Jamie Foxx’s Co-Star Porscha Coleman Shares Update on His Recovery: ‘He’s Doing Great & He’ll Be Back!’

After months of confusion, misinformation, and speculation, fans of Jamie Foxx now have another update on the Academy Award winner’s recovery.

On the BET Awards red carpet on Sunday (June 25), Foxx’s Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! co-star Porscha Coleman offered an update on the Grammy-winning multi-hyphenate. “I’ve talked to people very close to Foxx, [he] is doing well,” she said. “I hate that the media outlets kept running with the narrative of what was going on without having the proper information.”

Two months ago (April 12), Corinne Foxx, Foxx’s daughter and Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! executive producer, revealed that her father “experienced a medical complication” and “is already on his way to recovery). In the time since then, Foxx’s representatives have denied unsubstantiated claims that the “Blame It” singer was recuperating from a negative reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Speculation about Foxx’s condition intensified as he and his family maintained their privacy. “One thing about Jamie is that he’s always valued his privacy. If you’ve noticed, Jamie Foxx has always been on the low,” Coleman noted. “Even when it came to dating, Jamie’s always been private, so it never surprised me. Once I heard the news, of course, I reached out, but how Foxx is doing it is how Foxx should be doing it. He’s resting, he’s well. And he’s going to be back. Trust and believe.”

Last week (June 23), Foxx’s most recent film — an action thriller titled God Is A Bullet — received a theatrical release. He is also set to star in and Netflix sci-fi comedy-mystery They Cloned Tyrone! (July 21) and theatrical comedy Strays (Aug. 18). “I know he’s doing great and he’ll be back, trust and believe. He got a lot of projects coming up, a lot of music that I already know he has. So, I’m excited. I love you Foxx!” exclaimed Coleman.

Becky G, Camila Cabello, & More Star in Tainy, Daddy Yankee, Feid & Sech’s ‘La Baby’ Video: Watch

The star-studded music video features Becky G, Camila Cabello, Lali, Elena Rose, Bad Gyal, Evaluna, RaiNao and PaoPao singing along to the verses from Daddy Yankee, Feid and Sech.

In a 90’s-inspired selfie clip, each artist is seen doing their own respective thing, such as getting ready for a night out (Bad Gyal), working out at the gym (Lali), drinking a morning coffee (Evaluna) or enjoying a late-night drive around town (Elena Rose).

“La Baby” sees Tainy opting for infectious reggaeton with hard-hitting drum beats and lyrics meant to empower and motivate the ladies. “That kitty is lost/ She doesn’t have an owner/ An architect/ She’s building her dreams/ Everyone I show her off to/ Says she’s hot like a jalapeño,” he sings on his verse.

“Thank you to these incredible women for being a part of it,” Tainy expressed on his Instagram account.

“La Baby” is part of Tainy’s debut solo studio album DATA, slated for a June 29 release. The release also comes on the heels of Tainy unveiling its stacked tracklist including Bad Bunny, Rauw Alejandro, Myke Towers, J Balvin, Arcangel, Kany Garcia, Young Miko and many more.

“[DATA] is a representation of who I am as a person, and as a fan of music,” Tainy previously told Billboard Español. “To be able to have my own album is so special. I’m putting my everything into this, all the knowledge I’ve acquired since I started working with the people I admire.”

Regional Mexican Music Sounds & Feels Nothing Like Reggaetón — And That’s Partly Why It’s Dominating in 2023

In late 2022, Latin urban music appeared to be an indomitable force after nearly a decade of chart supremacy. Bad Bunny, Billboard‘s Artist of the year, topped both Latin charts and global charts — and on top of that, he was the highest-grossing touring artist of 2022. Other urban-leaning global hits were churned out at lightning speed: Karol G and Becky G’s “Mamii”; Rauw Alejandro and Chencho Corleone’s “Desesperados.” Bizarrap’s music sessions became fabled.

Six months later, the pendulum has swung in a different direction. Sharply. This week, 13 of the 17 Spanish-language tracks on the Billboard Hot 100 are regional Mexican tracks, or “música Mexicana,” as it’s called by some. They include the highest-charting Latin track on the chart, Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola,” which ranks at No. 10 for its second consecutive week after peaking at No. 4.

Of those 13 tracks, one features Bad Bunny — who, smartly recognizing the new wave, recorded “unx100to” with Grupo Frontera. Even Bizarrap’s new music session, “Vol. 55,” features Peso Pluma, the hottest regional Mexican act of the moment and only the second Mexican artist to be featured in a session (the first, Sno Tha Product, is an urban act).

