple finalized the terms of their divorce, with the American Idol alum agreeing to pay her ex $1.3 million in addition to monthly child support.
Her flaming new Kellyoke cover comes just a few days after Clarkson announced her next album Chemistry, which doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date. The record will explore the complicated emotions she experienced in the wake of her breakup and her adjustment to life as a single mom, as well as the evolution of her past relationship.
“I was trying to find a word, it might be one of the songs on the album, but I was trying to find a word that really described the whole thing,” she said while announcing the project Sunday (March 26). “I didn’t want everybody to think I was just coming out with some ‘I’m angry,’ ‘I’m sad’ — just one or two emotions. This album is definitely the arc of an entire relationship.”
