Morgan Wallen’s ‘Last Night’ Could Make Hot 100 History – What Songs May Stand in His Way?

The Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week (for the upcoming charts dated Aug. 19), Morgan Wallen is four weeks from making Billboard Hot 100 history – but may not get there, if Luke Combs, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo or other rising hitmakers have anything to say about it.

Morgan Wallen, “Last Night” (Big Loud/Mercury/Republic): Wallen’s first Hot 100 No. 1 – and a rare country No. 1 with no co-lead artists or obvious pop crossover attempt (though it has still become a top five hit at pop and adult radio) – has slowly but surely elbowed its way into the Billboard record books. With its 15th week at No. 1 (on the Hot 100 dated Aug. 12), “Last Night” ties Harry Styles’ “As It Was” (2022) for both the longest-leading No. 1 of the 2020s, and the longest in the Hot 100’s now-65-year history from an unaccompanied artist.

Next in its sights: 16 weeks and a tie for the second-longest run atop the Hot 100, alongside Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” (1995-96) and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Justin Bieber-featuring “Despacito” (2017). After that, only one song stands between it and all-time Hot 100 No. 1 supremacy: Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, which held on top for a record-breaking 19 weeks in 2019.

Unlike “Old Town Road,” which Lil Nas X worked tirelessly to push to No. 1 and keep there – with a succession of music videos, remixes, high-profile live performances and social media memes – Wallen has leaned almost all the way back for “Last Night,” doing remarkably little public promotion outside of the One Night at a Time World Tour that he’s been on since March. Rather, its reign has been more reminiscent of Styles’ 2022 run at No. 1, where the song’s performance simply held across all categories (streams, sales and radio airplay) both strong enough and long enough to essentially serve as the default Hot 100-topper anytime there wasn’t a major new release.

But how long and how strong is it still holding after 15 weeks at No. 1 (and 27 weeks total on the chart)? There are finally real signs of slippage, as the song falls on each of the Streaming Songs (from No. 1 to No. 3), Digital Song Sales (6-7) and Radio Songs (2-4) charts this week. The door is creaking open, but another song will still have to charge through – and as of this week, “Last Night” remains the only hit in the top 10 of all three charts.

Luke Combs, “Fast Car” (River House/Columbia Nashville/Columbia): The most immediate threat to “Last Night” would have to be the song that’s landed exactly one spot below it on the Hot 100 every week since July 1. Luke Combs‘ “Fast Car” is actually leading “Last Night” on both Digital Song Sales (steady at No. 4 this week) and Radio Songs (climbing 3-2), though it still trails it significantly on Streaming Songs (No. 11, buried under an avalanche of Travis Scott debuts).

The big question for “Fast Car” is if it can gain enough on “Last Night” on radio – the only metric where either song is still growing – to make up for its streaming shortfall. While it’s already had a five-week run at No. 1 on Country Airplay, finally replaced on top this week by Jelly Roll’s “Need a Favor,” it still has room to grow on top 40 radio, with the song inching up 13-12 on the Pop Airplay listing this week; it also hits No. 1 on Adult Pop Airplay, while pushing 8-7 on Adult Contemporary. If it continues to grow steadily there, while staying level on streaming, it may close the gap enough with “Last Night” in the next couple of weeks.

Taylor Swift, “Cruel Summer” (Republic): Swift already came close to unseating Wallen earlier this summer, when her Midnights single “Karma” shot to No. 2 (largely thanks to a boost from a new Ice Spice-featuring remix), but could not quite depose “Last Night.” Now she should have another shot – not with a new song, but an older one: “Cruel Summer,” a former deep cut from her 2019 album Lover, which has ridden a wave of fan fervor and seasonal momentum (as well as official label promotion) to become a hit, and reaches a new peak of No. 4 on the Hot 100 this week.

The story with “Cruel Summer” is similar to that of “Fast Car”: “Last Night” has a sizable edge on streaming (“Summer” ranks just No. 19 on Streaming Songs this week), but is starting to fade on radio while “Summer” surges. And “Summer” is really starting to swelter on the airwaves: It became Swift’s record-setting 12th No. 1 on Pop Airplay last week, and breaks the top five on Radio Songs this week in just its seventh frame on the chart. If its velocity keeps up, it may pass both Combs’ and Wallen’s hits in due time, and could be in the hunt for No. 1 shortly after.