It all couldn’t sound more different to reggaetón, which not only explains part of the appeal — but also signals that Latin listeners may be suffering from reggaetón and urban music fatigue, and ready to discover new sounds. Led by acts like Peso Pluma, Eslabón Armado, Fuerza Regida and Luis R. Conríquez, today’s Mexican music is earthy, guitar- and brass-based and devoid of Auto-Tune and drum machines, the hallmarks of reggaetón for over a decade. Mexican music shows, like those by the likes of Peso Pluma, Natanael Cano, Carín León, Fuerza Regida and Conríquez, are live music spectacles, with full bands — whether big or small — playing live onstage, rather than using tracks and pads.

While reggaetón acts often cite the cost of their dancers and pyro as a primary budgetary concern, regional Mexican acts largely eschew those frills in favor of sheer musical manpower. Mexican music shows rarely incorporate dancers; the live music is meant to be the center of attention and it’s also the heart of the genre, for artists young and old. How could an act like Yahrtiza y su Esencia, for example, possibly exist without those two dueling guitars? How could Pepe Aguilar sing without his mariachi? When one sees Peso Pluma performing with that fierce, seven-piece band behind him, the thought of replacing them with dancers feels anathema to the spirit of his performance; the mere choice of a tuba line or a guitar is deliberate and congruent with the style of each particular song, whether it be a corrido or a sierreño.

While many reggaetón acts hone their chops in front of a computer in the recording studio, Mexican acts do so by playing together in their garages and learning from each other, much like punk and rock bands always did. That organic feel and camaraderie translates into the recordings and onto the stage and fans are devouring it.

And then, there’s the lyrics: Mexican music remains, in essence, focused on romance and story-telling. Yes, narcocorridos — the tales of drug users, drug lords and their exploits — abound, and the lyrics, full of bravado and braggadocio, often glorify the subject matter, something that’s far less common in reggaetón (and that I’m not a fan of). On the other hand, Mexican music largely avoids the blatant misogyny of reggaetón and the genre’s continued obsession with assessing the size and heft of women’s breasts and butts and their levels of arousal. There is sexual innuendo — these are no choirboys either –but there is barely any sexual explicitness, either in the music or in the visuals, where women are depicted as sexy temptresses, but rarely as purely sexual objects.

The new Mexican music does take many of its aesthetic cues from reggaetón and urban music: The clothes, the accessories, the jewelry, the swagger. This is, after all, youth pop culture. Beyond that creative aspect, regional Mexican music has also learned from reggaetón as an industry. The genre, which was once notoriously averse to collaborations, now boasts them in spades, a factor that’s been key to its rise in popularity — as Peso Pluma openly said during his South Florida show on Saturday.

But the roots of the music have remained solid, and it’s clearly having an impact outside the Mexican audience. As Mike Tyson put it as he danced to the strains of Peso Pluma’s guitar accompaniment on a social media video touting the singer’s new album, Génesis: “This is my s–t.”

We’re with you, Mike.

‘Stranger Things’ Star Noah Schnapp Celebrates His ‘First Pride’ Since Coming Out

The only thing “Upside Down” in Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp‘s latest Instagram post is his frown.

On Sunday (June 25), Schnapp shared a series of pics on social media from New York City’s Pride festivities, where the actor could be seen joining in the fun. Writing simply in his caption “First pride❤️,” Schnapp pointed out that this year marked his first Pride since coming out as gay January.

In the photos, Schnapp is dancing in the fountain at New York’s Washington Square Park, as well as hanging out with his mom and splashing around at a rooftop pool party. Throughout all the photos, the actor is sporting some rainbow-colored sweatbands, as well as a black tank top with “Straight Outta the Closet” written in rainbow letters.

The 18-year-old actor officially came out via TikTok earlier this year when he posted a short video of himself with a caption casually saying, “When I finally told my friends and family that I was gay after being scared in the closet for 18 years, and all they said was ‘we know.’” In the clip, Schnapp lip-synched to a popular sound that stated, “You know what it never was? That serious.”

Schnapp also gave a shout-out to his Stranger Things character in an additional caption, saying, “I guess I’m more similar to Will than I thought,” referencing a scene in the show’s fourth season where Will Byers seemingly admits to being in love with his best friend, Mike Wheeler (played by Finn Wolfhard).

Taylor Swift Signed Guitar Sells For $120k at Auction Benefitting Kids With Cancer

Taylor Swift‘s signature goes a long way, especially if it’s for a good cause.

On Monday (June 26), Toby Keith and Friends announced the top earning items from its 2023 OK Kids Korral auction, which benefits children battling cancer and their families. And while trips to Europe, one-on-one time with Keith himself and autographs from other celebrities definitely pulled in some big bucks, it was a guitar signed by the “Anti-Hero” pop star that blew all the other items out of the water at the event earlier this month.

According to a release, the Swift-signed instrument went for a whopping $120 thousand, bringing the charity’s total event earnings up to a record $1.8 million. Other top earners included a fishing trip and a personal dinner with Toby Keith ($80,000 and $70,000, respectively), a guitar donated by Country Countdown USA‘s Lon Helton ($44,000) and autographs from Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood, Kane Brown, Parker McCollum, Cole Swindell, Jordan Davis, Brantley Gilbert, Russell Dickerson, Brett Young, Ingrid Andress, Maren Morris, Luke Bryan and Jelly Roll.

