Jelly Roll Tops Country Airplay Chart: ‘’Need a Favor’ Has Absolutely Changed My Life’

Jelly Roll scores his second consecutive and total No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart with “Need a Favor.” The song ascends to the top of the ranking dated Aug. 12 with a 2% increase to 32.9 million audience impressions July 28-Aug. 3, according to Luminate.

The 38-year-old, who grew up (as Jason Bradley DeFord) in the Nashville suburb of Antioch, Tenn., co-penned “Need a Favor” with brothers Joe and Rob Ragosta and Austin Nivarel.

The song is the lead single from Jelly Roll’s LP Whitsitt Chapel, which arrived at its No. 2 best on Top Country Albums in June. It follows his first Country Airplay No. 1, “Son of a Sinner,” which led for a week in January.

“A second No. 1 at country radio is something I wouldn’t have even allowed myself to dream about,” Jelly Roll tells Billboard. “‘Need a Favor’ has absolutely changed my life. It’s been incredible to watch the fan reaction and see what’s happening out there on the road. Thank you to everyone who has continued to believe in this song, and to country radio for supporting therapeutic music. I’ve seen firsthand the impact the music continues to have with people across the country.”

“Need a Favor” is also crossing over, as it rises 26-22 on the Adult Pop Airplay chart.

On the most recently published streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart (dated Aug. 5), “Need a Favor” held at its  No. 4 high. It drew 11.3 million official U.S. streams and sold 6,000 downloads July 21-27.

Meanwhile, Jelly Roll ends a three-month lock on the top spot on Country Airplay by Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen. “Need a Favor” dethrones Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” which dominated for five weeks starting July 8. Before that, Wallen’s “Last Night” reigned for eight frames beginning May 13.

5 Things We Learned About Anitta While She Ate Spicy Wings on ‘Hot Ones’

Anitta is the latest act to take on the challenge of eating spicy wings in a new episode of Hot Ones.

“I think it’s going to be a nightmare,” she told host Sean Evans before eating the chicken wings. She joked about her family being concerned about her shooting the show and how her publicist encouraged her to take on the challenge because it was an “amazing” opportunity.

During the nearly 30-minute episode, the Brazilian not only tried out various hot sauces including Classic Chili Maple, Zesty Lemon Pepper and the Spice Shark, to name a few, but she also talked about the roots of Brazilian funk music, her upcoming projects and more.

Most notably, Anitta was as unfiltered as ever, sharing crazy anecdotes about her personal life and career.  Below, check out five fun facts we learned watching Anitta’s “Hot Ones” episode:

1. Discovering Reggaeton Music: While trying out the Thai Green Curry Hot Sauce, the artist shared a story about discovering reggaeton music during one of her first business trips to Mexico. She said she first went to a “fancy” nightclub and was underwhelmed. Then, she hopped in a taxi and asked to be taken to a regular club in a barrio. She recalls having the best time ever and Shazamming all the reggaeton songs that caught her attention to later go back to the hotel and DM the artists for potential collaborations.

2. No Condiments, Please: “I never put lemon on my food,” the singer said ahead of trying out the Zesty Lemon Pepper Hot Sauce. “This is the easiest one so far. I feel so relaxed now.” While eating the chicken wing, she talked about going on a date with a chef to his restaurant and faking to like the food. She said all the dishes had black pepper but that she doesn’t eat black pepper because “it causes hemorrhoids.”

3. Love-Making Music: Things got spicier (no pun intended) when she tried the Chile Lengua de Fuego sauce. “I love songs to make love to. I always make songs to twerk,” she admitted. “I think a good song to have sex needs to have that movement that you feel you can go with it and ride to it. I took a course of tantric massage and it needs to match that vibe — it needs to be sensitive, not that strong. It was good,” she elaborated.

4. Embarrassing Work Moment: As the challenge grew hotter, Anitta became more revealing. During Los Calientes Rojos Hot Sauce, she talked about clogging the toilet at a fancy hotel where she was having a work meeting. “Everyone was knocking on the door and the toilet wouldn’t flush. The water spilled, I was desperate. I was there for 40-mins,” she laughed.

