Jack Black Rocks Terminally Ill Teen‘s World With ’The Legend of the Rent’ Performance

Jack Black made a 15-year-old fan’s day by giving him the most rocking of surprises. While hosting this year’s Layla Paige and Friends Walk for TinityKids Care charity event to raise funds for a hospice program that provides end-of-life care for children in the L.A. area, Black met terminally ill superfan Abraham, whose favorite movie happens to be Black’s 2003 musical comedy School of Rock.

After finding out that Abraham’s favorite song from the film was “The Legend of the Rent,” Black bent down, held the teen’s hand and belted out a bit of the tune, crooning, “In the end of time/ There was a man/ Who knew the road/ And the writing/ Was written on the stone.” Abraham nodded and smiled as Black not only sung the tune, but also scatted the guitar part, which the teen then repeated back to him.

Black played hapless teacher Dewey Finn in the movie, which earned him an MTV Video Music Award for best comedic performance and a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a comedy/musical. The annual walk celebrates the life of Layla Paige, a two-year-old who died of an incurable brain disorder who received treatment at TrinityKids Care. “Not only did they take care of Layla, but provided incredible emotional support to her parents and brother Luke,” Black said in a video promoting the walk.

Black comedy rock duo, Tenacious D, are slated to rock New Year’s Eve at the Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas on Dec. 30 and 31st.

Nicki Minaj Hints At New Album Dropping In 2022

Nicki Minaj has hinted that her new album will arrive before the year is out.

During a conversation with one of her “long time idols” Jada Pinkett-Smith for Interview magazine published on Tuesday (October 18), the Young Money megastar indicated her long-awaited fifth LP will be released in 2022.

“I wasn’t sure how I was even feeling about having to put out an album this year, but that song happening and people liking it, that made me happy,” Nicki said, referring to her chart-topping, record-breaking single “Super Freaky Girl.”

She added: “People have gone through so much recently that they want to have fun. It’ll probably expedite the album to come out this year.”

Nicki Minaj’s new album has been in the works since at least 2019, when she confirmed to Elle that he was working on her next project, which she described as “fierce, fun and unapologetic.”

Earlier this year, Nicki divulged more details when she promised the return of “Mixtape Nicki” on the upcoming project.

“I just feel like that’s what’s needed right now,” she told The Dana Cortez Show in February. “What I do is write raps that connect with people, that make people want to sing along and channel their inner bad bitch.

“I love giving that good energy to people and make them feel like, ‘Yo, I’m speaking for you.’ You gonna get hints of other things, of course, but yes, you’re going to get that Mixtape Nicki.”

During a Q&A with fans on Twitter the following month, the Queens, New York native hinted at Drake playing a major role in the album by revealing they’d discussed him executive producing it.

While further details remain scarce, Nicki Minaj has treated fans to multiple previews of her new album with the singles “Do We Have a Problem?” and “Bussin,” both of which feature Lil Baby, as well as the Fivio Foreign-assisted “We Go Up” and the aforementioned “Super Freaky Girl.”

The as-yet-untitled project will serve as Nicki Minaj’s first studio album in four years and the follow-up to 2018’s Queen, which itself came after a lengthy wait following 2014’s The Pinkprint.

In August, she released Queen Radio: Volume 1, an epic, career-spanning compilation featuring 29 of her biggest songs, including “Super Bass,” “Moment 4 Life” and “Anaconda,” among others.

If her next album does indeed drop in 2022, it will bolster an already busy fourth quarter, with Nas and Hit-Boy’s King’s Disease 3, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre’s Missionary, Metro Boomin’s Heroes & Villains and potentially five more mixtapes from NBA YoungBoy also on the horizon.

Drake Reflects On Opening For Ice Cube For Just $100

Drake may be making millions from touring now, but he was once opening for Ice Cube for just $100.

