Kygo to Debut Winter Edition of Palm Tree Music Festival In Aspen With Co-Headliner Jack White

Kygo may be mostly closed associated with swaying palm trees and gentle ocean waves, but the producer’s Palm Tree Music Festival is expanding to a location with a lot more snow.

Today (Nov. 30), the producer announces his Palm Music Tree festival will set-up shop in the ski haven of Aspen, Colorado this Feb. 24-25.

Kygo will headline one night of the event, with Jack White headlining the second. The rest of the lineup includes Gryffin, King Princess, Cannons and Forester, with additional acts to be announced in the coming months.

“Aspen holds a special place in our hearts, and we love spending time there,” Kygo tells Billboard. “We thought it would be fun to bring to the festival to a beautiful location that has provided so many incredible memories over the years and with partners who are like family to us.”

The Aspen edition of Palm Tree Music Festival is produced by Kygo’s own Palm Tree Crew, along with Belly Up Aspen and C3 Presents. This is the event’s first ever winter edition, with the other U.S. show happening in The Hamptons this past June and additional recent editions in Croatia and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

While winter temperatures are perhaps counterintuitive to the sea breeze and boats of Kygo persona, the Aspen edition of Palm Tree Music festival does much to expand the leisure-centric lifestyle brand that the Norwegian producer born Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll and his manger Myles Shear have built over the years. In Kygo’s Billboard cover story this past March, the pair noted how their goal with Palm Tree is to emulate Jimmy Buffett’s massively successful Margaritaville lifestyle brand.

This makes the upcoming Aspen event something of a full circle moment, with Kygo and Shear first meeting the AM radio icon years ago at the Belly Up venue in — you guessed it — Aspen.

“To be able to produce an event like this here in our community is something we have been diligently working on for a long time,” say David and Danny Goldberg of Belly Up Aspen.

“We are super proud to launch our first winter edition of Palm Tree Music Festival in Aspen and build something that has never been done during the peak winter season in the middle of downtown Aspen,” adds Shear. “Palm Tree Crew is making history here in Aspen and we are stoked to finally see this event come to life.

Tickets for Palm Tree Music Festival Aspen go on sale tomorrow (Dec. 1.)

Tucker portrays a country music singer who is overwhelmed with her work on an over-the-top Hollywood production and seeks respite by retreating to her grandmother’s Tennessee farm. However, she also finds much-needed reconnection on several levels, from rekindling a romance with an ex-lover, returning to her own musical roots, and discovering a unique familial bond when she realizes three children who have outsmarted the local foster care system are instead residing at the family’s property.

In addition to Tucker, the cast includes Keith Carradine, Ana Oritz and Olivia Sanabia. Tucker also serves as an executive producer on the project, alongside Stephanie Slack, Margret Huddleston, Ali Spuck and Kristofer McNeeley.

“It’s amazing that after 50 years in this business, I get to see my dreams become reality! And being part of A Nashville Country Christmas is definitely one of them,” Tucker said in a statement. “I’ve always wanted to do more acting, and it was a gift from the good Lord when this role came along. I can’t wait for everyone to enjoy the movie this season.”

The film was produced by Andrew Gernhard and Dustin Rikert, and directed by Ashley Williams. For MTV Entertainment Studios, executive producers include Trevor Rose, Leslie Fram, Amal Baggar, Andrew Lutin and Donny Hugo Herran.

An encore presentation of A Nashville Country Christmas will air Sunday, Dec. 25, at 11 a.m. ET on CMT.

The romantic holiday movie is the latest film project for two-time CMA Award winner Tucker, who recently teamed with Brandi Carlile for the documentary The Return of Tanya Tucker, which chronicles Tucker’s five decades in the music industry, as well as the making of her Grammy-winning album While I’m Livin’ (produced by Carlile and Shooter Jennings). Over the years, Tucker has also appeared in several TV movies and series, including 1979’s The Rebels and 1981’s The Love Boat. In 2005, she starred in and served as executive producer for the reality series Tuckerville.

Kesha’s ‘Warrior’ at 10: Every Song Ranked From Worst to Best

After bursting onto the pop scene in 2009 as the featured vocalist on Flo Rida’s “Right Round” and with her own Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 “Tik Tok,” Kesha (going by Ke$ha at the time) quickly established herself as one of the top party-girl singers of her generation. After the success of her debut album Animal and its follow-up EP Cannibal (both 2010), Kesha took her second studio album, Warrior, as an opportunity to show the world there was more to her than just tipsy club anthems.

Released 10 years ago (Nov. 30, 2012 in Australia; Dec. 4, 2012 in America), Warrior saw Kesha building upon the pop aesthetic she had already established—one of joy, fun and freedom—while realizing more of her potential as an artist, successfully incorporating rock, punk and country into her existing palette of pop, hip-hop and dance. On top of that, Warrior saw her becoming more lyrically raw and personal on a handful of tracks — this newfound vulnerability helped manifest the album’s central theme of embracing your inner warrior.