5. She Doesn’t Google Herself: While eating the extra hot and spicy Jalapeño Chico sauce, Anitta said she doesn’t care about reading news about herself or even googling her name. “I used to be on top of my sh** every single day—Do people love me? Do they hate me? Now I don’t give a sh** because people are crazy. I decided to let it go.”

Influencer Kai Cenat Detained By NYPD After Union Square PS5 Giveaway Sparks Riot, X Users React

Kai Cenat, an influencer of note, is in a world of trouble. After urging his followers to meet up with him on Friday afternoon (August 4) in New York City’s Union Square for a giveaway, the turnout was so massive that riots broke out, and Cenat ended up being allegedly taken into custody by the NYPD.

Social media is dishing out videos of the scene at Union Square that makes the infamous Air Jordan 11 Concord and Galaxy Foampostite drops look like a backyard kickback. Thousands of teens and young adults, and surely some older hypebeasts, made it down to 14th Street in hopes of scoring the PS5’s, PC’s and gift cards that Cenat promised them via his stream. This was no passive suggestion since the 21-year-old recently made history as the most popular streamer on Twitch (he also has a cool 6 million followers on Instagram). And clearly from the turnout, when he says move, a lot of people take heed.

But the problem is that Union Square, and the NYPD initially on hand, was not ready for the massive influx of people. According to NYPD, they got wind of the growing crowd around 1:30pm and noted that Kai Cenat’s post started going viral around 3pm. At around 4pm, NYPD urged people not to come down to Union Square since ish was going left.

The influx of people in the park and surrounding street got out of control the NYPD alleges that numerous officers were attacked (apparently, the kids on hand were fighting and hurling object at each other, and they then turned on the badges) and that they declared the gathering an “unlawful assembly.” The authorities claim that despite warning the crowd to leave, after not taking heed they started arresting people to clear out the park.

In NYPD’s presser, a spokesman said they helped remove Kai Cenat from Union Square but there is no confirmation that he was actually detained or arrested. There is also speculation that he may be charged with inciting a riot or a similar charge. FOX 5 News reports that Cenat is in custody and ther is footage of him being escorted by cops.

We’re going to go ahead and guess Kai Cenat did not have enough PS5’s for everyone.

20 Top Male-Female Country Duets

In recent years, duets have made a strong showing on Billboard’s country charts–and in particular, male-female duets have had a moment, whether that be both vocalists fully trading off verses, or one vocalist only contributing harmonies.

Chart-toppers over the past three years have included the Dustin Lynch and MacKenzie Porter duet “Thinking ‘Bout You,” the Jason Aldean/Carrie Underwood collab “If I Didn’t Love You,” Kane and Katelyn Brown’s “Thank God,” Kelsea Ballerini with Kenny Chesney on “Half of My Hometown,” and Cole Swindell and Lainey Wilson’s “Never Say Never,” to name a few.

Currently, the Justin Moore-Priscilla Block song “You, Me & Whiskey” is in the top 5 of the Billboard Country Airplay chart (dated Aug. 5, 2023); also on the chart is the new Carly Pearce track “We Don’t Fight Anymore,” featuring vocals from Chris Stapleton and the Jelly Roll/Wilson collab “Save Me.”

Perhaps more than any other genre, duets have a deep, storied history within the canon of country music classics, with several male-female artist pairings crafting entire albums’ worth of duets.

George Jones and Tammy Wynette (who were married from 1969-1975) crafted nine studio albums as a vocal duo, while Jones also earned hit duets with Melba Montgomery and Margie Singleton. Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty made 10 studio albums together, while Bill Anderson created albums of duets with Mary Lou Turner and Jan Howard.

In 1984, Jones issued the album Ladies’ Choice, a collection of duets with female vocalists. In 2013, Willie Nelson released a similar album of all-female duet partners with To All the Girls…, while Texas artist Aaron Watson is working on Cover Girl, a collection of songs featuring women collaborators. In 2008 and 2009, CMT even hosted the competition show Can You Duet, which brought the duo Steel Magnolia into the spotlight.