The Instagram account The Flyer Vault, which documents Toronto club and concert history, shared a post revealing Drizzy received just three figures as a support act for the N.W.A legend in 2006. The concert took place at Kool Haus in August that year, with Drake performing from 10 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. before Cube hit the stage at 11:00 p.m.

“On August 19, 2006, Ice Cube headlined the Kool Haus with supporting act Drake in what was likely his first ever concert,” the post read. “The Boy got paid a handsome sum of $100 and performed cuts from his debut mixtape Room for Improvement which was released earlier that year. Classic history! Courtesy of @jb_smoooth.”

Drake shared the post to his Instagram Stories on Tuesday (October 18) and wrote underneath: “This is for anybody getting 100 a show right now… keep going.”

Drake has come a long way since then. According to Touring Data, his last tour in 2019, The Assassination Vacation Tour, grossed $33,851,546 from just 23 shows across Europe. Prior to that, his 2018 Aubrey & the Three Migos Tour reportedly grossed $103,060,112 from 54 shows.

Ice Cube previously made comments about Drake having a “good run” and that artists only have three years at the pinnacle of rap.

“He had a good run,” he told the Sana G Morning Show in 2018. “You’ve only got a three-year run in the rap game, baby. You’ve only got three years at the tip-top of the rap game before you have to find your place in this thing. That’s just the pattern. Everybody, Wayne when he was hot, three years on top and you were looking for somebody else.”

Cube later clarified he wasn’t talking about Drake specifically, but his opinion on artists in general.

“I wasn’t saying that about Drake,” he told Big Boy’s Neighborhood. “It’s my theory about anybody in music. You usually have a three, maybe five-year reign at the tip-top before the industry is looking for something new. That’s just, you know, I’ve seen it happen time and time and time again. It happened to me.”

He added: “After the reign on the tip-top, you have to find your place. Don’t fall all the way to the bottom. Find your place near the top, keep doing music, keep growing your fanbase. So, that was the theory. It wasn’t about Drake.”

Drake appeared to address Ice Cube’s comments on his Scorpion song “8 out of 10,” rapping: “I been on top for three sets of three years.”

Drizzy isn’t the only one with fond memories of that 2006 Toronto show. One fan who worked the concert reminisced on Cube hooking him up with a signed copy of a Friday DVD after the show.

“Worked this show,” the fan wrote in the comments of the original post. “Spent the day with Cube and his team. He was super intimidating for like, a second. Then the nicest guy and great tour manager.

“At the end of the night, I had him sign my #DeathCertificate vinyl, but mentioned to his manager I wished I had also brought my Friday DVD. Manager took down my info and a few weeks later, I opened the mail and found an autographed DVD from Cube. The best!!”

R. Kelly’s Former Business Manager Seeking $850K in Attorney’s Fees After Acquittal

R. Kelly’s former business manager asked a federal judge to award him $850,000 in attorneys fees after a jury acquitted him during the same trial in Chicago at which the R&B singer was convicted of child pornography charges.

Derrel McDavid’s attorney wrote that deserves to recoup the legal fees after enduring a “frivolous, vexatious and bad faith prosecution over which he prevailed.” Attorney Beau Brindley filed the 18-page request with U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber late Monday (Oct. 17), the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

A federal jury last month convicted Kelly of producing child pornography and enticing minor girls for sex, but found Kelly and McDavid not guilty of conspiring to rig a 2008 trial in which Kelly was acquitted on state child pornography charges. A third co-defendant, Milton Brown, was acquitted of receiving child pornography.

Such motions are exceedingly rare and do not often succeed, in large part because defendants who are acquitted of criminal charges do not have a right to compensation. In his motion, Brindley said prosecutors knew the testimony of two key witnesses was “necessarily incoherent.”

“This is, by definition, a reckless disregard for the truth, which constitutes a frivolous and vexatious position by the government,” he wrote. “This entitles Mr. McDavid to reasonable attorney’s fees.”

