For this year’s update of our ongoing Greatest Pop Star by Year project, Billboard is counting down our staff picks for the top 10 pop stars of 2022 all this week. At No. 6, we remember the year in Lizzo — who once again used a runaway viral smash as a springboard to total pop cultural ubiquity.
The year 2022 was not just a ‘Special’ one for Lizzo – it was the year she proved that she could navigate and command the pop landscape alongside splashy newcomers and veterans alike.
Three years removed from her seismic breakthrough with Cuz I Love You, Lizzo had entered the new decade unproven as a major force in pop music. In 2021, she unveiled “Rumors,” a Cardi B-assisted standalone single that debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and fizzled out too quickly to really maintain the excitement from her previous hit singles “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell.” But the brief silence that followed would eventually give way to a year that yielded Lizzo the fastest-moving and highest-charting album of her career — while she expanded her reach in different fields of entertainment and cultivated a coherent and powerful public image to complement her pop stardom.
Billboard’s Greatest Pop Stars of 2022:Introduction & Honorable Mentions | Rookie of the Year: Steve Lacy | Comeback of the Year: Sam Smith | No. 10: Nicki Minaj | No. 9: Future | No. 8: Jack Harlow | No. 7: Doja Cat
When Lizzo reemerged in 2022, she chose television, not music, as her entry point. Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, an unscripted reality competition series chronicling the journey to becoming one of Lizzo’s dancers, debuted on Amazon Prime — her first project under her production deal with Amazon Studios. Lizzo smartly used the launch of the show, which was met with a generally positive critical reception, to launch her proper return to the music scene. A day before Watch Out for the Big Grrrls went live, Lizzo announced the release date for “About Damn Time.”
The following week, in a move straight from the playbook of pop titans past and present, Lizzo previewed yet another venture: This time, she was entering the world of shapewear with Yitty, her collaboration with Fabletics. Through a series of smartly sequenced announcements and releases, Lizzo reemerged as a full-fledged pop star — one whose brand permeated different industries and yielded successful returns in each.
By April, Lizzo fixed her attention squarely on music. “About Damn Time,” an uplifting disco-tinged anthem of affirmation, was released on April 15, alongside the announcement of its parent album, Special. With a quiet debut at No. 50, “About Damn Time” got off to a much slower start on the Hot 100 than “Rumors.” Nonetheless, Lizzo used the familiarity and bottled momentum she accrued on TikTok in 2020 to inform her aggressive promotion of the song on the platform. Thanks largely to added exposure from a dance trend created by TikTok personality Jaeden Gomez, “About Damn Time” reached the Hot 100’s top 10 in its fourth week.
In a move that shifted Lizzo’s promotional approach from that of a mid-level pop star to one that more closely mirrored a superstar’s, she tapped into how the song connected with audiences on an emotional and political level. Obviously, “About Damn Time” made people feel good, hence the cute dances that Lizzo would often stitch and repost on her official TikTok page. But she also knew that the song would make people feel empowered: In an April 8 TikTok, Lizzo used a snippet of “About Damn Time” to celebrate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s historic appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. During her performance of the song at the 2022 BET Awards, Lizzo proclaimed, “It’s about damn time we stand in our power. Black people, my people.” This combination of marketing savvy and innate ability to make music that can mean different things to different audiences at different times resulted in “About Damn Time” becoming both Lizzo’s second Hot 100-topper in late July, and ultimately one of the defining hits of 2022.
When “About Damn Time” reached the pole position on the Hot 100, its parent album, Special, zoomed to a No. 2 finish on the Billboard 200. Although the set earned a less rapturous reception than its predecessor, Special earned the best first week of Lizzo’s career so far, with 69,000 units moved. Special debuted alongside “Lizzoverse,” a Twitch-streamed cosmic light show extravaganza that found Lizzo tapping into yet another media platform to expand the reach of her music and brand.
Although Special was blocked from the top of the Billboard 200 by Bad Bunny’s monstrous Un Verano Sin Ti, the album’s strong performance proved that Lizzo had built herself a legion of fans that were guaranteed to show up for her, regardless of whether her albums were packed with buzzy guest artists. Special also spawned one more minor hit in “2 B Loved (Am I Ready),” which Lizzo spotlighted in a characteristically impressive performance in a medley with “Time” at the MTV Video Music Awards in August. Outside of hit singles, the Special campaign showed how deftly Lizzo could maneuver controversy after, she humbly changed a lyric in “Grrrls,” one of the set’s promotional singles, that was criticized as ableist.
