Zooey Deschanel Engaged to ‘Property Brothers’ Star Jonathan Scott

Zooey Deschanel is engaged to Property Brothers star Jonathan Scott, the couple announced Monday (Aug. 14).

“Forever starts now!” the couple captioned a joint Instagram post, which features a smiling photo of the pair, with the New Girl actress showing off her ring featuring pink and purple stones set in the shape of a flower.

The She & Him singer and HGTV host met and started dating in 2019 after filming an episode of Carpool Karaoke: The Series together, along with Scott’s twin brother and co-host Drew Scott and Deschanel’s Bones star sister Emily Deschanel. “From the first moment she walked over to say hello, she had a bounce in her step and an energy about her that made me immediately take notice,” Scott wrote in a Drew + Jonathan Reveal magazine essay published early last year.

In that same magazine story, Scott and Deschanel also invited fans to follow the journey as they renovated the “forever home” they purchased together in May 2020 in Los Angeles.

Deschanel was previously married to Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard from 2009 to 2012 and to film producer Jacob Pechenik from 2015 to 2019. She has two children, daughter Elsie, 8, and son Charlie, 6, with Pechenik. Scott was previously married to Kelsy Ully from 2007 to 2013 and has no children.

Magoo of Timbaland & Magoo Fame Dead at 50

Magoo, who along with rapper/producer Timbaland was behind the late ‘90s hit “Up Jumps Da Boogie,” has died at age 50. News of the artist’s death was initially posted by artist Digital Black, a member of the 1990s R&B/hip-hop group Playa, on his Instagram page.

Magoo’s cause of death has not been revealed.

Born Melvin Barcliff, Magoo and fellow Norfolk native Timothy “Timbaland” Mosley met as teenagers before joining forces as a duo. The pair’s debut album, Welcome to Our World, was released by Barry Hankerson’s Blackground Records in 1997, peaking at No. 33 on the Billboard 200 and No. 9 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The set spun off the gold-certified single “Up Jumps Da Boogie,” which sat atop the Hot Rap Songs chart for eight weeks and peaked at No. 4 and No. 12 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. Boasting guest appearances by Missy Elliott, Aaliyah and Playa, among others, the platinum-certified Welcome to Our World also rolled out a second top 10 single with “Clock Strikes” (No. 8 on Hot Rap Songs).

Timbaland & Magoo released two more albums as a group, 2001’s Indecent Proposal and 2003’s Under Construction, Part IIIndecent Proposal clocked in at No. 3 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 29 on the Billboard 200. Under Construction, Part II reached No. 16 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums; No. 50 on Billboard 200. In summer 2021, Blackground Records signed a distribution deal with Empire under which albums in Blackground’s catalog would become available to streaming services for the first time. In addition to Timbaland & Magoo, that rollout included Aaliyah’s recordings.

While Timbaland gained additional fame as a solo artist, Magoo opted not to take that route. When Billboard interviewed Timbaland and Magoo in 2001 ahead of Indecent Proposal’s arrival, Magoo had this to say about whether he would put out a solo project: “I’ve never seriously thought about doing a solo album. I’ve thought about it in passing — like if Tim decided he wanted to stop rapping. It would be really difficult for me to think about doing a record without him. We’ve been together since 1990, so [being solo] would be weird. Tim and Magoo is more a friendship than it is a group.”

Among artists and collaborators paying tribute to Magoo via Instagram were Timbaland, Missy Elliott and Ginuwine.

Timbaland said in part, “This one hits different long live Melvin aka magoo!!! Tim and Magoo forever; rest easy my king.”

In addition to posting a performance video, Timbaland also gave music fans a recommendation: “You need to hear this Pharrell verse off his 91 demo tape with Timbaland and Magoo. This is so wholesome. They went by S.B.I. (Surrounded By Idiots).”

It was Magoo who gave Elliott her “Misdemeanor” nickname, as she recalled, “We became so cool you supported me from day 1 & you said I’m going to call you Misdemeanor because it’s a crime to have that many talents. So those who don’t know Magoo gave me the name Misdemeanor When we did this song Beep Me 911 & I asked Magoo to get on it & I played this verse over and over & posting this is just heartbreaking I am so lost for words.”

Next to a photo of Magoo with the message “R.I.P. Soldier,” Ginuwine wrote, “This dude, always pushed me …I will miss you maganooo that’s what we called him ….. totally one of the best ever in my eyes always pressing forward I know we didn’t talk alot but the love was and will be always there my brotha … man oh man blessings to the family all of my condolences.”

