After an extensive search, Disney has found the next Moana. Newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia will star as the titular character in the remake of the 2016 hit animated film. The 17-year-old actor hails from Sydney, Australia, and joins Dwayne Johnson in the feature, reprising his role as demigod Maui.
“I’m really excited to embrace this character because Moana is one of my favorites,” said Laga‘aia in a statement. “My grandfather comes from Fa‘aala, Palauli, in Savai‘i. And my grandmother is from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of ‘Upolu in Samoa. I’m honored to have an opportunity to celebrate Samoa and all Pacific Island peoples, and to represent young girls who look like me.”

Laga‘aia picks up the role from Auli‘i Cravalho, who voice starred in the 2016 original and will executive produce the remake. She is said to be mentoring the younger actor in the role.

Trending on Billboard

She’s also joining the family business. Her father is actor and singer Jay Laga’aia, who played Captain Typho in the Star Wars prequel movies.

Other cast for the Moana remake include Auckland, New Zealand, actor John Tui as Moana’s father, Chief Tui; Samoan-New Zealand actor Frankie Adams as Moana’s mother, Sina; and Rena Owen, who hails from Bay of Islands, New Zealand, as Gramma Tala.

Thomas Kail, director of Broadway’s Hamilton, is at the helm of the feature, which bows July 10, 2026. He also recently directed episodes of the Hulu limited series We Were the Lucky Ones.

Said the filmmaker: “I am thrilled to have met Catherine, Rena, Frankie and John through this casting process. I am humbled by this opportunity, and I cannot wait to all be on set together. And there’s no better pair to be in a canoe with than Catherine and Dwayne—actually, trio: Heihei is ready, too.”

Moana is a cornerstone movie for Disney, as the 2016 feature has been among the most streamed films in the U.S. for several years. According to Nielsen, it was the most viewed streaming movie of 2023 in the U.S. (It was No. 4 in 2022, and No. 2 in 2021 and 2020). Disney also has a separate, animated sequel to Moana due out Nov. 27.

Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia are producing via their Seven Bucks Productions. Beau Flynn is producing via FlynnPictureCo. Moana songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda is also producing after landing an Oscar nomination for the song “How Far I’ll Go.”

Season 4 of The Boys is almost here. The long-awaited fourth season of the Prime Video superhero series drops Thursday (June 13).

The Boys takes place in a world where superheroes are just as big as celebrities and politicians. The show, which is executive produced by Seth Rogen, offers a satirical look into what happens when superheroes abuse their powers instead of using them for good. (“The Boys” are a group of vigilantes on a quest to stop the corrupt superheroes and expose the truth about the multibillion-dollar conglomerate The Seven and Vought, which funds and manages the superheroes and keeps their dirty secrets under wraps.)

Season 2 premiered back in September 2020 and the spin-off anthology The Boys Present: Diabolical debuted on Prime Video last year. Season 3 premiered last June.

The fourth season of The Boys picks up during a chaotic year, as Victoria Neuman moves closer to the Oval Office “under the muscly thumb of Homelander.” With only months left to live, Butcher hits rock bottom — losing everything from his spot as the leader of The Boys to Becca’s son. Despite fractures within the team, The Boys “have to find a way to work together to save the world.”

Ariana Grande has broken her silence on her time with Nickelodeon following the claims of sexual harassment and toxic workplace conditions made by former child actors in the documentary Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, which streams on Max.
While talking with her “The Boy Is Mine” costar Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari on the trio’s Podcrushed podcast, the pop star reflected on playing Cat Valentine on the network’s Victorious and Sam & Cat when she was just a teenager. “Obviously my relationship to it has been — and is currently — changing,” she said in the Wednesday (June 12) episode. “I’ve been reprocessing a lot of what the experience was like.”

“I think that the environment needs to be made safer if kids are going to be acting, and I think there should be therapists,” continued Grande, who was cast on Victorious when she was just 14 years old. “I think there should be parents allowed to be wherever they wanna be.”

The interview comes about three months after the arrival of the docuseries, which explored multiple claims from former Nickelodeon employees about the network’s sets allegedly being rife with sexism, racism and inappropriate/predatory behavior involving underage stars and crew. The documentary also suggested that head producer Dan Schneider’s shows tended to put young women such as Grande in comedic situations with overt sexual implications. (Schneider filed a defamation lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery and the other companies behind the docuseries in May, arguing that Quiet on the Set incorrectly implied that he sexually abused the child performers he worked with.)

“It’s really taken advantage of how much it means to the young performer to get a laugh,” the “Yes, And?” artist told Badgley and his co-hosts. “We were convinced [that] was the cool thing about [Victorious]: We pushed the envelope with our humor, the innuendos. It just all happened so quickly, and now looking back on some of the clips, I’m like, ‘D–n, really?’”

“You think about it, ‘If I had a daughter …,’” she added. “There’s a bottom line. The things that weren’t approved for the network were snuck onto our website. That is another discovery. Going into it, I guess I’m upset.”

Grande also revealed that the Victorious casts’ parents were, for most of her time on the show, only occasionally allowed to be on set with their children. She also pointed out that young people in all industries, not just Hollywood, deal with inappropriate bosses and sexual harassment, and she’s glad that society is starting to push for better conditions.

“The survivors who have come forward, there’s not a word for how devastating that is to hear about,” she concluded. “I think the environment just needs to be made a lot safer all around. Like I said, I’m still, in real-time, reprocessing my relationship to it.”