An interesting wrinkle in this three-way race: None of these songs have proper music videos or remixes yet on streaming services. This is essentially par for the course for Wallen (who has not historically leaned on remixes or made a music video since last summer’s “You Proof”), and outside of a recently released live clip, Combs has taken a mostly hands-off approach to promoting his “Fast Car” cover, which he did not originally intend to be a single. Swift has extensive recent history of both official videos and remixes, though – albeit only for Midnights singles, so there’s no precedent for her to pull those levers for an older song. If she does so, though, it could give “Summer” the extra heat it needs to get over the top.

IN THE MIX

Travis Scott, Utopia (Cactus Jack/Epic): Morgan Wallen may have the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 this week, but otherwise the chart belongs to Travis Scott: All 19 tracks from his July album Utopia debut this week, led by the Drake-featuring “Meltdown” (No. 3) and the Playboi Carti-featuring “FE!N,” while “K-POP,” with Bad Bunny and The Weeknd, is already a rising radio hit. Those tracks will likely lose some ground in streaming next week, but if one of them (or any of the other 17) begins to catch some viral heat, Scott certainly has the streaming juice to become a factor: He’s topped the Hot 100 four times already, including with previous album Astroworld’s breakout single “Sicko Mode.”

Gunna, “fukumean” (YSL/300): While 2023 has been short on breakout hip-hop hits, “fukumean” has been a notable exception since its July release, as part of Gunna’s A Gift & A Curse album. The TikTok-boosted smash has gotten as high as No. 4 on the Hot 100 – it slips to No. 7 this week – but it continues to perform exceptionally on streaming, and is starting to find its footing on radio, surging 28-20 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. If top 40 – which has never been particularly kind to Gunna – decides to give the song (and its radio-unfriendly hook, at least in unedited form) a real chance, he could force his way into the top three before long.

Olivia Rodrigo, “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right” (Geffen): Rodrigo’s lead single from her much-anticipated upcoming sophomore album Guts, “Vampire” actually did already debut at No. 1, but slid in subsequent weeks as first-week streams and (especially) sales declined. The song is still hanging around the lower reaches of the top 10, though– with airplay rapidly picking up (13-11 on Radio Songs this week) – and it may soon be joined in the top tier by new single “Bad Idea Right,” which is due this Friday, and very likely to extend her streak of top 10 Hot 100 debuts.

Tim McGraw Details His Special ‘Candle Time’ With Faith Hill: ‘We’re Having Our Second Honeymoon’

Country power couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill may have been married more than 25 years, but becoming empty nesters after their three daughters left home has left them feeling like newlyweds and enjoying, as McGraw adorably euphemistically calls it, their “candle time.”

“We’d gotten married quickly. We dated for a short time, got married and soon after had a baby so we didn’t have a whole lot of time to get to know each other that well until we had kids,” McGraw tells Billboard News host Tetris Kelly. “Now all of a sudden we have this time together and it kind of turned into we’re having our second honeymoon: Light the candles, turn the music on, have some fun. And now when the kids come home after about five days we’re like, (looks at his watch), ‘Don’t you have somewhere to be? Mom and dad need some candle time.’”

It turns out McGraw is just as happy to spend time on stage with his wife as he is alone at home with her in Nashville. McGraw and Hill famously embarked on one of the most successful country tours of all time with their periodic Soul2Soul outings, which featured the couple each singing their own sets and then performing together. Started in 2000, the most recent iteration ended in 2018.

“I always love singing with my wife because A, I think she’s one of the greatest singers in the world and B, I get better every time I sing with her because it’s like a Nascar trying to keep up with an Indy car,” he says. “I really have to put my big boy pants on to sing with her.”

McGraw will release his 17th studio album, Standing Room Only, Aug. 24. The title track stands at No. 17 on Billboard‘s Country Airplay chart this week.

