Watch Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice Reign Over ‘Barbie World’ In New Music Video

In tandem with the song’s full release Friday (June 23), New York rappers Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice have also unveiled the official music video for their “Barbie World” collaboration.

Doused in various shades of pink and featuring a litany of ripped Ken-like background dancers, the “Barbie World” music video is the ultimate doll dream. Directed by Hannah Lux Davis, the visual finds Minaj and Spice recreating some scenes from the trailer of the Greta Gerwig-helmed film, striking their best Barbie poses and lording over an extravagant recreation of the Barbie Dreamhouse.

“Barbie World” marks the second collaboration between Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. The two rappers previously joined forces, along with Ice Spice’s go-to collaborator RiotUSA, for “Princess Diana,” a remix of the original track from Ice’s Like EP, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song features a prominent sample of AQUA’s seminal 1997 hit single “Barbie Girl.” The Danish Europop band is also officially credited on the song.

In the months leading up to the official start of the Barbie promotional campaign, there were reports that AQUA’s “Barbie Girl,” which peaked at No. 7 on the Hot 100 back in 1997, would not be used in the film. In 2002, Mattel, the manufacturer behind the iconic doll, lost its lawsuit against MCA Records and everyone involved in the production and marketing of “Barbie Girl.” The Barbie creators alleged that AQUA’s song violated Mattel’s copyright and caused consumers to mistakenly believe that the company backed the song. MCA also sued the brand for defamation. Ultimately, both suits were thrown out and all further appeals were declined.

This week, Young Thug takes care of Business, Peso Pluma steps fully into the spotlight, and Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice reinvent a pop classic. Check out all of this week’s picks below:

Young Thug, Business is Business

More than just serving as Young Thug’s follow-up to 2021’s wide-ranging Punk, Business is Business represents a show of support from the hip-hop community — as the groundbreaking MC remains incarcerated after being arrested as part of a RICO sting last year, rap’s best and brightest stop by the full-length to pay homage, with Metro Boomin executive producing and Drake, Future, 21 Savage and Lil Uzi Vert contributing guest spots. Business is Business may be a symbolic gesture featuring reanimated material more than a bold new creative endeavor, but hearing Thugger’s elastic voice stretched across an impressive new collection of beats still satisfies as a stopgap until he’s home and back in business.

Peso Pluma, Génesis

At 24 years old, Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, better known as Peso Pluma, has spent this year helping to bend the pillars of North American popular music toward his sound, as Mexican music and its decades-old hallmarks have been refurbished for a fresh generation and, from a charts perspective, have exploded well beyond the wildest expectations of the genre’s supporters. Pluma has become the de facto leader of this new school, thanks to smashes like “Ella Baila Sola,” “La Bebe” and “Por las Noches”… and the fact that none of those songs appear on the track list to his rollicking new album Génesis illustrates his confidence that his earthy instrumentation and high, prodding croon will keep spreading beyond a handful of hits.

Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice with Aqua, “Barbie World”

Nicki Minaj has scored some of the biggest hits of her career while sampling classic singles like Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back” and Rick James’ “Super Freak,” so when the leader of the Barbz announced that she had reworked Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” (alongside new BFF Ice Spice) for the upcoming Barbie soundtrack, the pairing made all too much sense. Yet “Barbie World” surprises with its structure: instead of letting their verses dance around Aqua’s iconic hook, Minaj and Ice Spice trade lines relentlessly for under two minutes, a giddy rap assault in which the best lines (“I’m a 10, so I pull in a Ken,” Nicki sneers) need to be run back a few times.

Kim Petras, Feed the Beast

Kim Petras boasts two distinct fan groups as she releases her long-awaited debut album: the day-one diehards who have streamed every mixtape, guest spot and themed EP, and the “Unholy” crowd, who caught wind of the pop star when her chart-topping collaboration with Sam Smith yielded a mainstream breakthrough. Both audiences will love Feed the Beast, a dance-pop opus with plenty of potential hits — the turbo-charged “King of Hearts” is going to highlight plenty of club nights this summer — as well as the type of idiosyncratic fun that Petras has specialized in since 2019’s Clarity, particularly in the sexual liberation of the album’s second half.

Portugal. The Man, Chris Black Changed My Life

The story behind Chris Black Changed My Life is crucial to fully appreciating the return of Portugal. The Man, who scored the type of crossover smash single that most bands can only daydream about with “Feel It Still” in 2017, then proceeded to have their lives upended due to professional false starts and personal trauma. While Chris Black Changed My Life is the definition of a hard-fought album — the title honors a dear friend of band leader John Gourley and his untimely passing — the full-length also isn’t overly heavy, as songs like “Grim Generation,” “Ghost Town” and lead single “Dummy” invite the type of sing-alongs that helped Portugal. The Man break through six years ago.

