What Could Taylor Swift Surprise-Announce at the MTV VMAs This Year?

Now that we know Taylor Swift is the leading nominee at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, the next question is: What might she surprise-announce at the Sept. 10 ceremony?

It was two years ago when Swift surprised the 2022 VMAs audience by announcing that a brand-new studio album called Midnights would arrive in October. Then earlier this year, she used the 2024 Grammys stage to announce that The Tortured Poets Department was on the way.

On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are dropping our best theories for what news she might drop on the crowd this time around. Listen to the full podcast below:

Will Beyonce & Taylor Swift Face Off for Album of the Year at 2025 Grammys?

Taylor Swift and Beyoncé have faced off in the album of the year category at the Grammys just one time, when Swift’s Fearless won out over Bey’s I Am… Sasha Fierce at the 2010 ceremony. The duo could meet again on Feb. 2, 2025, if The Tortured Poets Department and Cowboy Carter receive album of the year nominations.

So what are their chances? On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast (listen below), Katie & Keith are chatting about the just-released 2025 Grammy predictions from Billboard awards editor Paul Grein. Taylor and Beyoncé aren’t the only contenders, of course: Grein also thinks Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Chappell Roan, Chris Stapleton, Tyla and Sabrina Carpenter (with an album that isn’t even out yet!) could join them among the eight nominees.

We chat about all the Big Four categories — also including record and song of the year and best new artist — on the new pod, which you can check out here:

Why Radio Is Still Valuable in the Streaming Age & More Burning Questions: Ask the Pop Shop

On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are opening up the mailbag to answer your burning questions – starting with a question about why radio is still important (and valuable) in the streaming age.

Listener “yaelkaa” asks: “I’m still unclear about the point of (a) radio-released single in the time of streaming.”

We can start by looking at Billboard’s own charts to show how big of an imprint radio still has on American music fans. A few weeks ago, on the July 6-dated Radio Songs chart, the No. 1 song was Post Malone’s “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen, with 76.5 million audience impressions in the U.S., according to data tracking firm Luminate — meaning, it was estimated that song was heard 76.5 million times by people that week. Compare that to the same week’s No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart, which was Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” with 45.4 million official streams in the U.S. And of course, that number includes repeated plays by the same person through the week. The numbers, at least that week, speak for themself: Radio is still very powerful when it comes to the sheer number of people that will hear a song.

Also, we can look at the financials of radio plays versus on-demand audio streaming plays. We dug into the numbers to estimate how much money was generated for the publishers and the songwriter for one major hit song, Noah Kahan’s top 10-charting Billboard Hot 100 hit “Stick Season.” How much would that have generated from radio plays and on-demand audio streams? Which of the two, radio or streaming, likely generated the bigger financial win? Listen to our special Ask the Pop Shop episode below to learn more about that and other questions.

Can Anyone Top Post Malone & Morgan Wallen’s ‘I Had Some Help’ as the 2024 Song of the Summer?

Is the 2024 Song of the Summer race already over or just getting started?

On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are talking about who will end this summer atop our Songs of the Summer chart. Post Malone‘s “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen, has ruled Songs of the Summer since the chart returned in late May, but does it have some current competition that could take the lead? Or maybe a song that hasn’t even been released yet?

We consulted our Billboard colleagues Gary Trust (managing director, charts and data operations) and Jason Lipshutz (executive director, music and founding Pop Shop Podcast co-host) for their insight. They offer up what the strongest contenders are and also do some wishful thinking about how the rest of the summer could play out.

Normani & Camila Cabello’s New Albums Have Us Taking a Closer Look at Life After Girl Groups

Ariana Grande & Sabrina Carpenter Usher in the Return of Cinematic Music Videos

Music videos might not be getting the prime-time TV premieres or big TRL rollouts they did in past decades, but a pair of pop stars are making sure they’re still major events.

Last week, Ariana Grande premiered a video for her latest Eternal Sunshine single “The Boy Is Mine,” which stars You actor Penn Badgley as the object of Grande’s obsession. The visual also includes cameos from Brandy and Monica — nodding to their shared song title — as well as Grande’s transformation into Catwoman to combat the city’s rat problem and claw her way to Badgley’s mayor.

Also last week, Sabrina Carpenter unveiled the new single and video “Please Please Please,” co-starring her Saltburn-actor boyfriend Barry Keoghan. This one also includes a cinematic storyline, with Carpenter and Keoghan’s characters meeting as the pop star gets bailed out of prison and the actor is on his way inside.

After a record year for live music in 2023, last month saw two high-profile arena tour cancellations, with Jennifer Lopez calling off her This Is Me…Live Tour and The Black Keys canceling the North American leg of their International Players Tour.

On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are talking about what happened with the two treks and what might have prevented their cancellations.