Idina Menzel Thinks She Should Have Played Lea Michele’s ‘Older Sister’ on ‘Glee’

When Idina Menzel first appeared on Glee in 2010 as Rachel Berry’s mother Shelby Corcoran, she was 38 years old while actress Lea Michele was 23. Menzel is now reflecting on her motherly acting role in a new interview with Stellar Magazine (via The New York Post).

The Wicked actress revealed that, at the time, she had just given birth to her son, Walker — whom she shares with ex-husband Taye Diggs — and that affected her self esteem in the acting world.

“You’re worried you’re not going to work again, and then people hire you to be someone’s mother when you probably should be their older sister,” Menzel recalled to the publication about how she felt on Glee. “It just wasn’t great for the ego.”

However, despite natural body changes affecting how costumes fit her, Menzel says she “sucked it up” because she “was excited to work with [showrunner] Ryan Murphy and be a part of that hit show.”

While she only appeared on 12 episodes of Glee between 2010 and 2013, she quickly became a fan favorite among fans of the show.

For a while now, Trippie Redd’s been keeping a rather low profile but with his latest album, A Love Letter To You 5 having dropped just days ago, the crooner from Canton, OH returns with some new work to get his latest project bubbling to the top of the charts.

Linking up with Tommy Lee Sparta on the island of Jamaica for his clip to “Helicopter,” Trippie and Tommy bask in some Jamaican sun (with hoodies on?!) during the day and get things lit at night with the help of some pyrotechnics.

Speaking of getting lit, Saweetie, YG and Tyga do just that in their clip for “Birthday” where the three artists treat themselves to ice, cake, and some bubbly. So lavishly lit.

Check out the rest of today’s drops and some joints you might’ve missed over the weekend including work from J Hus featuring Burna Boy, Xavr Sosa featuring Backdoor Billz, and more.

Taylor Swift, Beyonce & More: 10 Artists Who Have Changed Offensive Song Lyrics

Ever heard a song and thought, “Wow, that didn’t age well”? So have a few of your favorite artists … about their own music.

There’s Hayley Williams, who’s long been vocal about her aversion to Paramore‘s own “Misery Business,” even choosing to temporarily retire the track from the band’s live shows in spite of it being one of their most successful songs to date, peaking at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. There’s Taylor Swift, who back in the day toed the line on her debut album’s single “Picture to Burn,” which included a since-updated lyric (now infamous among Swifties who enjoy digging up old copies of the album just to see whether it includes the original words) joking about spreading rumors your ex-boyfriend is gay to get revenge.

Swift also recently updated another lyric, this time the Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) album cut “Better Than Revenge.” In the years since the original Speak Now was released in October 2010, critics accused Swift of “slut-shaming” her romantic rival in the lyrics, when she sings: “She’s not a saint and she’s not what you think, she’s an actress, whoa/ She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress, whoa.” In the re-recorded version, Swift keeps the first line the same but changes the latter line to: “He was a moth to the flame, she was holding the matches, whoa.”

Then there’s Lizzo, who rectified the use of a controversial word on her song “Grrrls” in less than three days time. The second single off of her album Special was quickly met with criticism over its use of the ableist term “spaz” — something the “Rumors” star didn’t take lightly. “It’s been brought to my attention that there is a harmful word in my new song,” she said in a statement. “Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language. As a fat black woman in America, I’ve had many hurtful words used against me so I overstand the power words can have (whether intentionally or in my case, unintentionally).

“I’m proud to say there’s a new version of GRRRLS with a lyric change,” she continued. “This is a result of me listening and taking action. As an influential artist I’m dedicated to being part of the change I’ve been waiting to see in the world.”

Weeks later, Beyonce faced the same criticism for using the same word in her Renaissance song “Heated.” Days later, her spokesperson told Billboard that the term would be “replaced.”

From sexism to homophobia, ableism to racial prejudice, there are songs containing wording that simply doesn’t jive with the world’s modern perspectives. See how 10 artists — from the above mentioned to the Black Eyed Peas, Michael Jackson and beyond — have taken steps to move their music forward by changing offensive language.

Hans Zimmer Buys the BBC’s Historic Maida Vale Studios

The BBC’s historic Maida Vale Studios has been sold to a business partnership headed by Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer and film producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, the British broadcaster announced Monday (Aug. 14).

The famous London facility has been used for music recording since the 1930s and has played host to everyone from Adele to David Bowie to The Beatles throughout its storied history. The BBC first announced its plans to close the building and relocate to a new purpose-built music base in 2018, although Maida Vale Studios was only officially put up for sale by the broadcaster in November.