Bizarrap & Rauw Alejandro, “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 56”

Bizarrap has been on a tear: just three weeks after linking up with Peso Pluma for Volume 55 of his viral YouTube collaboration series, the Argentine producer has recruited Puerto Rican superstar Rauw Alejandro and quickly turned around Volume 56. The magic of the series rests in the way that Bizarrap can contort his musical foundation toward the strengths of his collaborator while also not betraying his tone; “Vol. 56” plays out like a particularly crackling Alejandro summer jam, but Bizarrap’s fingerprints are all over its shape-shifting percussion and breathless sonic flourishes, a master bringing another A-lister into his craft.

Editor’s Pick: Militarie Gun, Life Under the Gun

A string of promising EPs over the past three years suggested that, like Turnstile before them, Los Angeles quintet Militarie Gun had a shot at bringing an accessible brand of hardcore to the masses, especially if their sound could coalesce on a full-length. Life Under the Gun is exactly that album — driving and jaggedly catchy, the collection of 12 songs pummels the listener with chunky riffs and brash hooks, and Ian Shelton knows exactly how to deliver a soaring melody while also sounding like he’s about to swallow the microphone whole.

J Balvin, Quevedo, Omar Courtz & YOVNGCHIMI, “En Alta” (Universal Music Latino/Sueños Globales)

J Balvin made a surprising comeback this week when he uploaded a video to his Instagram drinking his morning coffee and repeating “buenos dias.” In the clip, he hinted at the title of his new single, “En Alta.” It was the first time Balvin appeared after taking a nearly 10-month social media break. For his grand musical return, the Colombian artist reeled in newcomers Quevedo, Omart Courtz and YOVNGCHIMI, further proving that he will always support new talent — as he once did with a then-rising Bad Bunny, Feid, Rosalía, Karol G, Maria Becerra, and more.

Produced by Hear This Music (also featuring Mambo Kingz & DJ Luian), “En Alta” is an infectious electro-trap fusion about manifesting nothing but good vibes and being surrounded by positive-minded people. “We continue at the top/Everyone in the middle, I don’t want fake people/We are better than yesterday, thank God/Today there is a party on the terrace, we are chillin,” goes the chorus. — JESSICA ROIZ

María José Llergo, “Rueda, Rueda” (Sony Music España)

“Rueda, Rueda” is the enchanting new single of Spanish singer María José Llergo, and the lead track of her upcoming album, set to drop this fall. “First preview of the album that is not going to change my life, it is directly giving it to me” she shared on her Instagram. The song starts as an enrapturing flamenco chant, and develops into a flamenco-pop tune, with her voice as the protagonist. Llergo knows how to deliver a powerful interpretation that connects with and captivates the listener. “I don’t even know what day it is/ For me all days are holidays/ I travel the world singing about what I write/ Oslo, Paris, Montreal, and the United Kingdom” she sings at the opening of the track. The video shows a lot of — you guessed it — wheels, and people of all ages in an open field. — LUISA CALLE

Maria Becerra, “Corazón Vacío” (Warner Music Latin)

More so than most other rising Latin female stars, Maria Becerra has eschewed the tropes of sexy vamping and imagery in favor of songs that are commercial, but point to deeper meaning and substance. “Corazón Vacío,” produced by longtime collaborator XRoss, kicks off with a moody, slow intro, with Becerra singing practically a cappella over pads, before the reggaetón beat kicks in almost a full minute later. That Becerra can keep our attention with that ploy is notable, and speaks to her singing and to lyrics that are memorable and well crafted (we love “Yo quería hablar con vos, pero otra voz me dijo que, ‘No te ilusiones más con él.’”) The video, where Becerra plays a single mom raising her daughter after her boyfriend leaves her, is really resonating with fans. — LEILA COBO

Peso Pluma, Génesis (Double P Records/Prajin Parlay)

Peso Pluma’s global takeover has just begun — and, to keep the momentum going, the corridos singer-songwriter has delivered Génesis, his new album, which cements Mexican music’s stronghold. The 14-track set thrives on Peso’s core sound, powered by a trombone and tololoche, and includes previously released songs such as the swaggy “77” featuring Eladio Carrión, “Rosa Pastel” with up-and-comer Jasiel Nuñez and the closing heartbreak anthem “Bye.” Among the new cuts, there’s the provocative “Carnal,” with corridos tumbados pioneer Natanael Cano, plus the blunt, attitude-heavy “Rubicon.”