The singer will kick off his 30-city North American Standing Room Only arena tour on March 14 in Jacksonville, Fla. Carly Pearce will serve as support.

Doja Cat’s ‘Paint the Town Red’ Off to Fiery Start on Streaming

Welcome to Billboard Pro’s Trending Up column, where we take a closer look at the songs, artists, curiosities and trends that have caught the music industry’s attention. Some have come out of nowhere, others have taken months to catch on, and all of them could become ubiquitous in the blink of a TikTok clip.

This week: The second song from Doja Cat’s new era appears off to a stronger start than her first, a new viral hit injects streaming with a particularly youthful energy, and a TV sync helps a music legend “Shine” even brighter than usual.

Doja Cat “Paints the Town Red” With Ample Streams

After launching her new musical era with the boom-bap-influenced “Attention” — which debuted and peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 — Doja Cat has returned with her newest single, “Paint the Town Red.” The Grammy-winner’s latest radio single features a prominent sample of Dionne Warwick’s classic 1964 Hot 100 top ten hit “Walk On By,” accented by subtle brass and finger snaps.

According to Luminate, “Paint the Town Red” earned just over 8.12 million official on-demand U.S. streams between August 4-7, with its biggest daily total (2.47 million) coinciding with its official release date (Aug. 4). Since its debut, “Paint the Town Red” has remained in the top ten of Spotify’s Daily Top Songs USA chart, maintaining stronger daily numbers than “Attention” did across its debut week.

Unlike some of her past hits such as the Hot 100-topping “Say So” (with Nicki Minaj), Doja’s latest hit is not riding on a wave of TikTok virality: While the official “Paint the Town Red” TikTok sound currently boasts over 11,500 posts, more of the song’s traction appears to be coming from its horror-themed music video. In the official clip for “Paint the Town Red,” Doja dances with both the devil and a Grim Reaper-esque Death figure. The music video has amassed just under 6 million global views on YouTube in under a week.

Doja’s streaming success comes on the heels of her five nominations at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, including a video of the year nod for “Attention.” – KYLE DENIS

‘Wasted Summers’ Goes Viral Thanks to Little Sister Sing-Along

Juju<3>Viral 50 U.S. chart — although it’s more accurate to say that Juju and his kid sister are sharing that No. 1 ranking.

“Wasted Summers” starts off as a melancholy pop-rock track featuring Juju bemoaning his dog-day regrets in out-of-focus vocals, but in the second half of the song, he’s joined by his 10-year-old sister Lailah, who harmonizes in an ecstatic high pitch. The duet between the teen and pre-teen siblings started taking off on TikTok late last week, with users focusing on the Lailah-assisted portion of the track and finishing the lyric, “I wasted my summer trying to…,” with their own time-chewing activities.

Streams of “Wasted Summers” have exploded over the past week — from Aug. 4-7, the song earned 647,000 official on-demand U.S. streams, a nearly 1700% increase from the previous Friday-to-Monday period, according to Luminate — and Juju<3 and manager Peyton Miller recently finalized a funding deal with Indify>posted to TikTok a few weeks ago, adorably including the hashtags #bigbrother and #littlesister. – JASON LIPSHUTZ

A ‘Righteous’ Bump for Dolly’s ‘90s Alternative Cover

You’ve likely heard that recently inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dolly Parton is recording her first rock album this year – Rockstar, due on Butterfly/Big Machine this November – but did you know that she’d previously covered one of the biggest rock hits of the mid-‘90s? The creators of HBO’s megachurch satire The Righteous Gemstones did, featuring Parton’s rootsy version of Collective Soul’s 1994 alt smash “Shine” (which she covered on her 2001 Sugar Hill/Blue Eye LP Little Sparrow) in the closing montage to the show’s season three finale, “Wonders That Cannot Be Fathomed, Miracles That Cannot Be Counted,” which aired July 30.

