Green Day Is Selling ‘Nimrod’ Shirts With Donald Trump’s Mugshot

Green Day is mocking Donald Trump’s mugshot for a good cause.

The former president was booked at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta on Thursday (Aug. 24) on felony charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and while it’s his fourth indictment this year, the booking marked the first time Trump’s mug shot was taken.

Green Day has now taken the historic photo and put it on merch. The band took to Instagram on Friday (Aug. 25) to share a photo of a black t-shirt that features their Nimrod. album art with the original portraits replaced by the mugshot. “Good Riddance,” they fittingly captioned the photo, in reference to one of the album’s biggest hits.

Proceeds from the shirt, which is priced at $35 and available for 72 hours, will go towards Greater Good Music, which is currently helping bring food to the victims of the Maui wildfires.

Fulton County authorities took mug shots of all 19 people charged in the case, which besides Trump, included his lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell as well as his former chief of staff Mark Meadows. Trump left the jail on a $200,000 bond.

Nimrod., which was released in 1997, peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard 200 albums chart following its release and spent an impressive 70 total weeks on the chart.

Diane Keaton Supports Miley Cyrus (Again!) With Throwback Video Set to ‘Used to Be Young’

Miley Cyrus‘ latest single “Used to Be Young” arrived on Friday (Aug. 25), and Diane Keaton is already a fan. Following the release of the track, the Annie Hall actress showed the reflective track some love on her Instagram page, much to Miley’s delight.

Keaton’s post features several black-and-white photos of herself as a younger woman, set to Cyrus’ new track. “I know I used to be crazy/ I know I used to be fun/ You say I used to be wild/ I say I used to be young,” the 30-year-old sings on the chorus.

“HERE’S TO MILEY,” Keaton captioned her post with a red-heart emoji, tagging Cyrus.

The Hannah Montana star hit the comments section of Keaton’s post with gratitude, responding, “I appreciate you deeply. This is so moving and exactly why I made this song. I said throughout the journey of writing it over the last 18 months, ‘all I want is Diane Keaton to dance to it’ and this is even more magical. I love you. Thank you.”

This isn’t the first time Keaton has showed Cyrus’ music love. Following the release of “Flowers” in January, the Academy Award-winning actress posted a video of herself dancing to the song on social media. “@mileycyrus YOUR INCREDIBLE SONG GAVE ME A REASON TO DANCE IN MY OWN BACKYARD!” she captioned the post. Cyrus’ “Flowers” struck a chord with a lot of listeners, as it ended up spending eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

That Chick Angel Talks ‘One Margarita’ Music Video, Getting Flo Milli, Sexyy Red & FendiDa Rappa on Remix

That Chick Angel has gone viral with her track “One Margarita” — and naturally, she’s having a drink to celebrate. The rapper sat down with Billboard News‘ Tetris Kelly to knock back a few drinks, as well as talk about how her track, which also features Steve Terrell and CasaDi, came to be

The rapper and Kelly played a game in which he asked her a series of questions to see things she has or has not done. “Have a margarita if Cindy Crawford was in your music video,” Kelly said, which prompted Angel to take a sip of her drink and explain how the song and the Crawford cameo came to be.

“The first step was, we got a feature. Me and Steve and CasaDi discussed who we really wanted on the song, and of course Saucy Santana was on top of the list because he’s funny. He is like a margarita. He is a walking margarita,” she explained. “They were like, ‘We should have a product placement. How about Casamigos?’ What I didn’t realize is that one of the owners of Casamigos is the husband of Cindy Crawford. You can’t tell me this ain’t the song of the summer. When Cindy Crawford shows up, it’s the song of the summer.”

After the track started gaining traction, Angel enlisted Flo Milli, Sexyy Red, FendiDa Rappa for the Ladies Remix of the track, released on Aug. 10.

“Flo Milli I was already a huge fan of, so she was one of the first to jump onto the track. No, Sexyy Red, her star is going so fast, so I wouldn’t have thought she had time for anybody’s ‘One Margarita’ but she got that verse in so quick,” Angel recalled. “FendiDa Rappa, we’re actually labelmates and I’m learning more about her as an artist and she just…she slid on the track so good.”