My personal favorite is “Luna,” a collaboration with another música mexicana powerhouse, Junior H. It’s a gorgeous love song that showcases Peso’s romantic side: “Moon you tell her, that you’re the only one that can see her/ Take care of her, my moon, you’ll always see her/ Tell her that she won’t see me anymore, but that you’ll always be there,” the pair sing over a nostalgic trombone riff. But please also listen to “Lagunas” with Nuñez — while it’s led by masterful requinto lines, it’s a dreamy pop song at its core. — GRISELDA FLORES

Bad Gyal, Young Miko, Tokischa, “Chulo pt.2” (Universal Music Latino/Interscope)

Powered by a hard-hitting reggaetón thump, “Chulo pt.2” sees Spanish artist Bad Gyal pursuing risqué, sex-positive ventures with no lyrical filter. Unlike the solo route of “Chulo,” its second iteration brings Puerto Rican rapper Young Miko and Dominican dembow singer Tokischa along for the ride. “I love how natural this project came to be,” says Bad Gyal in a press release. “Both Tokischa and Young Miko gave this song a new meaning, and transformed it into a very original and perfect continuation, straying away from the typical remix.” Produced by Mag and Mauro, the single witnesses the freaky trio hone their carnal-seeking antics as they gamble with (arguably) bad decisions and a lust for life. — ISABELA RAYGOZA

Marshmello & Tiago PZK, “Como Yo :(” (Joytime Collective/Sony Music Latin)

In only 2:30 minutes, Marshmello and Tiago PZK will capture your attention and leave you wanting more with this dreamy pop song filled with wistful melodies and upbeat drum patterns. Co-written by the American DJ and music producer and the Argentine singer and rapper, “Como Yo :(” finds a lovesick Tiago reminiscing on a past lover, as he croons lyrics like, “No one is going to love you like I loved you/ They may tell you what I told you, but not feel it like I did,” in Spanish. The music video, directed by Justice Silvera, is a captivating dreamscape that shows Tiago singing among clouds in the sky. — SIGAL RATNER-ARIAS

Randy Rainbow Mocks the Absurdity of Trump’s Classified Documents Case With Beatles Parody

Donald Trump is facing a mounting legal crisis, with evidence continuing to pile up around his indictment on 37 felony counts ranging from mishandling classified documents, obstructing justice and more. Randy Rainbow, naturally, is having a field day.

In the comedian’s latest parody video posted Friday (June 23), Rainbow skewers Trump for his legal “strategy” in the face of a historic criminal case against the former president. Starting out his video as he typically does, Rainbow conducts a fake interview with Trump — this time pulling clips from the mogul’s interview with Fox News‘ Bret Baier in which the former Apprentice host all but admitted to obstructing justice.

As Trump flails in the interview, claiming that the pieces of paper he showed to people were not “documents per se,” Rainbow quickly lashes back. “Sweetie, I don’t mean to grab you by the ‘per se,” he quips. “But according to the indictment, there is a recording of you saying, and I quote, ‘Look at me, I have classified documents, these are definitely not declassified, look at me, look at me, I’m a big boy. Daddy, please love me.’”

Just as things were heating up in his faux one-on-one with Trump, Rainbow launches into his latest song, titled “Donald in the John With Boxes.” Styled after The Beatles’ classic hit “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” Rainbow goes full Sgt. Pepper mode, complete with multicolored outfits and spot-on facial hair, to mock the fact that the former president was keeping boxes of classified documents in his bathroom.

“Just within reach of his diapers and Pepto/ Our national secrets and nuclear codes,” Rainbow sings. “Sits on the can thumbing classified records/ Like they’re old golf magazines.”

The new video comes just after Rainbow announced his forthcoming tour, aptly titled Randy Rainbow for President, which will see the comedian bringing his brand of political parodies across the country this fall. Tickets are currently on sale on his website.

Katy Perry Shares Update on Sobriety Pact With Orlando Bloom

Katy Perry shared in March that she and fiancé Orlando Bloom were taking a three-month break from drinking alcohol, but with that period now over, is she still abstaining? The pop star gave an update on Wednesday (June 21) and revealed that she’s going strong — most of the time.

