People’s Choice Country Awards

Morgan Wallen was the top winner at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards (PCCAs), which aired live on Thursday (Sept. 26) across NBC and Peacock from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville.
Wallen won a total of four awards. He was named The People’s Artist for the second year in a row and he also took The Concert Tour for the second year in a row with his long-running One Night at a Time tour. He also won the Social Country Star of 2024 and The Song of 2024 for his featured role on Post Malone’s “I Had Some Help.”

For Wallen, this makes up for last year when he was unexpectedly nosed out as the night’s top winner on the inaugural PCCAs. He won three awards then to Jelly Roll’s four. (That was one of the first indications of the extent of Jelly Roll’s popularity.)

Beyoncé, who was one of this year’s leading nominees, was shut out. Bey was also shut out in the recently announced Country Music Association nominations. Country awards shows seem to prefer to reward artists who are in it for the long haul, rather than giving their prizes to artists, however talented and versatile, who are seen as just visiting the genre.

Luke Combs took three awards – The Album of 2024 for Fathers & Son and the Male Artist of 2024 and The Male Song of 2024 for “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma,” his hit from Twisters: The Album. (At the rate it’s going, the song, which he co-wrote with Jessi Alexander and Jonathan Singleton, could be an Oscar contender for best original song.)

Shaboozey and MGK each won two awards.

Shaboozey won The New Artist of 2024. Jelly Roll won in that category last year. He went on to win the CMA Award for new artist of the year and to land a Grammy nomination for best new artist. Shaboozey has a good chance to equal those feats.

Shaboozey also won The New Artist Song of 2024 for his megahit “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” which is now in its 11th week at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. (Here it must be said that the PCCA has too many categories, and too many similar-sounding categories. It’s confusing. They should consider streamlining their awards structure.)

Among the artists Shaboozey beat in both new artist categories was Dasha, who later won The Female Song award for “Austin (Boots Stop Workin’).” The song was a big crossover hit – it reached No. 3 on Hot Country Songs and No. 18 on the Hot 100. Still, it beat heavy competition to win that award, including songs by Wilson, Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves and two songs by Beyoncé (which may have split Bey’s vote).

“Lonely Road” by MGK featuring Jelly Roll won the crossover song award. The hit interpolates John Denver’s 1971 classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” MGK’s “Sun to Me,” written by Zach Bryan, won as The Cover Song of 2024.

Lainey Wilson took the award for The Female Artist for the second year in a row. Dan + Shay won The Group/Duo award, also for the second year in a row. But Old Dominion’s “Different About You” won the Group/Duo Song award, beating Dan + Shay’s “For the Both of Us.” (See what we mean about too many similar-sounding categories?)

Shania Twain hosted the show. The crossover star was nominated for The Concert Tour of 2024 for Shania Twain: Come on Over – The Las Vegas Residency – All the Hits!, but lost to Wallen.

Winners are chosen entirely by the fans, leading the show to bill itself as “an award show for the people and by the people.” The eligibility period for this year’s show was Aug. 12, 2023, to Aug. 9, 2024.

The People’s Choice Country Awards were produced by Den of Thieves. Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski executive produced, along with RAC Clark as executive producer and showrunner.

Five-time Grammy winner Shania Twain has performed around the world, but she’s returning to where it all began in Nashville this week, as she hosts the upcoming second People’s Choice Country Awards, which will air Thursday night (Sept. 26) on NBC and Peacock, from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House.

“It’s a really full-circle experience for me,” Twain tells Billboard. “It takes me back to my own beginnings in Nashville and as a new recording artist there, and obviously the historic location is always appealing. I meet new artists, and I’m running into old friends, making new friends.”

In addition to a slate of nominees including Beyoncé, Kane Brown, Zach Bryan, Jelly Roll, Tim McGraw, Dolly Parton, Shaboozey, George Strait, Lainey Wilson and Bailey Zimmerman, other anticipated moments from the show will include Miranda Lambert being honored with the 2024 country icon award, while Brown will be celebrated as the 2024 country champion award honoree.

As much as Twain is guiding viewers through the awards ceremony, she says, “I’m here more as a fan than anything. It’s the artists that the people want to hear and see, so to me, that is everything. I’ll be smack dab in the middle of it all, so I’m super excited. I’m all access.”

Among those artists Twain herself anticipates seeing are a mix of newcomers and established artists.