Following the success of the track, That Chick Angel (real name Angel Tanksley) was signed to Azoff Company label Giant Music.

What Inflation? Music Execs Remain Bullish on Consumer Demand for Concerts, Subscriptions

How long will consumers keep spending $200 on concert tickets, $15 on a cocktail at the venue (and God knows what for parking) and $11 on a music subscription? Judging from recent comments by some executives, people may be dealing with inflation, but they will still pay to be entertained.

“After another quarter of record-breaking [gross order value], it is clear consumers continue to prioritize live events experiences,” said Vivid Seats CEO Stan Chia on the company’s Aug. 8 earnings call.

Investors, though, seem worried about the potential effects of millions of American student loan borrowers resuming payments this fall after years of pandemic-era forbearance. In over three years, the forbearance on student loan debt totaled about $185 billion that was spent elsewhere or saved, according to an estimate by Goldman Sachs. Asked by an analyst about the possibility that loan payments will put a crimp in concert spending, Live Nation president/CFO Joe Berchtold said the company doesn’t expect a problem. Live Nation’s analysis is that the positive impact of fans returning to live events after the pandemic “is about 10 times the impact of any potential headwind coming from the student loan payments needing to get made,” Berchtold said during the company’s July 27 earnings call.

Chia echoed Bechtold’s optimism. Vivid Seats sees “resiliency” in consumer demand and strong trends for live music, he said. To that point, Vivid Seats increased its guidance for 2023 for the second time this year and now expects marketplace gross order value (GOV) of $3.4 billion to $3.6 billion and revenues from $630 million to $650 million.

What’s more, Live Nation expects people won’t be shy about opening their wallets. Full-year concerts margin will increase in 2023 thanks to an “increase [in] the per-fan profitability” from on-site spending — things such as food and drink — and “containing to focus on the costs,” said Berchtold. Price-conscious consumers “are continuing to spend strongly,” he said, and Live Nation is seeing an increase in both the number of fans per show and per-head spending.

Eventbrite, which increased the mid-point of its 2023 revenue guidance from $323.5 million to $325 million, is finding people are still eager to do things in the real world after COVID-19 lockdowns moved much of their lives online. In an Aug. 3 earnings call, CEO Julia Hartz said the company’s improved outlook comes from “strong demand signals across the board, particularly for categories like music, film and media, food and drink, nightlife, performing and visual arts.” What’s more, Eventbrite is seeing “people really want to get out and connect with one another,” she added: “Singles and dating events are 50% up year over year. Independent singer-songwriter-hosted events were up 60%.”

German promoter CTS Eventim expects moderate growth in internet ticket volume and live entertainment revenue this year. And while CTS believes its future is clouded by unquantifiable effects of geopolitical security uncertainty, persistently high inflation and a potential economic stagnation or recession, the company said in its mid-year earnings report that “earnings figures should improve substantially compared with 2022.”

Consumer spending on music subscriptions also appears to be strong going into 2024. Spotify, which raised the price of its individual plan by $1 per month in the United States in July, expects to have 224 million subscribers by the end of September, after adding 15 million in the first half of the year. Its third quarter revenue guidance of 3.3 billion euros ($3.56 billion) would mark a nearly 9% gain from the prior-year period, although analysts surveyed by StreetAccount expected guidance of 3.4 billion euros ($3.67 billion). And its gross margin guidance of 26% would be a marked improvement from 25.2% and 24.1% in the first and second quarters, respectively.

While consumer spending continues unabated, brands’ spending on advertising — an important revenue stream for labels and publishers — is a different story. A soft advertising market has hurt everything from radio revenues to online advertising (though Live Nation’s advertising and sponsorship revenue has rebounded nicely from the pandemic and has seen no slowdown, according to Berchtold). iHeartMedia expects third-quarter revenue, excluding the impact of political advertising, to decline in the low-single digits, as July revenue was down about 5% year over year.