During the trial, prosecutors maintained there was compelling evidence that McDavid was aware that Kelly was producing child pornography and that he sought for years to conceal evidence of what Kelly was doing.

Brindley said McDavid still owes $600,000 in legal fees and “must now liquidate real property and other assets in an attempt to pay.” Brindley also wrote that he and others spent at least 1,220 hours working on the case and that adds up to about $65,000 less than what a “reasonable market rate” of $750 an hour would cost a client.

Kelly has not yet been sentenced in the Chicago federal case, but he was sentenced earlier this year to 30 years in prison for a federal conviction in New York on racketeering and sex trafficking charges.

Lil Baby Addresses Rumored Migos Beef

Lil Baby has addressed the rumors that there’s a beef brewing between himself and Migos.

The Atlanta rap star sat down for an interview with Posted on the Corner on Tuesday (October 18), where he set the record straight on his relationship with Quavo, Takeoff and Offset.

As Lil Baby explained, he has no issues with the Culture trio and the reason he hasn’t spoken about it until now is because he prefers not to feed into the speculation that suggests otherwise.

“Hell nah!” he replied when asked if there are “underlying issues” between himself and Migos. “I don’t even want to comment on that type of stuff. I feel like when I comment on something, it makes it bigger.

“First of all, I really don’t see shit on the internet. People send me shit and I be wanting to comment, but then I feel like that’s just gonna make it even more… But they know I ain’t got nothing going on with them.”

Rumors of a rift between Lil Baby and Migos circulated in 2020 after an alleged altercation between Offset and Baby’s 4PF crew, which Akademiks suggested was over Baby climbing the pecking order at Quality Control Music, the Atlanta-based label both acts are signed to.

Things seemingly flared up this past summer when Offset sued Quality Control over his solo catalog, prompting what appeared to be a subliminal response from the “Drip Too Hard” hitmaker and label CEO Pierre “Pee” Thomas.

“Aye, Baby, read what it say on the back,” Pee told the rapper, referring to a painting hanging on the wall, in an Instagram video posted shortly after Offset filed the lawsuit. Lil Baby replied: “Show must go on!”

Lil Baby’s rumored 2021 fling with Quavo’s ex-girlfriend Saweetie has also cropped up in recent weeks after the Migos rapper appeared to reference it on Only Built For Infinity Links, his joint album with Takeoff.

“I said ‘Caresha, please’ ’cause she too messy / Bitch fucked my dawg behind my back but I ain’t stressin’ / You wanted the gang? You shoulda just said it, we would’ve just blessed it / Now shit got messy,” he rapped on the aptly titled “Messy.”

Fans believe Lil Baby responded to Quavo on his own new album It’s Only Me. “I don’t want yo bitch, we can’t swap out / They ain’t on shit, tell ’em to pop out,” he rapped on “Stand On It.”

The line seemingly referenced an Instagram Story from Quavo that read: “Ain’t trippin we can swap it out! #QCTheLabel,” which was posted shortly after Saweetie was spotted sitting on what appeared to be Lil Baby’s lap.

Elsewhere, on “Not Finished,” Lil Baby seemingly addressed the aforementioned picture by rapping: “She post a picture without my permission / Got me in some shit, man, these women is wild.”

Dame Dash Says He’s ‘Worried’ About Kanye West’s Wellbeing: ‘I Want Him To Live’

Dame Dash has admitted he’s worried about Kanye West‘s wellbeing following his recent outbursts.

During a recent trip to London, the Roc-A-Fella co-founder — who signed Ye to the label in 2002 — appeared on Kick Game‘s sneaker shopping series and was asked about his current thoughts on Kanye.

“He’s my brother,” he began. “[We don’t talk] constantly – when he needs me and when I’m worried about him. What you think? I’m worried about him. N-gga, can I ask you a question? Is he bipolar or not, did he tell you that? So if you checked off the boxes of bipolar, is he acting that? So then leave it at that.”