Although the singles campaign for Special seemed to end with “2 B Loved,” Lizzo remained a leading pop culture figure in 2022, and she only continued to amass more cultural capital. In September, Lizzo embarked on her first headlining arena tour; the tour boasted openers such as Latto and Saucy Santana, two rappers who each turned 2022 into career-defining years, and surprise guests at different stops, including Missy Elliott (“Tempo”), Cardi B (“Rumors”), and SZA (“Special”).
A week into the tour, Lizzo, a classically trained flautist, found herself at the center of a firestorm of controversy when she played James Madison’s 209-year-old crystal flute while twerking onstage. Ultimately, the controversy didn’t stick because, as the Library of Congress tweeted, Lizzo’s performance with the historic instrument was “not all that unusual.” In fact, the controversy did more to expose her detractors’ own misogynoir and fatphobia – and showed that the general public would be quick to come to Lizzo’s defense. Two weeks before she launched the Special Tour, Watch Out for the Big Grrrls took home three trophies at the Primetime Emmy Awards, lifting Lizzo halfway to EGOT status.
As 2022 drew to a close, Lizzo continued to rack up awards and nominations. She earned nods for herself and “About Damn Time” at the American Music Awards, as well as triumphs at the Soul Train Music Awards (best dance performance), MTV Video Music Awards (video for good), and the People’s Choice Awards (song of 2022). At the People’s Choice Awards, Lizzo used her acceptance speech for the People’s Champion award to uplift and amplify the marginalized voices of 17 activists including Tamika Palmer, the mother of the late Breonna Taylor. Yet again, Lizzo found a way to use her passion for activism and political empowerment to continue to transcend and reinvent what pop stardom can look like.
Closing out the year with the premiere of her Love, Lizzo documentary on HBO Max, a writing credit on SZA’s acclaimed SOS album, and five Grammy nominations including album, record, and song of the year, Lizzo ends 2022 a solidified capital-letters Pop Star — and it’s about damn time.
Does Taylor Swift ever take a day off? On the day of her birthday Tuesday (Dec. 13), the newly 33-year-old pop star revealed that she’d celebrated the occasion by doing what she does best: working hard in the studio.
In a photo posted to Instagram on the night of her birthday, Swift sits on the floor in front of stacks of keyboards and control panels, holding up three fingers on each hand in honor of the third year of her third decade of life. Lying across her lap is a huge upright bass, while none other than her go-to producer Jack Antonoff sits to her right, holding an acoustic guitar.
“Thanks for all the beautiful wishes today!!” wrote the “All Too Well” singer in her caption. “I spent my 33rd birthday in the studio of course 😏 Wouldn’t have it any other way. Love you!”
In the past three years, Swift has released five albums, two re-releases (Fearless and Red) and three brand new LPs (Folklore, Evermore and Midnights). Add to the mix her one-off song “Carolina,” written this year for the Where the Crawdads Sing movie, and her collaborations with Big Red Machine and Ed Sheeran (“Renegade” and “Joker and the Queen,” respectively), and it’s just about impossible to predict exactly what type of project she’s recording next.
That’s exactly how Swift likes it, though — at least, that’s what the sly side-grin emoji she used could imply.
Four days prior to her birthday, it was announced that the 11-time Grammy winner would be making her debut as a feature-length film director for Searchlight Pictures. Few details about the film have been released, but Swift has already written its original script.
Then, one day before her birthday, Swift gave a gift to her fans rather than the other way around. Several Swifties who felt duped by Ticketmaster last month after walking away from the singer’s Eras Tour presale empty-handed despite receiving a special Verified Fan code by the ticketing service, woke up that morning to find that they’d been selected for a special second round of Verified Fan ticket sales.
“Taylor swift going out of her way to make sure ticketmaster gives ALL fans who got a verified boost a chance to get tickets…,” tweeted one happy fan on Monday (Dec. 12). “This is why we love her.”

For the second round of the contest, the 12 contestants were instructed to show off their chops with original songs, using their Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4, and the submissions varied in delivery. While some contestants highlighted their roots by singing in another language, others put effort into performance-style execution, pairing the mood of their tracks with their filming set. Much like their covers of BTS’ dance floor anthem, “Butter,” the dozen delivered a bit of everything sonically from sultry ballads, pop/rock offerings and feel-good odes to romance.
As with the previous round, the contestants were then ranked on a specialty Billboard chart, with one final challenge ahead of them. The last announcement will be revealed by a third celebrity mentor in the singing competition, who will join the likes of Mariah Angeliq and Flo Milli.