Steve Carell loves Taylor Swift, and he isn’t just a bandwagon fan, either. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Monday (June 10), the actor opened up about meeting the pop star for the first time many years ago, revealing the moment he knew he was going to be a lifelong Swiftie.
According to Carell, he and Swift first crossed paths when they both appeared on MTV’s TRL, hosted by Carson Daly. “[It was] early on in my career and hers, too,” the Despicable Me star said. “I met her sort of in passing, and I thought, ‘Boy, she seems special.’ Even back then. Very sweet, very nice, just had a really nice first impression.”

A few years later, Carell said he came across a sweet video of the “Anti-Hero” singer performing for a pediatric care patient in a hospital. “I remember seeing some video of her — and it wasn’t like a big, viral thing, it was just something I found in the recesses of the internet — it was her in a hospital, playing an acoustic guitar for a patient there,” he told Fallon.

Trending on Billboard

“It was no big crew, it was, like, a really low-key, handheld thing she did on the sly,” Carell added. “I thought, ‘That’s so cool.’ Not publicized, leading with her heart. I thought, ‘OK, I’m a fan. I am going to root for that person.’”

It’s not the first time the actor — who is currently starring in Uncle Vanya on Broadway — has expressed his admiration for Swift. In a viral moment from a 2014 interview, Carell burst into a spontaneous performance of “Shake It Off,” after which he gushed, “I love it. I actually love Taylor Swift. I think she’s great.”

A couple years prior, Swift seemingly paid tribute to Carell and his The Office castmates by parodying the show behind the scenes of her “Ours” music video shoot.

A desire to “try something hard” is what led legendary television composer Mike Post to make the first all-originals albums of his 60-year career.
Message From the Mountains & Echoes of the Delta, which came out in April, was just that for the composer. Post was part of the Wrecking Crew as a teenager, won the first of his five Grammy Awards at age 24 and has a résumé of themes and scores (literally scores of ’em) that includes The Andy Williams Show, The Rockford Files, Hill Street Blues, the Law & Order franchise and The Greatest American Hero (several of which won Grammys and resulted in singles that hit various Billboard charts). He’s also produced and co-produced a few albums, including Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 and Odd Jobs and Van Halen III, along the way.

“It’s not time consuming, but it’s what I’ve been doing all these years, making records or producing other people,” Post tells Billboard. “My day job, I work around the TV season; I go to work in September and I’m off the end of May. So I’ve just been busy with other people’s stuff.”

The Message project, Post says, was inspired by a drive through the desert during the early days of the pandemic. “I’m down a Spotify hole, and I’m listening to bluegrass,” Post recalls. “This idea struck me, ‘I wonder if anybody’s really tried to do a big piece with a five-piece bluegrass band and an orchestra.’ And I thought, ‘that would be really hard, because bluegrass players don’t read (music) and orchestras don’t jam, so how do you get them to talk to each other?’ Then I kinda laughed at myself; ‘C’mon, you haven’t done anything hard in so long.’ Not that making music for television or doing a score every week for show is easy, but it’s right there for me, it’s intuitive. So I thought, ‘Y’know, you’re the guy who did “Classical Gas” as an arranger and a producer when you were 23. You can do this. Get to work!’” (That single, performed by Mason Williams, hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won three Grammys.)

Trending on Billboard

Post built Message from short pieces of music composed on a drafting table at home. As he proceeded, he expanded his vision to include blues into the mix as well, though that portion of the piece’s second half also touches on prog rock and jazz fusion. The resulting 25-track work includes players such as banjoist Herb Pedersen, fiddler Gabe Witcher, dobroist Mike Witcher and Patrick Sauber on guitar and mandolin from the bluegrass side; and on the blues side, it includes guitarists Sonny Landreth and Eric Gales, bassist Abe Laboriel Sr. and drummer Abe Laboriel Jr. and keyboardists Robert Turner and Jon O’Hara. Amy Keys provides vocals as well as the album’s introductory spoken-word piece.

The orchestrations, meanwhile, were done over two days with an 80-piece ensemble Post assembled on the Sony scoring stage in Culver City, Calif., after pandemic restrictions lifted. “That was jaw-droppingly satisfying,” recalls Post, whose television pieces are usually assembled with synthesizers, samples and other technology. “Literally in the first two or three chunks we recorded I was like, ‘Holy sh-t, these people are players!’ They had no problem with the time. They had no problem taking licks that are not classical, that are rhythm section oriented, bluegrass or blues, and playing the hell out of them. I was blown away, (it was) more than I could have hoped for.”

Message begins with a, well, message — written by Mark Wilding (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy) and narrated by Keys — about American immigration from Europe, Ireland, Latin America and Vietnam and pointing out that “getting to the United States has never been for the faint of heart.” It wasn’t something Post anticipated, but the Pan-American approach of the piece made it an appropriate perspective for the music.

“(The album) is about how this country is so different because of its diversity, because of where everybody came from and how much they gave up to get here,” Post explains. “Art reflect life, always — that’s cliché, but it’s true. Do we really care about our fellow man…or are we just selfish? These are complex problems, and with no simple answers. We’ve really got to look to our humanity to figure out what’s right and what’s proper.”

With Message out, Post says “there are some discussions” about presenting it live but no firm plans yet. “I don’t have that performance gene,” he acknowledges. “I don’t have that thing where I’m dying to go out and play in front of an audience. However, these pieces are pretty unusual, and if there is an audience that wants to see them live, I’m interested. It would be very hard to do — and probably very expensive — but it would be worth doing because it’s so unusual.”

The endeavor has also whetted Post’s appetite to do more work of his own. He mentions blending Middle Eastern “fierceness” with “an aggressive rhythm section,” or delving into Irish flavors with an orchestra. “There are other genres that would be interesting,” he says, “and I’ve just scratched the surface of these two lanes, bluegrass and blues. There’s a lot more melody and harmony and rhythm where that stuff came from, so maybe I’m not done.”