Here, we look at some of country music’s top male-female duets over the years. These picks range from 1960s classics to 21st century hits, including everything from romance-charged, loved up ballads, to humorous takes on long-term relationships and songs that encompass the emotional weight of love gone wrong.

Have you ever wanted to dance more? Ciara grabs Chris Brown for “How We Roll.”

Ciara:
On this record, “How We Roll” it is a great example is that feel good r&b/dance, you know, rhythmic, just like melodic energy that you can play at a house party, and we set the house party off, right. And then of course, Breezy, and I come in together. This has been something that we wanted to do for a long time. It was, I would say, an artist’s dream come true for the both of us. And our fans have told us that they wanted us for a long time so we’re like, “we got to make this happen in the moment.” And this song couldn’t be any better.

3 Takeaways About Music Streaming From Recent Earnings Reports

Two weeks into earnings reports for the second quarter of 2023, the music streaming business is showing that subscriptions — not advertising — are the dependable driving force behind the industry’s growth.

Subscriptions — which accounted for 65% of the U.S. recorded music business in 2022, up from 63% in 2021, according to the RIAA — aren’t affected by economic forces that influence how brands spend their advertising dollars. Consumers continue to pay monthly or annual fees for Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Deezer and other offerings. Even faced with higher prices (see “pricing power” below), more people are opting for subscription services.

More information will be gleaned in the coming weeks from earnings results from Warner Music Group (Aug. 8), HYBE (Aug. 8), Sony Music Entertainment (Aug. 9), Tencent Music Entertainment (Aug. 15), Cloud Music (Aug. 24) and Anghami (no date set).

Based on earnings by Universal Music Group, Spotify, Deezer, Believe and Reservoir Media, here are three takeaways from reported results through Aug 4.

The subscription market is holding up well. Spotify beat expectations for both monthly active users (MAUs) and subscribers, “aided by improved retention and marketing efficiencies,” the company explained in its July 25 shareholder presentation. Spotify’s premium subscribers grew 17% year-over-year to 220 million, beating its guidance of 217 million. Spotify’s MAUs increased 27% year-over-year to 551 million compared to guidance of 530 million. Universal Music Group attributed subscription growth in its recorded music segment — 13% in the second quarter and 11.6% in the first half of the year — to “broad-based growth in subscribers across all major global platform partners.” Reservoir Media CEO Golnar Khosrowshahi cited Spotify’s “higher than expected subscriber numbers” in the company’s Aug. 2 earnings call and said its strong quarterly results “reflect increasing demand trends for streaming music globally.” Not all subscription services made gains, though. Deezer lost 100,000 subscribers from June 30, 2022, to June 30, 2023, and Pandora ended the quarter with 6.2 million subscribers, down 100,000 from 6.3 million a year earlier.

Services have pricing power. Spotify raised its individual subscription plan in the U.S. on July 24 to great fanfare. After all, the price had gone unchanged since the service launched in the United States in 2011, although the family plan price increased by $2 per month in 2021. Spotify is relatively late to the game, though. Deezer raised its price from 9.99 euros to 10.99 euros in January 2022 — a major factor in the company’s direct subscriber average revenue per user climbing 4.9% year over year. Apple Music and Amazon Music both raised their prices last year as well. And according to Deezer CEO Jeronimo Folgueira, the increase had “pretty much no impact on churn” — the number of subscribers who leave a service over a period — and “clearly demonstrated that music is highly undervalued, and that platforms like us have more pricing power than initially anticipated.” That said, Folgueira stated that Deezer’s guidance for full-year revenue growth does not include another price increase later in the year.