The “Teenage Dream” singer told People that she is “not really drinking” on weeknights, “but on the weekend I’ll indulge a little bit.” The pact was initially a way to support Bloom, noted the singer, who shares a daughter named Daisy with the actor.

“We did this because he’s shooting a movie in London right now that’s taking every ounce of his focus, and so I wanted that opportunity to be supportive,” Perry said. “It’s really hard to do anything — whether that’s doing a cleanse or a reset — unless your partner’s doing it. So, doing it together makes it so much easier.”

“For me, it was an opportunity to reset,” the 38-year-old shared. “We reset after President’s Day, and it was a great opportunity to just let my body bounce back a little bit … I’ve had a pretty good relationship with just finding balance.”

At the end of March, Perry revealed the pact during a cocktail event attended by fellow American Idol judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. “I’ve been sober for five weeks today … I’ve been doing a pact with my partner and I want to quit,” she shared at the time. “I can’t cave. I made a promise. Three months.”

Drinking less alcohol might be slightly easier for Perry, as she has her own line of non-alcoholic aperitifs called De Soi. The pop star also told People that she doesn’t “really identify with any labels as far as sober or whatever,” but “I love to have my reset moments, especially being 38, balancing the intensity of my career and having a toddler who loves to run.”

Kelly Clarkson Sings Karaoke With Stunned Fans at Album Release Event: See the Videos

It’s never surprising to hear one of Kelly Clarkson‘s many hits sung at any given karaoke party — but it is rather rare that Kelly Clarkson herself joins you onstage to sing them.

Dozens of unsuspecting fans’ wildest dreams came true Thursday night (June 22) at Sid Gold’s Request Room in New York City, where the 41-year-old pop star made a surprise karaoke night appearance just ahead of the midnight release of her new album, Chemistry. In one video captured from the event, Clarkson enters the bar as two partygoers belt out the Grammy winner’s early career hit “Behind These Hazel Eyes” and starts singing along from the crowd, causing heads around her to turn in shock.

In another video posted on Instagram by Clarkson, she cheerfully assists a pair of fans in performing her 2004 smash “Since U Been Gone” with a drink in one hand and a microphone in the other. “Karaoke night!!” she simply wrote in her caption.

The talk-show host ended up singing with fans for more than an hour, a rep for Clarkson told Billboard. The fans at the party were invited to celebrate Chemistry‘s release, and though Clarkson wasn’t originally scheduled to attend, she found time in her album promotion schedule to stop in and surprise the group.

Preceded by singles “Me,” “Mine,” “Favorite Kind of High” and more, Chemistry arrived Friday (June 23). “the wait is finally over!” Clarkson wrote on Instagram after the record’s midnight release. “i hope y’all enjoy it! ??☀️”

The project marks Clarkson’s first album since her high-profile divorce from ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, which the singer has been open about inspiring of the songs on Chemistry. “This album is definitely the arc of an entire relationship,” the musician said in March, when she first announced the project. “That whole relationship shouldn’t be brought down to one thing. There’s the good, the bad and the ugly kind of thing going on.”

Camilo Explains How the Voices of ‘La Tribu’ Inspired ‘De Adentro Pa’ Afuera’ Deluxe Album

If there’s one thing that has transformed Camilo’s life—besides fatherhood—it’s touring.

While on the road last year with his De Adentro Pa’ Afuera Tour, the Colombian singer-songwriter experienced a life-changing show that took place in Spain’s Puerta de Alcalá and ultimately led him to release the deluxe edition of his De Adentro Pa’ Afuera album.

“When we did the concert in Spain, we were so focused on the event as such that we weren’t thinking about it being a deluxe part of the album,” Camilo tells Billboard. “It was when we later saw the results with the cameras and the drones that we said, ‘This has to be kept forever, immortalized’. Now that I listen to it [the album], I realize that it would have been very strange if it hadn’t been like that.”

The deluxe album includes six singles that were recorded live at the free street concert in Spain in October of 2022: “KESI”; “Por Primera Vez” with his wife, singer and actress Evaluna; “5:24”; “De Adentro Pa Afuera”; “Tutu”; and “Vida De Rico.” The recordings also feature videos of the “surreal” and “magical” encounter that Camilo had with the nearly 100,000 fans in attendance.

“It was surreal. It was so magical and so cinematic that it couldn’t be something from reality,” he recalls. “It was like impossible, improbable, to achieve a concert like that. Even for a Spanish artist to achieve that is very difficult, so it is privileged, it is immense and impossible to forget.”

