Miley Cyrus & Selena Gomez on the Charts: Ahead of ‘Used to Be Young’ & ‘Single Soon,’ How Do They Compare?

As the Disney Channel alumni’s parallel careers meet again, Billboard looks back on both stars’ biggest chart achievements.

From ruling Disney Channel with Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place to dominating the 2023 Billboard Hot 100 with “Flowers” and “Calm Down,” Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez have been mainstays in the pop culture zeitgeist for the better part of two decades.

On Friday, the Grammy-nominated multi-hyphenates will both unleash their newest singles.

Cyrus’ “Used to Be Young” serves as her first piece of new music since the release of Endless Summer Vacation back in March. The song finds Miley getting self-reflective on her wilder days of yesteryear while allowing “sadness and joy to be happening simultaneously,” as she said in a snippet of her Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions) ABC special. Of the song’s creation, Cyrus revealed, “Although my work is done, this song will continue to write itself everyday. The fact it remains unfinished is a part of its beauty. That is my life at this moment… unfinished yet complete.”

Gomez’s “Single Soon” is her first non-soundtrack English-language solo single since 2020’s “Boyfriend.” Following the release of that track, which introduced the deluxe edition of her 2020 album Rare, Gomez earned her first Grammy nomination for her Latin pop EP Revelación; guested on songs from Camilo, Coldplay and Rema; and released “My Mind & Me,” a standalone single for her 2022 documentary of the same name. “Single Soon” finds Gomez reveling in the joy of not being in a relationship. The Emmy-nominated Only Murders in the Building actress even promoted the song with a Kim Cattrall-approved Sex and the City homage.

Both Cyrus and Gomez have played into the joint release date for their new singles. On her Instagram Story (Aug. 18), Gomez shared a clip of her guest appearance on Hannah Montana with the caption “@mileycyrus and I both have a SINGLE SOON and we are releasing on the same day. We have been friends since we USED TO BE YOUNG. Excited for August 25th!” Cyrus quote-tweeted the same clip on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “@selenagomez and I are both dropping our new SINGLEs SOON… I say we USED TO BE YOUNG.”

As Barbenheimer gives way to another pop-culture double-header, read up on all of Miley Cyrus’ and Selena Gomez’s most impressive Billboard chart achievements thus far.

‘Barbie’ Bests ‘Super Mario Bros.’ as 2023’s Top-Grossing Film in U.S.: Here’s the Top 10

It’s official: On Thursday (Aug. 24), Barbie topped The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the highest-grossing film in the U.S. for 2023, according to boxofficemojo.com. Barbie has grossed $575.4 million in the U.S., compared to $574.3 million for The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Barbie became the year’s box-office champ in just a little more than a month. The film was released in the U.S. on July 21. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released on April 5. Barbie has been both a commercial and critical hit. It has provided joy and escapism for millions in a summer dominated by grim headlines about climate change, multiple indictments of a former president and a war in Ukraine that grinds on.

Five of the films in the top 10 are the latest installments in franchises. A sixth is a reboot of a previous film of the same name.

As we previously reported, Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, has also become the top-grossing film in the U.S. that was directed or co-directed by a woman. The previous record-holder was Frozen II (2019), which was co-directed by Jennifer Lee. The previous record-holder for a film that was solely directed by a woman was Wonder Woman (2017), which was directed by Patty Jenkins.

If Barbie winds up as the No. 1 box-office hit of 2023 – that is to say, if nothing comes along in the next four months or so to surpass it – this will be the first time that a film directed or co-directed by a woman has become the year’s top hit. Shrek, co-directed by Vicky Jenson, came closest; it was the No. 2 box-office hit of 2001.

Barbie has also been a hit on the Billboard charts. Barbie: The Album has climbed as high as No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Two singles from the album – Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World” – have made the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. A third single, Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?,” has come close, so far peaking at No. 14.

Here are the 10 top-grossing films in the U.S. in 2023, through Thursday (Aug. 24), according to boxofficemojo.com. All release dates are in 2023, unless otherwise noted.

A breakdown of Kobe Bryant’s Mamba Moments In NBA 2K24:

  • The NBA Three-Point Record. In 2003, Kobe’s record-breaking three-point shooting performance against the Seattle Supersonics, converting 12 of his 18 attempts from behind the arc.x
  • The King of Sac. Up 3-0 against the Sacramento Kings, Kobe slammed the door shut on the division rival’s postseason hopes with a remarkable 48 points and 16 rebounds. At just 22 years old, the then-three-time All-Star proved that the stage wasn’t too big for him.

Bert Kreischer Talks Going on His Dream Tour: The Fully Loaded Comedy Festival, One of the Year’s Top Touring Comedy Shows

When comedian Bert Kreischer started outlining the concept for his party-driven Fully Loaded Comedy Festival tour, the famed party animal decided to sit down with his thoughts and sketch out a tour agenda like no other — one that would both bring his vision for the ultimate comedy tour to fruition and potentially serve as the outline for his legacy.