But radio advertising could rebound in the second half of the year, according to B Riley Securities analyst Daniel Day, and Cumulus Media’s better-than-expected second quarter earnings results were a positive sign. While iHeartMedia investors weren’t enthusiastic about the company’s second quarter earnings — its share price fell 17% the day earnings were announced and dropped another 6% through Thursday — the company remains optimistic. “While there was some softness in our larger advertisers, in Q2 our smaller advertisers remained resilient,” said iHeartMedia CEO Bob Pittman during the Aug. 8 earnings call. “And we saw a gradual improvement from our larger advertisers as well, which leads us to believe that we’ll continue to see improvements in the business through the remainder of the year.”

Avatar Scores First Billboard Chart No. 1 With ‘The Dirt I’m Buried In’

Avatar reaches No. 1 on a Billboard chart for the first time with “The Dirt I’m Buried In,” which tops the Mainstream Rock Airplay ranking dated Sept. 2.

The song rises from the runner-up spot in its 31st week on the survey, completing the longest journey to No. 1 in over 20 years. It ties for the second-longest trip to the top in the chart’s 42-year history, alongside Young Guns’ “Bones.” Trapt’s “Headstrong” boasts the steadiest such ascent.

Longest Rise to No. 1, Mainstream Rock Airplay:

  • 40 weeks, “Headstrong, “Trapt” (reached No. 1 on chart dated July 26, 2003)
  • 31, “The Dirt I’m Buried In,” Avatar (Sept. 2, 2023)
  • 31, “Bones,” Young Guns (March 23, 2013)
  • 28, “Paralyzer,” Finger Eleven (Aug. 11, 2007)
  • 27, “Just Pretend,” Bad Omens (March 11, 2023)
  • 26, “Masterpiece,” Motionless in White (Oct. 22, 2022)
  • 25, “S.O.S. (Sawed Off Shotgun),” The Glorious Sons (Jan. 19, 2019)
  • 25, “Tired,” Stone Sour (Jan. 25, 2014)

“The Dirt I’m Buried In” marks, by far, the Swedish band’s best rank on Mainstream Rock Airplay. The group logged a previous best by reaching No. 16 twice, with “The Eagle Has Landed” in July 2016 and “Colossus” in December 2020.

Avatar first appeared on Mainstream Rock Airplay with “Smells Like a Freak Show,” which hit No. 32 in April 2013.

Concurrently, “The Dirt I’m Buried In” climbs 12-10 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 2.9 million audience impressions, up 17%, Aug. 18-24, according to Luminate. It’s Avatar’s first top 10 on the list; its only other entry, “The Eagle Has Landed,” peaked at No. 48.

“The Dirt I’m Buried In” is the lead single from Dance Devil Dance, Avatar’s ninth studio set. It debuted at No. 18 on the Top Hard Rock Albums tally in March and has earned 19,000 equivalent album units to date.

Miley Cyrus Looks Back at Sinead O’Connor Feud: ‘I’d Just Been Judged for So Long’

Miley Cyrus is reflecting on pivotal moments, the highs and the lows of her career following the release of her introspective new single, “Used to Be Young.”

During her Thursday night (Aug. 24) ABC concert special Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions), the 30-year-old superstar looked back on a 2013 incident between herself and the late Sinead O’Connor, who criticized Cyrus in an open letter for being nude in her “Wrecking Ball” music video. The “Nothing Compares 2 U” star speculated that Cyrus doesn’t “care” for herself, and made her creative choice to look “cool” for the industry and for men. “You are worth more than your body or your sexual appeal,” O’Connor wrote.

At the time, Cyrus shared a screenshot of O’Connor tweets written in a fragile mental state, comparing her to Amanda Bynes, who was struggling with her own mental health as well. O’Connor replied, “You have posted today tweets of mine which are two years old, which were posted by me when I was unwell and seeking help so as to make them look like they are recent… In doing so you mock myself and Amanda Bynes for having suffered with mental health issues and for having sought help. I mean really really… who advises you?”

