Janelle Monae’s ‘Lipstick Lover’ Leads Adult R&B Airplay Chart

Despite a nearly five-year gap between albums, Janelle Monae resumes her chart-topping ways as her song “Lipstick Lover” reaches No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart (dated Aug. 19). The single advances from No. 3 to crown the list as the most-played song on U.S. monitored adult R&B stations in the week ending Aug. 10, according to Luminate, though it slid 1% in plays compared with the previous tracking week.

“Lipstick Lover” secures Monae’s second Adult R&B Airplay No. 1, following what was her most recent visit to the list, “I Like That” ruled for three weeks in 2018. The singer, songwriter and actress’ new radio champ appears on her fourth studio album, The Age of Pleasure, which was released on June 9 and debuted at No. 2 on the Top R&B Albums chart. The set was her first album since 2018’s Dirty Computer, which housed “I Like That.”

In all, Monae now claims two Adult R&B Airplay No. 1s in just four visits to the list. Besides the two champs, she appeared on the chart with “Primetime,” featuring Miguel (No. 29 in 2014) and “Make Me Feel” (No. 30, 2018).

Elsewhere, “Lipstick Lover” retreats from its No. 14 peak to No. 20 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, which measures songs by combined audience totals from adult R&B and mainstream R&B/hip-hop radio stations. There, the track sheds 16% to 6.2 million audience impressions. Still, with its No. 14 result, “Lipstick Lover” logs Monae’s best showing on the chart, overtaking the No. 19 peak of “I Like That.”

As with her Adult R&B Airplay ledger, Monae has also sent four tracks on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay: “Primetime” (No. 22 peak in 2014), “Yoga,” with Jidenna (No. 29, 2015), and “I Like That” (No. 19, 2018).

Former President of the United States Donald J. Trump...

Donald Trump and his legal issues hit new heights this week after he and over a dozen other individuals were indicted in the Georgia election interference case. The former president of the United States has until August 25 to turn himself in according to the charges announced by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

In the charges read on Monday (August 14), Donald Trump and 18 others were indicted in connection to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. The 19 individuals named in the indictment face the charges under the state’s RICO act, essentially accusing Trump of running a criminal enterprise.

As seen in local outlet Fox 5 Atlanta, the indictment is almost 100 pages in length and lays out several dozen actions done by Trump and his allies. Among the charges was an attempt to sway Georgia’s secretary of state, who is a member of the Republican Party, to secure votes for Trump to win the state for its coveted electoral college votes.

Other criminal acts listed in the indictment include the harassment of an election worker while accusing them of voter fraud and pushing members of Georgia’s legislature to appoint electoral college electors who were in support of Trump. Adding to this, there were also details of a scheme to gain illegal access to data from a voting machine company.

DA Willis spoke to the press on Monday, laying out the terms of arrest warrants for the 19 defendants and the expectations of her office.

“After the indictment, as is the normal process in Georgia law, the grand jury issued arrest warrants for those who are charged. I am giving the defendants the opportunity to voluntarily surrender no later than noon on Friday the 25th day of August 2023,” Willis shared.

Also named in the indictment were Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Mark Meadows, Kenneth Chesebro, Jeffrey Clark, Jenna Lynn Ellis, Ray Stallings Smith III, Robert Cheeley, Michael Roman, David Shafer, Shawn Micah Tresher Still, Stephen Cliffgard Lee, Harrison William Prescott Floyd, Trevian C. Kutti, Sidney Powell, Cathleen “Cathy” Latham, Scott Graham Hall, and Misty Hampton (Emily Misty Hayes). While the charges among them vary, they all were charged with one count of Violation of the Georgia RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations) Act.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, reactions to the latest indictment suffered by Donald Trump have been ongoing. We’ve got those reactions below.

Victoria Monét’s New ‘On My Mama’ Music Video Tributes ’00s Southern Black Culture: Watch

Ahead of the release of Jaguar II, Victoria Monét‘s long-awaited debut studio album, the R&B singer/songwriter has unleashed a flashy new music video for her latest single, “On My Mama.”