The advertising market continues to have challenges. At Spotify, music advertising revenue grew in the “mid-single digits” year-over-year, lower than the 12% (15% at constant currency) growth in total ad-supported revenue. That implies advertising revenue from podcasts, which was up 30% year-over-year, contributed to most of the growth. Spotify also noted “softer pricing due to the macroeconomic environment” that offset double-digit gains in impressions. Universal Music Group’s ad-supported streaming revenues were up 5% in the second quarter and 2% in the first half of the year. UMG’s CFO Boyd Muir said “it’s too early to call a positive turnaround in the market.” Believe is “still impacted by the weak ad-supported monetization,” said CFO/chief strategy officer Xavier Dumont. The advertising malaise extends to broadcast radio, too. Weak national advertising “remained the main factor driving a decline in total revenue,” Frank Lopez-Balboa, Cumulus executive vp/treasurer/CFO, said in the company’s July 28 earnings call. National brands appear likely to increase ad spending in the second half of the year, however, according to B Riley Securities analyst Daniel Day.

Veronica Correia, Drake Fan With 36G Bra, Talks Viral Moment & More

HipHopWired Featured Video

Veronica Correia

Veronica Correia was just like any other Drake fan during the weekend that the Canadian star was in New York for a pair of shows at the Barclays for his “It’s All A Blur” tour. However, the Rhode Island native upped the ante by tossing her 36G bra onstage and ended up having not only a viral moment but a private one with Drizzy himself.

Veronica Correia, who owns a coffee shop in Cumberland, R.I., was a guest on the Club Ambition and the interview went swiftly into the moment when she decided to toss her bra onstage and the rest is pretty much history.

As most have noted, Drake did ask to meet the mystery woman and eventually invited Correia backstage. She also says that the two have exchanged DM messages but it was just general back and forth and nothing that would be deemed as crossing the line.

Correia then explained that Playboy reached out to her after she revealed herself on social media to do a photoshoot and that too has made it to the masses.

As a businesswoman, Correia is looking to leverage the moment back toward her business. In a TMZ interview, Correia shared with the outlet that she’ll call the new creation the Drizzy Drizzle or the 36G.

Friday Dance Music Guide: The Best New Tracks From Nia Archives, David Guetta with Bebe Rexha & More

And new music? We’ve got loads of it. Here are the best new dance tracks of the week.

Nia Archives, “Bad Gyalz”

The Label: HIJINXX/Island Release

The Spiel: The U.K. jungle producer’s last few months have included opening for Beyoncé on the London stop of her Renaissance tour, a Coachella debut and very buzzy shows at Glastonbury and Primavera. Archives keeps this big time momentum going with her latest, “Bad Gyalz,” a cool, catchy ode to the junglist ladies turning out for her shows, which continue through the summer and fall with dates throughout Europe and Asia.

The Artist Says: “I was on ma way to the studio with Clipz listening to Ranking Ann who is one of my fave MCs — period. And then I was just thinking about tha fact that like, whenever I go to one of my shows, it’s 85% women ages 18 -25 which is so amazing! And they are all baddies, absolute junglists. So I wanted to make a song that represents that and tha women that come to ma raves. And that’s how ‘Bad Gyalz’ was born!”

The Vibe: Blissfully sweaty on a packed dancefloor with all your fellow gyalz.

David Guetta & Bebe Rexha, “One In a Million”

The Label: Warner Records

The Spiel: As Guetta and Rexha continue their major Hot Dance/Electronic Songs hot streak with “Good (I’m Blue)” — which is currently sitting at No. 1 in its 48th week on the chart — the pair double down on their collaborative magic with “One In a Million.” As Guetta layers up characteristically peppy piano stabs Rexha declares, “I can’t believe we’re both alive at the same time” in her signature chromatic purr, altogether creating the euphoric, unabashedly saccharine dance vibes that both are so skilled at, and are especially good at together.

The Vibe: Screaming along in the car, certain you sound excellent.

Grabbitz & bbno$, “Ticking Away”

The Label: Riot Games

The Spiel: A leader in the headbanging space where electronic music meets rock, Grabbitz returns with another banger in that realm, “TICKING AWAY.” A collaboration with rapper bbno$, the propulsive, deliciously heavy song is the official anthem for the VALORANT Champions Tour, for which the Riot Games’ brand will host performances and activations around Los Angeles (including an event with Brownies & Lemonade on Aug. 23), leading up to the VALORANT Champions Finals on Aug. 26 where Grabbitz and bbno$ will perform the song live for the first time.