While Warrior didn’t achieve as much success as the Billboard 200-topping Animal, peaking at No. 6 on that chart, its lead single “Die Young” was a commercial success, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Subsequent singles “C’Mon” and “Crazy Kids” peaked at Nos. 27 and 40, respectively.

Ultimately, the album continued to demonstrate Kesha’s star power and ability to make a mark on the pop music industry — and in some ways, it gave hints of what was to come on her triumphant return in 2017 with Rainbow.

Here, we rank all the standard tracks of Warrior in celebration of it turning 10.

Camilo and Evaluna Montaner Make Sweet Harmony on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’: Watch

Riding off the wave of a top-charting album (De Adentro Pa Afuera), Billboard Español cover love, and a handful of Latin Grammy nominations to boot, Camilo arrived on late-night television on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Tuesday (Nov. 29).

The mustachioed Colombian artist was joined by his wife, Venezuelan singer and actress Evaluna Montaner, to sing their charming pop duet “Índigo,” which is also, sweetly, the name of their daughter. The performance opened up with its characteristic sunny electric guitar riff, and backed by mid-tempo drumming, but adding more acoustic guitar jangle than the original recorded version.

Camilo arrived barefoot as usual in green boho-styled pants, and Evaluna was clad in a black one-piece with colorful embroidered butterflies. Together, their vocals created beautiful harmony. “How can you dream about someone you have never even met?/ I don’t know if it’s possible, but I’ve been dreaming about you for a long time now,” they sang in Spanish.

“That process of being with Indigo from inside to outside began to generate a bunch of feelings inside me that I didn’t know I had. And seeing them made me immortalize them in songs,” Camilo told Billboard Español in September. “It was a process of, ‘Go downstairs, look at Evaluna’s belly, write a song; go downstairs, look at Evaluna’s belly and play guitar.’ They were some of the prettiest days in my life.”

“Índigo” is the first single from his third album, and the tune premiered in October of last year. Yet there is somewhat of a déjà vu moment going on with the late-night appearance. On Nov. 6, 2021, Camilo and his wife joined the late-night-show stage — but with the other Jimmy on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Since then, the track has received many accolades. The pop ballad peaked at No. 3 on Billboard‘s Latin Pop Airplay chart, reached No. 21 on the Hot Latin Songs chart, and No. 16 on Latin Airplay. “Índigo” also won best couple song at Premio Juventud 2022, and was nominated for song of the year at the 2022 Latin Grammys.

With the continued rise of Latin music, more and more Latin music performers are making their way to late-night talk shows. This year, viewers saw Sebastian Yatra and Becky G on Kimmel, as well as Rauw Alejandro, Rosalía, Maluma, Anitta rock the screen. For the complete list of all the Latin artists on late-night TV in 2021 and 2022, check out this list.

BTS Docuseries ‘Monuments: Beyond the Star’ Due Out on Disney+ in 2023

The new year will bring a bounty of BTS material for ARMY. In the midst of the group’s ongoing hiatus and flurry of solo activity, Disney+ has announced that it will air a documentary series about the K-pop icons in 2023 that promises to feature plenty of unseen footage from throughout their rise to global stardom.

BTS Monuments: Beyond the Star is described as a “music docu-series” focusing on the seven-member group that will stream exclusively on Disney+ that will “chart the incredible journey of 21st century pop icons BTS,” according to NME. Promising “unprecedented access,” the series will feature music and video footage shot over the band’s nine-year career, as well as a look at their daily lives and thoughts as they plan for their “second chapter.”

In a preview video unveiled on Wednesday (Nov. 30) on the Disney+ Singapore Twitter feed, the band promise that the series will feature the timeline of their growth and music from the beginning through today via “candid stories that have never been told.” Spokespeople for BTS and Disney+ could not be reached for comment at press time about the air date of the show in the United States.

Disney+ hasn’t yet announced when the shows will air in the U.S. “I hope you find new sides of us that are previously unseen,” Jungkook says at the end of the clip. BTS announced in July that they were going on hiatus, later promising to reunite at some point. In the meantime, they are all working on solo projects and the members are expected to begin signing up for their mandatory military service.

In the meantime, Jungkook recently performed at the opening ceremony for the World Cup in Qatar and RM is preparing the release of his debut solo album, Indigo, due out on Friday (Dec. 2).

‘Thriller’ Turns 40: How Michael Jackson Moonwalked the Music Business Out of a Recession

For record executives, the story of Michael Jackson‘s Thriller begins in 1979, three years before the album came out, when disco crashed and record stores returned millions of unwanted LPs to major labels. That year, recorded-music revenues dropped 10% from the previous year prior, according to RIAA data, and vinyl sales were just beginning to decline after years of growth. CBS Records had massive layoffs that summer; Warner Bros. followed with 55 in December.

“When I came in on Monday, there were half-smoked cigarettes in ashtrays and half-typed memos in typewriters,” recalls Jim Urie, then CBS’ New York branch manager, who pink-slipped 40 on his staff. “It was really, really brutal.”

