Spotify Launches Global LGBTQ Music Program GLOW in Support of Queer Artists

The LGBTQ community has a long history of influencing music history for the better — be it through the creation of whole genres, the success of mainstream queer artists or otherwise. Now, Spotify wants to help amplify that influence.

On Tuesday (Jan. 24), the streaming service debuted their latest music program, GLOW. The project — much like fellow equity global music programs EQUAL and Frequency for female and Black creators, respectively — is specifically catered to LGBTQ artists, aiming to “elevate LGBTQIA+ creators, both on and off platform,” according to Spotify.

To fulfill that goal, GLOW will have a year-round hub on the platform housing LGBTQ-dedicated playlists for fans to discover new music from queer-identifying artists, with new playlists set to be introduced each month. One of these playlists is a global flagship playlist of the same name, featuring LGBTQ voices from around the world and refreshing each month with new offerings.

As with previous equity programs at Spotify, GLOW will also benefit from a “360 program,” which will provide opportunities for editiorial and marketing partnerships with other major brands as well as providing charitable giving to organizations benefiting LGBTQ arts causes, including QORDS, Black Trans Femmes in the Arts (The BTFA Collective), It Gets Better and more.

GLOW will additionally shine a spotlight on different LGBTQ artists every month, with 11 — including Sam Smith, Arlo Parks, Tove Lo and Pabllo Vittar — showcased at launch. Future spotlight artists will be featured on Spotify’s For the Record editorial channel as well as on a Times Square billboard.

Cahleb Derry, an associate manager of music marketing at Spotify, said in a statement that the aim of GLOW was to provide needed support for a community that often doesn’t receive it. “The question we go back to is, ‘How do we tangibly influence the resources that LGBTQIA+ artists have?’” he said. “We know that a lot of artists only get hit up in June during Pride to do campaigns. And then July 1 hits and there’s no work to be found again … we, at Spotify, have a responsibility as the largest music audio platform in the world to fill in these gaps.”

The GLOW launch is a bright spot that comes amid Spotify’s announcement on Monday that they would be cutting 6% of their global workforce and that chief content & advertising business officer Dawn Ostroff would be departing her role. “I hoped to sustain the strong tailwinds from the pandemic and believed that our broad global business and lower risk to the impact of a slowdown in ads would insulate us,” Daniel Ek said in a note to employees posted on the company’s website. “In hindsight, I was too ambitious in investing ahead of our revenue growth.”

One of New York City’s most unique identifiers is no longer. The graffiti from a very popular tunnel in Washington Heights has been repainted to the ire of some residents.

As spotted on Gothamist the Department of Transportation gave the 191st Street 1 train tunnel in Upper Manhattan a noticeable makeover. On Friday, January 20 a crew of employees repainted the underground passageway in an effort to remove all the graffiti that had been there for decades.

The project was not announced prior to it starting and even local were taken aback by the surprise remodeling. “The continual lack of transparency has long damaged our community’s trust; we are angered and disappointed by the lack of notification and care employed by the Department of Transportation in panting the tunnel without community engagement or planning” a joint statement from Council Member Carmen De La Rosa & Nira E. Leyva-Gutiérrez, Executive Director at NoMAA read.

When news of the project spread it quickly drew backlash from locals. “What happened here is just a slap in the face to the community,” said Luiggy Gomez, Washington Heights resident. “They erased history.” Naturally the controversy prompted the DOT to respond. Vincent Barone, a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation, did not explain why the repainting occurred but shared that the tunnel will receive new artwork in the near future. “We look forward to working closely with the community and local elected officials on a project that celebrates the culture and diversity that makes New York so special,” he said.

At this time the Department of Transportation has not shared details about the forthcoming art project for the tunnel.

Cher Shows Off Diamond Ring Gifted By Boyfriend Alexander ‘AE’ Edwards aka Amber Rose’s Ex

Apparently, Cher is out here living her best life at age 76 with her current (and possibly forever?) boo-thang, who is 40 years younger.

A video is floating around the interwebs that shows the “Believe” singer out for a night on the town with 36-year-old music exec Alexander “AE” Edwards, aka Amber Rose’s ex. According to People, the couple was out for dinner in Beverly Hills last Thursday (Jan. 19(, when Cher was approached by a reporter who asked about her engagement (did y’all know they were engaged? I didn’t know they were engaged) providing her with the opportunity to show off the matrimonial bling-bling Edwards reportedly gifted her on Christmas day.

Cher was probably eager to show that her boyfriend put a ring on it (allegedly), since, apparently, she’s been defending her decision to date a man who was not born until she was 40.

