Beyoncé‘s forthcoming Cowboy Carter LP is already much talked about — and it’s not even out yet. Slated to hit digital streaming platforms at midnight on March 29, the superstar’s new set marks the culmination of her foray into country music. Ahead of the album’s release, “Texas Hold ‘Em” banjo player Rhiannon Giddens joined IMPACT x Nightline to talk about racism in country music, pop crossovers in the genre and the backlash against Cowboy Carter in the episode airing March 28, and Billboard has an exclusive sneak peek.
Giddens — a singer and scholar who has dedicated her life to extolling the Black history of the banjo and country music — believes Cowboy Carter is a massive step toward genuine mainstream recognition of the genre’s roots.

Trending on Billboard

“It’s been really interesting,” Giddens tells IMPACT x Nightline‘s Janai Norman of the resounding success of catchy country-pop track “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which Beyonce dropped during the 2024 Super Bowl alongside the rousing, reflective ballad “16 Carriages.” “I have been on … a slight roller-coaster ride of … exposure of my music, TikToks being danced to my banjo sound– that’s been really, really, really amazing. It feels like a real pure moment of discovery.”

“Texas” has experienced notable commercial success: It not only topped the Billboard Hot 100, but has appeared on nine different Billboard airplay charts and earned Beyoncé the distinction of being the first Black woman to top Hot Country Songs and the first Black woman to summit the Hot 100 with a country song. Despite that, the superstar faced considerable backlash for her hard pivot into country music. One Oklahoma radio station initially refused to play “Texas” (it later reversed its decision), and, upon revealing the Cowboy Carter album cover, Beyoncé was immediately embroiled in discourse surrounding the intricacies of the dynamic between Black Southern identities and Americana imagery.

In Giddens’ conversation with IMPACT x Nightline, the musician — who is a time-time Grammy winner — stresses that Cowboy Carter is more about BeyoncĂŠ exploring her family’s roots than crossing over for the sake of crossing over. “People can do what they wanna do,” she points out. “They wanna make a country record? Make a country record. Nobody’s askin’ Lana Del Rey, ‘What right do you have to make a country record?’ You know what I’m sayin’? Everybody has the opportunity to explore their roots, to go back there, like, ‘This is my life too. I wanna … I wanna do this.’”

“The ‘Stay in your lane,’ the, ‘Well, that’s not real country,’ that’s just racism,” argues Giddens. “People don’t wanna say it’s because she Black. You know? But they use these … these coded terms, you know? And that’s problematic.”

The March 28 episode of Impact x Nightline will examine Beyoncé’s Hoston roots, and features interviews with Giddens and fellow Houstonian and previous collaborator Bun B. The show will also hear from rising Black country artists within the Nashville machine, such as Adell, for their thoughts and enthusiasm on Beyoncé’s impact on contemporary country music.

Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat‘s 2008 hit “Lucky” is already the epitome of a love song, but on an upcoming episode of The Voice, two of Dan + Shay‘s team members added an even more romantic layer to the track by making it bilingual.
Madison Curbelo and Kyle Schuesler take the stage to perform the hit in the Battles round, trading off verses on acoustic guitar — with Curbelo performing in Spanish and Schuesler performing in English, before both of them come together to sing a bilingual chorus.

“I believed you,” coach John Legend told Schuesler when he admitted he never performed in Spanish before. “When I’m able to just enjoy and not overthink it, when it’s in my heart and not my head, that’s when I know it’s great and that’s what I felt.”

Chance the Rapper was blown away by the performance, giving a piece of advice to the duo’s coaches, Dan + Shay. “Both of you guys could win the entire competition, and neither of you guys should leave and I think John is going to try and steal Kyle, so if I were Dan + Shay, I would use my Playoff Pass right now,” he said, referring to a once-per-coach pass that allows both contestants to stay in the competition, with one advancing to the Knockout rounds while the other goes straight to the Playoffs.

“Stay out of this! Enough from you,” Legend then shouted at Chance, as his plan was clearly foiled.

It was then time for Dan + Shay to make a decision. “I am so proud of you both. This was definitely the most cohesive performance so far,” Dan Smyers told the duo. “I feel like your individual performances were incredible but together, it was just so locked in. I felt the energy, I felt the magic, I felt the chemistry between the two of you guys when you were singing. When we left rehearsals the other day, Shay and I were like, ‘They both deserve to win this show.’ Just like Chance said, you guys are incredible. This is a tough decision.”

“We didn’t sign up for heartbreak,” Shay Mooney. “Kyle, I feel like you’ve really come out of your shell, even from just the beginning of this. Madison, you are an absolute ray of sunshine. I can’t believe that we’re lucky enough to have you on Team Dan + Shay.”

Check out the full clip above, and find out what Dan + Shay decided to do on the next episode of The Voice, which airs on Monday (March 25) at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told, a new documentary from Jermaine Dupri, 21 Savage and Luther Campbell, premieres on Hulu on Thursday (March 21).