The Artist Says: “It’s been an honor to work with VALORANT for three years in a row now,” says Grabbitz. “To see the impact the songs have had on the community and the players has been astonishing.”

The Vibe: Riding the rail (of your favorite first-person tactical hero shooter game.)

Spencer Brown, Wilt Claybourne & Ladysmith Black Mambazo, “Awu Wemadoda”

The Label: diviine

The Spiel: Spencer Brown comes hot out the gates with “Awu Wemadoda,” the lead single from his third studio album Equanimity, set for release this fall. A collaboration with the legendary South African choral outfit Ladysmith Black Mambazo and producer Wilt Claybourne, the song is a beauty — breezy, soothing, uplifting and the very essence of the title of the album from whence it comes.

The Artist Says: “Every day, I saw a rapid-fire stream of contradictions: sugar-coated highlight reels balanced by extremism and negativity from the news, designed to game our emotions for attention,” Brown says of life during the pandemic. “After enough nights driven by pain and uncertainty, I realized that all I can control is how I let external stimuli affect my being. At first, I tried to eliminate the things causing my day to worsen; then, I realized I had to be OK with them. I had to accept difficulties and let them pass through me. During this period, a friend introduced me to the concept of equanimity, describing it as “calmness and composure, especially in a difficult situation.” This was the exact skill I had unknowingly been trying to find. But like a muscle, it takes time to engrain deep strength in the core. In reality, peace exists around us if we can stay unaffected by the noise. Written between 2019 and 2023, Equanimity describes how I learned to be OK when external stimuli are out of my control. All we can do is work on how we react to the world around us.”

The Vibe: Calmness, composure, cathartic dancing.

Swedish House Mafia, “Ray Of Solar”

The Label: Republic Records

The Spiel: The Swedes swing for the fences on their latest single “Ray Of Solar.” Built around a sort of spooky, crystalline vocal from singer Tove Burman, the production ramps up quickly and heavily with a sudden wave of piano stabs and a stuttering synth hitting peak time mode around the 1:30-minute mark. The song follows “See The Light,” with the pair of tracks expected to serve as the two lead singles for a new upcoming SHM studio album.

The Artists Say: “Once we recorded these vocals we really got transcended to space,” the trio say in a joint statement. “We listened to it on repeat all night and imagined floating in space. This is the summer record for us and even though we’ve heard it a million times and still feel the power of it, it’s a really special one, the unique vocal with our style of writing melodies makes it special! Doing this together with Tove was incredible as we really felt we gave it a true Nordic sonic landscape. We love every second of it and can’t wait for the world to hear it!”

The Vibe: Sonic strobe light.

Latin Remix of the Week: DENNIS, Karol G and Maluma’s ‘Tá OK’ feat. MC Kevin o Chris

Brazilian and Colombian rhythms and cultures collide in this insatiable reggaetón and funk carioca remix

During spring 2023, Rio de Janeiro funk singer DENNIS, alongside MC Kevin o Chris, dropped their infectious club banger “Tá OK,” a song that boasts a carefree spirit made for the dancefloor. Today — three months and 180 million streams later — they enlist Colombian superstars Karol G and Maluma for an equally irresistible remix.

Produced by DENNIS himself (with co-writes from all the credited artists and Sky Rompiendo and MC Cabo), the “Tá OK” remix draws a connection between the funk carioca of Duque de Caxias, Brazil and the arresting reggaetón rhythms of Medellín, Colombian — styles from the two origin cities of the artists.

“Now as the song ‘Tá OK’ hits the global charts, I thought, ‘Man, I think it’s time, I’ll call Maluma to do the remix with me’. It worked out super well,” DENNIS said in a press release. “He loved it, he sent me his voice quickly, and the music was ready in days. We had Karol G participate in it. I’m a superfan of hers, and we made it possible for them to feature in the music video. It is a great achievement and victory for me as an artist and for my career. I am so happy and fulfilled with this release.”

The music video, directed by Phill Mendonça, takes cues from the 2000s Rio funk aesthetic; it was filmed in Brussels, Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro. The song is released via Sony Music Entertainment Brasil / 5020 Records.
