Serena Williams shared a funny anecdote about trying to deposit a very large check at a drive-thru during her career.
Tennis great Serena Williams was beloved and respected for her drive, but in a recent interview, she shared a story about how her focus led her to have a mishap at a bank’s drive-thru window.
Williams was the guest on a recent episode of the highly popular Hot Ones series from First We Feast. During the interview, as Williams got to dig in on some spicy wings, at the 11-minute mark host Sean Evans asked: “Is it true that you rarely collected your winnings your first year on tour and then once tried unsuccessfully to cash your first million-dollar check in a drive-thru ATM?”

“Yeah, those are all true,” the 23-time Grand Slam champion confirmed. “I never played for money, I played ’cause I loved the sport. I wanted to be the best. I wanted to win.” She continued, saying: “So my tax guy, he would be like, ‘You didn’t get your money?’ and I’d be like, ‘Oh, I didn’t get that one in Zurich,’ ‘Oh, I forgot that one in Moscow,’…I was just playing to win, and if I didn’t win, I wasn’t thinking. I was just so angry, that I wanted to find a way to get better and win the next time.”
It turned out that her focus led her to collect a very substantial amount of earnings. “I got my check and it was a million dollars,” Williams said. “Like, okay, I’m gonna go deposit it. I’d never really spent a lot of money. I was so serious. I don’t know what happened to me, I used to be serious. So I just went through the drive-thru … and the guy was like, ‘Uh, I think you need to come inside for this.’” Evans and Williams laughed as she said, “lessons to learn.”
The story was one of a few notable anecdotes that Williams shared, including a look at the stylish outfits she wore during her career including a denim suit she said was inspired by one that another tennis champion, Andre Agassi, wore on the court. Her Hot Ones appearance comes as her ESPN+ documentary series, In The Arena: Serena Williams makes its debut on Wednesday (July 10).

Drake is making it known who he’s hoping takes home the victory, as the rapper reportedly bet $300,000 for Canada to win over the Lionel Messi and the Argentinian team, according to ESPN FC on X.

For a while now professional boxer Ryan Garcia has been alienating his fans whether it be because of his unwavering support of Donald Trump or simply acting a fool.
Now, the embattled boxer has gone off the deep end with his MAGA-ish racism as he took to X Space and went on a crazy hateful rant against Black people for no apparent reason, and it will cost him dearly.
According to Yahoo, Garcia shocked listeners and supporters when he and a few associates were chopping it up on X Space. Garcia suddenly decided to let the N-word fly in a hateful filled rant in which he said, “I hate n*****s, I’m anti-Black … N*****, I’m KKK, I hate n*****s … Hey, let’s go bring George Floyd back to life and kill that n***** again.’”
We’re not sure which chapter of the KKK allows Mexican-Americans to join their racist organization, but apparently Garcia thinks he found one.
Continuing to spew his unfiltered hate for all to hear, Garcia went on to include Muslims on his sh*t list saying, “f*ck all you Muslim a** f*ckin’ weird a** f*cks.” When told that he would regret saying all these things, Garcia responded saying, “I will never be touched because I’m with God. I’m with Jesus.”

After Garcia’s comments went viral the World Boxing Council decided to take action and expelled Garcia.

Only a few hours later, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman announced he was expelling Garcia from his organization. He also mentioned that Garcia had declined multiple attempts by the WBC to provide help with mental health and substance abuse.
Garcia’s own parents later released a statement disavowing his comments and saying he needs help:
“Our son has recently made statements that do not align with his, or our family’s, true character or beliefs. Our family unequivocally does not support any statements he has made regarding race or religion — these do not reflect who Ryan truly is and how he was raised.
“Those who know Ryan can attest to this fact. Ryan has been open about his ongoing struggle with mental health over the years and as a family we are committed to ensuring and encouraging that he receives the necessary help to navigate this very challenging time and address both his immediate and long-term well-being. We appreciate the continued support, prayers and compassion.”
Yeah, Garcia needs help. From claiming he was taken to Bohemian Grove where he was forced to watch kids being raped by rich and powerful men to claiming he knows who killed Tupac—and has proof of it—Ryan Garcia’s been on some sh*t for quite some time.

Caitlin Clark’s much-anticipated next game with the Indiana Fever will take place tonight (July 2) against the defending WNBA champs Las Vegas Aces, with the basketball game airing live at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT on ESPN. Clark and her team dominated June with a 7-4 record and hope to continue their winning streak into the new month. Whether or not it was their intention, Newsweek got quite a bit of negative attention last week for publishing an opinion piece by writer John Mac Ghlionn that criticized Taylor Swift for being “not a good role model” due to her status as “unmarried and childless.” Now, Martina Navratilova is leading the charge against the author’s views, which she slammed as being “a massive pile of misogynistic bull” on X Sunday (June 30).
“This guy should be ashamed of himself and I can’t believe he writes for Newsweek…and they printed it,” the tennis champion wrote. “I mean…”
Navratilova also pointed out in the replies: “Taylor never claimed she was a role model.”

The former Olympian’s comments come in response to Ghlionn claiming in his piece — which was simply titled Taylor Swift Is Not a Good Role Model — that the public “must ask if [Swift’s] personal life choices are ones we want our sisters and daughters to emulate.”
Why? Because, as the writer put it, “at 34, Swift remains unmarried and childless, a fact that some might argue is irrelevant to her status as a role model … But, I suggest, it’s crucial to consider what kind of example this sets for young girls.”
Ghlionn also took issue with the 14-time Grammy winner writing songs that he claims “depict her as the victim” and promoting what he sees as “romantic promiscuity” through her public relationships.
Navratilova is just one of countless people to comment that the opinion piece is rife with sexist connotations, while The Standard recently published a counterargument pointing out that male pop stars almost never receive the same type of critique.
“To claim that Swift’s power as a role model is diminished by those mediaeval metrics is pure misogyny,” added writer Claire Cohen. “It positions a woman’s worth in terms of her duty towards men and sends us back to an era in which we were little more than walking wombs … And no doubt if Swift was married with children, she’d be criticized for leaving her family at home while she selfishly went on tour and accused of emasculating her husband by being the breadwinner.”
Billboard has reached out to Newsweek for comment.
So far, Swift herself hasn’t responded to Newsweek’s article. The “Fortnight” singer – who’s been open for years about her stance as a feminist as well as her experiences battling sexist commentary — is currently busy on the European leg of her global Eras Tour, which most recently wrapped three nights in Dublin.