Parton’s version of the song saw a considerable bump as a result of the show’s surprisingly emotional use of the immaculate cover. According to Luminate, after amassing just over 10,000 official on-demand U.S. streams July 28 – 30, that number nearly tripled to just over 30,000 from July 31 – August 2, the three-day period following the finale’s airing. (It also sold nearly 500 digital songs the full tracking week of August 3, after selling a negligible amount the previous week.) As usual, heaven lets its light shine down on the Leading Lady of Country. – ANDREW UNTERBERGER

Selena Gomez & Little Sister Gracie Cuddle Up While Dancing to ‘Lover’ at Their Second Eras Tour Show

Selena Gomez and her little sister Gracie were spotted in the audience at Taylor Swift‘s recent concert in L.A., marking the sibling duo’s second time attending an Eras Tour show this summer.

In a video shared by Gomez on Instagram, she and her 10-year-old mini-me cuddle up close while swaying to the beat of “Lover,” one of the first songs Swift performs every night in her three-hour stage show. As Gracie tightly hugs her big sis, the “Lose You to Love Me” pop star sings along with Swift to the lyrics.

Gomez also shared a group photo with friends, taken from their seats on the floor of SoFi Stadium, as well as a post showing off her overflowing collection of friendship bracelets and thanking fans for trading them with her. “Another one..,” she captioned an additional snap of her Eras Tour outfit: a black Eras Tour hoodie, likely purchased at the last Swift concert she and Gracie attended.

The Only Murders in the Building actress first brought Gracie to the Eras Tour in April, with the two arriving to a show in Arlington, Texas in Swift-themed outfits. Gomez wore a Folklore cardigan, while Gracie sported a replica of the purple dress Swift wore on her Speak Now tour back in 2011.

That night, Gracie also got to have a special moment mid-show with her big sister’s best friend. Swift crouched down to gift Gracie with the black costume hat she was wearing while performing “22,” a favor Gracie returned by handing the “Anti-Hero” singer a handmade friendship bracelet.

“Thank you bestie for having me and my sissy transport into your mystical, euphoric and special world,” Gomez wrote on Instagram after the Texas concert. “Proud to know you! love you forever and always.”

Gomez is far from the only star to have turned up to one of Swift’s six straight shows at SoFi Stadium, with everyone from Brie Larson to Mindy Kaling, Lupita Nyong’o, Ashley Tisdale, Kesha, Alicia Keys and more celebs having all been spotted in attendance over the past few days. The first U.S. leg of the Eras Tour will officially conclude Wednesday (Aug. 9) following Swift’s final show at SoFi, after which she’ll take the bestselling trek global.

After stints in Latin America, Asia, Australia and Europe, Swift will return for a second leg in the States — so, who knows? Maybe Selena and Gracie will be spotted in the audience again soon.

Da Brat Shares First Photos of Son True Legend: ‘It Was Only Right’

“It was only right,” wrote Da Brat in a caption of one of the three photosets she posted to Instagram this morning. In the photos, True Legend rests against a red background donning green-gray pants and hat, while holding a miniature microphone in one hand, and a tiny boombox in the other. In another photoset featuring a photoshoot helmed by People, Da Brat and Judy pose tenderly with their baby boy. “Look, this came out of my stomach,” Da Brat told People. “I cry every day. I just look at him and boo-hoo, because I’m so grateful.”

After marrying Harris-Dupart, who serves as the founder and CEO of Kaleidoscope Hair Products, in 2022, Da Brat underwent in vitro fertility (IVF) treatments using eggs from Harris-Dupart and sperm from an anonymous donor. Following a devastating miscarriage, the “Funkdafied” rapper became pregnant with True Legend. “I never want to do that again,” Da Brat said, “but for him it was worth it.”

Another photoset, shared to both Da Brat’s official Instagram account and the page the couple created for their new baby, finds the family of three bonding in the hospital room moments after delivery. Da Brat notes that her and Harris-Dupart’s “love playlist” helped her relax during her cesarean section, not Biggie as she originally thought. “Who would ever think this? Da Brat-a-tat-tat from 1994!” she mused. “I’m with a beautiful, successful woman who completes me and inspires me to be better. I’m elated to be a mother. I never thought I would be, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I never need another thing in life.”