The new owners, which also includes Zimmer’s business partner, Steven Kofsky, have said that the Grade II listed building — originally a roller-skating palace — will continue to operate as a music hub and will undergo a multi-million-pound refurbishment to create a “world-class studio space for the next generation of composers, producers, editors and engineers.”

Terms were not disclosed for the deal, but last year it was reported that the studios were being advertised on the property market for offers above £10.5 million ($13.3 million). According to Sky News, a rival business consortium that included Warner Music Group controlling shareholder Len Blavatnik and film producer Matthew Vaughn also made an offer to buy the studios but was rejected.

Zimmer, Bevan, Fellner and Kofsky said they will also establish a not-for-profit education facility at Maida Vale Studios that will provide jobs and opportunities for the local community.

In announcing the sale, the BBC’s director of music, Lorna Clarke, paid tribute to the important role the venue has played in British popular culture. “We are so pleased to secure a sale which looks to continue the bright, vibrant future of music-making in this iconic building,” she said in a statement.

Zimmer recalled the first time he worked for the BBC at the complex 45 years ago. “I still remember the strong pull, the desire to touch the walls, as if that would somehow allow me to connect to the artists whose extraordinary music had resonated against these walls on a daily basis,” said the composer.

Zimmer went on to say that he now wants to “close the circle” and make the facility an inspirational place “that gives the next generation the same opportunities I was given: to create and to never give up.”

Bevan and Fellner, co-chairmen of London-based film production company Working Title, called the acquisition a “once-in-a-lifetime project” that will continue the BBC’s legacy by attracting global talent to the United Kingdom.

In addition to playing host to a wealth of rock and pop stars over the years — a long list that also includes Led Zeppelin, Dusty Springfield, Beyoncé and Bing Crosby, who made this final recording there in 1977 just days before he died — Maida Vale studios was previously home to the BBC’s pioneering Radiophonic Workshop.

At present, the facility is home to the BBC Symphony Orchestra and is regularly used to record a large number of music and drama sessions broadcast across the BBC’s radio and online network. The BBC says it has agreed to lease back the building from the new owners and will continue to use the studios until it moves to a new studio complex, which is currently under construction in East London and due to open in late 2025.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Blank Space’ Returns to Hot 100 for First Time in Eight Years

Taylor Swift’s former seven-week No. 1 hit “Blank Space,” from her 2014 LP 1989, re-enters the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Aug. 19), marking its first appearance on the survey since its initial 36-week chart run in 2014-15.

“Blank Space” re-enters with 8.4 million U.S. streams (up 23%), 4.3 million radio airplay audience impressions (essentially even week-over-week) and 1,000 downloads sold (up 51%), in the Aug. 4-10 tracking week, according to Luminate.

The song has been gaining in recent weeks, as Swift has been performing it on The Eras Tour, and ahead of the announcement of her re-recorded 1989 (Taylor’s Version) on Aug. 9. The song also jumps to No. 40 on the Billboard Global 200 chart, up 10% to 25.4 million streams worldwide (reflecting consumption in the U.S. and around 200 other countries).

1989 (Taylor’s Version), Swift’s fourth re-recorded set from her catalog, is due Oct. 27. Her original 1989 album spent 11 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2014-15, matching Fearless as her longest-leading No. 1 album.

“Blank Space” was a monumental hit for Swift, marking her third and longest-leading No. 1 at the time. With seven weeks at the summit, it stood as Swift’s longest-leading hit until “Anti-Hero” tallied eight weeks on top last November through this January. “Blank Space” also earned Grammy Award nominations for record of the year, song of the year and best pop solo performance.

Swift has since upped her total to nine Hot 100 No. 1s. Here’s a recap.

Taylor Swift’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s:
“Anti-Hero” (eight weeks, 2022-23)
“All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)” (one, 2021)
“Willow” (one, 2020)
“Cardigan” (one, 2020)
“Look What You Made Me Do” (three, 2017)
“Bad Blood,” feat. Kendrick Lamar (one, 2015)
“Blank Space” (seven, 2014-15)
“Shake It Off” (four, 2014)
“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (three, 2012)

Older songs such as “Blank Space” are eligible to re-enter the Hot 100 if they rank in the top 50 and have meaningful reasons for their resurgences. We occasionally see this phenomenon when catalog songs go viral or are newly promoted, as with Swift’s “Cruel Summer” (from 2019 and, now promoted as a single, up to No. 3 on the Hot 100), or have notable TV/film synchs that generate newfound interest, as was the case with Kate Bush’s 1985 classic “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” last year. This explains why we see holiday songs storming the Hot 100 each winter, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” returning after Halloween and, most recently, Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.” back on the Hot 100 last month following Fourth of July-related gains.

