If Taylor Swift & Ed Sheeran Won’t Play 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Who Will?

The 2024 Super Bowl isn’t until Feb. 11, and while we don’t know who will perform at the halftime show yet, we know at least one person who won’t: Ed Sheeran.

The singer/songwriter did an interview with Andy Cohen last week and when he was asked about headlining the Super Bowl, he suggested he’d be better as a halftime guest than the main attraction. “There was a conversation a while ago — I think it was when Coldplay did it — of me going up to play ‘Thinking Out Loud,’” he recalled of the 2016 halftime show. “I think that would be the only way I’d do it, is if I was joining someone else.”

Someone else he might join would include friend and frequent collaborator Taylor Swift — but reports last week said she’s turned down the 2024 halftime show. And anyway, it would be pretty challenging for Swift to pull off that date with her international Eras Tour dates taking her to Tokyo from Feb. 7-10 and then straight to Australia for a Feb. 16 concert.

So who will follow up Rihanna’s headlining set and play Super Bowl next year? On the new Billboard Pop Shop Podcast, Katie & Keith are checking in to see who Billboard readers are picking in our Super Bowl fan poll and to make some suggestions of our own — including a possible Trolls-fueled *NSYNC reunion.

Listen to the full show below:

Also on the podcast, we’ve got chart news on how the viral hit “Rich Men North of Richmond” by Oliver Anthony Music storms onto the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart at No. 1. The previously unknown artist — who had never been on any Billboard chart until this week — now has the most popular song in America, following wide media coverage and strong sales and streaming numbers. Plus, friend of the podcast Kylie Minogue returns to the Pop Airplay chart for the first time in nearly two decades, as “Padam Padam” debuts on the chart. What was her last single to chart on Pop Airplay, and when did it happen?

Randy Rainbow Slams Donald Trump Over Criminal Indictments in ‘Funny Girl’ Parody

While Donald Trump plans to turn himself over to Georgia authorities on Thursday (Aug. 24) after being indicted for attempting to interfere in the 2020 election, internet star Randy Rainbow is making sure to take another shot at the beleaguered former president.

On Tuesday (Aug. 22), Rainbow unveiled his latest parody video, mocking Trump for his four indictments and 91 felony charges for alleged crimes ranging from mishandling classified information to RICO violations. As Rainbow puts it in a faux interview with Trump at the outset of his new clip, “Just nine more and you get a free mugshot!”

As the music behind him slowly picks up, Rainbow immediately launches into a song titled “Don’t Arraign on His Parade,” a cheeky parody of Bob Merrill and Jule Styne’s classic Broadway number “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from Funny Girl. Dressed in his best Barbra Streisand-as-Fanny Brice drag, Rainbow jeeringly applauds Trump’s full-steam-ahead approach to his 2024 campaign, while adding that “he can run, but he can’t win a race in handcuffs.”

Just as he reaches the song’s iconic bridge, Rainbow quickly switches gears to deliver a cheeky rendition of The Pointer Sisters’ “I’m So Excited” (with the lyrics appropriately switched to “he’s so indicted”). Popping on screen in full-blown ’80s cosplay, Rainbow continues to lambast the former president, singing that “he’s about to lose in court, and he doesn’t like it!”

While Trump may be facing significant legal troubles in the immediate future, his popularity among Republican voters remains as strong as ever — in a recent New York Times/Siena College poll, Trump held a 37 percentage point lead over his nearest Republican challenger, Ron DeSantis, while all other potential candidates failed to garner more than 3 percent support.

Check out Randy Rainbow’s latest parody video above.

National Cinema Day Is Back! Where to Buy $4 Tickets to ‘Barbie,’ ‘Oppenheimer’ & Other Must-Watch Movies

All products and services featured are independently chosen by editors. However, Billboard may receive a commission on orders placed through its retail links, and the retailer may receive certain auditable data for accounting purposes.

Movie tickets just got cheaper — at least for a day. If you haven’t seen Barbie, Oppenheimer and more of the year’s biggest films on the big screen, you can watch them for just $4 during National Cinema Day.

The annual event, launched last year by the Cinema Foundation, returns on Sunday (Aug. 27). For one day only, moviegoers will get the opportunity to watch or rewatch movies in theaters for one low ticket price.

‘Barbie’ Movie Funko Pops: Where to Buy the Adorable Collectibles Before They Sell Out

National Cinema Day 2023 celebrates “the power of movies to bring us all together,” the organization said in a statement, per USA Today. More than 3,000 theaters will be participating in National Cinema Day, including AMC, Regal and Cinemark.

