A dip in SiriusXM‘s paid subscribers in the first quarter caused the satellite radio giant’s stock to fall by more than 7% on Tuesday (April 30), even as first-quarter revenue beat analysts’ expectations.
The company reported that first-quarter revenue inched 0.8% higher to $2.16 billion — analysts polled by the London Stock Exchange were expecting $2.13 billion — thanks mainly to a 7% uptick in ad sales revenue.

Ad revenue totaled $402 million in the quarter, enough to offset a 1% decline in subscription revenue, which came in at $1.68 billion and contributes nearly 80% of the company’s overall earnings.

A 1.4% decline in self-pay subscribers to 31.58 million customers in the quarter contributed to “slightly higher churn” as an increase in sales of vehicles with existing subscriptions led to those subscribers shifting into unpaid trials, SiriusXM CFO Tom Barry said on a call with analysts.

Executives reiterated their 2024 guidance and said they expected improvements in their subscription revenue, trial subscriptions and ad revenue in the second half of the year.

Despite the rollout of a new and costly streaming app with features SiriusXM says allow it to tailor content to subscribers, executives faced questions from analysts over what will charge future growth.

“On the business side, it’s really about reinvigorating demand,” SiriusXM CEO Jennifer Witz said on the call. “It’s taking longer than we’d hoped in terms of the rollout of the new platform and our ability to capitalize on improvements in marketing. But the key opportunities to build demand … are clear, across price, discovery and control, and we have this multipronged effort to [drive] these things.”

The company is hopeful that the revamped app, which launched in December and costs $9.99 per month, will attract new subscribers and drive revenue growth.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) rose 4% to $650 million. The company’s gross profit edged 0.6% higher to $1.13 billion, while the gross profit margin held flat at 53% in the quarter compared to last year. Total operating expenses held roughly flat at $1.73 billion.

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway is a big investor in SiriusXM, having purchased nearly 9.7 million shares worth approximately $44 million last fall and then another 1.9 million shares worth $50 million of its tracking stock earlier this month.

In February, SiriusXM laid off 3% of its workforce affecting around 170 workers at the company, which said the cuts would enable it to invest in content and new technologies.

SiriusXM’s stock closed at $2.92 on Tuesday (April 30), down 7.2%.

French music streamer Deezer reaped the benefits of its price increases as its first-quarter revenues grew 15.0% to 132.5 million euros ($143.5 million at the average exchange rate for the period). Average revenue per user (ARPU) also improved for direct subscribers and business-to-business subscribers from partners including Brazilian mobile carrier TIM and French retailer Fnac Darty.
Deezer raised subscription prices in France, its largest market, in January 2022 and other markets later in the year. After Apple, Amazon, YouTube and Spotify all followed with their own increases, Deezer raised its prices again in September 2023.

In the first quarter, ARPU for direct subscribers grew 6.4% to 5.1 euros ($5.50) as the latest price increase was implemented for over 75% of them, while ARPU from partnerships improved 5.5% to 2.9 euros ($3.1). Both ARPU figures have grown considerably in the last two years. Since the first quarter, direct ARPU has grown 13.3% from 4.5 euros ($4.9) and partnership ARPU has improved 20.8% from 2.4 euros ($2.6).

Partnerships produced most of Deezer’s revenue growth in the quarter. While direct revenue from paid subscriptions grew 5.2% to 86 million euros ($93.1 million), partnerships revenue grew 40.3% to 43.3 million euros ($46.9 million); Deezer provides its streaming platform for its partners’ branded products. The company attributed partnerships growth to a recent deal with Mercado Libre in Latin America, RTL in Europe and Sonos. The company also renewed deals with TIM and Fnac Darty in the quarter. 

The first quarter improvement “highlights clear momentum and evidence that our strategy is on point,” said interim CEO Stu Bergen in a statement. “By delivering unique experiences to music fans worldwide, Deezer delivers value and innovation to all our stakeholders. We continue to be a catalyst for positive change, challenging the status quo in remuneration and pricing, while maintaining our unwavering support for artists and songwriters.”

France accounted for the majority of Deezer’s revenue (57.4%), though revenue in the country grew just 8.5% to 76.1 million euros ($82.4 million) from the prior-year period. Revenue in the rest of the world jumped 25.2% to 56.4 million euros ($61.1 million) and accounted for 42.6% of revenue, up from 39.1% of revenue in the first quarter of 2023. 