Da Brat has earned 13 entries on the Billboard Hot 100, including the top ten hits “Funkdafied” (No. 6) and “Not Tonight” (No. 6, with Lil’ Kim, Left Eye, Missy Elliott & Angie Martinez). The award-winning rapper has landed four titles on the Billboard 200, including 2000’s No. 5-peaking Unrestricted.

Lil Tay Dead: Teen Rapper & Viral Sensation Dies at 14

Teen rapper and viral internet personality Lil Tay, who was born Claire Hope, has died at the age of 14.

The news was announced in a statement posted on Lil Tay’s Instagram account, which described her passing as “sudden and tragic” as well as “entirely unexpected. “It is with a heavy heart that we share the devastating news of our beloved Claire’s sudden and tragic passing,” reads the statement posted Wednesday (Aug. 9). “We have no words to express the unbearable loss and indescribable pain. This outcome was entirely unexpected, and has left us all in shock.”

According to the statement, Lil Tay’s brother has also passed away. “Her brother’s passing adds an even more unimaginable depth to our grief,” it continues, not mentioning his name. “During this time of immense sorrow, we kindly ask for privacy as we grieve this overwhelming loss, as the circumstances surrounding Claire and her brother’s passing are still under investigation.”

The self-labeled “youngest flexer of the century,” Lil Tay shot to fame in 2017.

The internet star was a shock value-driven meme machine who often went viral online for her brash statements and bold personality. In one video from 2018, for instance, she cussed out her haters and showed her more than 3 million Instagram followers that she, in spite of being too young to have a drivers license, owned a luxury car — kicking a dent in the side of the vehicle to prove that she’d bought it, rather than renting it.

She was also known for her friendship with fellow social media star Woah Vicky, as well as her participation in on-camera feuds with YouTuber RiceGum and another viral sensation-turned-rapper, Bhad Babie.

During this chart week, the male-female duo of Ayase and ikura traveled to Los Angeles for its first performance Stateside at 88rising’s Head in the Clouds LA Music & Arts Festival. The pair took the stage on Sunday (Aug. 6) and was joined by the offbeat J-pop girl group ATARASHII GAKKO! for a delightful live rendition of YOASOBI’s monster hit track.

While overall points for “Idol” continue to decrease, the Oshi no Ko opener continues to dominate, holding the top spots for downloads, streaming, video views, and karaoke this week. It’s also at No. 17 for radio airplay and with a total of 13,350 points, the song is 3,200 points ahead of its competition at No. 2. YOASOBI is set to keep the momentum going as the headliner for the Rock in Japan Festival scheduled for Aug. 13.

Debuting at No. 2 this week is THE RAMPAGE from EXILE TRIBE’s “Summer Riot -Nettaiya-,“ the 20th single by the dance and vocal group. Released Aug. 2 as a double A-side single with “Everest,” “Summer Riot” is a collaborative number with Japanese drum performance group DRUM TAO. The song launched with 229,498 copies to hit No. 1 for sales and also comes in at No. 3 for radio. The track didn’t fare too well in the digital realm — No. 35 for downloads with 1,642 units, No. 32 for streaming with 3,195,380 weekly streams, and No. 73 for video — and bowed in its current position on the Japan Hot 100 powered by CD sales.

Jung Kook’s “Seven” featuring Latto holds at No. 3. The youngest BTS member appeared as one of the guests at SUGA’s solo show Agust D TOUR “D-DAY” THE FINAL that took place at KSPODOME in Seoul, South Korea Aug. 4. “Seven” falls 10-14 for downloads, holds at No. 2 for streaming, slips 3-2 for video, and stays at No. 9 for radio this week.

Tatsuya Kitani’s “Where Our Blue Is” rises 5-4 after the rising singer-songwriter performed the track live on the long-running TV show Music Station Aug. 4. The Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 opener collected points in a balanced way, coming in at No. 3 for downloads and streaming, No. 8 for video, No. 38 for sales, No. 27 for radio, and launching at No. 74 for karaoke.

Hikaru Utada’s “Gold” jumps 40-10 on the Japan Hot 100 this week after the movie the track is featured as the theme — Kingdom 3 starring Kento Yamazaki — hit Japanese theaters July 28. The latest song by the iconic J-pop singer-songwriter rules radio and comes in at No. 6 for downloads and No. 54 for streaming.