But the main reason the dreamlike concert was stapled into an album is because of the Grammy-winning and Latin Grammy-winning artist’s beloved fanbase “La Tribu” (the tribe).

“The voices of the tribu changed and impacted me,” he notes. “It was necessary to listen to these songs with their voices there, hearing people scream with me. I can’t believe how loud they are. It’s incredible how they sing the songs and how their voices sound harder than the speakers outside. Love is very loud and very beautiful.”

De Adentro Pa’ Afuera (Sony Music Latin/Hecho A Mano) navigates from urban pop to banda and cumbia villera, and includes powerful collaborations such as Alejandro Sanz, Camila Cabello, Grupo Firme and Nicki Nicole, to name a few. The set debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard Latin Pop Albums chart in September 2022.

Sony Music Creates New EVP of AI Position, Hires BPI’s Geoff Taylor

Sony Music has created a new position of executive vp of AI, and hired former BPI CEO Geoff Taylor to take up the role, according to an internal memo obtained by Billboard. Taylor, who spent 15 years as chief of the British recorded music trade body, will report to Sony Music Entertainment COO Kevin Kelleher.

In the new role, Taylor will coordinate the major label’s business efforts surrounding artificial intelligence, and coordinate across the global digital business and business and legal affairs division, according to the memo.

The move comes as the music business continues to grapple with the particular challenges that are beginning to arise through the proliferation of artificial intelligence in the digital world, particularly its effect on copyright and ability to be trained on existing musical compositions, among other issues. Battles have begun to pop up around AI-generated music on streaming services, and songs that have been released that mimic existing artists, producers and songwriters without their input or consent, with additional use cases popping up seemingly every day.

The position appears to be the first AI-specific executive-level role introduced by any of the major labels. Check out Kelleher’s memo below.

All,

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has great significance for the future of the music industry and, as a result, more focused attention on it is required.

Accordingly, we are delighted to share that Geoff Taylor will be joining us as our new Executive Vice President, Artificial Intelligence.

Reporting to me and working closely with our Global Digital Business and Business & Legal Affairs divisions, Geoff will align and help coordinate the work of every part of the business that touches AI.

Geoff brings to our company decades of music industry experience. Most recently, from 2007 to 2022 Geoff was the Chief Executive of the BPI, our UK Trade Body for recorded music, where he led the fight against piracy and fraud and advocated for the strategic importance of recorded music to jobs, investment and maintaining the UK’s global competitiveness. Prior to joining the BPI, Geoff was General Counsel and Executive Vice-President at our global recorded music trade body, the IFPI from 2005-2007.

In these roles, Geoff has worked with our company for several years and I am delighted he is joining to help us successfully navigate a key moment in the history of the music industry.

So please join me in welcoming Geoff to Sony Music and feel free to reach out to him with any questions you might have at [Sony Music Entertainment Email Redacted].

The Weeknd, JENNIE & Lily-Rose Depp Share ‘One of Your Girls,’ A Sex Song About Choking

HBO’s new series The Idol might not be a favorite with the critics (which is a kind understatement), but Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye can take comfort in the fact that selections from its soundtrack have become mini events each new music Friday.

Less than a month after “Popular” dropped, the Weeknd’s surprise collab with Queen of Pop Madonna and rage rap pioneer Playboi Carti, we’re getting a new Weeknd collab; this one is with BLACKPINK’s Jennie and actress Lily-Rose Depp, both of whom join Tesfaye on the fame-skewering series.

“One of the Girls” is a down-tempo, emotionally harrowing song about control, fame, desire and Stockholm syndrome (“F–k me up and throw away the key) that will appear on the full soundtrack to the series, which drops June 30. The song directly tips to the show’s plot, which features Tesfaye as a cult leader and Depp as the pop star he has his sights set on. “Hands on my neck while you push it up,” she sings, a tie-in to the shows numerous choking-related sex scenes. “Force me and choke me ‘til I pass out,” the Weeknd adds

“There’s nothing sexy about it,” Tesfaye previously told GQ of the sex-filled show. “With this show, we love to play with the emotions. We’re puppet-mastering your feelings through the show.”

“One of the Girls” marks JENNIE’s first official solo release since 2018, when the BLACKPINK singer released the aptly titled “Solo” (2022 also saw her appear in Grimes’ “Shinigami Eyes” video). Depp, who plays the pop star lead in The Idol, naturally sings throughout the series; so far we’ve heard her on “World Class Sinner” and “Fill the Void” with the Weeknd and Ramsey.
