‘The Voice’ Contestants Stun With Performance of Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’

The Voice continued its Battle rounds on Tuesday night (Oct. 18), this time pitting contestants Eric Who and Sydney Kronmiller against each other for a performance of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” that viewers won’t forget. In a promo released on YouTube before the episode, the two singers harmonized perfectly as they competed for judge Camila Cabello’s team.

It seems like the “Havana” singer adored the performance and and was thoroughly impressed by each contestant’s very different, but equally stunning renditions of the Gaga classic. “Sydney, I have never heard a voice like yours before,” Cabello told Kronmiller. “Your note choices were so different and weird, and the way you slide in and out of falsetto.” 

She also seemed to enjoy Eric’s boisterous presence adding, “Eric, I saw you really grow as an artist and step into somebody I’m really excited to hear on the radio, see perform in shows.”

Kronmiller’s low vocal range is what really caught the judges’ attention. “The fact that you can do that and still have the higher notes in your register too–you really gave a great performance,” said John Legend of her performance.

And once again, it’s Eric’s stage presence and energy that wowed judges. While Blake Shelton shared he was shocked by Kronmiller’s register, he described Eric as the “happiest person,” telling Cabello he wouldn’t be able to deny the theatrical contestant a spot.

While the judges had a warm reaction to the two, only one can go on to compete on Cabello’s team. Viewers will have to tune into the episode, airing tonight on NBC. Watch the teaser video below.

Drake & NBA YoungBoy Cement Hip Hop’s Dominance As Most Streamed Artists Of 2022

Drake and NBA YoungBoy have been named the top two streaming artists in any genre for 2022.

According to HitsDailyDouble, YoungBoy and the 6 God have compiled the most streams in America through September with over 12 billion combined.

Drake leads the way as the only artist with over 6.7 billion streams and YB is the lone other artist boasting over five billion. They beat out the likes of music titans such as Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny and The Weeknd to round out the Top Five.

Elsewhere in the Top 10, Hip Hop is well-represented thanks to the late Juice WRLD at No. 6, Kanye West holding steady earning the No. 8 slot with Future and Lil Durk not far behind.

While Drake has dropped an album already this year, NBA YoungBoy is planning on releasing 10 mixtapes by the time 2022 expires. He revealed on Sunday (October 16) that he’s got his sixth project ready to go with an imminent arrival.

Ma’ I Got a Family will feature between 13 and 17 new songs and is set to arrive “this week,” although an exact release date has yet to be announced.

The mixtape’s cover art reflects the title’s familial theme as it shows NBA YoungBoy posing for the camera alongside his fiancée Jazlyn Mychelle and their two children — the youngest of whom was born in September — inside their home.

In a follow-up post, YoungBoy Never Broke Again hinted at his 10 project goal. “Fun challenge ’10 tapes 1 year ??’” read a screenshot of an iPhone Note, which he captioned: “I’m finna be on 6 you think I can do it ?”

YoungBoy leads all artists with 29 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022.

As for Drake, he surprised fans with his house pivot on Honestly, Nevermind back in June. Just don’t expect to hear Drizzy’s name mentioned at the 2023 Grammy Awards after he reportedly didn’t submit any of his new music for consideration.

Tee Grizzley Reflects On Being With PnB Rock The Day Before His Murder

Tee Grizzley has opened up about losing his friend PnB Rock, who was with the Detroit rapper at his engagement party the day before his death.

In an interview with Bootleg Kev, Grizzley said losing Rock was hard because he remained one of his only real friends in the industry, and said celebrating his engagement alongside him was “lit.”

“Man that was fucked up bro, that was hard,” Grizzley said. “I feel like I lost a genuine friend in this shit, and genuine friends in this business is hard to come by, so that was tough.”

PnB Rock was gunned down on September 12 while dining with his girlfriend at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles in South Los Angeles. Investigators caught a break in the case when they apprehended a 17-year-old suspect they believe fired the shots that killed the Philadelphia rapper.

According to TMZ, the teen son of Freddie Lee Trone — the man police believe drove the getaway car — was taken into custody on charges of first-degree murder. Soon after, authorities apprehended Lee Trone himself as well as the boy’s stepmother Shauntel Trone, who is accused of being an accessory after the fact.