“Each summer, I want to surround myself with my favorite humans, which are always going to be comics,” he said. “I want to hang out with my friends and family, tour and have fun. I want to float on rivers, boat on lakes, end up in oceans, go hiking, shoot guns, get high on mushrooms and do whatever we can to have a blast.”

Kreischer’s dream is now a reality, wrapping up last month after a 17-date tour across North America — including the Orion Amphitheater in Huntsville, Alabama, and ending at the Gorge Amphitheater in Washington. When the numbers are all reported to Billboard Boxscore, the tour is likely to come in at a more than $10 million gross, making it one of the top earning comedy tours of the year.

Headlined by Kreischer, who has seen his profile skyrocket in the last two years thanks to his films like 2023’s The Machine, comedy specials like Hey Big Boy and Razzle Dazzle and popular comedy podcasts including “2 Bears, 1 Cave” with fellow comedian Tom Segura, this year’s stacked lineup for Fully Loaded included Mark Normand, Shane Gillis, Tiffany Haddish, Stavros Halkias, Fortune Feimster, Dave Attell, Lewis Black, Jim Norton, Andrew Santino, Big Jay Oakerson, Jay Pharoah, Dan Soder, Chad Daniels, Ralph Barbosa, Rosebud Baker and Tammy Pescatelli.

“Bert selects all of the talent for the show — its not being picked by a promoter or a talent buyer,” says manager manager Judi Marmel, a partner at Levity Talent. “In a world where nothing is agnostic, the festival is the purest form of an artist executing their vision.”

Fully Loaded was born out of the Hot Summer Nights Tour sold-out drive-in series Kreischer launched during the pandemic in 2020. Wanting to recreate his success for 2022, Kreischer — along with Marmel, UTA agent Heidi Feigin and UTA partner and Head of Comedy Touring Nick Nuciforo — came up with the idea to create a traveling comedy festival inspired by the original Lollapalooza touring festival. The festival also partnered with the charity Comedy Gives Back, an organization founded as a safety net for comics by providing them with financial crisis relief, mental health support and more.

“Our intention for creating Fully Loaded was to build a lifestyle brand that represents all of the aspects of life that Bert enjoys the most, that could then support multiple ventures and revenue streams for years to come,” says Marmel.

Kreischer says his wife LeeAnn convinced him to invest the first years earnings from the 2022 run back into the festival and worked with a team of friends to book excursions and activities for participating comedians.

“We wanted to make it the best experience a comic could ever have with extra tour buses and plenty of amenities to make it feel like a great gig,” Kreischer says — like a visit to Churchhill Downs or batting practice with the home team at the stadium they were playing.

For this year’s tour, Kreischer says his team booked activities for every day of the tour, which was split into four separate four-day runs — June 14-17 playing Forest Hills Stadium in New York, followed by CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, PNC Field in Moosic, Penn. and Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion in Gilford; June 22-25 at Turtle Creek Stadium in Traverse City, Michigan, Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana Enterprise Center in St Louis, Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. The tour then took a two week break before returning for eight more July dates, including a July 6 show at Huntsville, Alabama’s new Orion Amphitheater, a July 8 show at AutoZone Park in Memphis, a July 12 show at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and the show closer July 15 at the Gorge.

Throughout the tour, a content team of producers, editors, and marketing executives put together video clips and social media content from the tour, leading to a spike in interest and ticket sales as the tour chugged along. By the time the tour landed in Las Vegas, most comedians saw big spikes in their social numbers, and fans were booking tickets and flying in from out of town to see the show.

Kreischer says organizing the festival wasn’t always easy, having to sometimes make tough decisions like like deciding each night’s lineup, curated to fit the venue and market and momentum of the overall tour.

“There are certain acts that other comedians have a hard time following,” Kreisher says. “Acts like Chad Daniels, who was simply amazing. And I also had Tiffany Haddish on the lineup, who no one could f–king follow either. Most promoters wouldn’t give a s–t and say ‘just find someone to follow them,’ but as a comic, I had to say, “No that’s not how it works,” and I’m able to talk to a comedian like Dan Soder and ask him to open — and he’ll do it because he understands, and the request is coming from a comedian.”

Kreischer adds, “And then I will take the bullet and close the show behind someone like Chad or Tiffany. Everyone there knows me — I just take my shirt off and people go crazy.”

“At the heart of [things],” Kreischer says, “I love comics, and I love being on the road with comics. And my daughters who I bring on tour with me love it too. During the tour, one of them told me, ‘I love this — you wake up in a different city every morning, you have breakfast ready and everyone you eat with is hilarious. This is amazing.’”