Mrs. GREEN APPLE charts four songs in the top 20 this week as the pop-rock band prepares for its first dome shows set for Aug. 12 and 13. In the top 10, “Ao to Natsu” moves 10-8 with increases in downloads and streams, while “Magic” is at No. 9 with downloads continuing to increase since the track’s release.

The Billboard Japan Hot 100 combines physical and digital sales, audio streams, radio airplay, video views and karaoke data.

Clip Of Joe Budden & Co-Host Ish Mock Meat Beef Surfaces

Joe Budden & Antwan

Joe Budden has a penchant for bringing up controversial topics on his eponymously-named podcast, often to the point he and his co-hosts have passionate debates as a result. One such discussion from an earlier exclusive Patreon episode surfaced online, prompting onlookers to make more of the mock meat beef than there is.

In a previous episode of the DSP version of The Joe Budden Podcast, Budden and co-hosts Ish and Ice discussed if it is appropriate to have a connection with the ex-girlfriend of your friend. In that earlier broadcast, Budden explicitly said that the exes of his friends are off-limits.

However, Ish raised a moment where Budden apparently met with a woman Ish previously dated. While Ish says in the Patreon episode that he actually can’t police the actions of his ex-girlfriend, Budden saw fit to challenge his longtime friend and co-host on that point. Budden brought up a moment where Ish asked him about a conversation Budden had with an ex and it became a classic shouting match between the pair.

This isn’t the first time the pair has clashed on the podcast and probably won’t be the last. Both men have strong opinions and are unafraid to debate the other. What some who commented on the video in question failed to mention in many of their reactions is that the two smoothed things over at the end. Also, the clip that has social media buzzing is months old as well.

Lawyers in Lizzo Sexual Harassment Suit by Former Dancers Say Six More People Have Contacted Them

Lizzo could be facing further legal action on the heels of a lawsuit filed by three tour dancers who claimed in a complaint filed last week in Los Angeles that the “Juice” singer subjected them to sexual harassment and a hostile work environment that included allegations that they were pressured to touch nude dancers during a live sex show.

According to a statement from attorney Ron Zambrano — who is representing dancers Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez — “we have received at least six inquiries from other people with similar stories since we filed the complaint.”

Zambrano added that, “Noelle, Crystal and Arianna have bravely spoken out and shared their experiences, opening the door for others to feel empowered to do the same. Some of the claims we are reviewing involve allegations of a sexually charged environment and failure to pay employees and may be actionable, but it is too soon to say.”

At press time a spokesperson for Lizzo had not returned a request for comment on Zambrano’s statement.

The complaint filed last week on behalf of Davis, Williams and Rodriguez accused Lizzo (born Melissa Jefferson) and her Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc. of a wide range of legal wrongdoing, including racial and religious discrimination. Among the allegations in the suit were claims that Lizzo pushed the dancers to attend a sex show in Amsterdam’s famed Red Light District and pressured them to engage with the performers.

The lawsuit also claimed that the captain of Lizzo’s dance team, Shirlene Quigley, forced her religious beliefs on the plaintiffs and took repeated actions that made them uncomfortable, including commenting about their virginity and simulating oral sex on a banana in front of them.

In one of the most notable allegations, the suit claims that Lizzo, who has made body positivity a key aspect of her brand, “called attention” to a dancer’s weight gain after a performance at the South by Southwest festival.

Last Thursday, Lizzo issued her only response to date to the suit, calling the allegations “false” and “sensationalized stories” in a statement on Twitter. “I am not the villain that people and the media have portrayed me to be these last few days,” Lizzo wrote. “I am very open with my sexuality and expressing myself but I cannot accept or allow people to use that openness to make me out to be something I am not.”

She said that the allegations that she and her company created a hostile work environment that included allegations of religious and racial discrimination were “unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed.”

Lizzo specifically addressed the allegation that she had “called attention” to a dancer’s weight gain, saying, “There is nothing I take more seriously than the respect we deserve as women in the world. I know what it feels like to be body shamed on a daily basis and would absolutely never criticize or terminate an employee because of their weight.”

