Jay-Z might be adding an English Premier League team to his roster, as the club’s current owner is in hot water with the U.S. government.

According to Yahoo, the Hip-Hop icon and business mogul is interested in being an owner of Tottenham Hotspur F.C., the Premier League soccer club. The news comes as its owner, British billionaire Joe Lewis, was charged with engaging “in multiple schemes to violate the securities laws through insider trading and submitting false and misleading filings with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission,” according to the unsealed indictment. Out on $300 million bail after appearing in a federal court in New York last Wednesday (July 26th), Lewis is charged with 16 counts of security fraud and three counts of conspiracy for alleged crimes between 2013 and 2021.

Related Stories

As initial news of Lewis’ legal troubles began last October, the club issued a statement that he was “no longer a person with significant control at the club”. It raises the potential for the club to be purchased, with a current valuation of $2.8 billion by
Forbes along with the fact that other Premier League clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool are under American ownership. Another selling point is the team’s star, striker Harry Kane, who is one of the best players in the world and the captain of England’s national men’s team.
Jay-Z, who would make a bid along with other investors, has been interested in owning a soccer team since 2010 when he made inquiries about buying a stake in Tottenham’s North London rivals, Arsenal. “I don’t know a lot about the business of soccer, but in the future if the right opportunity presented itself, then who knows,” he said at the time. Roc Nation has been active in Italy’s Serie A, recently signing a deal with the professional league. “He believes this is achievable, especially with the backing of fellow investors,” an unnamed associate of Jay-Z expressed. The consensus of observers is that he and his team are waiting to see the outcome of Lewis’ trial, for which a date hasn’t been set yet. The rapper and his representatives did not comment when contacted by reporters.

A year in to Spotify’s partnership with FC Barcelona and the music streamer and leading European soccer club are now focused on evolving the sponsorship deal to create “cultural moments” through sports and music collaboration.

“One year ago, we said this would be more than a partnership because we like to say that Barça is more than a club and that’s important because it’s our motto but also important when it comes to partnerships,” says Sergi Ricart, chief marketing and revenue officer, FC Barcelona. “It’s been a pioneer strategic partnership. The engagement of new audiences with the club and the engagement that the content we created has seen, it’s been massive.”

The deal — touted as a new way for the streaming giant to amplify artists across the globe — spans four seasons for team shirts and three seasons for training shirts. It will also rebrand FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium as Spotify Camp Nou, following an extensive redevelopment project that’s scheduled to be ready for the 2024-2025 season. The partnership kicked off with two major artist campaigns featuring Drake‘s OVO and Rosalía‘s Motomami logos, respectively, on the Blaugrana team jerseys. Rosalía’s logo was the first to be featured on both the men’s and women’s teams home kits as part of the partnership.

Following the unveiling of Rosalía’s match kit on March 15, searches for “Rosalía” and “Motomami” on Spotify increased by over 100% globally and by nearly 200% in Spain (compared to searches on March 14), according to the streaming company. Moreover, in the hour after the El Clásico match ended on March 19, global streams of Rosalía tracks climbed on Spotify in multiple markets globally, including Egypt where the tracks saw a more than 220% boost, 170% in Morocco and almost 70% in Nigeria.

“Rosalía’s El Clásico match kit drove streams and awareness because that match has two or three times more global eyeballs than the Super Bowl. These artists are getting fully integrated campaigns and it’s stuff that is enormous in marketing value,” explains Marc Hazan, vp partnerships, Spotify.

Now, with the partnership in its second year, artists such as Anitta and Fuerza Regida have visited the training facilities for the making of the Barça on Tour summer playlist . And, during the team’s stop in L.A. on July 26 for their match against Arsenal, Daddy Yankee toured the Spotify studio with Barcelona players in tow where he showed them a behind-the-scenes-look at his recording process. Additionally, the partnership will support artists on the LED boards during the Barcelona matches while on the U.S. tour.

“We’re creating a cultural moment and for the club it’s so important,” adds Ricart. “We humbly think that we’re the biggest global sports brand but how can we move into a cultural brand and with the support of this partnership we are moving that way.”

Following its more than 20 global activations during the 2022-2023 season, Hazan is looking to tap into different markets immersing in different genres. “This is a long partnership for Spotify, we’re very invested,” he says. “It’s fair to say that football and music are two great passions, so to combine the two is something pretty unique and when you have Barcelona, arguably one of the biggest clubs with a massive following, you’re in a position where they want to partner heavily and there’s a full set of music rights available, that doesn’t come up every day.”