The industry-wide malaise, coinciding with a worldwide recession, lasted two or three years. “It was the first time all of us young people in the music business had business hit us in the face,” says Dan Beck, Epic Records’ head of publicity at the time, who recalls another “major” wave of company wide CBS layoffs in summer 1982. “One of the first things people cut back was the disposable income — so if somebody bought three or four albums a month, and now they only bought one or two, that was pretty dramatic to our business.”

Thriller, released exactly 40 years ago, on Nov. 30, 1982, helped usher in the music business’ comeback, along with the explosive growth of MTV and the adoption of the compact disc. Jackson’s follow-up to 1979’s Off the Wall took off instantly, beginning with the opening single, “The Girl Is Mine,” a duet with Paul McCartney designed to cross the album over to a white radio audience. All seven of its singles would land in the top 10 of the Hot 100, and the album would spend 37 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Thriller coaxed fans back into record stores to buy multiple copies, thus providing labels with resources to market Madonna, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper and, later, hair-metal bands. At the end of 1981, CBS Records, which owned Epic at the time, took in $1 billion in revenue, its worst earnings since 1971; by the end of 1983, its net income increased 26% to $187 million.

“It pulled the music industry out of the doldrums,” says Larry Stessel, then Epic’s West Coast marketing vp. “It helped pull us out of the disco days and it became a whole new world.”

Stessel, who worked closely with Jackson on music videos, says the industry recession from roughly 1979 to 1983 helped his staff learn to economize — which made Epic and other labels leaner and stronger when the business came back.

Michael Jackson's

“It allowed us to utilize our dollars more efficiently, develop local campaigns — if you could break an artist out of Kansas City, then obviously your next goal was to spread it to St. Louis, and maybe your next stop would be Milwaukee or Chicago or Detroit, depending where the airplay was,” he recalls. “It made us smarter marketing people when the doors opened up again after Thriller was released.”

Famously, Thriller‘s sales run kept going and going — it spiked after every new single and video, and surged after Jackson did the moonwalk during NBC’s Motown 25 anniversary special in May 1983. Today, Jackson’s label, Sony, claims Thriller as the best-selling global album of all time; in the U.S., according to the Recording Industry Association of America, it is 34 times platinum, behind the Eagles’ Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, at 38 times platinum. Even as Jackson’s legacy is tainted with allegations of child sexual abuse in HBO’s 2019 documentary Leaving Neverland, the album has generated 3.87 million U.S. album-equivalent units in the past 10 years, including 1.2 million in physical album sales, according to Luminate.

“I knew then,” Stessel says of Thriller‘s staying power. “We started literally selling 1.2 million copies over the country every week. The album went from 4 to 6 million copies to 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.”

Thriller did more than reverse CBS Records’ fortunes in the early ’80s. It helped encourage Sony Corp. to buy the label home of Jackson, Springsteen, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond and many other stars for $2 billion in 1988. The idea was to unite software (music) with Sony’s new hardware (compact discs), and Thriller was the most valuable content of all. “You don’t buy Michael Jackson because he sounds like somebody else. You buy him because he resonates with you,” says Mickey Schulhof, then Sony’s top executive in the U.S. “Having content, we knew, was going to be an important part of Sony’s future, and the largest content library in the record industry was CBS Records. It was an easy decision.”

Thriller made Urie, CBS’ New York branch manager back then, forget those painful 1979 layoffs — almost. “If you have a big enough record — and this is certainly true today — it throws off so much profit over its lifetime that it really can change things,” he says. “It cures all ills.”

Bad Bunny & Karol G Are Among the Most Streamed Latin Artists on Spotify in 2022

For the third year running, Bad Bunny was the most streamed artist in the world on Spotify in 2022, the music streamer announced Wednesday (Nov. 30). While the Puerto Rican artist last year did not have an album among the five most streamed on the platform, this time, his Un Verano Sin Ti ends the year as the most streamed album globally and the most streamed in the U.S., besting Harry Styles and Olivia Rodrigo.

In the most streamed songs category, Styles’ “As It Was” leads, but Bunny still placed two songs in the top five: “Me Porto Bonito” with Chencho Corleone and “Tití me Preguntó” at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

Beyond Bunny, the most streamed Latin artists on Spotify in 2022 were J Balvin, Rauw Alejandro, Daddy Yankee and Karol G., with slight variations in order between the U.S. and the world. While Balvin came in second in streams in the U.S., Alejandro bested him globally, with Yankee coming in at No. 4 and Karol G at No. 5.

The “Provenza” singer was the most streamed female Latin artist in the world for the third consecutive year. She was followed by Shakira and Rosalía, while Latin heritage artists Camila Cabello and Selena Gomez came in at Nos. 4 and 5 respectively.

All told, there are 10 Latin artists within the Top 50 global most-streamed artists: Rauw Alejandro is the 11th most-streamed artist of the year, followed by J Balvin (#19), Daddy Yankee (#25) and Karol G (#27). Additional artists within the top 50 include Ozuna (#38), Anuel AA (#39), Feid (#48), Bizarrap (#49), and Lin-Manuel Miranda (#50).