Tee Grizzley and PnB Rock had a close relationship while the latter was alive. To celebrate the release of Rock’s EP 2 Get You Thru The Rain back in December, Grizzley gifted his friend $10,000 in cash.

“Hey man, I just pulled up on my geyser, and he came through man, gave me new cologne’s and shit,” PNB said in an Instagram video as he held up a Neiman Marcus bag. He puts the bag down and removes a wad of $10,000.

“This my brudda!” PNB called out.

“Yessir,” Grizzley replied. “That’s what we smell like.”

“I’m just walking you through everything that happened in the trenches,” Grizzley said of the project, which is divided into different chapters. “Not everything, but some of the stuff that happens every day.”

In a separate interview with HipHopDX, Tee Grizzley said making a film so heavily based in the hood required experience and sensitivity to the lifestyle.

“You got to have some type of experience with this stuff,” he told DX. “You got to have some type of experience, you got to have imagination and you got to be creative. You got to have experience because you got to know how people will respond to certain things.”

He continued: “You got to have imagination because you got to put some great shit in there. And then with creativity, you got to have that because, at the end, how will you leave people wanting more of this?”

The Legal Beat: Cardi B’s Bizarre Trial – Plus Gunna, Ed Sheeran & More

This is The Legal Beat, a weekly column about music law from Billboard Pro, offering you a one-stop cheat sheet of big new cases, important rulings, and all the fun stuff in between.

This week: Cardi B goes to trial in a weird case over a bawdy album cover, Gunna is again refused bond in Atlanta, Ed Sheeran warns that a copyright ruling might “strangle” future songwriters and much more.

THE BIG STORY: Cardi Heads to Trial Over Bawdy Album Cover

In one of the weirder cases you’ll ever hear about, Cardi B is headed to a federal courthouse today to defend against claims that the cover of her debut mixtape “humiliated” a man named Kevin Brophy, who alleges he was unwittingly photoshopped into the artwork to make it look like he was performing oral sex on the now-superstar.

Yes, you read that right. And I didn’t even tell you yet that the entire thing hinges on a giant back tattoo featuring “a tiger battling a snake.”

As Cardi’s star was rising in 2016, she released Gangsta Bitch Music Vol. 1 with a provocative cover – an image of her swigging a beer, staring into the camera … with a man’s head between her legs. The actual guy in the image was a model (who consented to the whole thing), but the giant tattoo on his back belonged to Brophy (who didn’t). Unbeknownst to Cardi, a freelance graphic designer had typed “back tattoos” into Google Image, found one that fit, and Photoshopped it onto the model’s body. It apparently didn’t occur to him that he would need anyone’s approval to do so.

Years later, the two will now square off before a jury over whether the image broke the law, and whether Cardi herself is to blame.

Brophy claims the star and others violated his right of publicity by using his likeness without his consent, and also invasion of his privacy by casting him in a “false light” that was “highly offensive” to a reasonable person. He claims he was “devastated, humiliated and embarrassed” by the cover.

Cardi says those accusations are “sheer fantasy” and “vastly overblown.” Her legal team says Cardi had no idea Brophy’s image was being used, and that he’s just suing her in an effort to “cash in the legal equivalent of a lotto ticket.” But their chief argument is even simpler: That nobody would have ever recognized a relatively unknown person based on a cropped image of his back tattoo.

“No matter how much plaintiff may be obsessed with the notion, the fact remains that it is not  ‘him,’ or a ‘likeness of him,’ or ‘his identity’ in the cover image,” Cardi’s lawyers wrote.

Cardi is expected to testify at some point, with a verdict expected by the end of the week or early next week. We’ll keep you posted over at Billboard.com when the news drops.

VLOGGER BETTER HAVE MY MONEY – Elsewhere in Cardi-world, a federal judge ruled that Tasha K – a gossip blogger who made salacious claims about the star – must either immediately pay up on an almost $4 million defamation verdict or secure a bond covering the entire amount. Tasha is currently appealing the verdict and wanted to pause the judgement while she does so, but Cardi’s lawyers warned last month that the YouTuber had bragged about taking steps to “insulate herself” from the huge damages award, and might use the delay to avoid paying entirely.

