Joan Jett is speaking out about a cause she’s passionate about: animal rights, specifically when it comes to female creatures.
The 66-year-old rock star has partnered with PETA for a new commercial calling on women’s rights proponents to include animals in their advocacy. Premiering Monday (Oct. 21) during The Rachel Maddow Show, the ad begins with a close-up of Jett’s face before it morphs into headshots of a cat, fox, cow, monkey, dog, sheep and other human women.
“We are all sisters under the skin,” the “I Love Rock ‘N Roll” singer says in the video. “End speciesism!”
Of partnering with the organization, Jett tells Billboard, “I want to do everything I can to help animals, and this campaign resonated with me because female animals, in particular, are some of the most abused animals on the planet.”

“As women, our empathy cannot stop at the human female,” the legend continues. “We must oppose the exploitation and abuse of all females, because every animal is someone, and we are all animals.”
Jett, who is vegan, has been working with PETA for well over a decade. In 2012, she declared her vegetarianism in her first-ever print ad for the non-profit, which read: “A meatless diet saves animals from suffering, combats environmental destruction and is better from my health.”
In 2022, Jett spoke on PETA’s behalf at SeaWorld’s virtual annual shareholders meeting to advocate for an end to the theme park’s “sordid breeding program.” “SeaWorld has caused public outrage by continuing to forcibly breed bottlenose dolphins and beluga whales in order to create generations of animals who then suffer in cramped tanks, deprived of any semblance of a natural life,” she said at the time.

Welp, Kylie Jenner won’t have to worry about someone from PETA running up on her during Paris Fashion Week.
Outside of Doja Cat walking around looking like a giant crystalized strawberry, Kylie Jenner turned heads during Monday’s Schiaparelli Haute Couture show in Paris.
The reality star and alleged “self-made” entrepreneur showed up in a gown decked with a giant fake lion head. Immediately you would have assumed animal rights organization, PETA, would take issue with such a fashion item, but shockingly, that was not the case Page Six Style reports.
Much to the surprise of everyone, the president of PETA applauded the look.
Per Page Six Style:
In a statement shared with Page Six Style, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk hailed the Schiaparelli collection’s “three-dimensional animal heads,” none of which incorporated real fur or leather, as “fabulously innovative.”
“Kylie, Naomi, and Irina’s looks celebrate the beauty of wild animals and may be a statement against trophy hunting, in which lions and wolves are torn apart to satisfy human egotism,” Newkirk said.
“We encourage everyone to stick with 100% cruelty-free designs that showcase human ingenuity and prevent animal suffering,” Newkirk concluded, urging Jenner and her fellow stars to “extend this creativity to exclude sheep shorn bloody for wool and silkworms boiled alive in their cocoons.”
Jenner wasn’t the only celebrity rocking a faux animal head as a fashion piece. Page Six Style also adds Schiaparelli’s spring 2023 couture collection includes faux leopard and wolf heads modeled by Naomi Campbell and Shalom Harlow and “was a nod to the three beasts in Dantes Inferno.”
Just Because PETA Liked It, Doesn’t Mean Everyone Else Did
Still, that didn’t stop people from showing their disgust in Jenner’s Instagram comments. “Animals are not trophies,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “As an African I’m extremely offended. The implication is quite disturbing.”
Others called the design “ridiculous,” “terrible,” “wrong,” and “a scary sight.”
In a pair of posts on the fashion house’s IG account, Schiaparelli’ defended his designs, noting they were made from “hand-sculpted foam [and] wool and silk faux fur, and hand painted to look as life-like as possible, celebrating the glory of the natural world.”
We hope this doesn’t become actual and stays on the runway.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has officially terminated exotic animal dealer Jim Hammonds’ Animal Welfare Act license, according to PETA.
The animal rights organization previously submitted a complaint to the USDA about Florida-based Hammonds, a.k.a. “The Monkey Whisperer,” listing his convictions including felony conspiracy to commit wildlife trafficking and three counts of violating the Endangered Species Act.
Hammonds, who is best known for selling a capuchin monkey to Chris Brown, is blocked from legally selling primates for the pet trade for at least a year. “Exotic animals are not pets, playthings, or props for celebrities, and they’re not business transactions either,” said PETA Foundation Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Michelle Sinnott in a press statement. “PETA is celebrating the USDA’s decision to strip this felon of a license before he could exploit additional vulnerable animals.”

In March 2022, Hammonds pleaded guilty to wildlife trafficking charges, with court documents claiming that the breeder illegally sold the singer the capuchin monkey back in 2017 for a total of $12,650. Prosecutors further alleged that Hammonds conducted the sale in Nevada to make it appear that a resident of the state had purchased the primate, since possessing one as a pet is illegal in Brown’s home state of California. In June, Hammonds was sentenced to five years probation and more than $90,000 in fines for violating federal wildlife laws.
Brown was forced to turn the capuchin over in 2017. Brown faced misdemeanor charges but was not named in the federal case against Hammond.