The winner of Samsung and Billboard’s NXT 2.0 competition will land on the cover of a special digital issue of Billboard, receive a meeting with a record label, studio time to record their first single, funding for a music video and tickets to the 2023 Billboard Music Awards. Check out each submission as part of the original song challenge, and click here to follow along for the latest on the Samsung NXT 2.0 competition.
Andrew Leonforte
Leonforte is in a better place after closing the door on a toxic romance as viewers heard in his submission song, “Better Without U.” On the pop-charged track, he delivered heightening vocals as he belted about the aftermath of the breakup.
Ellie B
To highlight her origins, Ellie opted to sing her song in Spanish and it’s clear why “Infeil” is so important to her. The reggaeton track is the very first song that she ever wrote and even jumpstarted her music career.
FIKI
FIKI put her culture on display in her submission track, “Wahala,” which is a Yoruba word that translates to “problem.” On the stripped-back song, the singer declares just how much she wants to swerve all kinds of drama.
Julian King
Trekking to an empty parking lot, King offered up his dance moves in a mini-music video style submission for “Like Me Too,” a self-love track that he wrote after his frustrations with dating in 2022.
Kyn Rose
It was a moody start to the day in Rose’s challenge video, which highlighted his original song, “Dangerous.” The silky R&B track came about after his realization about an ill-fated romantic connection.
Lordus
@iamlordus It’s been a while since my last release so I’m excited and nervous!! #ad for this week’s #SamsungNXT competition from @billboard and @samsungus , I’m giving you a little preview at an unreleased song of mine called “What Is” from my upcoming project. This song is me being as transparent and vulnerable with my personal experience with falling in love. I want whoever hears this to feel the rollercoaster of emotions it took for me to create this! Let me know if you can relate! #GalaxyZFlip4 PLEASE don’t forger to LIKE, COMMENT, & SHARE this video to let em know why I should be SAMSUNGNXT’S UNSIGNED ARTIST‼️🙃🤗😘🙏🏾 ♬ original sound – Lordus
For this round, Lordus got personal, singing her original song, “What Is,” which she compared to a page out of her diary. In her submission, the singer put a spotlight on the slow-burning cut’s adlibs as clips of her backing vocals were emphasized throughout the video.
Mar’yana Hicks
Hicks’ original track, “Heart At War,” is meant to be up for interpretation, but the contestant said the piano ballad reflects physical and spiritual struggles, and those emotions were heard loud and clear during this week’s submission.
Nicole Tortolani
Tortolani put her all into her Spanish-language track, “Me Quedé En El Aire,” a song that she produced and even filmed a music video to pair. In her submission, she delivered some light choreography to the Latin track, which she released in 2021.
Nyla XO
Nyla XO sent a message to “all the lovers” out there in her second challenge submission with “Perfect View.” The uplifting track was written with her husband in mind and captures the emotions that come about when she’s doing life with her special someone.
Peyton McMahon
McMahon created “Someone” after he was feeling a bit lonely and surrounded by people in happy relationships. For his submission video, the aspiring star brought out his guitar for the emotionally-charged pop/rock track.
Vaishalini
“Livin’ Rent Free” is Vaishalini’s unique concoction of sass, vocal layering and a perky beat to pair. The singer said she wanted to create a record that keeps in mind her overall artistic agenda: to empower her listeners.
Wampy
To complement the context of his song, “You Break My Heart,” Wampy opted for a moody bedroom set for his submission video. On the R&B-charged cut, which happens to be his very first original song, the singer put his heart on his sleeve while reflecting on a breakup.
Do you believe in miracles? One South American Mariah Carey superfan does now after the singer noticed her tweet and upgraded the woman to the front row for Tuesday night’s (Dec. 13) “Merry Christmas to All” gig at Madison Square Garden.
“Today I’m traveling from my country, which is 8.598km (5.342,55miles) away from NY, just to see my idol @MariahCarey,” wrote a fan from Uruguay named Mai on Monday, whose Twitter handle (@uruguayanlamb) made it clear that she’s a charter member of the Lambily. “I remember when I started saving for this day 5 years ago, wishing and hoping for this day. Words can’t describe my happiness rn, love u forever Mimi!”
Christmas Countess Carey noticed the long-haul love and responded in the perfect way: by giving Mai the ultimate upgrade. “I am so happy you’re going to be here!!!,” Carey responded along with a snowflake and Christmas tree emoji. “How would you like to sit in the front row for tonight’s concert??”