What Are the Best Wi-Fi Extenders for Rural Areas? Most Affordable & Reliable Options — According to Shoppers

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, Billboard may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

Living rural area can be a hassle when it comes to connecting your Wi-Fi and sometimes even making a phone call. Many rural locations tend to be surrounded by trees or far away from internet and cell phone towers making it harder to get a strong signal to stream TV, movies, music, gaming, taking phone calls and more.

If you’ve been struggling with your Wi-Fi signal, or the number of bars on your cell phone, there are quick solutions to help you get a better connection. But before you get started, you’ll need to narrow down a few things first.

What to Know Before You Buy a Wi-Fi Extender

We’re not in the business of selling you something that you might not need. So, before you make an unnecessary purchase, you might be able to enhance your Wi-Fi signal simply by repositioning the router. Moving your router to a central location (preferably near a window and on a shelf so it’s not near the floor) can help strengthen the signal.

Already tried moving your router? Your Wi-Fi signal probably needs a boost, but you don’t have to spend a fortune for better internet. In fact, enhancing your internet coverage can be as simple as buying a Wi-Fi extender, although you might also need to find a provider that specializes in rural internet coverage such as HughesNet, Kinetic by Windstream, EarthLink, Starlink, Frontier and Verizon.

What is the best internet for rural areas? Fiber internet, satellite internet and DSL internet are all recommended for rural areas but mobile internet could also be an option and dial-up internet is still around.

Read on for what you need to know about extenders and antennas.

Wi-Fi Extender vs. External Antenna: What’s the Difference?

What’s the difference between a Wi-Fi extender and external antenna? Technically, a Wi-Fi extender is an antenna because it amplifies the signal that you already have and distributes it internally, while an external antenna finds outside signals and distributes them inside your space. An internal Wi-Fi extender is a good choice to strengthen your signal inside, but if you want your signal to stretch even further, you might need an outdoor Wi-Fi extender.

Now that you’re up to speed on the differences between extenders and antennas, it’s time to make your purchase. To make things easier, we searched through customer reviews, Reddit forums and expert recommendations to narrow down a handful of Wi-Fi extenders for rural areas.

Best Wifi Extenders Under $200

A good Wi-Fi extender can run cost you less than $20 or up to $500 — and maybe even higher, depending on your needs and the brand name. What are some of the more affordable brands for wifi extenders? Ubiquity, Orbi, Eero and TP-Link are some of the moderately-priced options for Wi-Fi extenders under $200.

Amazon

Amazon eero 6 dual-band mesh Wi-Fi 6 router and extender

$139.99

Amazon’s Eero High Speed Wi-Fi 6 Router and Booster ($139.99) covers up to 3,000 square feet (compared to 1,500 square feet for the router by itself) and is recommended for Wi-Fi speeds of up to 500 Mbps.

“This system could not have been simpler to set up and once I figured out the best place for the extenders, I now have internet access throughout my whole house. No dead spots at all, like I did with the cable modem/router placed in a central position (well, as central as I could get),” wrote one Amazon reviewer in a 2,800 square-foot, 2.5-story home. “My modem and the eero hub (router) are back in my [second] floor bonus room ‘office’ where they belong, one extender is on the [third] floor where my husband is currently WFH [working from home], and the other extender is in a [second] floor bedroom at the opposite end of the house from the hub.”

The review continues, “The extenders don’t always get the highest speed, but they still get over 100 Mbps (close to the ethernet hookup with the Spectrum router). Also, at any given time there are 13 active devices on the system – more when my older daughter is home from college or my husband is using the [third] floor printer and/or his personal laptop. We have a roku on every floor and none have issues with buffering anymore.”

What is the best internet speed? Most internet speeds fall between 25-100 Mbps. The lower speed is good for anywhere from one to six people on up to seven devices, while 100 Mbps is more suited for streaming and downloading for larger groups on up to 10 devices. Videos and other content usually require 15 Mbps, but you’ll probably need at least 25-50 Mbps for UltraHD and 100 Mbps for 4K streaming.

Looking for a cheaper Wi-Fi extender? This Cryo360 Wifi extender retails for $35, it covers up to 9,000 square feet and has a 4.5-star Amazon rating.