He continued: “Worry about his health if you care about him at all. I’m just saying, man, regardless to what he’s saying, it’s the way he’s saying it. I don’t care what he’s saying, I want him to live. Y’all worried about the wrong shit.

“If you know a man has a problem and you know he might be checking the boxes off for the symptoms of that problem, why do you judge him as if he doesn’t have a problem? It’s not logical.”

Dame Dash reiterated his support for Kanye West and called for people to show compassion to him during what appears to be another mental health episode.

“Why you put the camera on him instead of sending him a prescription or a doctor or some therapist?” he added. “Let’s have some compassion for a man that may be not so well at that moment. If he told you transparently that he has a problem, respect it.

“How do you show you’re concerned? You start talking about the ways to help. Instead of asking about what’s wrong with [him], give [him] the cure. We all know the problem.”

Kanye West has come under heavy fire recently for wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt, making numerous anti-Semitic comments and his controversial Drink Champs interview, in which he suggested George Floyd was killed by fentanyl and not a cop kneeling on his neck.

On Tuesday night’s (Oct. 18) episode of The Voice, Parijita Bastola and the Marilynds did just that with a Bee Gees “Battle.”

Coached by John Legend, both acts hit their smooth targets, creating a difficult choice for their mentor.

“I’ve worked with some duos on this show,” says Blake Shelton of Kasey and Lindsay Marilynd, and there’s always one person that’s a little ahead of the other.” Not this time. “It’s just so locked in together.”

Bastola, the 17-year-old Nepalese-American hopeful, impressed the country star with her “unique” and “powerful” voice.

Camila Cabello likened the Marilynds’ harmonies to “dripping a vanilla candle into my ear,” but the teen, with her vocal mastery at such a young age, is at another level. “It seems effortless and you have such a gorgeous voice.”

Legend had a decision to make. The Marilynds, the pop-country duo, both from Maryland, “you all just leaned into those harmonies,” he says. “It was flawless. The quality of your execution today, it was just really, really strong.”

Bastola, however, is a step ahead. “There’s something where you just feel like you’re connected to who you are. And it’s just amazing that that amount of self-awareness, self-knowledge, self-possession is coming from someone so young. And your voice is just phenomenal. It feels so inviting.”

It was a hard decision, so hard that Legend went with Bastola, and used his only “Save” on the Marilynds, keeping them all in the family – and the competition. Everyone wins.

Pinterest Partners With Warner Music, Merlin and BMG

Warner Music Group, Warner Chappell Music, BMG and the independents’ digital rights agency Merlin have struck content arrangements with Pinterest, a move that will enable the imaging sharing and social platform’s millions of users to interact with popular music.

Announced Wednesday (Oct. 19), Pinterest’s raft of partnerships which will allow its community to add tracks to their Idea Pins from a global catalog, including works by Ed Sheeran, Silk Sonic, Anitta, and many others.

WMG becomes the first major label to partner with Pinterest, highlighting the music giant’s commitment to bringing music to fans to create and engage with via short-form video content, a rep explains.

“The future of media will be founded on music,” comments Oana Ruxandra, chief digital officer & EVP, business development, WMG, in a statement. “WMG, including our publishing partners at Warner Chappell, is incredibly excited to partner with Pinterest to help inspire their users to engage, design, and imagine. Together, the creative potential for Pinterest audiences will be virtually endless.”

The content drop is powered by 7Digital, the B2B digital music solutions platform, and expands on Pinterest’s existing royalty-free music library. Music micro-licensing expert Rumblefish is providing Pinterest with music metadata and license management services, a statement explains.

“This partnership has been a truly collaborative process to visualize how Pinterest creators can make music a more integral part of their experience on the platform,” add Jeremy Sirota, CEO, Merlin. “We are excited to make independent music part of Pinterest’s exciting feature. Merlin members are excited to see the content that emerges from it.”