“I’m excited to see Parker McCollum and I’ll be excited to catch up with Lady A — they are always fabulous to see live. I’m excited to see Kane Brown, Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert, and I’m particularly excited about seeing The War and Treaty and listening to them perform because they are such gorgeous vocalists. And Shaboozey just makes me happy whenever I watch one of his videos. It just brings me joy, so it’s just a lot of positive energy.”

Bryan leads this year’s nominees with 19 nominations, followed by Beyoncé with 17 nominations.

Beyoncé’s “Texas Hold ‘Em” topped Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart for 10 weeks, while her album Cowboy Carter stayed at the pinnacle of the Top Country Albums chart for four weeks. In addition to being nominated at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards for the overall people’s artist of 2024, the female artist of 2024 and the album of 2024 (Cowboy Carter), among Beyoncé’s nominations are two entries in the female song of 2024 category (“16 Carriages” and “Texas Hold ‘Em”).

“The impact is undeniable,” Twain says of Cowboy Carter. “I think all successful recording artists make music for listeners, and these artists deserve an industry that in return, listens to the people’s choice, to what the people want to hear. That’s what’s happened with Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter and the industry needs to respect what the listeners want, and what the listeners want is Beyoncé country. The people are hungry for more diversity in the genre. Beyoncé is part of broadening the spectrum. When I was growing up I was listening to folk country, alternative country and all kinds of country, and we’re getting back to that now again, and Beyoncé is part of that.”

In terms of her hosting duties, Twain says she’s taken inspiration from other artists who have hosted awards shows, such as Reba McEntire, who has hosted both the Country Music Association Awards and the Academy of Country Music Awards.

“Any of those big shows rely a lot on the spirit and the mood of the host, because the hosts are chosen, I think quite carefully, making sure people are relating and the host has experience. Reba is one of my favorite hosts. She’s speaking from experience and I think that commands respect and attention. She’s funny and smart, and is loved by all, and it’s a compliment to be asked to do something like [hosting an awards show]. So Reba is a good example for me.”

Of course, Twain isn’t just hosting the show — she’s also a nominee, as Shania Twain: Come On Over—The Las Vegas Residency- All The Hits!, earned her a nomination in the concert tour of 2024 category. Her residency is currently slated to run through early 2025.

Recently, Twain was also included in a trailer for the new medical drama series Doctor Odyssey. Twain says 2025 and beyond will be filled with a variety of creative pursuits.

“I’ll be very, very busy for the next few years. I’m doing more acting. I’ll be in the studio making a new album. I’m writing music for various things and there’s a musical in the works with my music, so lots of exciting things. I’ll be busy doing more of a variety of things than I’ve ever done before in my career, so that’ll keep me off the Vegas stage for a while.”

Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, Lady A, Parker McCollum and The War and Treaty have been added as performers for the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards, which will air Thursday, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and Peacock. Kane Brown, who is set to receive the Country Champion Award, and Miranda Lambert, who is set to receive the Country Icon Award, had already been announced as performers.
The two-hour show, hosted by Shania Twain, will air live from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. A two-hour red-carpet pre-show, Live From E!: People’s Choice Country Awards, will kick off the night at 6 p.m. ET/PT on E!.

Ballerini, Lady A and The War and Treaty received CMA Awards nominations in key categories on Monday (Sept. 9). Ballerini is nominated for female vocalist of the year, Lady A for vocal group of the year, and The War and Treaty for vocal duo of the year. A strong performance on the People’s Choice Country Awards could conceivably help them in the CMA voting. (CMA final-round voting opens on Tuesday, Oct. 1, five days after the People’s Choice Country Awards, and extends for four weeks.)

Miranda Lambert will receive The Country Icon Award at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards, which are slated for Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. Lambert will be honored for her 23-year career (dating back to the release of her self-released debut album), “during which she’s built an authentic, female-forward brand of country that has shaped the industry,” in the show’s words.
Last year, an ailing Toby Keith received The Country Icon Award at the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards. He died a little more than four months later of stomach cancer.

Lambert will receive award two weeks after the release of her ninth solo studio album, Postcards from Texas, which is due Sept. 13.

“A tour de force in country music for more than 20 years, Miranda Lambert’s groundbreaking albums continue to capture the hearts of fans around the world,” Jen Neal, evp, live events and specials, NBCUniversal Entertainment, said in a statement. “We’re so excited to celebrate her career, fierce individualism and innovation in the industry with the Country Icon Award.”

Lambert has long been an awards magnet. She has won a record 35 Academy of Country Music Awards, 14 Country Music Association Awards (more than any other woman) and three Grammys.

She has also been a major force on the Billboard charts, with five No. 1 hits on Hot Country Songs, seven No. 1s on Country Airplay, seven No. 1 albums on Top Country Albums and one No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

She has conquered Las Vegas with her twice-extended “Velvet Rodeo” residency and blurred genre lines with her work with such varied artists as Leon Bridges, Enrique Iglesias, The B-52s, Loretta Lynn, Sheryl Crow and Elle King as well as her inclusive anthem “Y’all Means All” for Netflix’s Queer Eye.

In addition to her musical pursuits, Lambert is a restaurateur, businesswoman, New York Times best-selling author and, perhaps most importantly to her, shelter animal advocate. She has raised nearly $10 million to date for rescue animals via her MuttNation Foundation.

Last year, the People’s Choice Country Awards presented a second special honor, the Country Champion Award, to Wynonna Judd. The show has not yet announced who, if anyone, will receive that award this year.

Hosted by Shania Twain, the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards will air live on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT across NBC and Peacock. A pre-show, Live From E!: People’s Choice Country Awards, will kick off the night at 6 p.m. ET/PT on E! The pre-show is produced by Den of Thieves with executive producers Ignjatovic, Prager and Bialkowski.

Shania Twain is set to host the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards airing live from the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville on Thursday, Sept. 26. The two-hour show will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT across NBC and Peacock.

Twain is no stranger to the People’s Choice Awards franchise. In December 2022, she received the People’s Music Icon Award at the OG People’s Choice Awards, from which the People’s Choice Country Awards is a spin-off.  She performed a medley of “Any Man of Mine,” “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” “Waking Up Dreaming” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”

Little Big Town hosted last year’s inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards, on which Toby Keith received a Country Icon Award. Keith also performed for the first time since the end of his treatment for stomach cancer.  The country legend died a little more than four months later, on Feb. 5.

Other performers on last year’s show were Wynonna Judd, who received a Country Champion Award, Little Big Town, Blake Shelton (who presented the award to Keith), Carly Pearce, Dan + Shay, HARDY, Jelly Roll, Kane Brown and Kelsea Ballerini. 

Jelly Roll was the top winner on last year’s show, with four awards, followed by Morgan Wallen and Lainey Wilson, with three wins each.

The telecast was seen by 4.4 million viewers across all platforms. Content from the show reached 25 million cross-platform users (linear, digital and social). 

This year’s show will air a little more than a month before the 2024 Country Music Association Awards, which are set for November in Nashville. CMA nominations will be announced later this summer.

The OG People’s Choice Awards debuted on CBS on March 3, 1975. The show remained on that network through 2017. It moved to E! in 2018. NBC came on board in 2021; Peacock in 2024.

The pickup means that there will be four major country awards shows again next year – the CMT Music Awards on CBS and CMT (this year’s show aired on April 2); the ACM Awards on Prime Video (this year’s show streamed on May 11); and the CMA Awards on ABC (this year’s show aired on Nov. 8). Country award shows have traditionally done well on TV, and the genre is in a hot phase right now.

Jelly Roll was the top winner at the first People’s Choice Country Awards, with six awards in four categories. That was one of the first indications of his exploding popularity. Morgan Wallen and Lainey Wilson each won three awards. Jelly Roll also performed on the show, as did Blake Shelton, Carly Pearce, Dan + Shay, HARDY, Kane Brown, Kelsea Ballerini and Icon Awards recipients Toby Keith and Wynonna Judd. The People’s Choice Country Awards, which calls itself “the only award show for the people and by the people,” is a brand extension of the fan-driven People’s Choice Awards. That show originated on CBS in March 1975 and was a top-rated show for most of its run on that network. CBS last carried the show in 2017. E! picked it up in 2018, and NBC and E! have had “shared custody” of the show since 2021. The most recent edition, hosted by Kenan Thompson, aired on Dec. 6, 2022. The next edition is slated for Feb. 18.

Total viewership for the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards was up +16% compared to the 2022 People’s Choice Awards simulcast. The telecast was seen by 4.3 million viewers across all platforms, and content from the show reached 25 million cross-platform users (linear, digital and social).