Mai reacted in exactly the way you might expect, responding, “OMG YESSSS YESS PLEASE,” followed by four crying eyes emoji and a trio of praying hands. “I can’t believe it I LOVE UUUUU.” As it was sinking in, Mai kept counting her blessings. “I though I was dead for a minute and then when I realized that I was alive I started crying, tears of pure joy and happiness!!!! It was the most amazing night of my life,” she said. “Thank youuuuu for being so kind.”
Mai then chronicled her great New York winter adventure, tweeting out pics from her walk around town, a shot of her holding MC’s The Christmas Princess children’s book while waiting for showtime and another of her MC-appropriate nails, and, of course, footage of the blessed event.
But it got way, way better than that. Mai tweeted that Carey dedicated a song to her during the show, which, of course, slayed her. “THE @MariahCarey just dedicated me a song. whaaat I’m dreaming, I was at the front row at her right, when I tell you the floor shaked while she sang Fly like a bird, Lord only knows!!!!!” she wrote. “HER power!!! Thank you Mimi for giving me the most amazing experience of my life.”
She later apologized to fellow Lambs for not filming much of the show, explaining that it was her first MC gig, so she wanted to really take it in (though she promised her boyfriend did take some video she will share later). In the end it was truly a night to remember.
“WHAAAAT Mimi making my wish come true, not only acknowledging my existence but inviting me to her show???” Mai wrote after the show. “When I told you several times before she is the most devoted artist to her fans I was being serious!!! I’m soooo happy rn.”
Check out the sweet back-and-forth and snaps from Mai’s adventure below.

Kehlani is speaking out after being sexually assaulted at one of her recent concerts.
The star, who just wrapped up the European stretch of their Blue Water Road Trip tour, took to their Instagram Stories on Monday night (Dec. 12) to share frustration over the situation. “I’ve made video after video after video and deleted it because I don’t want any video of me as angry, triggered, crying upset as I am anywhere,” she wrote in a since-deleted statement.
She continued, “I don’t care how sexual you deem my music, my performances, my fun with my friends dancing at clubs, or ME… That does not give any of you the right to cross a boundary like sticking your hands up my skirt & pulling my underwear to TOUCH MY GENITALS as I am being escorted through a crowd after performing. This s— made me sick to my stomach. As a victim of sexual assault, I am endlessly triggered and mindblown.”

Kehlani has been a longtime supporter of sexual assault victims as a victim herself, and has repeatedly stood up against sexual abuse and assault. “We are women, we are life, we are the life source,” they told Billboard in 2017 amid the #MeToo movement. “That can be scary for people and it can result in terrible things, but don’t forget you who came from and what you are. Don’t forget your power, don’t let any trauma take away your power. That’s easier said than done, but you got this.”

The “Raise Your Glass” singer’s mini-me is seen in the video introducing herself to the crowd, before delving into a powerful rendition of Olivia Rodrigo‘s “Rose Song,” which the Grammy winner sang on the Disney+ show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Hart effortlessly belts the ballad — without missing a single note — with her sweet, composed voice. When she wrapped up her performance, Hart was met by applause and cheers from the audience.
“This 11 year old (11,000 year old soul) blows me away,” P!nk captioned her proud mama moment.
It’s certainly not the first time Hart showed off her vocal skills. In February 2021, P!nk and her daughter unveiled their inspirational duet “Cover Me in Sunshine” after previewing it on TikTok. In a statement, P!nk explained, “This past year has been so many things for us. Sad, lonely, scary, yes. It’s also been quiet, reflective and a great teacher. Willow and I find comfort in music, so we’re putting this song out for no other reason than that we hope it brings you sweetness, sunshine and comfort, too.”
P!nk shares Willow and her five-year-old brother Jameson Moon Hart with her husband Carey Hart. The couple celebrated their 16th anniversary in January this year after tying the knot in 2006, five years after meeting at the Summer X Games in 2001.
After 2022 saw SB19 drop their first English single “WYAT (Where You At)” and head out on their first international tour of the same name, the viral Filipino boy band is heading home and celebrating with a new single.

A winter ballad, “Nyebe” (which means “Snow” in Tagalog) sees the quintet showing a more reflective and emotional side than the feel-good throwback pop in “WYAT.” Their strong vocals are front and center in the moving rock-pop production, where they discuss substantial questions about happiness, worries and living in the moment. Like most of the P-pop band’s material, “Nyebe” was composed by leader Pablo, who also co-produced the song with Filipino singer-songwriter Thyro Alfaro who also has credits on past SB19 tracks like “Win Your Heart” and “Ready, Set, G!”