As Pinterest introduces a library of licensed major label and independent music, the San Francisco-based business presses the button on a new music feature to make it even easier for Pinners and creators to find and add their favorite tracks to Idea Pins.

“Music plays a vital role in elevating storytelling and empowering storytellers, creators, and Pinners who inspire the world every day on Pinterest,” comments Malik Ducard, chief content officer, Pinterest. “We are thrilled to partner with Warner Music Group, Warner Chappell Music, Merlin, and BMG to bring the latest music tracks to our platform and elevate the content and inspiration created on Pinterest.”

Little Simz Wins Mercury Prize 2022

Little Simz’s fourth studio album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert is the winner of Britain’s Mercury Prize, beating out a shortlist that included chart-topping LPs from Harry Styles, Wet Leg and Sam Fender.

With her victory, Simz scoops a cash prize of £25,000 ($28,000), a special trophy, and the sort of exposure that typically launches the winning record back into the U.K. chart.

Sometimes I Might Be Introvert dropped in 2021 via Age 101, and peaked at No. 4 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart, easily eclipsing her previous career best, No. 87 for her 2019 release Grey Area.

Born and raised in London, Little Simz (real name Simbiatu “Simbi” Abisola Abiola Ajikawo) enjoyed a breakthrough with her 2010 debut mixtape, Stratosphere. The Mercury Prize could launch her own career into the stratosphere.

She’s no stranger to awards nights. Earlier this year, the rapper won the Brit Award for best new act, she’s won Ivor Novellos, MOBO Awards, and now, bragging rights for having produced the album of the year.

Speaking from the stage at Hammersmith’s Eventim Apollo on Tuesday (Oct. 18), Simz admitted she was “very very overwhelmed” with her win.

Paying tribute to all the other nominated records, she added, “We all made incredible albums, we all change people’s lives with our music and that’s the most important thing. So this is for us really.”

Little Simz and other shortlisted artists performed during the 2022 final, which was initially postponed when Queen Elizabeth II died.

The Mercury Prize was launched in 1992 to celebrate the best of British and Irish music across a range of contemporary music genres. Today, it’s considered the music equivalent to the Booker Prize for literature and the Turner Prize for art, its music industry panel judging the entries and ultimate winner on artistic achievement.

Previous winners have included Pulp, Portishead, Arctic Monkeys, James Blake and Arlo Parks, who took the prize last year for her album Collapsed in Sunbeams.

First, Blink-182 reunited with Tom DeLonge, then gave us new music in the form of “Edging,” with its official music video. The skate-punk favorites give us a little more action, this time with the “alternate version” of “Edging.”

Cole Bennett returns to direct the fun new clip, which features the trio at a circus, surrounded by adults dressed as bunnies, and cameos from Lil Tracy and Bennett himself.

Matters take a dark turn, as DeLonge, Mark Hoppus, and Travis Barker showcase their knife-throwing skills with the rabbits the hapless targets.

It’s more Monty Python than Donnie Darko, as the floppy-eared friends get taken out.

“Oh no, look at the mess we started,” sings DeLonge and Hoppus. Indeed.

Bennett, the Lyrical Lemonade chief, videographer and music video director, has worked on music videos for Juice Wrld, Jack Harlow, Lil Durk, The Kid Laroi and many more.

Blink is very much back. Just last week, the rockers announced that the group’s classic lineup would reunite for a new album, led by “Edging,” marking the first time in a decade that the three founders had been in the studio together.

DeLonge, who had previously left the group in 2014 and was replaced by Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba, tweeted that “‘Edging’ is fun, and a perfect way to remind u of the fun again. But just u f—ing wait.”

A world tour will follow. Produced by Live Nation, the global jaunt includes the trio’s first-ever performances in Latin America along with runs in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand starting March 2023 and running through February 2024.

The Australia tour announcement, LN reports, “has received an extraordinary response from fans” as three extra arena dates are added to the itinerary.