Blueface Reportedly Stabbed in LA, Cardi B Threatens to Sue X User, Selena Reacts to AI & More | Billboard News

Cardi B threatens to sue an X user over Offset AI video and Selena Gomez reacts to an AI version of herself singing The Weeknd’s “Starboy.” Tim McGraw stopped by Billboard News to talk about his new album ‘Standing Room Only,’ country music dominating the charts and more. Blueface was reportedly stabbed during a boxing gym altercation in LA. Dua Lipa is on the cover of ‘Vogue France’ and opens up about her thoughts on motherhood and how she feels about listening to her own music. And more!

Tetris Kelly:
Cardi B and Selena Gomez are cracking down on AI. Did Blueface get stabbed? Dua Lipa is getting candid with ‘Vogue.’ We have country music legend Tim McGraw in studio and the songs of the summer for 2021.

The amount of news we have today is stressing me out! Plus, I’m so excited about Tim McGraw. So let’s just get right into this AI mess. Cardi B and Selena Gomez speak out on AI, and it may end up in court.

Cardi B:
You’re gonna be getting sued and we’re gonna make an example out of you.

Tetris Kelly:
Cardi B is threatening to sue one X user after they allegedly posted fake photos and AI-generated voice messages showing evidence Offset cheated on Cardi.

Cardi B:
That was a terrible AI voice by the way so yeah.

Tetris Kelly:
Cardi went on to dox the X user and their father, so it’s turning into a whole mess. Selena Gomez is also putting her two cents in on AI. After someone posted an AI-generated Selena cover of The Weeknd’s ‘Starboy,’ she hopped in the comments section to post “Scary.” They joined the long list of musicians against AI, like Ed Sheeran, Drake and Billboard cover star Lil Wayne.

Trump Hires Gunna, T.I. & Rick Ross Lawyer Before Surrendering In Fulton County

HipHopWired Featured Video

T.I. Sentencing Hearing

Donald Trump goes through lawyers at about the same rate civilians go through shoes and sneakers. The ex-President just hired a new lawyer, who in the recent past represented rappers Rick Ross. T.I. and Gunna, and singer Usher, among others, on the same day he is to surrender to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office for his RICO case.

Yeah, Cheeto caught a RICO charge (which has created some now well-traveled mug shots of his famed co-defendants like Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows) and now he’s hiring an accomplished lawyer from the “urban music” world, again. You can’t make this stuff up. Trump’s new lawyer is Steven Sadow, who is a well-regarded criminal defense lawyer. We trust that he demanded an insane upfront payment considering Trump’s well-documented penchant for not paying his attorneys in full.

The New York Times reports that Sadow filed documents with the court on Thursday (August 24) saying he was now “lead counsel of record for Donald John Trump” while Drew Findling will be stepping down as Trump’s representation in his RICO case. It was Findling and his team who negotiated Trump’s $200,000 bond in the case.

The Atlanta-based Sadow has handled some high-profile cases in the Hip-Hop world as a defender. Some of his clients have included Usher, Rick Ross and T.I. He infamously represented Ray Lewis’ co-defendant Jeffrey Sweeting in the ex-NFL linebacker’s murder trial, for which he was acquitted. Most recently, he represented Gunna in the rapper’s own RICO case involving Young Thug and YSL. He managed to get Gunna, born Sergio Kitchens, “negotiated guilty plea” that saw him get time served in exchange for a guilty plea while maintaining his innocence. This hasn’t gone over well with some fans, and fellow rappers

Clearly, Atlanta rappers stay hiring pricey lawyers considering Findling, now Trump’s former lawyer, has represented Gucci Mane. Cardi B, Offset and BMF’s Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory, amongst others.

Polo G Arrested for Firearm Possession During Home Police Raid

Polo G was arrested in Los Angeles on Wednesday (Aug. 23) while police raided his home, Billboard can confirm.

It all started last week, on August 15, when Polo G’s brother Taurean Bartlett (a.k.a. Trench Baby) was identified as the suspect for a robbery in Granada Hills, Calif. According to LAPD reports, when the victim arrived at Taurean’s house to film a music video, the rapper pulled out a “handgun with an extended
magazine and demanded that the victim transfer money to an unknown account.”

Detectives then obtained an arrest warrant for Taurean, before discovering that he was living with Polo G. Upon serving the warrant on Wednesday (Aug. 23), police discovered “numerous firearms” at Polo G’s home and arrested both rapper brothers. Trench Baby was booked for robbery and Polo G was booked for possession of a short-barreled rifle at Van Nuys Jail.

Billboard has reached out to Polo G’s reps, but did not receive a response at press time.

Polo G’s lawyer, Bradford Cohen, told People of the arrest: “Polo is being held under the guise that the police department needs to double check that he is not a convicted felon as there was a purported firearm found in the home. He is not and never was a convicted felon. Any previous charges he had I got dismissed and it’s all public record.”