How to Buy National Cinema Day Tickets Online for $4

You don’t have to wait until the weekend to buy your tickets for National Cinema Day. Purchase advance tickets online through Fandango, in addition to AMC Theaters, Cinepolis, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark and other movie theaters.

Fandango National Cinema Day Tickets

$4

Most of the websites of the participating theaters put up “National Cinema Day” banners on the homepage, but you might have to enter the information in manually, depending on the website or app.

To get started, select the film of your choosing and set the date to Aug. 27. Changing the date should automatically drop the ticket price to $4. The discount applies to matinee and regular-priced tickets.

Be sure to check with the movie theater or ticket website if you’re not sure how many $4 tickets you can purchase at once. Fandango, for example, allows you to purchase up to nine tickets at a time.

In addition to $4 movie tickets, AMC and other participating theaters will be offering National Cinema Day deals on drinks, popcorn and candy.

Cinemark National Cinema Day Tickets

$4

With Barbie and Oppenheimer ruling the box office, the one-day ticket haul could add a significant boost to what has already been a historic box-office run for both films, and a ticket spike for some of the other big-budget movies that didn’t perform as well, such as Blue Beetle, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part I.

“Following the rousing success of the first annual National Cinema Day, we welcome everyone to join us for the communal experience of one of America’s favorite past times,” Jackie Brenneman, president of The Cinema Foundation told Deadline.

Which new movies are debuting this weekend? Some of the new releases include Bottoms, Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story, The Hill, Golda and Retribution. The Little Mermaid will also be returning to theaters as a sing-along film for National Cinema Day.

Other movies currently in theaters: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Meg 2, Elemental, Theater Camp, Strays, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

If you’re unable to make it out to theaters for National Cinema Day, most of the films featured are available to stream on-demand. Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, The Little Mermaid, Super Mario Bros., Elemental and more are available to rent on Prime Video (Super Mario Bros. is also streaming for free on Peacock) and other digital platforms. Barbie will arrive on digital platforms in Sept. 5.

Idina Menzel Hasn’t Been Managed by Scooter Braun for Months

Idina Menzel parted with manager Scooter Braun at the beginning of the year, sources close to the situation tell Billboard, adding the actress and recording artist to the growing list of Braun’s clients who have recently departed his management company, SB Projects. Another source says the “amicable” split happened last year.

Menzel announced she had signed with Braun in May 2019. The confirmation of her departure follows news that Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande also exited their deals with SB Projects this year.

News of the split was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Representatives for Menzel and Braun declined to comment.

Menzel is known for her roles in such Broadway productions as Rent and Wicked (for which she won a Tony) as well as her voice performances in both installments of Disney’s Frozen series. In 2014, she scored a top five hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Let It Go” from the first Frozen movie. Her recent acting roles include the Disney+ live-action musical Disenchanted and Amazon Studios’ Cinderella starring Camila Cabello. She released her seventh studio album, Drama Queen, on Friday (Aug. 18).

In 2021, Braun sold SB Projects’ parent company Ithaca Holdings to South Korean entertainment conglomerate HYBE, under which SB Projects has continued to operate. Braun is now HYBE America’s CEO and earlier this year helped oversee HYBE’s purchase of leading hip-hop label Quality Control.

SB Projects’ artist roster currently includes longtime client Justin Bieber. Following a report Friday (Aug. 18) that Bieber was looking to leave SB, reps for both parties told Billboard that such “rumors” were “not true.”

J Balvin, who also signed with Braun in 2019, left in May and is now managed by Roc Nation.

Hot Latin Songs ranks the most popular Latin songs of the week, blending airplay, steams, and digital sales.

“Mi Ex Tenía Razón” leads the new haul bursting in at No. 1. The song traces its high start to 15 million official U.S. streams earned in the week ending Aug. 17, according to Luminate. The sum yields a No. 14 start on the overall Streaming Songs chart and an equal No. 1 launch on Latin Streaming Songs. It also sold 2,000 copies, allowing for a No. 1 debut on Latin Digital Song Sales.

“Mi Ex Tenía Razón” makes a mark on radio airplay in line with its big streaming and sales splash. It’s the only new song from Bichota Season to debut on the overall Latin Airplay, at No. 28, with 4 million in audience impressions earned during the same tracking week.

Meanwhile, “Qlona,” Karol G’s first collab with Peso Pluma, takes off at No. 2 with 12 million official U.S. streams and 1,000 downloads sold.