From People:

In November 2022, Cher opened up about the public reaction to her relationship. “Haters are gonna hate … Doesn’t matter that we’re happy and not bothering anyone,” she tweeted

“LOVE DOESN’T KNOW MATH, IT SEES ❤️ ❤️,” Cher added in a since-deleted tweet captured by The Shade Room.

In another tweet on Jan. 12, the Grammy winner, who has expressed that the pair “kiss like teenagers,” posted a very simple update about her beau.

I meeeean, that might be a little TMI—but hey, cheers to the happy couple. Congrats!

Missy Elliott Can’t Wait to Collab With Jack Harlow in Preview of Doritos Super Bowl LVII Ad… But Not Like That

We just found out about the second point in Jack Harlow‘s super spicy “love triangle.” On Tuesday morning (Jan. 24), Doritos unveiled the second preview of its Super Bowl LVII ad, revealing that none other than hip-hop icon Missy Elliott is getting in on the snack attack.

In the 15-second preview, Elliott is chilling at the studio surrounded by platinum record plaques (holding a bag of Doritos, of course) when her phone rings with a call she’s been waiting for. “Jack Harlow,” she practically sings upon answering. “What’s up? Collab? You know I’ve been waiting to collab,” she tells the unseen “First Class” MC.

“A love triangle?” Elliott then adds incredulously. “I don’t know about that.” According to Doritos, both rappers will appear in the big game ad slated to run during the Feb. 12 game at State Farm Stadium in Glandale, Arizona.

In the previous ad starring Harlow, he walks down a red carpet as paparazzi scream his name, with one snapper in particular smushing his face up against the limo window to ask Jack a very important question. As Harlow gets a moment’s peace inside his ride and begins digging into a bag of the brand’s new sweet and tangy BBQ Doritos, the pap yells, “Is it true about the love triangle?” Harlow considers the question before popping a three-corner chip into his mouth and slyly saying, “Maybe.” The photog, however, mishears him and yells, “Baby? You’re having a baby?”

Harlow is just one of the A-list names on tap for this year’s championship game, joining Rihanna, who will be headlining the halftime show. Last year’s viral Doritos SB ad featured Megan Thee Stallion and 2021’s was soundtracked by Queen’s 1984 hit “I Want to Break Free” and famously featured actor Matthew McConaughey in the bizarro role of #FlatMatthew. The 2020 version featured a dance-off between Lil Nas X and Sam Elliott in a wild west showdown cued to LNX’s global hit “Old Town Road.”

Jay-Z-Funded Lawsuits End as Mississippi Improves Prison Conditions

Attorneys hired by Jay-Z and other entertainers have ended two lawsuits they filed on behalf of Mississippi inmates in 2020 over what they said were squalid living conditions at the state’s oldest prison — a facility that came under Justice Department scrutiny after outbursts of deadly violence by inmates.

Even before the violence at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman in late 2019 and early 2020, state health inspectors had found repeated problems with broken toilets and moldy showers. Inmates said some cell doors did not lock, and it was common to see rats and roaches.

The lawsuits were dismissed Jan. 13 after the inmates’ attorneys and the state Department of Corrections said improvements have been made during the past three years, including installing air conditioning in most of the prison, renovating some bathrooms and updating the electrical, water and sewer systems.

In April, the U.S. Justice Department issued a report that said Parchman had violated inmates’ constitutional rights. The department said the prison failed to protect inmates from violence, meet their mental health needs or take adequate steps for suicide prevention, and that the prison had relied too much on prolonged solitary confinement.

The Justice Department spent two years investigating Parchman. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said in April that Mississippi Department of Corrections officials cooperated with the investigation and pledged to resolve problems.

U.S. District Judge Sharion Aycock in northern Mississippi filed the order this month dismissing the lawsuits that were funded by Jay-Z; rapper Yo Gotti; and Team Roc, the philanthropic arm of Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. In a court filing, attorneys for the plaintiffs and for the defendants in the Mississippi Department of Corrections agreed that nobody involved in the lawsuits admitted liability or responsibility to anyone else in the suits.

“We’re pleased that Parchman has started to address the cruel and inhumane prison conditions after the Department of Justice’s investigation, but we aren’t satisfied with short-term improvements,” Mario Mims, who goes by the stage name Yo Gotti, said in a statement Monday (Jan. 22). “The Mississippi Department of Corrections has neglected these torturous living conditions for decades, so we will continue to hold them accountable and ensure they commit to creating long-lasting change that safely protects their incarcerated population.”

One lawsuit was filed in January 2020 and the other was filed a month later. They two were eventually merged. The second suit said Parchman was a violent, rat-infested place where inmates lived in “abhorrent conditions” and their medical needs were routinely ignored.