Other auction items included memorabilia from NFL quarterback Joe Burrow, NBA star Steph Curry and golf icon Tiger Woods, as well as donations from Ashley Furniture, Crew’s Cottage Carlton Landing, The Joinery, Tim Kenney, Travis McIntyre, Red Fork Distillery, Kennel & Crate, Ryan Cunningham, South OKC Ace Hardware and LOREC Ranch Home Furnishings.

Established in 2006, The Toby Keith Foundation raises funds and provides housing for Oklahoma pediatric cancer patients. In 2014, they constructed the OK Kids Korral, a site where families can stay in comfort as their kids undergo treatment.

“Next year, it’ll be the 10th year for OK Kids Korral, 20th year of my foundation party,” Keith told The Oklahoman at this year’s event. “We’re gonna celebrate a 10 and a 20, and we’re gonna blow it out. It’s amazing how much support we get. But it takes that kind of support to handle 300 families a year.”

Eslabon Armado & Peso Pluma, YOASOBI Top Billboard Global Charts

Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” rebounds to No. 1, from No. 2, on the Billboard Global 200 chart (dated July 1). It rules for a sixth total week, having become the list’s first leader for the regional Mexican genre.

Meanwhile, YOASOBI’s “Idol” returns to No. 1, from No. 2, on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart. The song, originally sung in Japanese, first led three weeks earlier following the release of its English-language version; it became the first song originally performed in Japanese to top the tally.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, which started in September 2020, rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

‘Ella Baila Sola’ Extends Global 200 Reign

Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” rises to No. 1, from No. 2, on the Billboard Global 200. It rules for a sixth total week, having become the ranking’s first leader for the regional Mexican genre. It drew 58.2 million streams (down 10%) and sold 2,000 (down 6%) worldwide June 16-22.

Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma’s “La Bebe” bumps 3-2 on the Global 200, revisiting its best rank; Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” lifts 4-3, after 12 weeks at No. 1 starting in January; Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” climbs 9-4, after reaching No. 3 in January; and Fifty Fifty’s “Cupid” shoots 7-5, after it hit No. 2.

(After it launched at No. 1 on the Global 200 a week earlier, BTS’ “Take Two” falls to No. 27.)

‘Idol’ Back Atop Global Excl. U.S.

YOASOBI’s “Idol” pushes 2-1 for a second week atop the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart, with 40.1 million streams (down 3%) and 18,000 sold (down 16%) outside the U.S. June 16-22. The song, originally sung in Japanese, hit No. 1 three weeks earlier following the release of its English-language version; given its initial version, it became the first song originally performed in Japanese to have topped the chart.

Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma’s “La Bebe” ascends 3-2 on Global Excl. U.S., adding a fifth week at its highpoint; Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” rises 4-3, following 13 weeks at No. 1 (as it tied Harry Styles’ “As It Was” for the chart’s longest rule); Fifty Fifty’s “Cupid” flies 5-4, after two weeks on top starting in May; and Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola” elevates 7-5, after reaching No. 2.

(A week after premiering at No. 1 on Global Excl. U.S., BTS’ “Take Two” recedes to No. 15.)

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated July 1, 2023) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow (June 27). Watch the 2023 BET Awards Performances

R&B and hip-hop’s biggest and brightest stars — both new and old — came together on Sunday night (June 25) for the 2023 BET Awards, held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. In addition to honoring multiple greats and celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, the stars took to the stage for larger-than-life performances.

Ice Spice made her first-ever performance at the BET Awards — after receiving a shout-out from Lil Uzi Vert while he took the stage for “Spin Again” — and took the audience back to the basketball courts and corner stores of New York City. During her set, she gave a rousing performance of her breakthrough hit “Munch (Feelin’ U),” her Hot Rap Songs No. 1 track “Princess Diana” and Like…? single “In Ha Mood” with the assistance of ball players and backup dancers.

Latto, who took home the best female hip-hop artist award during the telecast, lit up the stage with “Put It On Da Floor.” The rapper — who recently peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 remix of “Put It On Da Floor Again” featuring Cardi B — started off the performance with as a janitor at a supermarket, but her backup dancers ripped off her outfit to reveal a glitzy bustier that read “brand new,” referencing the song’s viral lyric.

Lil Uzi Vert kicked off the evening, opening the show with “I Just Wanna Rock.” Other artists who performed include Offset and Quavo of Migos, who paid tribute to Takeoff; Patti LaBelle honoring Tina Turner; Swizz Beatz, Coi Leray and more celebrating Lifetime Achievement honoree Busta Rhymes; E-40, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Ja Rule and others marking 50 years of hip-hop; and more.