The documentary shares the “untold story” surrounding the popular Atlanta parties that swelled to popularity in the ’90s. Taking viewers back to the roots, the documentary details how “Freaknik” started as a spring break picnic created by Black college students at an Atlanta HBCU in 1983.

“It’s all educational. It’s Black history personally to me,” Dupri told the Associated Press. “For those who need that assurance, I would never allow my name to be involved with something that’s going to put a black eye on Atlanta or do anything that I feel like is going to set this culture backwards.”

Dupri, 21 Savage, Luther Campbell are executive producers on the documentary alongside Terry “TR” Ross, Melissa Cooper, Alex Avant and Tresa Sanders.

“It’s also a coming-of-age story,” supervising producer Deshawn Plair explained to CNN. “You were able to come of age, but not have that pressure to have to be in the spotlight, not have that pressure to have cameras all over you. I think it was just such a bit of Black joy.”

The documentary features Killer Mike, 21 Savage, Lil John, Dupri, Campbell, Too $hort, Erik Sermon, Jalen Rose, Shanti Das, former Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed and more.

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have been changed for good after starring opposite one another as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, in the upcoming Wicked duology. And in a new cast interview with Vanity Fair published Thursday (March 21) — eight months ahead of the first of the two film’s Thanksgiving premiere — the stars had nothing but kind words to say about each other.
According to the “Positions” singer, for instance, she’s been hoping to work with Erivo ever since the Harriet star sang “Stand Up” at the 2020 Academy Awards. “She’s my favorite female voice,” Grande said of her costar. “When I was watching you sing at the Oscars, I said, ‘I hope someday I get to sing with her.’”

Trending on Billboard

“I just need to say that I don’t think people realize that she’s got the chops,” said Erivo said of the pop star while holding her hand, causing Grande’s eye’s to well up, according to the publication. “I don’t think people realize how brilliant this person’s brain and voice and talent is.”

Grande and Erivo spent most of 2023 shooting Wicked in the U.K., taking a temporary pause over the summer due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. During that time away, the “Yes, And?” musician recorded her new album Eternal Sunshine, which recently debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Aside from a couple first look photos, sneak peeks at Wicked were minimal before filming wrapped earlier this year. The film’s first trailer aired during the 2024 Super Bowl broadcast, and Vanity Fair shared several new photos of the cast — which also includes Ethan Slater, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum — in costume Thursday.

Grande and Erivo, as well as director Jon M. Chu, did divulge a few details in the new interview, though. Chu confirmed that, at the insistance of his leading ladies, all of their vocals were done live on set. “When we were shooting it, those girls were like, ‘F–k the pre-records. We’re going live,’” he told the publication, although he was skeptical at first.

“There’s going to be a lot of wind in your air pipes. Is that OK?’” he’d asked, to which they responded, “‘Yeah. That’s what we do.’”

That went for all of the stunts Grande and Erivo had to perform. The Victorious alum marveled at how her counterpart was able to belt out the musical’s famously difficult numbers even though she “had a harness pulling and pushing and yanking and tugging on every nook and cranny that there is.”

Erivo also gushed to Grande, “I’m literally never going to forget you jumping on a chandelier over my head whilst singing.”

On an evening when the Piano Man’s music filled the room, it was Spaghetti & Meatballs who rolled out of the competition on Fox’s The Masked Singer.
The celebrity contestants got down for “Billy Joel Night” on Wednesday (March 20), which saw the pasta master pitted against Poodle Moth, Clock and Lizard, with the loser going home early.

Spaghetti & Meatballs dished up “Only the Good Die Young,” Clock turned back time with “Piano Man,” Lizard performed “Uptown Girl” and Poodle Moth hit “Just The Way You Are.”

Even panelist Robin Thicke got in on the action, belting out Joel’s “My Life.”

Spaghetti & Meatballs and Lizard found themselves in the bottom bracket, and in a duel for a lifeline. Both performed “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song),” but it was the Spaghetti Man who was moving out.

Before he got sent out of the competition, the Spaghetti & Meatballs helmet came off to reveal Masterchef judge and restaurateur Joe Bastianich – a personal friend of Billy Joel.

This man can sing and cook, though none of the judges were able to make the food connection.

“You have an incredible voice,” Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg remarked.

Singing, the TV personality explained, “is a passion for me my whole life. So, when I got the opportunity to do this and share with you all, I jumped on it.”

Bravo.

Bastianich as Spaghetti & Meatballs follows the exit of Savannah Chrisley (as Afghan Hound) and Kevin Hart (as Book) in this 11th season of Fox’s quirky singing competition.

Nick Cannon returns as host of The Masked Singer, which features the returning judges Thicke, McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and newbie Rita Ora, who is filling in for Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, who had a stint on London West End performing in Sunset Boulevard.