Those two tracks join “S91” in the chart’s top 10. The latter previewed Bichota Season as the first single, debuting at No. 10 in July. On the current ranking, it rises 20-6 with the Greatest Gainer Sales/Streaming honors, fueled by 8.9 million streams, up 73%. It also re-enters at No. 37 on the overall Streaming Songs list, and rallies 25-6 on Latin Streaming Songs.

Three other tracks outside Bichota hold steady on Hot Latin Songs, making a total of 13 simultaneous songs on the current ranking. Here’s the recap:

No. 1 “Mi Ex Tenía Razón” (debut)
No. 2 “Qlona,” with Peso Pluma (debut)
No. 6, “S91”

Chris Young Parts Ways With Management Company The AMG

Chris Young has parted ways with Nashville-based management company The AMG (short for Artist Management Group), a rep for the singer has confirmed to Billboard.

Along with Brad Paisley, Young was one of Rob Beckham‘s flagship clients when he launched The AMG in 2019 with music manager Bill Simmons. The AMG’s official website still lists Paisley, Chris Colston and couple/musical duo Kat & Alex (who recently announced they are “parting ways both musically and romantically”) as clients.

Beckham launched The AMG after leaving his nearly 10-year tenure at WME Nashville (during which time he rose to partner/co-head) in 2018. Beckham’s clients at the booking agency included Young, Paisley, Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire and Blake Shelton. Beckham is a previous Billboard Country Power Players honoree and a CMA-SRO talent agent of the year award recipient. Simmons was previously a partner at management company Fitzgerald Hartley, managing the careers of Young and Paisley. Fitzgerald Hartley closed in 2019.

Young’s current radio single, “Looking For You,” is No. 16 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, and No. 31 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Since issuing his self-titled debut album in 2006, Young has earned 11 No. 1 Country Airplay chart hits, including his 2010 hit “The Man I Want to Be,” and 2015’s “I’m Comin’ Over,” which each spent three weeks atop the Country Airplay chart.

In 2021, Young’s collaboration with Kane Brown, “Famous Friends,” also topped Billboard’s Year-End Country Airplay songs chart, having reached No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart in July 2021.

Young is currently meeting with potential new managers.

The AMG did not respond to a request for comment.

No Copyrights For A.I. Works – But Tougher Questions Loom

The rise of artificial intelligence will pose many difficult legal questions for the music business, likely requiring some combination of litigation, regulation and legislation before all the dust settles. But on at least one A.I. issue, a federal judge just gave us a clean, straightforward answer.

In a decision issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell ruled that American copyright law does not cover works created entirely by artificial intelligence – full stop. That’s because, the judge said, the essential purpose of copyright law is to encourage human beings to create new works.

“Non-human actors need no incentivization with the promise of exclusive rights under United States law, and copyright was therefore not designed to reach them,” the judge wrote.

Though novel, the decision was not entirely surprising. Federal courts have long strictly limited copyrights to content created by humans, rejecting it for works created by animals, by forces of nature, and even those claimed to have been authored by divine spirits, like religious texts.

But the ruling was nonetheless important because it came amid growing interest in the future role that could be played in the creation of music and other content by so-called generative AI tools, similar to the much-discussed ChatGPT. The issue of copyright protection is crucial to the future role of AI, since works that are not protected would be difficult to monetize.

Trickier legal dilemmas lie ahead. What if an AI-powered tool is used in the studio to create parts of a song, but human artists then add other elements? How much human direction on the use of AI tools is needed for the output to count as “human authorship”? How can a court filter out, in practical terms, elements authored by computers?

On those questions, the current answers are much squishier – something that Judge Howell hinted at in her decision. “Undoubtedly, we are approaching new frontiers in copyright as artists put AI in their toolbox to be used in the generation of new visual and other artistic works. The increased attenuation of human creativity from the actual generation of the final work will prompt challenging questions.”

“This case, however, is not nearly so complex.”

Other top stories this week…

MJ ABUSE CASES REVIVED – A California appeals court revived lawsuits filed by two men who claim Michael Jackson sexually abused them as children, ruling that they can pursue negligence claims against his companies. A lower court dismissed the cases on the grounds that staffers had no power to control Jackson, who was the sole owner of the companies. But the appeals court called such a ruling “perverse” and overturned it: “A corporation that facilitates the sexual abuse of children by one of its employees is not excused from an affirmative duty to protect those children merely because it is solely owned by the perpetrator.”