Burl Cain, a former Louisiana prison warden, became commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Corrections in May 2020 and vowed to improve conditions at Parchman. Since then, the department has moved some inmates to other prisons. Parchman had more than 3,200 inmates in December 2019; it has about 2,450 this month.

“The Mississippi Department of Corrections appreciates the tremendous responsibility of housing individuals sentenced to our care, custody and control and has always been committed to continuously improving the living conditions of the individuals housed in all of our correctional facilities, including the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman,” Courtney Cockrell, an attorney for the department, said in a statement Monday. “Accordingly, we have and will continue to make diligent efforts to improve the quality of life for all individuals in the custody of the MDOC and provide them with opportunities to successfully return to their communities.”

Violence has been a longstanding problem in Mississippi prisons, where many jobs for guards have gone unfilled. Officials with the state Department of Corrections have said for years that it is difficult to find people to work as guards because of low pay, long hours and dangerous conditions. The state increased pay during the past two years.

The Justice Department said last year that it found “gross understaffing” and “uncontrolled gang activity.” It also found that insufficient security gave inmates “unfettered access to contraband.” Parchman was founded in 1901 on the site of a former plantation. For decades, inmates worked in a farming operation that critics said was akin to slavery.

Dua Lipa Receives European ‘Excellence Award’

Dua Lipa has accumulated quite the collection of trophies, from Grammys to Brit Awards, Guinness World Records and now, and the European Excellence Award.

The pop superstar received the Excellence Award over the weekend, an honor that recognizes positive representation of European culture through an artist’s music, and the best in the business from the ESNS Exchange, previously known as European Talent Exchange Programme.

Only those acts that are seen as strong ambassadors for European music, and as role models for fellow European stars-on-the-rise, are considered for the hardware.

Lipa, who is British of Albanian origin, nails the brief.

Her career has gone supernova in recent years. In March 2022, Lipa’s hit “Levitating” logged a 70th week on the Billboard Hot 100, in doing so rewriting the record for the most weeks ever spent on the survey for a song by a woman. Among all acts, “Levitating” is just the fifth single to spend at least 70 weeks on the Hot 100, dating to the chart’s August 1958 inception.

Earlier, in 2021,”Levitating” was named the top Hot 100 song for the year in the United States, and its parent album, Future Nostalgia, logged four weeks at No. 1 in the U.K., before scooping British album of the year at the BRITs.

ESNS presented Lipa with the award during her keynote interview for Eurosonic Noorderslag 2023 in Groningen, the Netherlands, at which she discussed the release of her sophomore album during the pandemic, the successful world tour in support of it, and the Lipas’ Sunny Hill Festival in the Kosovo capital, Prishtina which was shortlisted for the European Festival Awards and which they hope will put the country on the cultural map, and raise much-needed funds to develop the nation’s arts and cultural sector. Just last year, she was named honorary ambassador to Kosovo.

Lipa first performed at ESNS at Vera in 2016, and the following year won the European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA), now called the Music Moves Europe Awards (MMEA). Also in 2016, she won for newcomer of the year at the European Festival Awards.

The 27-year-old now turns her attention to the fashion world. As announced by Vogue on Wednesday (Jan. 18), she has signed on to be one of four 2023 co-chairs for the A-list fashion event that comes around every first Monday in May.

Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ Stands Tall on Midweek U.K. Chart

Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” (via Columbia) is sowing the seeds for a second week atop the U.K. chart.

Based on midweek sales and streaming data captured by the Official Charts Company, “Flowers” is “storming” ahead of its rivals.

If it holds its ground, “Flowers” would become the U.S. pop star’s longest-reigning U.K. No. 1, and her only single to spend multiple weeks at the summit. Her previous leaders “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” both logged single stints at No. 1 back in 2013.

“Flowers” got away to a fast start around the globe, smashing Spotify’s one-week streaming record, and bowing at No. 1 in Australia.

In the U.K., “Flowers” leads an unchanged top 5 on the midweek chart, which is completed by singles from Raye, SZA, Taylor Swift, and Venbee & Goddard, respectively.

Meanwhile, hot Afrobeats artist Rema is eying a new peak position with “Calm Down” (Mavin), up 9-6 on the Official Chart Update, while Tiësto and Tate McRae’s “10:35” (up 17-14 via Atlantic/Ministry of Sound) and Cian Ducrot’s “I Will Be Waiting” (up 23-19) are on the climb.