Although a relatively minor player on the global music streaming stage, Deezer has been influential in the music industry’s efforts to make streaming a more sustainable endeavor for musicians. In 2023, Universal Music Group partnered with Deezer for an artist-centric royalty scheme that aims to provide better royalties for professional musicians. Independent rights group Merlin followed in March.

Part of providing better remuneration to professional artists is removing non-music tracks (also called functional music) from the platform and Deezer’s earnings release confirmed the company has removed over 26 million tracks (non-artist content, noise and duplicates) since October 2023. The company also “enforc[es] a stricter provider policy to ensure exceptional quality content and elevate the user experience,” according to the release. 

Looking ahead, Deezer maintained its previous guidance given in February: Adjusted EBITDA is expected to be better than -15 million euros (-$16.2 million) — about half of the -29 million euros (-$31 million) in 2023 — and revenue growth is expected at 10%, which would be an improvement from the 7.4% revenue growth it saw in 2023. 

What began as a music-only streaming platform evolved into a broader audio platform that included podcasts and audiobooks. Now, Spotify is venturing into video — in both snippets and long-form content, although the latter is only in an experimental phase.   
During Tuesday’s Q2 earnings call, CEO Daniel Ek and interim CFO Ben Kung repeatedly referred to “the Spotify Machine” when explaining the company’s expansion beyond music. As Ek explained, the term means the company “isn’t just a sort of one-trick pony anymore, but it’s actually multiple verticals working together” to create more choice for consumers and drive more engagement.

“Because you may come for the music and stay for the audiobooks,” Ek said. “Some customers may come for the podcast and stay for the audiobooks.”

The term makes sense: Spotify is an increasingly complex product with multiple moving parts, numerous audio and video formats, and a variety of paid tiers. Each new component to the machine is meant to make the company more valuable as a whole. Similarly, concert promoter and ticketing company Live Nation uses the term “flywheel” to describe how its various products and business segments provide momentum for the larger entity. But “the machine” has a better ring to it.  

The machine is integral to becoming a sustainable, profitable company. As Spotify detailed in its 2022 investor day presentation, branching out from music will help improve its gross margins and become the profitable company it has long aspired to be. Music margins are roughly 30% of revenue — the remaining 70% goes to rights holders — and will top out at 35%, the company has said. At that 2022 presentation, Spotify said podcast margins can reach 40-50% gross margin and overall gross margin can get to 40% (gross margin rose to 27.6% in Q1 from 25.2% a year earlier).  

The machine helps increase engagement. Spotify is more valuable if people spend more time using it. When engagement increases, churn decreases, which in turn reduces the expense involved in bringing those lapsed customers back. When engagement increases, free users are more likely to become paid subscribers. The last thing a streaming service wants is an infrequent customer who doesn’t enjoy the features or delve deep into its content. Audiobooks are a good example of keeping people hooked: Ek said that in the markets where audiobooks are available, 25% of users are listening to them. What’s more, in the first two weeks a Spotify user listens to audiobooks, Spotify sees “over two and a half hours of incremental usage on the audiobook side,” he said. 

The machine gives users greater freedom of choice. Ek confirmed Spotify will have an audiobook-only subscription tier along with a music-only tier; the standard subscription tier offers both music and audiobooks. Over the years, Spotify has given consumers multiple options to choose from: an individual plan, a two-person plan called Duo, a multi-user family plan, and, in certain markets, the ability to purchase one day at a time. Spotify wants to provide “as much flexibility as possible in this next stage of Spotify” to convert more users to paid subscribers, Ek explained.  

The machine is built to maximize value. Ek and Kung frequently mentioned a particular internal metric, a value-to-price ratio, that Spotify uses as a North Star these days. By adding podcasts, audiobooks and education, as well as features such as Wrapped — Spotify’s personalized year-end recap — Spotify delivers more value than it provided when it was a simpler, music-only service. Ek singled out the videos that Spotify has added in “11 or 12” markets and built anticipation for video clips that will allow artists to tell stories about their new releases. Such videos are one way Spotify is “focused on winning discovery” to make the platform a better listening experience, Ek said. Spotify’s recent foray into educational video courses in the U.K. is another stab at adding value.  

