When the nominations for the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards were announced on Aug. 8, Beyoncé had just a single nomination (albeit a big one) – artist of the year. Queen Bey did better in the nominations in four socially voted categories, which were announced on Friday (Sept. 1). She received three nods in the social categories, which put her in a tie with Taylor Swift for the most in these four categories.
The two megastars are going head-to-head for show of the summer, song of summer and album of the year (in addition to the previously announced artist of the year).
SZA, BLACKPINK, Drake, Ice Spice and TOMORROW X TOGETHER each received two nods in the social categories.
The album of the year contest could give us a preview of the upcoming Grammy race in that category. Swift’s Midnights and SZA’s SOS, both nominated here, are thought to be Grammy front-runners. Also nominated in the category are Drake and 21 Savage’s Her Loss, Metro Boomin’s Heroes & Villains and Miley Cyrus’ Endless Summer Vacation, which are considered strong Grammy possibilities (though not sure things), and Beyoncé’s Renaissance, which received a Grammy nod for album of the year last year.
With the addition of these social categories, Swift still leads in total nominations (11), followed by SZA (eight); BLACKPINK, Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj and Olivia Rodrigo (six); Kim Petras and Sam Smith (five each); and Beyoncé, Diddy, Drake, Ice Spice, Karol G, Metro Boomin, Shakira and TOMORROW X TOGETHER (four each).

In the spirit of her new single “Used to Be Young,” Miley Cyrus is strolling down memory lane and reflecting on some of the most pivotal and controversial moments of her nearly two-decade career. For Part 15 of her Used to Be Young TikTok series, Cyrus tackled her controversial 2008 Vanity Fair photo shoot.
Fifteen years ago, Cyrus posed for the cover of Vanity Fair. The shoot was helmed by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, and featured a then-15-year-old Cyrus exposing her bare back to the camera as she wrapped her body in what appeared to be a sheet. At the time, Cryus was still starring as the titular character on Disney’s blockbuster television series Hannah Montana. The Vanity Fair shoot was intended to help further differentiate Cyrus from the character that quickly consumed her.
Upon release, Miley disregarded the potential controversy of the image saying at the time, “I mean I had a big blanket on. And I thought, ‘This looks pretty and really natural.’ I think it’s really artsy.” Nonetheless, controversy inevitably ensued, forcing Cyrus, Leibovitz and Disney to release statements apologizing for the photographs. In the years that followed, the controversy continued to obfuscate the real story and intent behind the images, “which is always much more meaningful,” according to Cyrus in her new TikTok post.
She recalls, “My little sister Noah was sitting on Annie’s lap and actually pushing the button of the camera, taking the pictures. My family was on set, and this was the first time I ever wore red lipstick because Pati Dubroff, who did my makeup, thought that that would be another element that would divide me from Hannah Montana.”
What the star calls “really brilliant choices” made in an effort to separate Miley Cyrus from Hannah Montana, the public perceived as the inappropriate hypersexualization of America’s most beloved and recognizable child star.
Cyrus’ initial apology, which she retracted via Twitter (now known as X) a decade later, read, “I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed.” For its statement, Disney went for an offensive approach, writing, “Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines.”
As for Leibovitz, she defended her work. “I’m sorry that my portrait of Miley has been misinterpreted,” she said. “Miley and I looked at fashion photographs together, and we discussed the picture in that context before we shot it. The photograph is a simple, classic portrait, shot with very little makeup, and I think it is very beautiful.”

In Netflix’s upcoming fictional series Neon, Tyler Dean Flores plays Santi, a wanna be reggaetón artist who moves from a small Florida town to Miami to get a record deal and become a star.

It’s a rags-to-hopefully-riches story, but with a reggaetón twist. Santi heads to Miami with his two best friends, who also happen to be his “manager” and social media and marketing director, and who are as clueless as he is, but also have the guts to shamelessly power along.
The series, which debuts Oct. 19, has a star-studded roster of behind-the-scenes players, including Daddy Yankee, who is credited as executive producer, and the SB Projects team of Scooter Braun.
As for the music, Santi’s big calling card is his song “Exagerao,” which, viewers find out, he uploaded to YouTube and has become a bit of a hit, big enough to be recognized by fans in local nightclubs and even a couple of promoters and record execs.
”Exagerao” was produced in the real world by hitmaker Tainy, who is one of the executive music producers for the show, along with Lex Borrero and Ivan Rodriguez from Ntertain and Neon16.
“Exagerao,” said Tainy in a statement, is perfect for a U.S. born Latin like Santi “because it’s not just a reggaeton song, but it comes from his perspective. Yes, the production bangs and feels like a club song, but it also connects with the character culturally. The slang, the delivery, his lover-boy persona, even the choices on his pronunciation being more like a second-generation Latino in the U.S. In subtle ways every line tells you about Santi.”
While the fabled “Exagerao” video the show’s characters talk about so much is yet to come, Billboard got a sneak peek of “Exagerao” the song, which hits streaming services today (Aug. 31).
Santi’s vocals are courtesy of Neon 16 up and coming artist RMAND, who lends his voice to the character’s three songs in the series.