Sia has added another empowering anthem to her discography. The singer debuted her new song “Champion” during FOX Sports’ coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 on Wednesday night (July 26), when the USA faced off against the Netherlands — which ended in a 1-1 tie. Washington Commanders fans can finally celebrate. The Dan Snyder nightmare is over.
Spotted on The New York Times, the NFL has approved the $6 billion sale of the Washington Commanders to a group led by Josh Harrison, a private equity billionaire. That group also includes real estate mogul Mitchell Rales and Magic Johnson, who is already part of other ownership groups for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, and Los Angeles Football Club.
Harrison will pay the Commanders’ now former scandal-plagued owner Dan Snyder, $6.05 billion, which is now the richest sale of any American sports team, surpassing the $4.65 billion sale of the Denver Broncos, to a group led by the Walmart heir Rob Walton. The sale should be finalized by Friday.
The $6.05 billion sale is a significant come-up for Snyder, who bought the team for $800 million in 1999.
“Josh will be a great addition to the NFL., “Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement announcing the vote, adding, “I know he has a commitment to winning on the field, but also to running an organization that everyone will be proud of — and to making positive contributions in the community.”
“This franchise is part of who I am and who I am a person,” Harrison said, revealing he grew up rooting for the franchise. “A new era of Washington football is here.”

In an interview with The Today Show’s Craig Melvin, Johnson got emotional while speaking about being an African American in an NFL owner’s box, which is still sadly rare in a league featuring predominately Black players.
“I’m going to excel not only for myself and my family but for all African Americans, making sure we can see ourselves in these seats,” Johnson said while getting emotional.

Washington Commanders Fans Are Lighting Up The Dan Snyder Pack
As expected, the fans of the Washington Commanders were happy to see Snyder go. The once-prestigious organization has not sniffed a Super Bowl title since the 80s and 90s, and under Snyder’s tumultuous 24-year run as owner, saw the postseason six times and only won two playoff games.
With new ownership, fans hope to get a brand-new stadium and a return to glory.

You can see more reactions to the Washington Commanders finally being sold in the gallery below.

Starting Friday, fans will gain a deeper understanding as to why Curry was thought of as an underrated player. While being tall is considered an asset and practically a requirement within the professional basketball world, Curry has proven that skill and height don’t always equate to being the most successful. Standing at 6’3″, the NBA player has more than proven his worthiness going from an “undersized college player to a four-time NBA champion,” according to the documentary’s description.

The film will feature archive footage as well as intimate interviews with Curry and those close to him. Emmy-winning director Peter Nicks helms the documentary, and is known for his immersive camera work and vérité style, which means fans can expect to get up close and personal to Curry throughout the feature.

Steph Curry makes shots, no matter the sports. The NBA superstar made a hole-in-one during a celebrity golf tournament, adding another clip to his already impressive highlight reel.

On Saturday (July 15), Chef Curry made a hole-in-one at the American Century Championship celebrity tournament in Stateline, Nevada. Of course, a clip of the shot made it online and Curry can be seen hitting the golf ball, watching the drive and then excitedly sprinting down the fairway at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course to the green while celebrating like he just hit one of his NBA game-winners. He also slapped the flagstick for good measure.

“That was wild,” Curry told ESPN about the shot. “It was good contact, right at the stick, but even if you’re painting the flag and it looks good, you never really expect it to go in. I just saw a bunch of hands go up, and then you just kind of black out.”
When golf and Black people are involved, we thoroughly approve.
“Shooters Shoot!!! Hole In One vibes out here in Lake Tahoe,” wrote Curry on Twitter along with a photo of his scorecard after his feat.
Other celebrities participating in the golf tournament include Charles Barkley, Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo.

The dividing line between music fans and sports fans was all but erased at the 31st annual ESPY Awards, which were presented at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday (July 12). Lil Wayne opened the show performing his 2008 hit “A Milli.” H.E.R. performed her latest single, the elegant power ballad “The Journey,” as a tribute to the 30th anniversary of basketball coach Jimmy Valvano’s inspirational speech at the first ESPYS in 1993 when he was terminally ill with cancer.
Several other music stars were also on board for the three-hour show, which was telecast on ABC. Quavo and Lil Dicky were among the presenters. Common narrated a segment paying tribute to Liam Hendriks, who battled back from Stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Angel Reese, who won best breakthrough athlete for leading the Louisiana State University women’s basketball team to the college title this past spring, has become a pop-culture star. Reese recently made a cameo in Latto’s “Put It On Da Floor Again” music video, in which featured act Cardi B raps, “I been ballin’ so damn hard could’ve went to LSU.”

This is the second year in a row that a woman has won in the gender-neutral best breakthrough athlete category. Skier Eileen Gu won last year. This is the first time in the history of the ESPYS that women have won back-to-back awards in this category.

Reese competed in the category with Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark, her NCAA finals foe. But Clark also won an award this year – best college athlete, women’s sports.

Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs won two awards – best athlete, men’s sports and best NFL player. The Chiefs also won as best team. Argentina soccer superstar Lionel Messi also won two awards – best championship performance and best soccer player.

ESPN sports analyst Pat McAfee gave an opening monologue, though there was no formal host, due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.

The show, which was co-produced by ESPN and Full Day Productions, was a lot like a music awards show in a couple of respects. Even with a generous three-hour time slot, it ran over by about 10 minutes. And only eight competitive awards were announced on the show. The other 14 competitive awards didn’t rate so much as a mention (but we have them here for you).

Here’s the full list of winners, including special awards and sports humanitarian awards.