Pablo creatively directs the official visualizer for “Nyebe” which documents behind-the-scenes moments from SB19’s travels through their recent Where You At World Tour that visited New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dubai and Singapore. Filmed in black-and-white, viewers see moments of the boys hanging around a fire pit and their visit to the Sony Music headquarters in NY, but also less upbeat visuals like what appears to be an unhoused person’s cardboard shelter or trash on the sidewalk. It all speaks to a message Pablo shared via press release alongside the single saying, “Time doesn’t stop, things around us happen so fast. At the end of the day…we just have to live with it and pray, there is always a ray of hope.”
SB19 confirmed they will perform “Nyebe” at their upcoming “WYAT Homecoming Concert” on Dec. 18 at the Araneta Coliseum arena in Quezon City, Philippines. Fans worldwide can buy tickets to tune in to a live stream of the concert and even upgrade to VIP to get access to watch Pablo, Stell, Justin, Ken and Josh’s soundcheck ahead of showtime.

Lizzo is feeling “Good as Hell” in her relationship with comedian Myke Wright, and she shared all her sweet feelings about her beau in a new interview with Howard Stern on his SiriusXM show.

On romantic suitors trying to shoot their shot, the “About Damn Time” singer quipped, “Don’t waste your time, honey. I am very much in love with Myke.”
The Grammy winner and the actor met in 2016 on the set of their MTV show, Wonderland, though they didn’t become romantically linked until 2021. Lizzo noted, however, that the duo did have a bit of sexual tension back when they first met. “I had a lot of s— to do, and I still was very much in my ‘I feel un-loveable’ place, and I still was very much not where I wanted to be career-wise,” she explained. “Even if a person came around that I was googly gaga about, I had these wild defenses up that made it almost impossible for a true intimate relationship to occur.”
However, when “the time was right,” they got together. “We just recently were like, ‘Oh, we’re together. This is official,’” she said. “We’re not playing any games with each other anymore. We’re very much locked in.”
When Stern asked Lizzo if she’s planning on marrying Wright, she laughed and said, “There’s nobody else I’m going to be with for the rest of my life.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Lizzo discussed her friendship with fellow superstar Adele. “She’s literally me in a different font, so it’s nice to have her,” she revealed. “I look up to her a lot. She’s done a lot, and she knows who she is, and she honors that with every album and she gives us piano ballads that go number one, which is just like so hard and rare to do. You just have to be like the rarest gem of all time to be able to do that — we need her. I am grateful for her.”
Watch below.
Missy Elliott is a big Lizzo fan — so much so, that she wrote about the “About Damn Time” singer for Entertainment Weekly‘s 2022 Entertainers of the Year list, published on Monday (Dec. 12). In it, she praised the pop star and revealed that she believes Lizzo will be “legendary.”
“I still remember the first time I met Lizzo in the studio. Instantly, I knew she was amazing. She walked in, heard the music, and just went right into the booth and started rhyming and singing — she was just wilding,” Elliott started off the essay. “That was so like me when I first got into the music business. I actually told her, ‘You remind me so much of myself.’ I immediately connected with her.”
Throughout the essay, the hip-hop icon — who previously collaborated with Lizzo on ‘Cuz I Love You track “Tempo” — praises the flautist’s talents in dancing, singing and rapping, and had glowing remarks for Special. “I love that whole album. You put it on and you’re going to learn self-love, you’re going to love your friends, and you’re going to feel like a bad b—h,” Missy Elliott wrote. “The whole thing just makes me feel happy. It feels like a little bit of disco, a little bit of Grease, a little bit of hip-hop. Actually, I could see her doing a musical off of [Special].”
The “Work It” rapper additionally remarked on Lizzo’s humble and relatable nature despite selling out arenas, and shared her predictions for the pop star’s future in music. “I believe that Lizzo is classic, and she’s going to be deemed legendary. She’s one of those artists that will always work. She’s going to sell out every single time. Anything that Lizzo wants to do, I believe she’ll be great at doing it,” Elliott concluded.
The love goes both ways. Lizzo shared her admiration for Elliott when she spoke at the icon’s Hollywood Walk of Fame induction, and most recently was surprised with a visit from Elliot during her Special Tour. Sharing a picture of the special moment, Lizzo wrote on Nov. 19, “My face after @missymisdemeanorelliott surprised us last night! Being on stage w you is a DREAM but knowing you is unfathomable! My absolute ICON! I love you 5EVA! thank you!”