Featuring a colorful cast including Chalie Boy, whose “I Look Good” is prominently sampled in “On My Mama,” as well as her mother and daughter, Monét’s new music video is a nuanced, heartfelt tribute to 2000s Southern Black culture. Directed by Child., the music video finds Monét effortlessly executing Sean Bankhead-crafted choreography in a rotating wardrobe of era-appropriate ‘fits, including jersey dresses, oversized white gas station tees and colorful durags, and baggy jeans paired with midriff-baring tops. With references to Ciara, Destiny’s Child and Mýa, as well as loving showcases of several Black Greek letter organizations and hilarious Black social media memes, the “On My Mama” music video is an absolute winner.

“On My Mama” follows the Lucky Daye-assisted “Smoke” and “Party Girls” (with Buju Banton) as the third single from Jaguar II. Slated for an Aug. 25 release, Jaguar II is the sequel to 2020’s Jaguar, a lush EP that became Monét’s first entry on the Billboard 200 (No. 174). In addition to the aforementioned duets, Jaguar II is also set to feature collaborations with Earth, Wind & Fire and Hazel Monét, her 2-year-old daughter.

Monét will follow the release of Jaguar II with the launch of The Jagaur Tour, her first headlining tour, kicking off Sept. 6 at the Majestic Theatre in Detroit. The Grammy-nominated artist is set to visit several cities across the U.S., U.K. and Canada, including New York City, London, Toronto and Houston.

Thieves Steal $400K Worth Of Nike Sneakers From Boxcar In Memphis

Nike Hit By Supply Chain Shortages Struggles To Keep Up With Demand Ahead Of Holiday Season

Source: Justin Sullivan / Getty

Just when it seemed like high-stakes sneaker theft was a thing of the past, thieves hit another major lick and made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of Nike sneakers this week. However, they didn’t get far.

According to WREG News 3, a group of men broke into a boxcar in North Memphis Monday (Aug. 14), and stole $400,000 worth of Nike’s in the wee hours of the morning. Unfortunately for them, police were quickly alerted to the robbery and showed up while the robbery was in process. With five cars parked on the scene of the crime including four Nissans and a Honda, police knew it was about to go down, and down it went.

WREG reports:

According to reports, multiple suspects were wearing dark clothing and ski masks. They were seen carrying multiple boxes from a train to their cars.

Officers attempted to stop some of the suspects, but four of them fled the scene on foot. After a chase, officers caught Terry Sullivan, who had a Nissan key in his front pocket.

Another suspect, Robert Doyle, ran inside the business warehouse, which MPD says only had one door. An employee locked him in, and police went in and saw him hiding under a large toolbox.

The other two suspects on foot got away.

During the incident, police say a black Nissan Maxima carrying more men sped past them and was able to get away.

As for Robert Doyle and Terry Sullivan, both men were booked and charged with five counts of Burglary of a Vehicle and Theft of Property $60,000 – $250,000. Don’t be surprised if they start dropping dime to escape doing a lengthy prison sentence. All over sneakers.

As crazy as these hits have become over the past few years, sneakerheads really just want to know which sneakers were stolen and whether or not it’ll affect their chances of getting the exclusive grails that are hard enough to cop as is. Did these thieves ransack a bunch of bricks that no one wants, or were they tipped off that this truck had some unreleased retro Jordans or SB Dunks that we’ve been waiting on?

We need some sneaker police on these cases to let us know so we can be either horrified, or breathe a sigh of relief. Just sayin’.

Is Miley Cyrus Teasing New Music With ‘Used to Be Young’ Posters?

Is new Miley Cyrus music on the way? Signs are pointing to yes, as the “Flowers” singer took to Twitter on Tuesday (Aug. 15) to share a cryptic new teaser that points to a potential new project.

“I know I used to be crazy. I know I used to be fun. You say I used to be wild. I say I used to be young,” Cyrus captioned a video of a sun-drenched street, with a building plastered in posters of her face and song lyrics from her past eras in chronological order, including, “I hopped off the plane at LAX” from “Party in the USA,” “I can almost see it, that dream I’m dreaming” from “The Climb,” “I came in like a wrecking ball” from “Wrecking Ball,” and “I can buy myself flowers” from “Flowers” before the newest lyric addition to Cyrus’ catalog: “I used to be young.”

The Disney Channel alum also changed multiple thumbnail photos on her YouTube videos to read “USED TO BE YOUNG” in all caps.

Fans in the comments section, naturally, were excited at the idea of potential new material from Cyrus (though she has not confirmed whether the tweet means a new track is on the way). Fans hit the comments section of the posts with messages like “SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP” and “USED TO BE YOUNG is coming and we’re all so excited.”