Though Lizzo did not specifically address the individual accusations in the suit in her statement, she called them “sensationalized stories [that] are coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted that they were told their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional.”

In a response, Zambrano said Lizzo’s statement “only adds to our clients’ emotional distress”; at press time the names of the alleged six other people reportedly contacted Zambrano after the suit was filed had not been released. Billboard has reached out to one of Lizzo’s lawyers, Marty Singer, for comment on Zambrano’s statement but had not heard back at press time; according to NBC News, Singer had recently called the lawsuit “specious.”

Following the suit and Lizzo’s statement, filmmaker Sophia Nahli Allison — who at one point had been attached to direct the singer’s Love, Lizzo documentary — explained on her socials why she left the project. “In 2019, I traveled a bit with Lizzo to be the director of her documentary. I walked away after about 2 weeks. I was treated with such disrespect by her,” Allison wrote.

“I witnessed how arrogant, self-centered, and unkind she is. I was not protected and was thrown into a sh-tty situation with little support,” she added. Allison also said her gut told her to leave the project, and that she is “grateful” that she did, adding that she “felt gaslit and was deeply hurt.” At the time Lizzo’s reps had not returned Billboard‘s requests for comment on Allison’s claims.

Earlier this year, Amazon Studios announced that auditions had begun for the second season of Watch Out for the Big Grrls, a series that chronicled the singer/rapper’s search for her next crew of “BIG GRRRL” dancers to accompany on her 2022 tour; according to NBC, among the six unnamed people Zambrano has talked to, some said they worked on the Amazon series.

In addition, on Tuesday, the Jay-Z-founded Made In America festival, which was to feature headline sets from Lizzo and SZA, announced that it was pulling the plug on this year’s edition due to “severe circumstances outside of production control.” A statement from organizers did not give specific reasons for the cancellation and a spokesperson for promoter Live Nation referred Billboard to the statement without offering additional comment. NBC reported that before the suit against Lizzo was filed, an unnamed source close to the production said that ticket sales for this year’s Made in America fest in Philadelphia were “not good.”

COVID-19 Hospitalizations Slowly Rising Again In America

Concern is growing as the rate of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 is increasing across the United States as summer winds down.

According to reports, recorded data shows that COVID-19 hospital admissions were at 9,056. That number is an increase of 12% from the week before. However, when compared to data recording peaks from the past—44,000 weekly hospital admissions at the beginning of January, almost 45,000 in late July 2022, and the 150,000 admissions during the Omicron variant surge of January 2022—this surge isn’t worrying some in public health.

One reason is that while the rising amount of COVID-19 found in the wastewater of cities across the U.S. since June has been noticed, especially in the Northeast and the South, the rate is still 2.5 times lower than last summer according to Biobot Analytics epidemiologist Cristin Young, who is working with the Centers For Disease Control (CDC). Levels of the virus are currently being monitored at over 1,300 sewage treatment plants across the nation.

Another factor is the rate of immunity and vaccinations that have already taken place and the preparation of a newly updated COVID-19 vaccine for the fall which will address the Omicron XBB.1.5 strain. This differs from previous vaccines that contained a combination of the original and more common Omicron variants.

There is a newly detected COVID-19 variant, EG.5 which is being unofficially dubbed “Eris”. This variant is believed to be behind 17% of all new COVID-19 cases in the states. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently called the Eris variant “one of interest”. So far, researchers are noting that it doesn’t seem to be presenting a serious issue. “The virus does not appear to be evolving to become either more transmissible or more lethal at this point,” said Dr. Jay Varma, an epidemiologist at Weill Cornell Medical College.

“It is ticking up a little bit, but it’s not something that we need to raise any alarm bells over,” said Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health infectious disease specialist Dr. David Dowdy. Health officials are again advising people to take precautions, such as masking up and sanitizing thoroughly. “I’m not sure if it’s a surge, per se, or just uptick,” said Dr. David Boulware, a professor of medicine specializing in infectious diseases at the University of Minnesota Medical School before adding that it’s a reminder “that, yes, Covid still exists.”