The machine ultimately gives Spotify the ability to raise prices. When Spotify adds products and features, EK explained, it increases its value-to-price ratio. That, in turn, allows it to occasionally raise prices to capture the value it created. “The way you should think about this as investors is the better we can improve the product, the more people engage with our product, and the more value we ultimately create,” Ek said. “And the more value we create, the more ability we will have to then capture some of that value by price increases.” After more than a decade of value creation and stagnant prices, Spotify raised rates in July 2023. In April, it again hiked rates in select markets — including the United Kingdom and Australia — and is expected to expand those increases to additional markets.  

The machine also requires a feat of engineering. “It’s a fairly complex machine,” Kung said, because Spotify has both variable-cost models, such as revenue sharing and per-hour royalties, and fixed-cost models — some in-house and licensed podcast content, perhaps. Ek added that “the machine takes care of all the complexity on the back end to deal with what was historically a very difficult problem to solve, which is multiple business models in one consumer experience.” Spotify’s engineering challenge is incorporating additional verticals into a seamless user experience without getting clunky — a criticism often launched at iTunes, which started as a music store and added videos, books, apps, podcasts and iTunes U, a place for educational materials. “Simplicity is hard,” a former Apple product designer once wrote. “Very hard. But when you get it, it’s beautiful.”

The machine might take some getting used to. As Spotify branches out to non-music verticals, it has stakeholders other than the music rights holders, artists and songwriters it has served for more than a decade. Now, Spotify also supports podcasters, authors and — although in the early stages — educators. That has already created some tension between music publishers and Spotify following news that Spotify considers its music-audiobook subscription offering to be a bundle under the Phonorecords IV mechanical rate structure in the United States. Subscription bundles allow Spotify to pay a slightly lower royalty rate. But really, is anybody surprised that the machine is trying to save a little money?

How to Watch ABC Without a TV Provider

Don’t have cable? You can watch ABC through an HD antenna like one of these options here from Amazon. Another option that’ll give you access to watch ABC without cable is Hulu + Live TV. A subscription gets you more than 95 live TV channels such as ABC, to watch live sports, TV series and specials whenever you want. You also get access to the entire Hulu on-demand library (including select ABC content available to watch the day after it airs).

Don’t have a Hulu + Live TV subscription? Right now, the streamer is offering a rare free trial that’ll get you your first three days free. Once the free trial is over, you’ll be charged the regular subscription fee of $77 a month.

For even more content options, Hulu + Live TV includes a subscription both Disney+ and ESPN+, which will give you access to more sports coverage and ESPN exclusive content.

How to Watch ABC Online Without Cable for Free

There are a few more live TV streamers that will let you watch ABC online for free or for a discounted price. Check below to find the right option for your viewing needs.

DirecTV Stream

DirecTV Stream is giving new users a five-day free trial when you sign up for one of the four packages offered. Every package includes ABC to let you livestream the NBA playoffs and more from your couch or smart device.

The streamer is also offering additional savings of $30 when you combine any of its packages with a “Sports Pack.” The cheapest option is the Entertainment + Sports Pack, which is discounted to $85 (reg. $95) for the first three months. You’ll have access to ABC to watch the NBA finals and playoff games leading up to the big night as well as local channels, unlimited DVR storage and the ability to stream on three devices simultaneously.

Once the three months are up you’ll be charged the subscription price based on what package you choose at checkout.

Sling TV

Sling TV is offering new users $10 off their first month with any of its three packages, which cuts the cost down to as low as $30 (reg. $40). You can choose from: the Orange, Blue or Orange + Blue Package. ABC is only offered on the Blue Package, but you can watch simulcasted games on ESPN3 (which is only offered on Sling’s Orange Package). Rather than choose between the two, you can combine the two for $45 (reg. $55) with the Orange + Blue Package, which will give you access to all 68 channels, DVR storage and the ability to stream on up to three devices.

Fubo TV

FuboTV is another affordable live TV streamer as it comes with a seven0day free trial for new users who sign up. You’ll have access to at least 100 channels (including ABC) as well as 1,000 hours of DVR and the option to stream on 10 devices at once. For 4K definition, you can upgrade to the Premium Plan, which also includes free Paramount+ with Showtime.

Once the free trial is over, you’ll be charged $80 for the Pro Plan (the cheapest option), $90 for the Elite Plan and $100 for the Premium Plan.