“I was expecting there to be controversy and backlash, but I don’t think I expected other women to put me down or turn on me, especially women that had been in my position before,” Cyrus said during the ABC special. “This is when I’d received an open letter from Sinead O’Connor, and I had no idea about the fragile mental state that she was in, and I was also only 20 years old, so I could really only wrap my head around mental illness so much. All that I saw was that another woman had told me that this idea was not my idea.”

She continued, “Our younger childhood triggers and traumas come up in weird and odd ways, and I think I’d just been judged for so long for my own choices that I was just exhausted, and I was in this place where I finally was making my own choices and my own decisions, and to have that taken away from me deeply upset me. God bless Sinead O’Connor, for real, in all seriousness.”

O’Connor died in July at age 56. In her special, Cyrus performed her Endless Summer Vacation track “Wonder Woman,” with a title card dedicating the song to O’Connor.

Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, BLACKPINK & More: What’s Your Favorite New Music Release of the Week? Vote!

It might be the last new music Friday of August, but the summer hits keep on coming, thanks to new releases from Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, BLACKPINK and more.

The past decade of Cyrus’ life has been filled with highs, lows and criticisms — all for public consumption. Such is the subject of her latest ballad, “Used to Be Young,” notably released on the 10th anniversary of her “Blurred Lines” performance at the 2013 VMAs. The vulnerable track sees the Disney Channel alum reflecting on her headline-worthy past, while allowing herself much needed forgiveness to move on to the next phase of her life.

Gomez, meanwhile, gave fans a chill track for the end of the summer that acts as equal parts kiss-off for the season and to any seasonal romantic interests. The Rare Beauty founder shows off her fun and flirty side on “Single Soon,” as she muses on the many ways to break up with her lover — notes, phone calls and ghosting are all options — so she can be carefree, untethered and most importantly, unbothered.

BLACKPINK also returned with a new track with the released of “The Girls.” The energetic song — which marks the group’s first offering since the 2022 release of their Billboard 200 crowning album, Born Pink — features high-octane synths, booming bass and members Lisa, Jisoo, Rosé and Jennie flexing about their social status, musical prowess and more.

Zach Bryan, Burna Boy and more also returned with new tunes this week.

Oliver Anthony Music’s ‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ Debuts on Country Airplay Chart

Anthony Oliver Music’s viral hit “Rich Men North of Richmond” arrives on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Sept. 2) at No. 45. In the tracking week ending Aug. 24, the song, released Aug. 11 (after the singer-songwriter had previewed it on TikTok), drew 2 million audience impressions, up 294%, according to Luminate.

The single, which the Farmville, Va.-based artist (born Christopher Anthony Lunsford) solely wrote, marks his first chart entry. On the Aug. 26-dated charts, “Richmond” launched at No. 1 on the all-genre, multimetric Billboard Hot 100, as well as Hot Country Songs. He became the first artist with no prior chart history in any form to soar in at the summit of each survey.

The former factory worker’s song, a lightning rod for media coverage from both left- and right-leaning media outlets and pundits (and which sparked the opening talking point in the first Republican presidential primary debate on Wednesday, Aug. 23), drew 17.5 million streams and sold 147,000 downloads in the U.S. in the tracking week ending Aug. 17.

In the past week, many media outlets have been wondering if country radio would get behind the breakout hit. Although the song is not being promoted to radio, at least yet, one programmer giving avid support is Bo Matthews, program director at Alpha Media’s KBAY, San Jose, Calif. It “simply sounds great on the radio,” he tells Billboard. With 32 plays, “Richmond” was the Country Airplay-reporting station’s 16th most played song Aug. 18-24.

“We haven’t gotten any negative feedback for playing it, and I think we are merely meeting the expectations of our listeners,” Matthews muses. “In fact, I have been impressed and proud of the positive feedback we’ve received from people in the industry and the record community expressing their thanks that we’re supporting it. Finally, it’s obvious that radio listeners are becoming the real gatekeepers for the music we decide to play.”