The teaser comes months after the release of Cyrus’ eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation, which arrived in March. The set, led by singles “Flowers,” “River” and “Jaded,” peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 following its release, while “Flowers” spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Labels Sue Over Old Records, Dua Lipa Must Face Copyright Case & More Top Legal News

This is The Legal Beat, a weekly newsletter about music law from Billboard Pro, offering you a one-stop cheat sheet of big new cases, important rulings and all the fun stuff in between.

This week: Record labels sue the Internet Archive over a project to digitize old records; Dua Lipa loses a bid to dismiss one of the “Levitating” copyright lawsuits; a federal judge questions the fairness of Live Nation’s arbitration agreements with ticket buyers; and much more.

Want to get The Legal Beat newsletter in your email inbox every Tuesday? Subscribe here for free.

THE BIG STORY: Historical Preservation or Blatant Infringement?

Like almost anything implicating copyright law, the Great 78 Project is something of a Rorschach test.

To the Internet Archive, it’s a project of “preservation, research and discovery,” aimed at creating a “digital reference collection of underrepresented artists and genres.” Digitizing hundreds of thousands of old 78rpm records is a much-needed effort to “ensure the survival of these cultural materials for future generations to study and enjoy.”

But according to a new lawsuit filed last week by Universal Music, Sony Music and Concord, the Great 78 is nothing more than “blatant” copyright infringement under a “smokescreen” of preservation.

“The Great 78 website is a massive, unauthorized, digital record store of recordings,” lawyers for the music companies wrote in the massive lawsuit this week, which claims the Internet Archive infringed more than 2,700 songs and potentially owes as much as $412 million in damages.

“Although Internet Archive describes the Great 78 Project’s goal as ‘the preservation, research and discovery of 78 rpm records,’ the Great 78 Project is actually an illegal effort to willfully defy copyright law on an astonishing scale,” the labels wrote.

At issue in the case are so-called pre-1972 songs — a category of music that was, when the Great 78 Project launched in 2006, not covered by federal sound recording copyrights. But in 2018, federal lawmakers extended such protection to the old records as part of the Music Modernization Act.

While the new law contained carveouts that allowed “non-commercial” uses of certain old records, the labels say the Internet Archive simply “ignored the new law and plowed forward as if the Music Modernization Act had never been enacted.”

For more, go read our full breakdown of the lawsuit, including access to the actual legal complaint filed against the Internet Archive.

Other top stories…

10 YEARS FOR TORY LANEZ – The rapper was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot, capping off three years of legal drama over the violent 2020 incident. The sentence was much harsher than the penalty sought by Lanez’s lawyers (just probation) but less than the 13 years that prosecutors had requested.

DUA LIPA CAN’T BEAT DISCO CASE – A federal judge ruled that Dua Lipa must face a copyright lawsuit accusing her of copying “Levitating” from a 1979 disco song, refusing the star’s early bid to end the case. Though she ruled that Lipa’s accusers had failed to show that the pop star had ever heard the song she was accused of copying, the judge said they had shown “just enough” to proceed on their claim that the song was so “strikingly similar” that it constitutes infringement.

TWITTER FIRES BACK AT PUBLISHERS – Twitter filed its first real response to a lawsuit from music publishers alleging widespread copyright infringement on the platform, arguing that it cannot be held liable for the actions of its users. The case claims that Twitter infringed over 1,700 different songs from writers like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, but in a motion to dismiss the case, lawyers for the Elon Musk-owned site (now rebranded to X) said the company itself was not on the hook for illegal posts by its users.

The 1975 KISS FALLOUT CONTINUES – The organizers of a Malaysian music festival are seeking 12.3 million ringgit ($2.7 million) in losses from British band The 1975 after lead singer Matty Healy’s on-stage protest of the country’s anti-gay laws prompted authorities to shut down the festival.

NO ARBITRATION FOR LIVE NATION – A federal judge ruled against Live Nation in an antitrust lawsuit over allegations of inflated ticket prices, declaring that the case should proceed as a federal class action rather than via private arbitration. Concertgoers opt into that out-of-court process when they buy tickets, but the judge ruled that the arbitration process posed a “serious risk of being fundamentally unfair” to consumers: “Because Defendants are often in effect the only ticketing game in town, would-be concertgoers are forced to accept Defendants’ [arbitration agreement] in full, or else forego the opportunity to attend events altogether.”