GUNNA DENIED BOND YET AGAIN – For a third time, a Georgia judge refused to release Gunna from jail ahead of his January trial in the sweeping case against Young Thug and others accused of operating a violent gang in the Atlanta area. The order came after prosecutors claimed to have text messages in which a co-defendant in the sprawling case offered to “whack someone” on the rapper’s behalf, prompting the judge to say that he had the “same concerns” about the potential for witness tampering. But just a day later, Gunna’s lawyers cried foul, claiming the alleged smoking gun text actually had “nothing to do with witness intimidation” and had been used to mislead the court.

SHOTS FIRED OVER POWERHOUSE MUSIC LAWYER – In an exclusive interview with Billboard’s Frank DiGiacomo, Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner blasted the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for its upcoming induction of powerhouse music lawyer Allen Grubman, saying it was “about money and bending to the ego of a music business power broker.” Grubman is one of the most powerful attorneys in the industry, counting Bruce Springsteen, Lizzo, The Weeknd, Lil Nas X, Lady Gaga and other stars as clients, as well as major music companies and digital streamers. But Wenner said he decided to speak out because he believes Grubman clearly doesn’t fit the criteria: “Grubman has made no contribution of any kind, by any definition, to the creative development or the history of rock & roll.”

WARHOL & PRINCE AT SCOTUS – More than three decades after Andy Warhol‘s death and six years after Prince‘s sudden passing, the two pop culture icons took center stage at U.S. Supreme Court , as the justices heard arguments in a major copyright case. At issue in the dispute is whether the late Warhol made a legal “fair use” of a photograph of Prince when he used it as the basis for a set of his distinctive screen prints – or merely infringed the copyrights of Lynn Goldsmith, the photographer who snapped it. During the proceedings, the justices grappled with tough questions, like what exactly is necessary to “transform” a copyrighted work into a fair use. In a lighter moment, Justice Clarence Thomas disclosed that he had been a fan of Prince’s music “in the ’80s,” to which Justice Elena Kagan asked “no longer?” As the room erupted in laughter, Thomas replied enigmatically: “Only on Thursday night.”

ED SHEERAN WARNS OF ‘STRANGLED’ SONGWRITERS – The pop star’s lawyers asked a federal judge to rethink a recent decision that said the singer must face a trial over whether “Thinking Out Loud” infringes Marvin Gaye‘s “Let’s Get It On.” The decision came two weeks after Judge Louis Stanton refused to toss the case out, ruling that a jury would have to decide Sheeran’s argument that he only borrowed basic, unprotectable musical “building blocks.” In the new filing, the star’s lawyers warned the judge that forcing musicians to face trials over such material would have a chilling effect on the industry and threaten to “strangle creation” by future songwriters. In technical terms, Sheeran’s attorneys want the judge to either undo the ruling entirely, or allow them to immediately appeal it before he faces trial.

SLACKER HIT WITH HUGE UNPAID ROYALTY BILL – A federal judge ruled that streaming platform Slacker owes nearly $10 million in unpaid performance royalties to record labels and artists. SoundExchange, which collects streaming royalties for sound recordings, sued Slacker and parent company LiveOne in June, claiming they had refused to pay millions over a five-year period. This week, Judge André Birotte Jr. made it official, ordering that Slacker pay $9,765,396 in unpaid royalties and late fees. Importantly, he also banned the company from using the so-called statutory license – a key copyright provision that allows radio-like streamers to get easy access to licenses at a fixed rate. Now, Slacker will presumably need to negotiate direct licenses from rights holders for sound recordings, similar to what on-demand streaming services like Spotify must do.

The Game Channels Suge Knight While Trolling 50 Cent Over Beef With Son Marquise

The Game has inserted himself in 50 Cent‘s beef with his son Marquise Jackson, and he’s channeling his inner Suge Knight and Death Row Records.

The Compton native shared a pair of posts on his Instagram page where he poked fun at his former boss. In the first post, The Game shared a picture of 50 and Marquise from an old G-Unit clothing ad campaign with a caption ridiculing the whole situation.

“Like father like… wait, wrong picture. BRB,” The Game wrote.

In his next post, The Documentary rapper shared a picture of himself and his oldest child, Harlem Taylor, with a caption referencing Suge Knight’s infamous speech at the 1995 Source Awards where he criticized Diddy’s approach with artists on his Bad Boy Records label.

“Ahhhh more like it. I love you son. @harlemtaylorr,” The Game wrote. “If you don’t want your dad playing favorites, leaving you out in the cold, n giving you scraps every month, come to DEATHROW.”

The Game’s tweets come after 50 Cent ridiculed his son on his 26th birthday with an Instagram video responding to his complaints that 50’s $6,700-a-month child support payments weren’t enough to keep him afloat in New York City.

The almost minute-long clip finds 50 watching TV in the tub in a hotel in Germany when Marquise’s comments appear on the screen as “breaking news.” 50 turns the TV off and says: “This n-gga’s crazy. You’re 25 years old; why are you still talking about child support?”

Later in the video, 50 Cent answers a knock at his hotel room door and is greeted by Tony Yayo and Uncle Murda. “You know I don’t ask you for shit, man, but I was thinking,” Murda asks. “Could a n-gga get a little extra $6,700 a month?”

50 replies: “You n-ggas play too much” while laughing.

Marquise Jackson saw 50 Cent’s trolling and posted screenshots of the video on his own Instagram page, along with a message sarcastically thanking his estranged father for the birthday love.

“Hol on wait did my pops post me on my birthday today!” he wrote in the caption. “Wow he never shouted me out for my birthday this the 1st time.

“Since y’all think $6,700 is sooo much money someone tell my pops I will pay him $6,700 for just 24hr of his time so we can do everything I ever wanted to do with him as a kid,” he wrote on Instagram while sharing a photo of him sat next to $100 bills spelling out the word “entitled.”

Ozuna’s ’OzuTochi’ Launches at No. 5 on Top Latin Albums Chart

Ozuna collects his sixth top 10 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart as his latest full-length, OzuTochi, debuts at No. 5 on the list dated Oct. 22. The set concurrently opens at No. 4 on Latin Rhythm Albums.

OzuTochi begins with 8,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 13, according to Luminate. While most of the album’s first-week total derives from streaming-equivalent album units, 500 stem from traditional sales and track-equivalent units combined.

On the multimetric Top Latin Albums chart as measured in equivalent album units, each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.

The songs on OzuTochi logged 11 million on-demand official streams in its opening week. The 18-track set was released Oct. 7 via Aura/Sony Music Latin and is billed as Ozuna’s fifth studio album as a soloist. The set follows a collaborative release with Anuel AA: Los Dioses, which earned Ozuna his fifth No. 1 on the all-Latin albums tally (February 2021).

Ozuna’s debut effort, Odisea, bowed at No. 1 in September 2017. It held strong at the summit for 46 weeks, tying with Bad Bunny’s X100PRE for the third-most among all acts since Top Latin Albums launched in 1993 (behind Benito’s 70 weeks atop with YHLQMDLG and Gloria Estefan’s Mi Tierra, a total of 58).

In total, of Ozuna’s seven charting efforts on Top Latin Albums, five have reached No. 1 (Odisea, Aura, Nibiru, Enoc and his collaborative set with Anuel AA, Los Dioses).

Back to OzuTochi, as mentioned, the set also starts at No. 4 on Latin Rhythm Albums. As it sends X100PRE to No. 5, it ceases Bad Bunny’s domination of the top four, a feat his endured for 13 consecutive rankings (since the July 23-dated ranking).

OzuTochi was preceded by “Somos Iguales,” a collaborative song with Tokischa, featuring Louchie Lou and Michie One. It hits a new peak of No. 34 on the current multi-metric Hot Latin Songs chart. The pair’s first joint track samples Louchie Lou and Michie One’s 1993 tune “Rich Girl.” The new Caribbean-rhythmic version was produced by DJ Luian, Mambo Kingz, Jowny, and Hydro. (“Rich Girl” was later refreshed by Gwen Stefani’s 2004 song of the same name, featuring Eve. Both versions of “Rich Girl,” and “Somos Iguales,” all call back to the song “If I Were a Rich Man,” from the stage musical Fiddler on the Roof.)

“Somos Iguales” also pounces to the No. 1 rank on the all-genre Latin Airplay chart, as it rallies 13-1 with 9 million in audience impressions, up 55%, earned in the U.S. in the week ending Oct. 16. It’s a 29th win for Ozuna. Meanwhile, Tokischa, Louchie Lou and Michie One, all top the list with their first chart entry.

Beto O’Rourke Hands Kacey Musgraves a Beer During ACL Festival

It seems as though Kacey Musgraves is rooting for Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke.

During the “Butterflies” singer’s headlining set during the second weekend of Austin City Limits Music Festival this weekend, the star told the crowd at one point, “Honestly, I could use a drink. Is there any beer or anything out there?” 

O’Rourke then surprised the crowd by briefly stepping onstage to hand Musgraves a bottle of beer. Though the duo said nothing at all about the interaction, the country singer-songwriter took a swig of the beverage and said, “That really hit the spot.” O’Rourke is seen waving to the cheering crowd, before walking off the stage to enjoy the rest of the show.

Musgraves is just the latest star to show her support for O’Rourke, who is challenging incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in the Nov. 8 general election. During last week’s ACL festival, The Chicks urged the crowd to vote for the Democratic candidate “if there is a female in your life that you care about.”

The week before, Harry Styles also voiced his support for O’Rourke during his Love on Tour Austin concert, rocking a black-and-white sticker on his guitar’s bottom right corner that read “Beto for Texas.”

The gubernatorial hopeful was a Democratic candidate for president of the United States in 2020. In 2018, O’Rourke was a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Texas. Incumbent Senator Ted Cruz defeated O’Rourke in the general election by a margin of just three percentage points.

Kelly Clarkson Serves Up Doobie Brothers Vibes for ‘Kellyoke’

Kelly Clarkson took The Kelly Clarkson Show back to the ’70s with her cover of The Doobie Brothers‘ “What a Fool Believes” on Tuesday (Oct. 18).

Wearing her hair in a high pony with a blue and cheetah print jumpsuit, the talk show host belted out, “What a fool believes/ He sees, no wise man has the power/ To reason away/ Oh, what seems to be/ Is always better than nothing/ And nothing at all/ What a fool believes.”

Released as the lead single from The Doobie Brothers’ 1979 album Minute by Minute, the soft rock classic earned the band their second and final No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 following 1974’s “Black Water.”

During the show, Clarkson welcomed Jessica Chastain as her guest and chatted with the Oscar winner about her role as country legend Tammy Wynette in the upcoming biopic George and Tammy.

The actress even jokingly admitted during the interview that she was “nervous” to discuss the project with the American Idol winner considering the latter’s love for music. “It’s probably the most nervous thing that I… Even talking about it gives me, like, hives,” Chastain said of singing in the film. “But I drank a lot of bourbon and I got through it.

Missy Elliott Blvd. Is Now On Google Maps: ‘God Is Good!’

Portsmouth, VA – Missy Elliott has been honored with a street named after her in her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, and she’s celebrating the fact it’s now been added to Google Maps.

The “Work It” hitmaker shared an Instagram post on Tuesday (October 18) featuring a photo of her smiling ear-to-ear in a golden Versace outfit while holding the Missy Elliott BLVD street sign.

“ATTENTION MISSY ELLIOTT BLVD is on the Google Map #VA baybeeeeee#757 P-TOWN WAIT a WHOLE BLVD! God is good,” Missy wrote.

“I am not perfect & I’ve had ups & downs when some doubted me & thought I would give up I PRAYED & got back up everytimeHopefully this will INSPIRE some1 else to KEEP PUSHING!”

Missy was showered with praise in the comment section of her post from the likes of Doechii, D-Nice, Torae and many more.

A fan added: “I just told Siri to take me to Missy Elliott Blvd. sacrificing my whole lunch break lol.”

She was also honored with a key to the city during Monday’s (October 17) ceremony officially renaming McLean Street to Missy Elliott Boulevard.

“I’ve rode down that boulevard so many times, so make sure y’all don’t get no misdemeanors on my street,” the Grammy-winner joked.