SMOKEY ROBINSON TRIAL VICTORY – The legendary Motown singer won a jury trial against a former manager who claimed he was owed nearly $1 million in touring profits, capping off more than six years of litigation over the soured partnership. Robinson himself took the stand during the case, telling jurors that the deal was never intended to cover concert revenue.

“GAMING THE SYSTEM” – SoundExchange filed a lawsuit against SiriusXM claiming the satellite radio giant is using bookmaking trickery in order to withhold more than $150 million in royalties owed to artists. The case centers on allegations that SiriusXM is manipulating how it bundles satellite services with web streaming services to “grossly underpay the royalties it owes.”

TIKTOK JUDGE RESPONDS – A judge in New Jersey defended himself against misconduct allegations over TikTok videos in which he lip-synced to Rihanna’s “Jump” and other popular songs, admitting “poor judgment” and “vulgar” lyrics but saying he should receive only a light reprimand for what intended as “silly, harmless, and innocent fun.”

LAWSUIT OVER TAKEOFF SHOOTING – Joshua Washington, an assistant to the rapper Quavo, filed a lawsuit over last year’s shooting in Houston that killed fellow Migos rapper Takeoff. He claims injuries sustained during the attack are the fault of the bowling alley where the shooting took place, which he says failed to provide adequate security, screening or emergency assistance.

GUNPLAY FACING FELONY COUNTS – The rapper Gunplay was arrested in Miami and hit with three felony charges over an alleged domestic violence incident in which he is reportedly accused of drunkenly pointing an AK-47 assault rifle at his wife and child during an argument.

FRENCH DIDN’T CLEAR SAMPLE? – The rapper French Montana was hit with a copyright lawsuit claiming his 2022 song “Blue Chills” features an unlicensed sample from singer-songwriter Skylar Gudasz. She claims he tentatively agreed to pay her for the clip – both in an upfront payment and a 50 percent share of the publishing copyright — but then never actually signed the deal.

YOUTUBE FRAUDSTER SENTENCED – Webster “Yenddi” Batista Fernandez, one of the leaders of the largest-known YouTube music royalty scam in history, was sentenced to nearly four years in prison after pleading guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy. Under the name MediaMuv, Batista and an accomplice fraudulently collected roughly $23 million in royalties from over 50,000 songs by Latin musicians ranging from small artists to global stars like Daddy Yankee.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Slashes Earnings Outlook, Blames Slow Outdoor Gear Sales & Retail Theft

Dick's Sporting Goods Shares Rise On Strong Earnings

The financial numbers Dick’s Sporting Goods are looking really shakey, and according to the retail giant, you can blame slow sales and people going into the store using their five-finger discount.

Spotted on CNBC, Dick’s Sporting Goods’ current outlook isn’t looking too rosy. The company reported on Tuesday, August 22, a 23% drop in profits and will be slashing its earning guidance for the year. As far as the culprit for the chain’s financial woes, Dick’s blames it on lackluster sales and the uptick in retail theft.

Per CNBC:

For the first time in three years, Dick’s fell short of Wall Street’s estimates on the top and bottom lines. It also announced cuts to its global head count. The company’s shares opened about 24% lower.

Here’s how the company did in its second fiscal quarter compared with what Wall Street was anticipating, based on a survey of analysts by Refinitiv:
  • Earnings per share: $2.82 vs. $3.81 expected
  • Revenue: $3.22 billion vs. $3.24 billion expected

The company’s reported net income for the three-month period that ended July 29 was $244 million, or $2.82 per share, compared with $318.5 million, or $3.25 per share, a year earlier.

Sales rose to $3.22 billion from $3.11 billion a year earlier.

Shrink Is Hurting Dick’s Sporting Goods

The website further reports that shrink (retail jargon for theft) is part of why the company decided to lower its profit forecast for the year, which it hasn’t done in 20 years.

In a news release, CEO Lauren Hobart said, “Our Q2 profitability was short of our expectations due in large part to the impact of elevated inventory shrink, an increasingly serious issue impacting many retailers. Despite moderating our 2023 EPS outlook, the enthusiasm we have for our business and the confidence we have in our long-term growth opportunities have never been stronger.”

The company also notes the slowdown in sales regarding its outdoor category, hinting at people not being in the mood to cop camping gear and other items to enjoy the great outdoors.

Welp.

The next step after these moves are store closures. Will Dick’s suffer the same fare as Foot Locker, which is expected to close 400 locations by 2026?

We shall see.