The highest new entry on the forthcoming Official U.K. Singles Chart could belong to Headie One, with “Martin’s Sofa” (Relentless) on track for a No. 9 debut. If it stays put, “Martin’s Sofa” would give the London rapper and songwriter a fifth U.K. top 10 and 13th top 40 appearance.

The only other new arrival in the midweek top 40 belongs to Ed Sheeran, with “F64” (Atlantic), the Brit’s tribute to his friend Jamal Edwards, the late founder of SBTV, who died in Feb. 2022 from cardiac arrhythmia after taking recreational drugs, aged 31.

“F64” is on target for a No. 33 start, which would give Sheeran his 58th top 40 hit.

All will be revealed when the national weekly chart is published this Friday (Jan. 27).

The Reytons Lead Midweek U.K. Albums Chart

The Reytons could ride all the way to No. 1 in the U.K. with What’s Rock And Roll? (via The Reytons), the British indie band’s third LP.

Formed in South Yorkshire, the Reytons take pole position on the midweek survey and, assuming the album continues to reach fans in the second half of the chart week, should set a new career-best performance.

The group previously cracked the top 40 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart with May Seriously Harm You And Others Around (No. 27) and Kids Off The Estate (No. 11), both from 2021.

It’s not the only rock album rolling to a top 5 berth. Black Star Riders are racing to No. 2 with Wrong Side Of Paradise (Earache), the band’s fifth studio album. Featuring several members of Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders bagged top 40 appearances with each of their previous four LPs: 2013’s All Hell Breaks Loose (No. 25), 2015’s The Killer Instinct (No. 13), 2017’s Heavy Fire (No. 6) and 2019’s Another State Of Grace (No. 14).

Meanwhile, 2021 Eurovision winners Måneskin are tracking for a first-ever U.K. top 10 album with Rush (Columbia). It’s new at No. 3 on the Official Chart Update.

The rockers — Damiano David, Victoria De Angelis, Ethan Torchio and Thomas Raggi — made history when, in June 2021, they landed two singles in the U.K. top 10 (“I Wanna Be Your Slave” and the cover “Beggin’”), becoming the first Italian act to do so. Måneskin previously impacted the Official U.K. Albums Chart with Teatro d’ira – Vol. I (No. 49), also from 2021.

Also eyeing a top 10 debut is Dublin outfit The Murder Capital, with Gigi’s Recovery (Human Season). It’s new at No. 7 on the chart blast. Meanwhile, recordings from electronic-leaning outfit Ladytron (Time’s Arrow at No. 17 via Cooking Vinyl), metal act Riverside (ID.Entity at No. 22 via Inside Out), Welsh artist and Velvet Underground founding member John Cale (Mercy at No. 37 via Double Six), and NYC rock band We Are Scientists (Lobes at No. 38 via 100 Percent Records) are set to make a splash.

All will be revealed when the Official U.K. Albums Chart is published Friday (Jan. 27).

From Jimin to Jeonghan, Which K-Pop Star Was Best-Dressed at 2023 Paris Fashion Week So Far? Vote!

Not only did Paris Fashion Week’s Fall/Winter 2023 menswear shows include more representation than ever from South Korea, but its stars also helped set the tone as ongoing evidence of the country’s importance in luxury fashion.

Opening PFW on Jan. 17, 2023, Saint Laurent delivered a show consisting of sleek trench coats and oversize blouses in its signature black and white color palette, with many looks boasting low cuts and ample skin shown despite the cold weather in Paris. Attendees included SEVENTEEN‘s Jeonghan, LØREN and TEN of NCT and WayV, who all embraced the night’s attitude, with the former two draped in chic coats while TEN bared his chest with a V-cut nearly down to his midriff.

After being named Givenchy’s newest global ambassador, Taeyang of BIGBANG returned to Paris again after last attending a show for the fashion house in 2014. With Givenchy creative director Matthew M. Williams’ collection detailed by distressed elements, plus layered hoodies and jackets, Taeyang’s tattered sweater and acid-washed jeans were all perfectly in line at the Jan. 18 showing.

BTSJimin took his new role as Dior’s global ambassador seriously with a crisp gray suit, while his bandmate J-Hope donned a dark-gray skirt-pant combo. Both looks beautifully matched the theme of elevated classics that Dior men’s artistic director Kim Jones brought to the runway on Jan. 20.

Elsewhere throughout the city of love, KARD‘s BM looked like he could have been part of Kenzo’s colorful Jan. 20 showcase with his vest, scarf and hat combo. Meanwhile, Louis Vuitton global ambassador Jackson Wang’s silhouette-lengthening jacket and J-Hope’s colorful camouflage both hit the mark in Vuitton’s unconventional show that included a performance from Rosalía on Jan. 19.
