Rankings for the Top TV Songs chart are based on song and show data provided by Tunefind and ranked using a formula blending that data with sales and streaming information tracked by Luminate during the corresponding period of December 2023.

“Cake By the Ocean” appears in the third episode of teen drama series My Life With the Walter Boys, whose first season premiered Dec. 7, 2023. Its synch comes a little over eight years after the song’s initial release; the track is the Joe Jonas-fronted DNCE’s highest charting song to date, peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 2016.

In December 2023, “Cake By the Ocean” earned 8.7 million official on-demand U.S. streams and 1,000 downloads, according to Luminate.

It reigns over Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain,” which bows at No. 2 after an appearance in fellow newcomer series Fellow Travelers. The Showtime historical miniseries initially premiered in October 2023, and the episode featuring “Maggot Brain,” episode seven, first aired Dec. 10 as the penultimate edition of the show.

“Maggot Brain,” featured on Funkadelic’s 1971 album of the same name, racked up 296,000 streams in December 2023.

The most featured series on the December 2023 Top TV Songs chart is The Crown, which sports three appearances from its sixth season, episodes five through 10 of which premiered Dec. 14. Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” leads the group at No. 5 (3.3 million streams, 1,000 downloads), followed by Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better With You” at No. 7 (3.2 million streams, 1,000 downloads) and Portishead’s “Glory Box” at No. 9 (2 million streams, 1,000 downloads).

Mariska Hargitay loves her Karma. While celebrating the recent premiere of the 25th season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on TODAY With Hoda & Jenna Thursday (Jan. 18), the actress opened up about adopting her new cat and naming the feline after a Taylor Swift song.  “I love my cat,” the Emmy winner […]

Surely continuing to spark warm thoughts amid winter, Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” climbs to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart, dated Jan. 27.
The song, released on Republic Records, becomes Swift’s ninth AC leader, extending her mark for the most among all acts over the 2000s, ‘10s and ‘20s. In that span, Adele, Michel Bublé and Josh Groban rank second with six No. 1s each.

Meanwhile, “Cruel Summer” halts the record 37-week No. 1 run on Adult Contemporary of Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers.”

Here’s a recap of Swift’s nine Adult Contemporary No. 1s:

“Cruel Summer,” one week to date at No. 1, Jan. 27, 2024

“Anti-Hero,” three weeks, beginning March 25, 2023

“Delicate,” 10, Sept. 15, 2018

“Style,” two, July 11, 2015

“Blank Space,” four, Feb. 21, 2015

“Shake It Off,” nine, Nov. 22, 2014

“Mine,” one week, Dec. 11, 2010

“You Belong With Me,” 14, Oct. 31, 2009

“Love Story,” six, June 6, 2009

“Cruel Summer” was originally released on Swift’s 2019 album Lover. Republic began promoting the song as a single last June, after Swift began performing it on her The Eras Tour, her first in which she’s been able to spotlight songs from Lover, which was released shortly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The song also adds a new milestone atop the Adult Pop Airplay chart, where it logs a 20th week at No. 1, becoming just the fourth hit to have reigned for at least that long since the survey began in Billboard’s pages in March 1996. “Cruel Summer” trails only the commands of Santana’s “Smooth,” featuring Rob Thomas (25 weeks, 1999-2000), and The Calling’s “Wherever You Will Go” (23 weeks, 2001-02) and ties the rule of The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” in 2020.

Among other chart honors for “Cruel Summer,” it became the landmark 10th of Swift’s 11 career No. 1s on the all-genre, multimetric Billboard Hot 100, reigning for four weeks, and her record-breaking 12th No. 1, and her longest-leading (10 weeks), on Pop Airplay.

Plus, “Cruel Summer” is Swift’s sixth song to triple up with No. 1 ranks on Adult Contemporary, Adult Pop Airplay and Pop Airplay, joining “Anti-Hero,” “Delicate,” “Style,” “Blank Space” and “Shake It Off.” She now solely boasts the most such leaders, one-upping Adele’s five at each of the three formats (“Rolling in the Deep,” “Set Fire to the Rain,” “Hello,” “Send My Love [To Your Lover]” and “Easy on Me,” in 2011-22).

As for yet one more Swift chart feat this week, her “Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version) [From the Vault]” jumps 11-8 on Adult Pop Airplay. It becomes her record-extending 30th top 10 on the tally, further distancing herself from Maroon 5, second with 27, and P!nk (20).

All charts dated Jan. 27 will update on Billboard.com Tuesday, Jan. 23.

“Caliber” singer Coco Jones stopped by Sherri Shepherd’s syndicated show on Friday (Jan. 19) to talk about her 2024 Grammy nominations, her desire to keep holding up the R&B genre, and most importantly, to share a flawless, funny Mariah Carey impersonation.
Aware that Jones has gone viral for her impersonation skills, Shepherd cued up the “Celebrity Spin” game to test Coco’s skills at nailing a famous voice in a wacky scenario. Britney Spears ordering a latte? Nailed it. Rihanna on a roller coaster? “Oh hey now, hey now. Stop de ride, stop de ride,” Jones sang in RihRih’s signature island-soaked timbre.

Jones definitely saved the best for last, though. Asked to conjure Mariah on the phone with Shepherd’s in-house turntablist, DJ Suss One, Jones gathered her thoughts and busted out, “Hey Mr. DJ, are you gonna play my favorite song,” in a perfect Carey coo, topped by a signature sky-high MC whistle note.

The singer who is nominated for five Grammy Awards — including best R&B performance, best R&B song, best R&B album, best traditional R&B performance and best new artist — told Shepherd the very first person she called to celebrate the good news was, of course, her mom. “I called my mama when I landed,” Jones said. “My mom was the team before the team. She was the one knocking on doors on behalf of her little 9-year-old just to beg somebody to listen, so I want he to see that her sacrifice has paid off.”

The Bel-Air star also spilled on what’s next for her character Hilary Banks, promising that she will continue to “stir the pot” and “surprise you guys” in season three of Peacock’s reimagining of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The 26-year-old singer also revealed that she’s hoping to have her full-length debut album out this summer. To date, Jones has released a handful of EPs, including 2022’s What I Didn’t Tell You, which featured her only Billboard Hot 100-charting single to date “ICU,” which peaked at No. 62.

This week, Green Day returns to save something (rock and roll perhaps?), Nicki Minaj and Future reach for the remote together and Jack Antonoff scores an alt-rock ballet for his new bride. Check out all of this week’s picks below:

Green Day, Saviors

[embedded content]

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ first album since 2020’s Father of All Motherf–kers sees the trio reuniting with Rob Cavallo — producer behind most of the group’s classic albums, from 1994’s Dookie to 2004’s American Idiot — for the first time since 2012’s ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré! trilogy. Cavallo helps Green Day discover some of their size and scope after a few more back-to-basics albums, giving Saviors a feel reminiscent of their mid-’00s blockbusters. Whether the singles will ultimately measure up to skyscraping rock radio smashes like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and “21 Guns” remains to be seen, but lead single (and album opener) “The American Dream Is Killing Me” is certainly off to a good start, having spent seven weeks atop Billboard‘s Rock & Alternative Airplay chart.

Nicki Minaj feat. Future, “Press Play”

[embedded content]

The latest edition of Nicki Minaj‘s Billboard 200-topping 2023 album Pink Friday 2 is titled the “Pluto Edition” — so you could probably guess who is featured on the edition’s lone new bonus track. “Press Play” indeed features Future, who already appeared on original album highlight “Nicki Hendrix,” and leads off here with the song’s quickly undeniable hook: “Press play, lil’ booty b–ch/ Press play, big booty b–ch.” He and Minaj then trade too-cold bars over an ATL Jacob beat of racing piano and wobbly bass, with the latter even giving yours truly a namecheck: “Top of every list including your man bucket/ Been on the chart so long, I told Billboard to dust it.”

Bleachers, “Tiny Moves”

[embedded content]

After another year of big moves as a writer/producer — including work on Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. album and its signature single “A&W,” which earned him nominations for both album and song of the year at the upcoming Grammys — Jack Antonoff is back in his main gig in 2024 as frontman for alt-rock hitmakers Bleachers. “Tiny Moves” is a typically rousing rave-up from the New Jersey outfit, but with strings driving the action more than the group’s typical combination of guitars and synths, giving extra drama and tension to lyrics like “The tiniest moves you make/ The whole d–n world shakes.” Margaret Qualley, Emmy-nominated actress and Antonoff’s wife, choreographed, directed and dances solo (with Antonoff watching nearby from the hood of his car) in the song’s music video.

Mumford & Sons & Pharrell Williams, “Good People”

[embedded content]

Legendary hip-hop, R&B and pop producer (and occasional solo star) Pharrell Williams as one of the Sons in alt-folk arena-dwellers Mumford & Sons? Doesn’t sound like the most obvious fit, but Pharrell’s never been afraid to branch out into new genre territory — he did an entire mini-album with country group Little Big Town in the mid-10s — and so he meets the retro stompers here on their own ground, adding his piercing “welcome to the revelation” backing vocals to the rise-up lyrics and giving the group’s clomping beat a little extra thump. Won’t be as big as “I Will Wait” or “Happy,” most likely, but an interesting new chapter in both artists’ storied careers.

Norah Jones, “Running”

[embedded content]

Two decades after Norah Jones became one of the few artists in musical history to sell a million copies in a week with her 2004 album Feels Like Home — follow-up, of course, to her diamond-certified breakthrough set Come Away With Me — she’s back with the new single “Running.” The first taste from upcoming ninth album Visions, due in March, the song features Jones lamenting her perpetual state of commitment panic over sympathetic production from Leon Michels, accurately summarized by Jones in a press release as “kind of garage-y, but also kind of soulful.” She may not do the blockbuster numbers she did in the early ’00s, but Jones’ music just keeps getting better.

Kygo & Ava Max, “Whatever”

[embedded content]

Extensively teased by both artists in the weeks leading up to its release, tropical house producer Kygo and pop hitmaker Ava Max are the latest duo to try to replicate David Guetta and Bebe Rexha’s “I’m Good” formula of building an undeniable club smash around a massive, can’t-miss turn-of-the-century interpolation. In this case, the throwback smash being lifted is Shakira’s English-language breakout single “Whenever, Wherever,” which indeed does give a rush to the song’s breakup-themed chorus. Wouldn’t be shocking if it heated up the top 40 airwaves this winter, though you may end up just wanting to listen to the classic original instead. (Guetta is also back with an interpolation single of his own this week, spinning off Cathy Dennis’ 1991 chartbuster “Touch Me (All Night Long)” for his Kungs and Izzy Bizu collab “All Night Long.”)