When choosing the right Wi-Fi extender, consider the square footage, the number of devices that connect to your Wi-Fi and your streaming habits. If you have a larger space with multiple devices streaming at once, then you’ll probably want to spend more money for an extender, whereas a $35 extender might work better in a space with less devices and different streaming habits.

TP-Link AX3000 Dual-Band Wifi Extender

$129.99

The TP-link AX300 Dual Band Wifi extender features four, high-performance amplifiers for room-to-room coverage that supports 4K streaming; dual-band Wi-Fi speeds up to 3Gbs (2,402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz) and offers “exceptional wireless range,” per one customer review.

“TP Link is really making a name for themselves. Cannot complain. The MESH system is very swift. Moving from room to room. No network drop,”

Another customer wrote, “Excellent Wi-Fi extender. [I] needed a good signal for my backyard [TV] and music. Works great” and another raved about TP-Link’s farmhouse capabilities.

“I have a traditional farmhouse that spans three levels, with exterior cameras on the opposite corner from the router, gaming consoles upstairs directly above the router, and music and video streaming in the basement below the router. I’ve tried many different mesh router and extender configurations, however nothing has been as easy and performed as well as the TP-Link AX3000 range extender,” reads a review from Google.

Netgear comes up a lot in the search for Wi-fi extenders, but not all extenders are created equal. The EAX15 AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wall Plug Extender is on the more affordable side of the price list, but it didn’t work for me in a nearly 3,000-square foot home located in a rural town.

For outdoor extenders, Neatgear’s Orbi Tri Band Mesh Wifi extender scored a 4.0-star rating on Google and Netgear.com, but it’s unfortunately sold out at most retailers. The device extends your outside Wi-Fi coverage up to 2,500 square feet. It’s IP66-rated and designed to stand up to rain, sun, snow, sprinklers and dust. The extender features six, high-performance antennas and high-powered amplifiers; implicit and explicit beamforming for 2.4 and 5GHz bands and it’s MU-MIMO capable for simultaneous streaming to multiple devices. The Orbi Tri-Band extender is out of stock at Best Buy and Walmart, but you might be able to find one at Amazon and bulk sets of two or more.

Now that we’ve covered Wi-Fi, let’s talk a little briefly about cellular service. For those in need of better cell coverage in rural areas, Hiboost and Weboost cell phone signal extenders are two of the highly-recommended options that we’ve found online.

Hiboost Cell Phone Signal Booster for Home and Office, 5,500 sq ft, Boost 5G 4G LTE Data for Verizon AT&T and All U.S. Carriers, FCC Approved (10K Smart Link)

$484.49 $569.99 15% OFF

The Hiboost signal booster works with AT&T, Verizon and other phone carriers. It covers up to 5,000 square feet and it’s on sale for $484.49 at Amazon (reg $570).

Finally, if you live or work in a rural place and don’t have internet access at all, it might be time for as DIY project. Based on over two hundred customer reviews, the Starlink Standard AC Dual Band Wi-Fi System is a great option for fast and reliable internet in the middle of nowhere.

Best Buy

Starlink Standard AC Dual Band Wi-Fi System Kit

$599.99

The Space X-engineered system provides high-speed, low-latency internet to “the most rural and remote locations around the world.” The Starlink Kit is designed for self-install and has everything you need to get online within minutes including your Starlink, Wi-Fi router, cables, and a base.

Watch Kim Kardashian Re-Create Her ‘Search & Rescue’ Quote at Drake’s Los Angeles Concert

It’s a full-circle moment for Kim Kardashian. The reality television star attended Drake‘s concert in Los Angeles on Sunday night and was treated to none other than “Search & Rescue” — his song from earlier this year that samples a quote of Kim’s.

The SKIMS founder stood on the floor section of the concert and was seen wearing a slate-blue dress and silver accessories while passionately yelling the memorialized words: “I didn’t come this far, just to come this far and not be happy, remember that!”

The original audio of Kardashian hails from the the E! series finale of Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2021, in which she talked about her relationship with ex-husband Kanye West. Ahead of the track’s arrival in April, fans speculated that Drake was taking a shot at West by using the quote, but the rapper’s father, Dennis Graham, clarified that was not his son’s intentions. “Drake is not trolling anyone, it’s just a song,” Graham wrote in a post shared by TMZ‘s Instagram. “Why try and create a Kanye and Drake beef again???????????????”

Sunday night’s Drake concert was an eventful one: The rapper brought out Bad Bunny, who attended the show with Kardashian and sister Kendall Jenner, to reveal that the pair has a collaboration that is set to arrive with his forthcoming album, For All the Dogs.

See Kardashian re-create her “Search & Rescue” quote below:
