“I want to have my album be welcomed by the people, I want it to have the same streams as singles do,” the Mexican chart-topping artist — whose previously released albums include Ah Y Qué? and Efectos Secundariostold Billboard. “I’m showing people another part of La Doble P.”

Génesis drops as Peso Pluma continues to make history on the charts. Most recently, the “Por Las Noches” singer became the first act to lead the Billboard Global 200 and the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. simultaneously with different songs: Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” and “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 55,” his Bizarrap-produced hit song. “Ella Baila Sola” spent five weeks atop the Billboard Global 200, becoming the ranking’s first leader for the regional Mexican genre.

About his rapid seismic rise, Peso (born Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija) has said, “I knew this was gonna happen, but I didn’t know at what level and what speed. I knew I was gonna do good in Mexico and the Spanish-speaking countries, but this went worldwide [so fast]. I’m thankful for that.”

The 24-year-old singer-songwriter is currently on a U.S. tour, produced by Live Nation, that kicked off in April and will make stops in Nashville, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Here’s Why Kelly Clarkson Thinks Taylor Swift Is ‘Brilliant’

Back during the 2019 battle over masters between Taylor Swift and Scooter Braun, Kelly Clarkson took to Twitter to suggest that the pop superstar re-record the albums she doesn’t own.

“@taylorswift13 just a thought, U should go in & re-record all the songs that U don’t own the masters on exactly how U did them but put brand new art & some kind of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions,” she wrote at the time, and in a new SiriusXM interview on Thursday (June 23), Clarkson reflected on her four-year-old tweet.

“I think Scooter took offense to it … we ran into each other, and he reached out at the time to my manager,” she told host Andy Cohen. “I was like, ‘It wasn’t anything against him.’ When she came out and said that and I heard about it, I was like, ‘Whatever. Re-record them. Your fans will support you.’ Uh, they did! She has like every top record right now in the charts!”

She added that at the time, she didn’t know much about the situation in which Braun acquired Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Records Label Group and Swift’s catalog for $300 millionBraun later sold Swift’s masters in 2020, prompting Swift to begin the process of re-recording her first six Big Machine albums. “All I heard was, ‘Man, I really want to own.’ […] She writes everything! It’s so important to her. She’s a businesswoman,” Clarkson said. “It felt wrong that she didn’t have the opportunity, right? That’s the thing. If you have the opportunity and you choose to not pay that much money, that’s one thing, but to not have the opportunity to own something that is really important to you — I’m not that artist. I don’t care like what I own. I’m not a businesswoman at all.”

Clarkson concluded by noting that Swift is a “genius,” not only for re-recording her albums but also for setting out on her massive The Eras tour. When asked if she was “thanked” by Swift for her idea, Clarkson replied, “I think she is brilliant. She would’ve come up with that on her own and she maybe already had before I even tweeted it.”

In a note shared to fans the next day, the “Two of Us” singer shared that he’s working to reschedule the canceled show, and that tickets for the original date will still work for the new one. “Sending all my love out to everyone that was affected by the extreme weather at Red Rocks last night,” he wrote in his message. “I hope everyone has made it home safely and anyone injured is on the mend, it was devastating to see so many of you affected.”

The former One Direction member continued, “I want to thank the speed and care of my touring personnel and first responders who worked tirelessly last night to help care for everyone affected in what was such extreme circumstances.

Seven people were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries due to the storm, and a total of 80 to 90 people were treated at the venue for injuries including cuts and broken bones, according to the West Metro Fire Rescue in Lakewood, Colorado.

One attendee took to Twitter to share her “view” from the venue’s bathroom where she was taking shelter, in which the massive chunks of hail are seen flowing into the stalls. “We were so fortune to have been able to squeeze into the bathroom before it got too cramped,” the fan named Jess wrote.

Gorillaz Cancel U.S. Tour: ‘We Are Gutted’

Gorillaz‘s The Getaway 2023 tour will no longer take place, as the the virtual group have canceled the run of shows, the quartet announced Wednesday.

The tour would have seen the band play four dates across the United States in Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago and Boston from Sept. 10 to 19, but on Wednesday, Ticketmaster issued an update to fans who had already purchased tickets that the trek will no longer take place. Kaytranada, Lil Yachty and Remi Wolf were all scheduled to join the band on the tour.

“Due to scheduling conflicts and circumstances beyond our control, the previously announced Gorillaz shows in September have been cancelled,” the ticketing giant wrote in an email to attendees. “Refunds will be issued automatically at your point of purchase and will be processed as quickly as possible, there is nothing further for you to do at this time. Please allow for up to 30 days for the refund to process.”

Gorillaz shared a statement of its own in the email, writing to fans, “We are gutted not to be able to perform for you this year. We were really looking forward to it and we hope to get back to you again as soon as we can. We love our Gorillaz family and we can’t wait to see you again.”

Previously, Gorillaz did back-to-back performances at Coachella in April and embarked on a 2022 World Tour led by Damon Albarn and a 14-piece live band, which featured multiple guest performers.

Louis Tomlinson’s Show Canceled Due to Hail, Orville Peck Calls Off Tour & More | Billboard News

Portugal. The Man frontman John Gourley is Billboard’s new cover star. A freak hailstorm broke out at Louis Tomlinson‘s show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Wednesday night, sending fans ducking for cover. Orville Peck cancels his tour to work on his mental and physical health. And Shawn Mendes shared the stage with Ed Sheeran during his stop in Toronto. And more!

Tetris Kelly:
Dozens of fans are injured at a Louis Tomlinson concert. We catch up with Portugal. The Man in Alaska to talk about their comeback. We’ve got an exclusive look at the movie Joy Ride. Orville Peck postpones his tour for health reasons. And we run down the biggest songs of the summer from 2012. Welcome to Billboard News! I’m Tetris Kelly and it’s Thursday, June 22nd.

We’ve got a new cover star! Portugal. The Man is back and they’re looking a little different these days. We took a trip to Alaska to hear all about their journey.

John Gourley:
Looking back at that stuff, I’m just so gracious of everything that came along with that song. And it was like this really stressful period for the band, just having that crossover success. And I mean, it was legit like all day long.

John Gourley:
You would wake up in the morning, you go to do press, you bounced around, you’d play five soundcheck parties, and they become less of like soundcheck parties and more of just like five extra shows in the day. And it was so fun. I mean, it was so new for us, like we’re just doing this. I didn’t even realize it until the end of it. The last show we played was up here in Alaska, and the last show I just broke down in tears. Emotionally, we took on so much. We had a really great time making music together and then the pandemic. And yeah, there’s just been this moment of searching for identity and I think just priorities shifted. It just became about a family, became more about just reconnecting with each other. We had just found out that Francis has this very rare genetic disease. She’s one of six kids with her specific disease. It’s really intense. I mean, it really like makes you think about how fragile we all are.

RIAA Cracks Down on AI Voice Group on Discord: ‘Undermines The Entire Music Ecosystem’

Lawyers for the RIAA are aiming to shut down a popular Discord server centered on artificial intelligence and voice models, the latest effort by music companies to rein in the disruptive new technology.

In an action filed last week in D.C. federal court, attorneys for RIAA obtained a subpoena demanding that Discord reveal the identities of users on “AI Hub,” a message board with 145,000 members that calls itself “a community dedicated to making AI voices and songs.”

In a letter to Discord presenting the company with the subpoena, the RIAA said those users had “infringed … copyrighted sound recordings” and that the tech company was required to hand over names, physical addresses, payment info, IP addresses and other identifying details.

The group’s lawyers also sent Digital Millennium Copyright Act takedown notices to Discord, first in late May and then again next week. The group demanded that Discord disable access to the server, remove or disable the infringing material, and inform the server’s users “of the illegality of their conduct.”

“This server [is] dedicated to infringing our members’ copyrighted sound recordings by offering, selling, linking to, hosting, streaming, and/or distributing files containing our members’ sound recordings without authorization,” the RIAA’s lawyers wrote in their June letter to Discord, which was obtained by Billboard. “We are asking for your immediate assistance in stopping this unauthorized activity.”

The subpoena against Discord was obtained under the DMCA’s Section 512(h), which enables rights holders like the RIAA’s members to unmask the identities of anonymous online infringers in certain circumstances.

Discord can fight back by seeking to “quash” the subpoena; Twitter won such a challenge last year, when a federal judge ruled that the First Amendment rights of a user trumped the need for an unmasking order. It could also refuse to honor the takedown, but that would put the site itself at risk of litigation.

As of Thursday evening (June 22), the main AI Hub server remained up on Discord; it was unclear if individual content or sub-channels had been removed. A spokesperson for the company did not return a request for comment.

In a statement to Billboard, an RIAA spokesperson confirmed that the group had taken the action against AI Hub. “When those who seek to profit from AI train their systems on unauthorized content, it undermines the entire music ecosystem – harming creators, fans, and responsible developers alike. This action seeks to help ensure that lawless systems that exploit the life’s work of artists without consent cannot and do not become the future of AI.”

The RIAA’s actions are just the latest sign that the explosive growth of AI technologies over the past year has sparked serious concerns in the music industry.

One big fear is that copyrighted songs are being used en masse to “train” AI models, all without any compensation going to the songwriters or artists that created them. In April, Universal Music Group demanded that Spotify and other streaming services prevent AI companies from doing so on their platforms, warning that it “will not hesitate to take steps to protect our rights.”

Another fear is the proliferation of so-called deepfake versions of popular music, like the AI-generated fake Drake and The Weeknd track that went viral in April. That song was quickly pulled down, but its uncanny vocals and mass popularity sparked concerns about future celebrity rip offs.

For RIAA, AI Hub likely triggered both of those worries. The server features numerous “voice models” that mimic the voices of specific real singers, including Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra. And in the wake of the RIAA’s actions, users on the Discord server speculated Thursday that the takedowns were filed because users had disclosed that some of the models had been trained on copyrighted songs.

“We have had certain threats from record labels to takedown models, mainly because some posters decided to share datasets full of copyrighted music publicly,” one AI Hub admin wrote. “If you want to avoid unnecessary takedowns[,] most importantly, do NOT share the full dataset if you have copyrighted material in the dataset. The voice model itself is fine, but don’t share the dataset.”

YOASOBI Provides a Dreamlike Experience During DENKOSEKKA, Its First Arena Tour: Live Report

On June 4, YOASOBI played the last show of its first arena tour, YOASOBI ARENA TOUR 2023 “DENKOSEKKA,” at Saitama Super Arena, Japan.

With 19,000 fans in attendance, this was YOASOBI’s largest-ever solo show — and it was also being broadcast live around the world. YOASOBI’s newest single, “Idol,” has broken countless records in the charts, and is maintaining tremendous momentum, even taking the number one spot on the Billboard’s Global Excl. U.S. chart. The Saitama Super Arena show was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience that power first-hand.

Watching the show, the first things that stood out to me were the bold presence of vocalist ikura and composer Ayase, and their solid performance. YOASOBI is a musical unit that produces music inspired by novels. Their big break came with an animated music video. Partly because they debuted during the pandemic, their first stage performance was an online show. They later began performing at shows and festivals with live audiences, but it wasn’t until this tour that they finally began to have normal shows where audiences shouted or sang along. They’re not a unit forged in the fires of frequent live shows. However, the indelible impression the show left me with was of the physical strength of the duo. The passionate vocals and performance, which the two threw themselves into with every fiber of their being, brought the whole arena together as one. Their show packed a tremendous punch.

At curtain time, laser light danced through the air and a four-on-the-floor beat and electro melody began ringing out through the venue. The set, suspended from the ceiling, rose up, and Ayase, ikura, and their band members appeared, dressed in yellow track suit-like costumes. “It’s time for YOASOBI to start things up!” declared ikura, and they launched into the first song of the night, “The Blessing.” The audience began chanting out the rhythm of the exciting electro number. They followed this up with their hit song “Into the Night.” ikura shouted “Get up and jump around!” and the audience’s energy suddenly reached fever pitch. When Ayase yelled “Let’s make this a night to remember!” and the band began performing “RGB,” the audience swung their towels above their heads. From the very start, the air was filled with excitement.

After some call & response between the band and the audience, YOASOBI shifted into the middle of their show, playing the songs “Seventeen,” “Mister,” “Umi No Manimani,” and “Suki Da” from their Hajimete no EP. Each of these songs was based on a story by a leading Japanese novelist, and the colorful visuals on the massive LED screen behind the band wove the aesthetics of each story.

Ayase then introduced the band — guitarist AssH, bassist Hikaru Yamamoto, keyboardist Zakuro Misohagi, and drummer Honogumo. He reflected on the tour, deep emotion in his voice as he recalled, “We’ve had lots of difficulties and struggles, but looking back, it was all fun. This experience has really been a tremendous support, and I’m truly happy that we’ve been able to make each new day a great one.”

ikura gave a moving speech to the crowd, expressing the joy and gratitude she felt as she realized one of her dreams. She recalled the first time she came to Saitama Super Arena, ten years ago, at the age of 13. She watched one of her very favorite musicians, Taylor Swift, from the very last row of the second floor stands. “I remember being amazed by just how moving music could be. I was moved, and at the same time, I thought about how much I wanted to stand on this same stage — how I wanted it to be my own voice that enveloped the crowd. And today, here I am!” She continued, “I want YOASOBI to be the kind of band that you dream about, and for us to keep putting on shows that are dreams come true for all of you, too!”

In the second half of the show, YOASOBI sang wistful ballads, starting with “Comet” and leading into “If I Could Draw Life.” The pop tune groove of “Haven’t” got the audience swaying and vibing. Then, after a quick introduction of the show’s merch and the staff, which provided a glimpse of the duo’s friendly and approachable personalities, Ayase and ikura performed a run of light, cute, popular songs: “Halzion,” “Haruka,” and “The Swallow.”

The show then headed towards its climax. Over the electro sound effects, ikura yelled out “Everyone, raise your voices and shout it out with me!” and launched into “Monster.” The audience’s fists pumped and their shouts filled the air as bright red lasers flittered across the arena. This was followed by “Blue,” and the whole audience lifted their voices together as the chorus rang out, “See what, see what, covered deep inside.” The show ended with a performance of “Adventure,” a rapturous closer that brought the whole audience together as one.

The audience began chanting for an encore, and Ayase, ikura, and the rest of the band took to the stage once again. The last song they played was “Idol.” During the intro, which had extended for the live set, ikura shouted out “Now let’s give it all we’ve got and dance till we drop!” and filled the arena with feverish excitement through the powerful song, switching between rapping and rapid-fire vocals. As silver confetti flittered through the air, ikura, a huge smile on her face, shouted “We are YOASOBI! Thank you!” took a deep bow, and left the stage.

The show was intense — the kind of show that leaves your heart racing with excitement even after it ends. For each and every one of the 19,000 people in the audience, it must have been like a dream coming true.

On August 5 and 6, YOASOBI will be performing at Head In The Clouds festival in Los Angeles. It is certain to show their unparalleled momentum and their tremendous potential as a live act.

YOASOBI Logs 10th Week Atop Billboard Japan Hot 100

YOASOBI‘s “Idol” continues to blaze the trail as it adds another week to its record-breaking run atop the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart, released June 22.

Scoring its 10th consecutive week at No. 1, the points for “Idol” in streaming, video views, karaoke and radio airplay began increasing again this week after showing a slight downtrend. Dominating those four metrics for the fourth week in a row, total points for the Oshi no Ko opener increased by 1.7 percent to 21,616, which is more than the total from two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, SixTONES’ “Kokkara” debuts at No. 2 on the Japan Hot 100 after hitting No. 1 for physical sales (497,843 copies) and radio. The theme of the drama series Daga, Jonetsu wa aru starring member Shintaro Morimoto and King & Prince’s Kaito Takahashi also performed well in video (No. 3) but couldn’t overtake “Idol” as it continues its domination over the Japan song chart.

BTS’s “Take Two,” which debuted at No. 6 on the Japan Hot 100 last week, slips to No. 8 this week. The track performed favorably, coming in at No. 7 for downloads, No. 8 for streaming, No. 4 for video and No. 7 for radio, but saw a significant decrease in downloads from 30,821 to 6,151 units this week.

The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, audio streams, radio airplay, video views and karaoke data.
